00:00For this week, we're going to talk about infection in the prostate.
00:04As you can imagine, infection in the prostate is named as prostatitis.
00:15Prostatitis can be developed into two categories.
00:19One group is called acute prostatitis.
00:22This is when an acute infection in the prostate resulting in severe pain,
00:26pain on ejaculation, blood in your semen and also sometimes high temperature.
00:32This is quite serious.
00:34It usually is as a result of immunocompromised
00:37or somebody who had a biopsy of the prostate
00:40or somebody who has an infection that creates an abscess in the prostate.
00:44And this can be incredibly painful
00:46and non-treatment of this condition can result in sepsis.
00:50So acute prostatitis itself will require intravenous antibiotics
00:54and oftentimes, men have to be admitted to the hospital
00:59for several days for intravenous antibiotics.
01:02But on the contrary,
01:05chronic prostatitis is a condition that can happen in a less severe form.
01:12Chronic prostatitis can happen in a symptomatic manner
01:17and non-symptomatic manner.
01:19Non-symptomatic is when the prostatitis result in high PSA,
01:23the biopsy shows that there's inflammatory changes in the prostate
01:27so it is not apparent to the person itself having no symptoms at all.
01:33However, chronic prostatitis such as chronic bacterial prostatitis
01:37can be the vein of many men's life
01:39that can create pelvic pain, difficulty in passing urine,
01:44frequent urination, painful ejaculation and that comes on and off.
01:49It typically is triggered by dehydration.
01:53However, certain foods such as spicy food or food rich in uric acid
01:58such as shellfish and also nuts and beans and also red meat
02:02can also trigger prostatitis resulting in intermittent frequent urination,
02:08urgency and frequency.
02:11And chronic prostatitis apart from needing antibiotics
02:14sometimes will require medications such as alpha blockers,
02:185-alpha reductase inhibitors and so anti-inflammatory.
02:23And all these will help to suppress inflammation
02:25and result in improvement on the symptoms.
02:29And oftentimes, this is coming on a recurrent basis
02:32and it will need to be treated on a regular basis.
02:35For the new month of May, we're focusing on another form of infection,
02:40sometimes sexually transmitted
02:42and then it is a form of infection caused by a virus called HPV.
02:47Then you need to stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
