00:11:00and there he goes.
00:11:01Uwall's moving up fast now,
00:11:02and Brandon's tagging right along.
00:11:04Where Uwall goes,
00:11:05he goes too.
00:11:06Only Jonesy's not going to let him by.
00:11:07He's pouring it on.

00:11:14But Brandon's shaking loose.
00:11:14He's gone from 12th to 5th place,
00:11:16and now he's challenging for fourth.
00:11:17That guy's really in a hurry.
00:11:19He must have a hot day after the race.
00:11:20Is Charlie Quinn still leading,
00:11:22and there's Uwall,
00:11:22pouring on the coal.
00:11:23He's trying to get away from Brandon,
00:11:25but Brandon's closing again.
00:11:26They're both getting up there now,
00:11:27with Uwall moving into second spot,
00:11:29and Brandon's coming into third
00:11:30with everybody after him.
00:11:31The race is hot and getting hotter.
00:11:32Uh-oh,
00:11:33Brandon's in the slide.
00:11:34Hold it.
00:11:34He held it.
00:11:35It's a good thing he did
00:11:36with that free-prawl behind him.
00:11:37They're laughing slower cars now.
00:11:38Brandon's moving up with Uwall,
00:11:39starting an argument for second place,
00:11:41and they're going to take Clint.
00:11:42There's Uwall on the outside,
00:11:43and Brandon's moving up
00:11:44between him and Clint at 22.
00:11:45That rip-roaring son of a gun
00:11:46from Arizona's led all the way,
00:11:48and look at him giving the gun now.
00:11:50He's riding that white line.
00:11:51He's holding him off.
00:11:52All three in a row,
00:11:52and nobody giving it in.
00:11:53But Clint can't stay up there.
00:11:55The race is too hot.
00:11:56Uwall and Brandon are moving ahead.
00:11:57Two of them still side to side.
00:11:59Brandon's going into the lead
00:11:59by half a wheel.
00:12:01Now they're starting to lap slower cars.
00:12:02Uwall number one is leading.
00:12:04Mike Brandon in 17 is right with him.
00:12:05In third spot,
00:12:06Charlie Clint.
00:12:07He's going to stay up there
00:12:08and cop show money
00:12:08if he can't do any better.
00:12:09Right in their tails,
00:12:10those daredevils,
00:12:11Red Jones and Dinky Debra
00:12:12are leading the pack,
00:12:12going like crazy.

00:12:16And now,
00:12:16champion Joe Uwall's
00:12:17jumping well in the lead
00:12:18out of that turn.
00:12:19Everybody's yelling
00:12:19for their favorite driver,
00:12:20and that's Uwall number one.
00:12:22Uwall can't get away from him.
00:12:25And there's Charlie Quinn.
00:12:26He ain't licked yet.
00:12:27He's still staying with him.
00:12:28Brandon is trying to take Uwall
00:12:29on the inside.
00:12:30They're working like bad,
00:12:31fighting those cars in the turn.
00:12:33And now they're battling it
00:12:34out in the lead.
00:12:34It's Brandon trying to get away,
00:12:35but he can't do it.
00:12:36Uwall's in the lead.
00:12:37Uwall's in the lead.
00:12:38Uwall's right back
00:12:38to the front spot, folks.
00:12:39Uwall number one.
00:12:40Champion Joe Uwall
00:12:41number one knows
00:12:41every trick in the train
00:12:42and every time Brandon
00:12:43tries to grab an inch
00:12:43it's Uwall
00:12:44that shuts the gate on him.
00:12:45They're tying each other
00:12:46up a notch through the turn.
00:12:47They look like
00:12:48they're tying together.
00:12:49I'm telling you folks,
00:12:50this isn't one for the book.
00:12:51I don't know where
00:12:51they get all the power
00:12:52and boy, they got it.
00:12:53I mean, he won't
00:12:53you're not far away
00:12:54and still anybody great.
00:12:55These boys are hitting
00:12:56the back of the space
00:12:56we've seen in this practice.
00:12:58They're making fun
00:12:58for anybody to stand.
00:12:59So let's do that time.
00:13:01Nothing's got to give.
00:13:02They can't give up
00:13:02the space much longer.
00:13:03It's beginning to tell right now.
00:13:04Brandon's pulling ahead
00:13:05and it looks like
00:13:06Uwall can't hold.
00:13:07But you all ain't giving up.
00:13:08Captain Joe Uwall number one
00:13:09is a hard guy to meet.
00:13:10He's making another bit for it.
00:13:11It's now or never.
00:13:11They're coming into the last lap
00:13:12and Brandon's got the edge
00:13:13as they go into the turn.
00:13:14But it ain't much of an edge.
00:13:15Fairly through that turn
00:13:16Uwall's riding with him again.
00:13:17He can still make it
00:13:18and Brandon knows
00:13:19that the race ain't over yet.
