00:30Well, good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:35Today we're going to talk about strange food combinations.
00:38Rachel, apparently the social media is flooded with people's bizarre concoctions.
00:43How about strawberries on pizza?
00:45How about tomato ketchup and mayonnaise on vanilla ice cream?
00:50Oh, no way.
00:51But I'll tell you the classic.
00:52Well, it's not a classic.
00:53I want it to become a classic.
00:55I want everybody to try it because it's brilliant.
00:57I will not go to the cinema.
01:00I will not enter the stalls.
01:03Right.
01:03Unless I've got vanilla ice cream and cashew nuts.
01:08And what you do is you take the top off the vanilla and you spread a layer of cashew nut.
01:14Salted.
01:15It's bliss.
01:16I love it.
01:18Yeah.
01:18I love it.
01:19Honestly, it should become the nation's favourite.
01:22It's fantastic.
01:22No.
01:23And I'm very prissy about food.
01:24Yeah.
01:25What about you?
01:26We've had this argument before.
01:27You have to keep your nuts separate for me.
01:30Always like your nuts somewhere else.
01:32No.
01:33What's your favourite?
01:35The weird food combination through Pasha and the Russians.
01:38They put mayonnaise on everything.
01:40And mayonnaise in soup is really, really good.
01:43And I guess you have...
01:44The bouillabaisse has kind of roux, doesn't it?
01:46Yeah.
01:46Which is a similar kind of thing.
01:47Yeah.
01:47But, you know, vegetable stew, vegetable soup, anything.
01:51You just shove a load of mayonnaise in.
01:52It's delicious.
01:53I love it.
01:54Who's with us, Rachel?
01:55Glenn Jones is back from Loughton.
01:58Runs his own companies.
01:59Two wins now.
02:01How are you feeling?
02:02Great, yeah.
02:03No, no.
02:03Delighted with that.
02:05Excellent.
02:05Well, it wasn't as dangerous, was it, as cliff jumping, which is what you used to do, and bungee jumping.
02:11Maybe not as dangerous, but maybe a little bit more terrifying countdown, I'd say.
02:15Do you reckon?
02:15Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:16Well, you did very well.
02:18Cruised through.
02:19But now you're up against John Cole.
02:21A retired yachting instructor from Gosport.
02:24What a lovely job to have.
02:25And you sailed the Pacific.
02:26You sailed the Atlantic.
02:28You taught people how to keep safe at sea, I guess.
02:31Yes, indeed.
02:32Yeah.
02:32Pure escapism.
02:34We plan for the worst and hope for the best.
02:37Have a safe passage.
02:38Through, uh, through countdown.
02:40Big round of applause for John and Glenn.
02:45And over in the corner, Susie, joined once again by, well, a very familiar face.
02:51Journalist, jazz musician, food critic, Jay Rayner.
02:54And Jay.
02:55Yes.
02:56Give us an extraordinary combination.
02:58Well, the, the most extraordinary of recent times, I think, was Heston Blumenthal's white chocolate and caviar buttons.
03:05Yeah.
03:06Now, that just works on exactly the same principle as your vanilla ice cream and salted cashew nuts, which is sweet and salty really do go together.
03:14But then when you, I know, you're, you're, you're, you're a trailblazer.
03:16But when you start to think about something so obviously confectionery like white chocolate and putting it with fish, people, not unreasonably, get a bit leery.
03:25But really, they've got two flavour molecules which are very similar.
