00:30Hello and welcome to Countdown. It is Tuesday the 14th of March. You join us on Pancake Day. So if you're sent home stuffing your face, more power to your elbow. Thank you so much for tuning in. And let's introduce the team. Centre of the action as always is our Dr Tom Crawford. And chipping in from the sidelines, never a bead of sweat. It's our doyenne of the dictionary, Susie Dent. And alongside her all week is the brilliant Jenny Pyle.
01:01So here on Countdown, we encourage you all to apply, to come onto the programme. And we've been so buoyed by the amount of entries we've been getting. But right at the top of today's show, we're going to put that plea out again.
01:13And it starts with a very simple email. Countdown at Channel4.com. That's Countdown at Channel4.com. Using the number four, you send the email and we take care of it from there. And that's exactly what our champion, Tim James, did. Great to have you back.
01:31And also, thankfully, our challenger sent that email as well. Today, we welcome to the Countdown family, Lydia Hardy from South East London. How are you?
01:40I'm well, thank you, Colin. Good. Listen, you've climbed a wonderful part of the world, actually. Tell me about that.
01:46In 2009, I climbed Mount Sinai in Egypt. It was a charity event, so it was to raise money.
01:54It just takes your breath away, doesn't it? Yeah, it was lovely. We went to the pyramids just before, something nice before we went and did all the hard work.
02:02So, yeah, it was lovely. Beautiful, beautiful. Excellent. Thank you very much. Lydia and James, the only journey you need to think about is the road that leads to that Countdown conundrum. Good luck to both of you.
02:15Let's play then, Tim. It's your letters.

07:12This is big in Japan.
07:13Let's ask Sushi Dent about it.
07:16Welcome back.
07:32I have no idea what this is, no matter what way I cut it or wrap it up.
07:36But I'm guessing it's Sushi.
07:37This is big in Japan.
07:38Let's ask Sushi Dent about it.
07:40And let's do it.

07:43Something?
07:43Uma-boshi, apparently.

07:45Yes.
07:46It is a pickled uma fruit.
07:49And I've looked this up.
07:50Apparently, it's got a really distinctive taste.
07:51A little bit like a sour apricot.
07:54Used in Japanese cuisine.
07:55Are you a big sushi fan?
07:56I like sushi, yeah.
07:58What about you, Jen?
07:59Like a player?
08:00I'm a bit like you because I know you're the same.
08:02I just like the hot stuff that you can get at the sushi.
08:04So you don't really have the sushi.
08:05You just have the alternative that might be there.
08:06Yeah, I really want to like sushi.
08:08I wanted to, but it's just not happening.
08:12Agreed.
08:12Absolutely.

12:475 away, Tim.
12:48I think I've got 3-5-3.
12:50Yeah, 3-5-3 for a big 10 points for a champion.
12:53Let's have it.
12:5475 minus 5.
12:5775 minus 5 to give you 70.
13:006 minus 1.
13:016 minus 1 gives you another 5.
13:04Multiply them together.
13:05That will give you 350.
13:07And then add on a 3.
13:09And then add on the 3.
13:10Lovely.
13:11Out of Tim.
13:13Let's talk to Jenny Powell.
13:15Yesterday went all the way back to your teenage years and starting now.
13:19What was that kind of...
13:20..that moment, you know, where your family started ringing and saying,
13:23oh, my goodness, I can't believe you're presenting that?
13:26I think it was probably Top of the Pops.
13:28Oh, yeah.
13:29I mean, such an iconic show for all of us, all generations.
13:32And I was a teenager when I presented it.
13:35I could not quite believe it.
13:37So I was watching it.
13:38I was listening, you know, all the time,
13:39watching all the time in my youth, in my early teens.
13:43And then all of a sudden, I was there about 19 years old
13:46and presented my first Top of the Pops.
13:49I remember a family member ringing me when I presented Top of the Pops
13:51and going, well, I mean, that's it now.
13:53It's over.
13:54You've done.
13:54Well, you're buying a mansion.
13:56I said...
13:56Where'd you go from here?
13:57..with 250 quid.
13:58I know, I know.
14:00What got me was it was such an amazing thing to be on
14:03and you just wanted to blur away.
14:04And, of course, you had about 10 seconds to say,
14:06that was that and this is this.
14:08Yeah.
14:08Who was on when you were on?
14:10I had the Happy Mondays on, but I didn't even pronounce them right.
14:12I just...
14:12And I only got one crack at it and I just went,
14:15Happy Monday.
14:15So that went down well.
14:18That's great.
14:19So, I mean, the fashion, I don't know about your fashion faux pas,
14:23but mine certainly started back on Top of the Pops.
14:25I remember you didn't, you know, you didn't have stylists
14:27and all the rest of it.
14:28You just go out and get yourself an outfit.
14:29And I remember going to this one store,
14:31very popular high street store, no longer with us anymore,
14:34but...
14:34And I bought a faux leather gold jacket,
14:38like a jacket, and white cycling shorts.
14:40I mean, who does that?
14:41That's amazing.
14:42And that was cool.
14:43I thought I'd be Googling.
14:45Oh, I love it.
14:48Thank you so much.
14:52And we get back to our game now, back to business.
14:56Our champion's on a roll,
14:57but he knows he's got a dangerous challenger today
15:00in Lydia Hardy.
15:01And Tim, it's your letters.
15:03Continent, please, Tom.
15:04All right.