00:13:20They're lapping Samkineer
00:13:21in at number 38.
00:13:22He's gone back.
00:13:23Look out, he's hit him
00:13:24to the wall, he hits him.
00:13:25He's lost the wheel.
00:13:27Only one car can get through
00:13:28and it's Brandon
00:13:29going straight ahead.
00:13:30Uwall's riding right now.
00:13:34Brandon's all right.
00:13:35He got away
00:13:36for three car cracker.
00:13:37Here he is.
00:13:38He's the winner.
00:13:41That was pretty ruthless.
00:13:45Will they let him
00:13:46get away with it?
00:13:47There's no rule against it.
00:13:48He didn't have to
00:13:48ride a guy into a wreck.
00:13:49But he was in there to win
00:13:50so he just kept going.
00:13:52Winner of the main event

00:14:14on Joe Uwall.
00:14:17Well
00:14:17I guess that winds it up
00:14:19for tonight folks.
00:14:26They're taking their time
00:14:27picking Uwall up.
00:14:28I'm going over to the pit.
00:14:42You're not going to make
00:14:43something out of this.
00:14:44I want to hear what
00:14:44Brandon has to say for
00:14:45himself.
00:14:46Just another crack up.
00:14:47That's your idea of just
00:14:48another crack up?
00:14:48He killed that man
00:14:49as surely as if he'd
00:14:50shot him.
00:14:50Now wait a minute.
00:14:51Listen.
00:14:51What went on out there?
00:15:11Oh a thing like that
00:15:12happens.
00:15:13It's happened before
00:15:14and it'll happen again.
00:15:15Did it happen like that
00:15:15at Trenton?
00:15:16You killed a man there
00:15:17didn't you?
00:15:18A man got killed.
00:15:19How did it happen
00:15:20this time?
00:15:21Well you saw it
00:15:21why ask me?
00:15:22They say he didn't
00:15:23have room to go
00:15:23between the wreck
00:15:24and the crash wall.
00:15:25They say.
00:15:25Well maybe they know.
00:15:26I was half a length ahead
00:15:27and I never looked back
00:15:28when I'm driving.
00:15:29They say you should
00:15:29have given him room.
00:15:30They say they say.
00:15:30What do I care what
00:15:31they say?
00:15:31In this business
00:15:32you've got to look
00:15:32out for yourself.
00:15:33If I'd been in
00:15:34Uwall's place
00:15:34I'd have got through.
00:15:35He just didn't think
00:15:35fast enough.
00:15:36That's all.
00:15:37Oh.
00:15:38So it was him or you
00:15:39but it wasn't going
00:15:40to be you.
00:15:41That's the way you
00:15:41operate isn't it?
00:15:42Come on Greg.
00:15:46Let's go.
00:16:03He killed a man.
00:16:05He killed a man
00:16:06and while the...
00:16:07Yes.
00:16:09Never mind the
00:16:10Barrington stuff
00:16:11hold the entire
00:16:11column.
00:16:12I told you I'm
00:16:13rushing through
00:16:13another to take
00:16:14its place.
00:16:17He killed a man.
00:16:18He killed a man
00:16:19and while the...
00:16:20Corpse lay on
00:16:22the blackened
00:16:22grass he said
00:16:23in this business
00:16:24you've got to
00:16:25look out for
00:16:25yourself.
00:16:27And then he lit
00:16:27a cigarette.
00:16:28He didn't give
00:16:29a hoot.
00:16:30He said it's
00:16:30happened before
00:16:31and it'll happen
00:16:31again.
00:16:32He was right.
00:16:33It did happen
00:16:34before.
00:16:35At Trenton.
00:16:35He killed a man
00:16:36there and was
00:16:36suspended for
00:16:37reckless driving.
00:16:38You can read
00:16:39the rest of it
00:16:39yourself.
00:16:39I've read it.
00:16:40The whole column
00:16:40is about you
00:16:41and the crack-up.
00:16:42It's all over
00:16:42the country.
00:16:43This sort of
00:16:43thing can padlock
00:16:44every track we've
00:16:44got.
00:16:45Close us right
00:16:45down.
00:16:45Why?
00:16:46Because of what
00:16:46she says about
00:16:47me?
00:16:47What she says
00:16:48about you
00:16:48don't affect us.
00:16:49I'm getting
00:16:50at something else.
00:16:51We're having
00:16:51too many fatal
00:16:52crack-ups.
00:16:52And you were
00:16:53right in the
00:16:53middle of a
00:16:53couple of them.
00:16:54Well don't
00:16:54blame me.
00:16:54If the guys
00:16:55can't figure the
00:16:55track and if
00:16:56they don't know
00:16:56what they're
00:16:56doing when they
00:16:57get out there
00:16:57that's tough.
00:16:58But this is a
00:16:59tough racket.