03:28And you put them together and it actually was delicious.
03:31It worked.
03:31It did.
03:32All right.
03:33Let's get down to business.
03:34Glenn, off we go.
03:37All right, Rachel.
03:37Hi, Glenn.
03:38Can I get a consonant, please?
03:40Start today with D.
03:42And a second.
03:44M.
03:45Third, please.
03:47W.
03:48Vowel.
03:50E.
03:51Second.
03:52O.
03:54Third.
03:56O.
03:56Consonant.
03:59V.
04:01Second.
04:03R.
04:05And feature of vowel, please.
04:07And lastly, U.
04:09And the clock starts now.
04:10C douche.
04:17C douche.
04:18C douche.
04:22C douche.
04:29C douche.
04:29Well, Glenn, six.
04:43A six.
04:44And John?
04:45Six for me as well, Nick.
04:48And Glenn?
04:49Wooda.
04:50John?
04:51Moored.
04:52Uh, moored.
04:53Absolutely fine.
04:54There's no wooda, I'm afraid.
04:56Er, Glenn, there's woodier, but no wooda.
04:58Sorry.
04:58In the corner, er, we've got a seven, if you're getting off to a fast start, vroomed.
05:06You can have vroomed, can you?
05:07You can have vroomed, indeed.
05:09Brilliant.
05:09Vroom, vroom.
05:10Anything else, Susie?
05:11No, that's our best.
05:12Let's get to a seven.
05:13Yeah, not bad.
05:14Six points for John, and John's back again.
05:18Good afternoon, Rachel.
05:19Afternoon, John.
05:20May I have a consonant?
05:21You may, thank you.
05:22Start with N.
05:25Consonant?
05:26S.
05:27Vowel.
05:29O.
05:31Another vowel.
05:32E.
05:34Consonant?
05:35T.
05:37Consonant?
05:39D.
05:40Vowel.
05:43U.
05:45Vowel.
05:47E.
05:48And a final consonant, please.
05:51And a final T.
05:54Stand by.
05:55We'll see you next time.
06:06Well, John, we've got a seven.
06:29A seven, and Glenn?
06:30Just a five.
06:32Your five?
06:33Sonnet.
06:34Mm-hmm.
06:35John?
06:36Stunted?
06:38Stunted, very good.
06:40How are you spelling sonnet?
06:41S-O-N-E-T?
06:43It's double N, I'm afraid.
06:44OK.
06:44Sorry.
06:46And in the corner, Jay and Susie, we've got duettos for seven.
06:52Yes.
06:53Which is a floor of duets.
06:55Yeah.
06:56Which is two people performing beautifully together,
06:59each one of whom is a duettist, shouldn't be?
07:01Very good, yes.
07:02It's just an old form of duets, really, duetto.
07:04OK.
07:04And, Susie, anything else?
07:06Again, that was our top score.
07:08OK.
07:09And now, Glenn, it's a numbers game.
07:11Off we go.
07:11Four large and two small, please.
07:13Thought you might say that.
07:14Thank you, Glenn.
07:14Your usual four large ones, two little ones.
07:17And the first one of the day is five and one.
07:20And then the big four, 50, 100, 25, 75.
07:26And the target, 438.
07:28Four, three, eight.
07:29One, two, three, four, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five, five
08:00Well, Glenn?
08:014-3-8.
08:024-3-8.
08:04And John?
08:05Nothing, I'm afraid.
08:06Up to you, Glenn.
08:08So I did 50 divided by 25.
08:1050 over 25, 2.
08:12And then 75 minus 2.
08:1575 minus 2, 73.
08:17Then 5 plus 1, 6.
08:19Yep.
08:19Then multiply them together.
08:20Good tactics.
08:21Well done.
08:22Well done.
08:224-3-8.
08:26Well done, Glenn.
08:27Only three points behind now.
08:29Off the blocks there as we turn to our first tea time teaser, which is I get shiny.
08:35And the clue, I get shiny white teeth after visiting her at the dentist.
08:40I get shiny white teeth after visiting her at the dentist.
08:44Welcome back.
09:01I left with the clue, I get shiny white teeth after visiting her at the dentist.

