The first party political broadcasts (PPBs) kicked off today (April 25). These are the highlights from the Workers' Party (WP) broadcast.
Transcript
00:00Each time we say the pledge, we commit that we will build a democratic society.
00:09The word build must have been carefully chosen by Mr. S. Rajaratnam when he wrote the pledge.
00:16It means that a democratic society requires hard work to establish and to maintain.
00:24The Workers' Party takes this promise to work hard seriously.
00:29Let me highlight three ways in which the Workers' Party works for Singapore and Singaporeans.
00:36First, we run town councils and we run them as well as the PAP does.
00:41If voters put their trust in us, the Workers' Party will leverage our town council experience to serve our current and new constituencies well.
00:50The second way in which we work for Singapore is in Parliament.
00:54When we vote in Parliament, we do not need to toe the PAP's line.
00:59We oppose measures that we believe are not in the national interest.
01:03But when it is right to do so, we support government bills and even constitutional amendments.
01:09The third way that the Workers' Party works for Singapore is by building for the future.
01:16Besides Workers' Party constituencies, we visit homes and public areas in other constituencies to engage with residents and listen to their concerns.
01:26We have done this consistently for years and not only at election time.
01:32It is important for Singapore's democracy for the Workers' Party to win more constituencies.
01:38One or even two WPGRCs can be easily lost.
01:44Nothing can be taken for granted.
01:47With more Workers' Party constituencies comes a higher chance that Parliament will continue to have a fully elected democratic opposition presence for the longer term.
01:57This will make our system stable and sustainable for the future.
02:03The Workers' Party will not form the next government.
02:07The PAP will certainly do so.
02:10But the Workers' Party needs your support to strengthen our presence in Parliament.