15:28D.
15:30And another one.
15:32W.
15:35Can we finish with a vowel, please?
15:38And an O.
15:40And here we go again.
15:42And here we go again.
15:42And here we go again.
15:58Bye.
15:59Tim James.
16:13I've got six.
16:14And Lydia Hardy.
16:16I'm going to try six.
16:17Tim.
16:18Looted.
16:19What have you got?
16:20Ovated.
16:21Ovated.
16:21Are we standing up for that?
16:23Afraid not.
16:24Not there is a verb.
16:24Ovate, egg-shaped.
16:26It also means a Welsh bard.
16:29But not there is a verb, I'm afraid.
16:30Goodness me.
16:31All right.
16:31So Looted steals the points for Tim.
16:34JP, what are we adding?
16:36For a six, avowed.
16:38How about that?
16:38Yes.
16:39There you go.
16:40Adventurous rhyme.
16:40Good fun.
16:41Let's go again.
16:42Lydia.
16:42Can I have a consonant, please?
16:45We'll start with a C.
16:47And another one.
16:49S.
16:50And a vowel.
16:53E.
16:54And another one.
16:56A.
16:57And a consonant.
17:00G.
17:02And a vowel.
17:05I.
17:06And a consonant.
17:09Off.
17:11And a consonant.
17:14S.
17:16And a vowel, please.
17:19And finally, a U.
17:21Can I die?
17:21And a consonant.
17:37And a consonant.
17:38All right. Lydia? Seven. And Tim? Seven as well. Lydia, what's the word?
17:59Gassier. Oh, gassier. And for you, Tim? Saucier. Saucier and gassier. I know which one I'd
18:05rather be. What can we throw in there? Just another seven from us. Yes, the cruises.
18:12Yeah, doesn't make your top gone, no. Sevens all round. As we get our third, numbers in
18:16Tim. Could I have one large and five small, please, Tom? Sure can, Tim. Two, and let's go
18:22three from the bottom this time. All right. Four, two, one, two, ten, 100. And your target
18:33is 249. Nice and low. 249. Numbers up.
18:442, 4, 9, Tim.
19:11Yeah, 2, 4, 9.
19:12And you, Lydia?
19:132, 4, 9.
19:14Brilliant.
19:15Both written down, yes?
19:17Yeah, half a bit.
19:20You need to go first, then, Lydia.
19:21Off you go.
19:22OK, 2 times 100 is 200.
19:262 times 100 gives you the 200.
19:28And then 10 plus 2 is 12.
19:3110 plus 2 is 12.
19:33Times 4 is 48.
19:35Times 4 gives you 48.
19:38Add those together and then add the 1.
19:40Yeah, and then plus the 1, 48.
19:43249.
19:43Fantastic.
19:4410.
19:44I did it a different way.
19:4610 divided by 2.
19:4810 divided by 2 will give you 5.
19:50Multiply by 100.
19:53Times the 100 for 500.
19:55Then divided by 2 for 250.
19:57Divided by 2 is 250.
19:59And then take away 1.
20:00And take away that 1.
20:02Magic.
20:05Really strong indeed as we get our second Tea Time teaser, which is Sir Gamer.
20:10Sir Gamer.
20:11The military, a Glaswegian football team, and the entitled.
20:15The military, a Glaswegian football team, and the entitled.
20:18The military, a Glaswegian football team, and the entitled.
20:38I got it from the military army and the Glaswegian football team, Rangers, jurors.
20:44Armagers then must have something to do with the entitled.
20:46Yes, someone entitled to have a coat of arms, essentially, to have heraldic arms.
20:50Excellent.
20:50Well, no one's entitled to a teapot on Countdown.
20:53You have to win that.
20:55And Lydia, there's still very much hope here against a brilliant champion.
20:59Just 22 points in it.
21:00Six rounds to go.
21:01And Lydia, you're choosing these letters.
21:04OK.
21:04Can I have a consonant, please?
21:06Absolutely.
21:07Start with a C.
21:09And a vowel.
21:12O.
21:14And another vowel.