12:16That's eight.
12:18A seaplane.
12:18Very good.
12:20That's my finest year.
12:24There's something very alluring about a seaplane, isn't there?
12:27Have you been on one?
12:28Never.
12:28No, neither have I.
12:29I'd love to.
12:30In the old days, of course, I used to fly right down to South America on the big Sunderland
12:34flying boats.
12:35Fantastic thing to have done.
12:37It's the idea of landing on water that doesn't really appeal, if I'm honest.
12:41I guess.
12:42I guess.
12:42Taking off is always a bit of a surprise, too, I imagine.
12:4526 plays, 23.
12:47John's still in the lead.
12:48John, your numbers game.

13:42Thank you, Glenn
13:45360
13:46Off we go then
13:47John

13:5152 times 5
13:53Is your 10
13:5410
13:55And add them
13:55Nice and straightforward
13:56Thank you, Glenn
13:58Exactly the same way
13:59Yeah
13:59All right
14:00Just for the hell
14:01I don't need to see that
14:02Thank you
14:03Still that three-point difference
14:0736 to 33
14:08John in the lead
14:10As we turn to Jay
14:11Jay
14:11Since we last met you
14:14You've enraged an entire nation
14:16How did you manage that?
14:18It was an accident
14:19Kind of
14:20I'd gone to Paris
14:23We were recording the 100th episode
14:24Of The Kitchen Cabinet
14:25Which is the Radio 4 show
14:26I do about food
14:27Yeah
14:27And having to be in Paris
14:28I thought
14:29I'll go to one of the great gastro palaces
14:30I knew it would be stupidly expensive
14:32I'm talking 300 euros a head expensive
14:35Oh dear
14:36But I thought I'd find out
14:37What that kind of money would buy you
14:39And what it bought me
14:40Was a very, very disappointing meal
14:41It was hideous in every way
14:43And I would say
14:43Compared to expectation
14:45You have expectation
14:46Related to money
14:47Where food is concerned
14:48It was probably the most disappointing
14:50Meal of my 18 years
14:51As a restaurant critic
14:52So it didn't make pretty reading
14:55This review of Le Sanc
14:56At the Geor Sanc hotel in Paris
14:58It went on to be
15:00I think
15:01Probably the most read
15:02Restaurant review of 2017
15:04Over 2 million views
15:06Went round the world
15:07Headlines in newspapers
15:09This Englishman dares
15:11To write a terrible review
15:12Of a French gastro palace
15:13All of the major French newspapers
15:16Wrote pieces
15:18And I think it's fair to say
15:19The entirety of the French nation
15:21Now thinks I'm an idiot
15:22But the rest of the world
15:23Rather likes me
15:24And I think that's better
15:25Than the other way round
15:26Sure
15:26Sure
15:27And this restaurant
15:28Which is sited
15:29In one of the great
15:30Hotels of Paris
15:32I guess
15:32The Georges Sanc here
15:33It's got stars
15:34And what have you
15:35Well it has
15:36I mean people then say
15:37Look if it's got all the stars
15:39In the awards
15:40The very top awards
15:41How can you then go along
15:42And say that it's not all that
15:44I actually say
15:44Well my job is to ignore
15:46What the guidebooks say
15:47And to pull up a chair at the table
15:49And say I'm a diner
15:50Yeah
15:51Show me what you got
15:51And will I enjoy it
15:53And I did say
15:56That it was full of
15:57You know
15:57A lot of plush furnishings
15:58Which were there
15:59To stifle the screams
16:00It was a good line
16:03Thank you very much
16:04You know
16:05The negative review
16:06The culture of the negative review
16:07It's something you've got to do
16:09Very very sparingly
16:10And have a very good reason
16:11To do it
16:12For sure
16:12And 300 euros ahead
16:14For very poor food
16:15And rather weird service
16:17For example
16:17The table was booked
16:19By my female companion
16:20But they gave her
16:21The menu without the prices
16:22Oh look
16:24It's just turned 1963
16:25That doesn't go on anywhere
16:27But in Paris
16:28It's Derigueur
16:29Even though
16:29She was the one
16:30Who booked the table
16:31I think everybody
16:32Should see the prices
16:33When they're that high
16:33Excellent
16:34Big round of applause
16:35That's a joke
16:36Thank you
16:3636 base 33
16:42Glen
16:42Let us go

18:14Alright
18:16Suzy
18:17There's a nice
18:18Six there as well
18:20Pneuma
18:21Linked to pneumonia
18:22We're talking about the lungs
18:23And breathing
18:23But Pneuma
18:24Is the vital spirit
18:25Soul
18:25Or creative force
18:26Of a person
18:27So that which is literally
18:29Breathed out
18:30Which is quite beautiful
18:31Well well

25:41You could have triolette, which is for seven.
25:46It's an eight-line poem, rhyming every three, of course.
25:51I should now make up one, but I'm not going to.
25:53That would be showy.
25:55Exactly.
25:55Let's leave that one to Susie.
25:57Susie.
25:58Anything else?
25:59Anything else?
26:00Triolette from me.
26:01No, 297s are likely.
26:03All right.
26:03So, John on 56, Glenn on 48, as we turn to you, Susie, for your wonderful origins of words.
26:09Well, I had a nice email in from Audrey Warwick in Nottingham, who said,
26:13whilst reading, I came across the lovely word, ramshackle.
26:16Do you know anything about its derivation?
26:19And yes, I do, after a little bit of digging.
26:23It originated on a much older word, ramshackled, so very similar.
26:28And if you follow the trail back quite a lot further, you'll hit ramsackle, which was a wonderful word.
26:34Around the sort of 14th century, you'll find this.
26:36And that, of course, was a precursor, if you like, of our modern ransack.
26:41It meant to search thoroughly in order to find something.
26:45Now, that, in turn, was a word, perhaps unsurprisingly, brought over by the Vikings.
26:50Vikings, as we know, given us so many words in English, and a lot of them were to do with slaughter,
26:55thanks to their plundering and their pillaging.
26:57So they gave us club, they gave us slaughter itself, gun, scathe, which meant to injure, and, of course, berserk.
27:04Berserk being the bear shirt that these Vikings would wear.
27:08No armour, just a bear shirt.
27:09They were going to a crazed frenzy and then go into battle, which is, of course, where we get going berserk from today.
27:16But going back to ransacking, ransacking is what they did when they came, and it meant house seek.
27:24So they would seek out a house and then they would pillage it.
27:26But actually, as it went on, it became harnessed, if you like, by the authorities, by the police.
27:32So it actually flipped and it became a search of a house in order to find stolen booty that had been plundered from somebody else.
27:40So it was very much a law enforcement term.
27:43Then it got overtaken by the criminal element again, if you like, and ransacking became associated with burglary, which is where we leave it today.
27:51But going back to ramshackle, the result of a lot of ransacking is that your house is in a complete and utter mess.
27:58And that was why something that's been ransacked is left in a dilapidated, utterly run-down, shaky and unable-to-stand estate.
28:07And that is where we got ramshackle from today.
28:09Fantastic.
28:11So good.
28:15So good.
28:1756 to 48, John in the lead.
28:19John, you're back again. Let us go.

31:22Yeah, I saw that.
31:23I thought I was unsure if it ended or not.
31:25Well done, well done, Jane.

33:07and you get 530.
33:08Oh, high blood.