22:26And Tim, moose.
22:28So you're spending it with a double S, as in a raspberry mix.
22:31Oh, you, the blessy.
22:32Chocolate mousse.
22:33I was very confused.
22:34A different type of mousse altogether.
22:36Yeah.
22:37I wasn't eating mine.
22:38That's brilliant.
22:39That's a really good spot.
22:40Is six as good as it gets, Jenny Powell?
22:43Well, I did have a cosmic six.
22:45Yeah?
22:45Yeah, cosmic.
22:46I quite like that.
22:47That's positive, isn't it?
22:48It is.
22:49And, but you could do better than that and get a seven.
22:53Yes.
22:53Yes, with miscues.
22:55Oh, very good.
22:56How can I not spot that?
22:57Turn years of brisette and snooker.
22:59After all you've been doing, all this time in presenting.
23:02Miss cues, honestly.
23:04You said I'm missing my cues?
23:06Unbelievable, Jenny.
23:08Right, more letters.

24:23And Lydia?
24:24Five.
24:25A five.
24:26What's the five?
24:26Mould.
24:27Same here.
24:28I'm mouldy sitting there too.
24:30That's all I got, Tim.
24:31Radium?
24:32Very nice.
24:33Excellent stuff.
24:34Good spot.
24:34Yes, there you go.
24:36Surely nothing better in there.
24:38Well, there is a seven, actually.
24:40Yeah.
24:41Just snuck in there with modular.
24:42I could have paused my TV.
24:44Some people do, by the way.
24:45It's just very naughty of you to do that.
24:47I could have paused the TV.
24:48I wouldn't have got modular.
24:48Well done indeed.
24:50And Tim increases his lead with four rounds left.
24:53Well, it was ins and outs yesterday for Origins Awards.
24:56What about today, Susie?
24:58Yes.
24:58And if you remember, that came from Peter Thompson in Merseyside.
25:01Now, Peter actually sent me two questions,
25:03but I decided to split them up to give them full attention.
25:07And his second question was about eye wash.
25:11And he says, in practice, eye wash is quite a valuable thing
25:14for curing sore and gritty eyes.
25:16It's certainly not rubbish.
25:18And I wonder how this term came to mean that.
25:21Pretty much, it's opposite meaning.
25:22So if you say, that's just eye wash, it means it's total nonsense, really.
25:27And it's true.
25:28I suppose it depends how you look at it, forgive the pun.
25:31Because the very first meaning of eye wash was indeed lotion for washing the eyes out.
25:37And that dates back to the 18th century.
25:39So longstanding remedy.
25:41And a century later, it came to mean something that, yes, washed your eyes out,
25:46but it was kind of intended to make you see something as being more attractive than it was.
25:51So it's almost as though it was actively designed to deceive,
25:55as if your eyes have glazed over a little bit and you see everything in soft focus.
26:01So in that sense, you avoid seeing the harsh light of reality.
26:05And it didn't take long before that was transferred over then to empty talk or humbug,
26:10something that was designed to take your eye off the main event so that you were distracted
26:16and perhaps didn't see the full implication of something.
26:19So that is how it gradually changed.
26:21And this is very similar to hogwash, which perhaps we're more familiar with.
26:24If something is hogwash, it's complete and utter bunkum.
26:28And that originally was wash for pigs, but wash in the sense of pigs as well.
26:33And as we know, pigs have never had an easy ride.
26:35Despite being wonderful and quite clean animals, they've not had a very good time of it in English.
26:41We talk about pig-ritude, or at least some of us do, which is utter filth,
26:45where you say your rumours of pigs die.
26:47All of this is slightly unfair.
26:49But the hogwash and the swill that the pigs will eat,
26:52there's quite a big theme in English,
26:55going back to all kind of concoctions of food used for nonsense.
26:59So bouldered ash was a really unappetising mixture of milk and beer
27:03and occasionally sort of really horrible ingredients.
27:07Flummery, an old word for nonsense, which I love.
27:09That was a kind of blancmange.
27:11So that link between food and rubbish has been there for a while.
27:14But yes, eyewash, something designed to deceive.
27:17And it's a rare day where I have to say to you, never heard of it, never used it.
27:21No, no, hogwash, yes.
27:23But eyewash has never actually crossed my desk.
27:27I think some, I hope some of our older viewers will remember sort of my eye,
27:31as if, yeah, as if, you know, I'm not going to believe that.
27:33Or my eye in Betty Martin, which I'm asked about a lot.
27:37So they'll probably be a bit more familiar with it.
27:38Yeah, not extinct, but certainly a dormant word, isn't it?
27:41Yeah, as it stands.
27:42Thank you, Suze.
27:43APPLAUSE
27:44Great, Lydia, here we go.
27:47Can I have a consonant, please?

29:09Groped.
29:09And for Tim?
29:10Pondering.
29:11Pondering.
29:14We will ponder no longer in terms of who's going to win today's programme.
29:18You're out of sight now because that's a massive 18 points.
29:21You found another gear today, Tim.
29:23Brilliant.
29:24Jenny Powell, did you get pondering?
29:26Oh, I pondered a while and ponder we did.
29:28And we pondered well.
29:30And that's it.
29:30For pondering.
29:31Lovely.
29:32All done.
29:32All done.
29:33You can't re-pond.
29:34That's that you kind of question.
29:36How dare you.
29:38Final letters round of the day.
29:40Tim, you're already in 87.
29:41This could be a huge marker you're throwing down here for the series.
29:45Off you go.
29:46Consonant, please, Tom.
29:48We'll start with an S.
29:50And another one.
29:53T.

30:23And last letter.
30:24And last letters.
30:32Yeah.
30:33MUSIC PLAYS
30:55Time's up. Tim?
30:57Seven. Lydia?
30:58Seven. Seven as well.
31:00What are you going for, Tim?
31:02Er, saunter.
31:03Saunter for you. And for Lydia?
31:05Er, the same, saunter.
31:07And saunter. OK, well done.
31:09We love that word. We always love that word.
31:11We do.
31:12Can we do better, though?
31:14No, we're looking at jaunters.
31:16I'm going on a jaunt. That's not in.
31:18So we were back with sevens.
31:19Yes, eastern.
31:21Yeah.
31:21And natures.
31:24I'd have risked jaunters.
31:25It sounds like it should be in there and we could have sauntered on a jaunter,
31:28which would have been lovely.
31:30Is it there without the S?
31:31No, just jauntier would be OK, but not a jaunter.
31:35Fantastic. Lovely.
31:36Right, 94-42.
31:38Still 20 points to go.
31:40And it's your number's final one of the afternoon.
31:43Lydia?
31:44Erm, shall we have three large?
31:47Yes.
31:47If you want, Lydia, you're choosing.
31:49Let's have fun.
31:50Yeah, why not?
31:53Three, three, ten, 75, 25, 50.
32:00And your target is 251.
32:03251, number's up.
32:05Alan, two, three, ten, 75, 50, 50, 50, 50, 50, 30, 50.
32:222.51 with three large and three small, Lydia Hardy.
32:382.51. Excellent. And for you, Tim?
32:40Yeah, 2.51. Yeah. Lydia, off you go.
32:43OK, 50 divided by 10 is 5.
32:4750 over 10 will give you 5.
32:49And then 75 take 25 is 50.
32:5375 take 25 gives you 50.
32:56Times them together for 250.
32:58Times them together will give you 250.
33:01And then 3 over 3 is 1.
33:03And then the 3 over 3, yeah, gives you the 1 to add on.
33:06That is brilliant, because it doesn't matter how you get there,
33:09as long as you get there.
33:10Tim, mate, I've went route 1 here.
33:12Yeah, 25 times 10 for 250.
33:15Yeah, same as me.
33:163 over 3 for the 1.
33:17250, yeah, and then the 3 over 3 again gives you the 1.
33:21Well done.
33:22APPLAUSE
33:23I'd give you extra points, Lydia, if I could,
33:26for how you managed to get the 2.51, but it can't.
33:28But you can grab a final 10 here if you compete, Tim,
33:31in our Countdown Conundrum.
33:33There he is for 114, a clipboard.
33:40Let's have a look.
33:42Brilliant.
33:43APPLAUSE
33:43Fantastic.
33:47Lydia, listen, half a century against a really strong champion.
33:52You look a little disappointed, but I'm telling you, Max and Maya, your daughter,
33:57and the three cats will be so proud of you today.
33:59Well done.
34:00Thanks, Colin.
34:01And, Tim, there you go.
34:03You know, this is getting to that beyond wildest dreams territory now, isn't it?
34:07Yeah, I can't believe I've done five now.
34:10I'll tell you, 114, not quite the highest score of the series so far.
34:15That's 116, but you've got three more bites of that apple to come.
34:19So we'll see you tomorrow.
34:20See you tomorrow.
34:21Excellent stuff.