00:16:59I don't care
00:17:00who did what
00:17:00or who's to
00:17:10since this
00:17:10column came
00:17:11out.
00:17:11A million
00:17:11phone calls.
00:17:12I had the
00:17:12line disconnected
00:17:13to shut
00:17:13them up.
00:17:14Well you're
00:17:15working around
00:17:15to something.
00:17:16What have you
00:17:17two bright boys
00:17:17figured out?
00:17:18Figures only one
00:17:19way.
00:17:19We've got to do
00:17:19something to
00:17:20head off the
00:17:20papers.
00:17:21We've got to
00:17:22get rid of
00:17:22you.
00:17:25You mean I'm
00:17:26barred?
00:17:27So roll me
00:17:27out.
00:17:28Oh but that's
00:17:28as good as
00:17:29admitting she's
00:17:29right.
00:17:30I know that.
00:17:31I don't like to
00:17:31do this to you
00:17:32Brannon.
00:17:32Losing you is
00:17:33losing money.
00:17:34But that's the
00:17:34way it's got to
00:17:35be.
00:17:35You can see the
00:17:36spot we're in
00:17:36can't you?
00:17:39Sure, sure.
00:17:41You're scared.
00:17:42Backing up a
00:17:43dame who takes
00:17:43her first look
00:17:44at a race and
00:17:44inside of ten
00:17:45minutes knows
00:17:46enough about it
00:17:46to tell you and
00:17:47me and the rest
00:17:47of the world
00:17:48our business.
00:17:49She says I
00:17:49ought to be
00:17:50barred so I'm
00:17:50barred.
00:17:51She can print
00:17:52anything she
00:17:52thinks about me
00:17:53and get away
00:17:53with it.
00:17:54Well nobody
00:17:54could print
00:17:55what I think
00:17:55about her.
00:17:56And that goes
00:17:57for you too.
00:17:58There are plenty
00:17:58of other tracks
00:17:59Continental's been
00:18:00begging me to
00:18:00race over there.
00:18:01I don't need
00:18:01you.
00:18:01Take it easy.
00:18:02This whole thing's
00:18:03going to blow
00:18:03over.
00:18:06What's that
00:18:13name again?
00:18:14Brannon?
00:18:16Mike Brannon?
00:18:18I could have
00:18:18used you.
00:18:19Been glad to.
00:18:20Not now.
00:18:20All I need is
00:18:21for you to
00:18:22crack somebody
00:18:23up in one
00:18:23of my tracks.
00:18:24Would I
00:18:24be in trouble?
00:18:25You're a hot
00:18:26potato, Brannon.
00:18:27Ain't for me.
00:18:28Sorry.
00:18:33Come on.
00:18:36Come on.
00:19:06Hold it. You're not starting.
00:19:25Why not? I qualified my car.
00:19:27Yes, under a name that's not your own.
00:19:29It's right here in the paper.
00:19:36If we'd known your real name, we'd never let you through the gate.
00:19:42A driver like you can cause a lot of trouble.
00:19:45Where is this newspaper office?
00:19:46Do you no good to go down there.
00:20:06You the editor?
00:20:13Yes.
00:20:14Did Regina Forbes tell you to reprint this?
00:20:17Nobody tells me what to print.
00:20:19One of my reporters thought he recognized you.
00:20:21We checked up.
00:20:23You'll always be recognized.
00:20:24You were a hero once.
00:20:25That column's followed me all over.
00:20:26Everybody's read it or heard about it.
00:20:28When I'm flat on my back, I get myself one chance to race.
00:20:31Then you come out with it.
00:20:33What are you trying to do to me?
00:20:34I was performing a public service just as Miss Forbes did
00:20:37in drawing attention to you in the beginning.
00:20:39My concern is the safety of our local...
00:20:41Your concern is just the same as hers.
00:20:43Anything for a sensation.
00:20:45You picked on me for the same reason she did.
00:20:47Somebody to put on the griddle.
00:20:49Well, I've fried long enough.
00:20:51Then I'm not going to be buffaloed any longer
00:20:52by some inky-fingered dame running around hollering murder.
00:20:56When I meet up with her again, she'll know about it.
00:21:00I'll take that pencil down from behind your ear
00:21:02and put this ad in your favor.
00:21:04For sale, hot midget racer.
00:21:08Offing motor.
00:21:10Torsion bar suspension.
00:21:13Complete with all spares.
00:21:15Extra wheels.
00:21:16The talented diva from Las Gala landed in New York yesterday
00:21:21with her new husband, number four.
00:21:23The first was a baron, the second a duke,
00:21:25the third a French marquis.
00:21:27Following this glittering lineup of nobility,
00:21:29our glamour puss appears to have slipped a little.
00:21:32Husband number four was born and raised in good old Yonkers.
00:21:34Congratulations, Mrs. Manny Snits.
00:21:36That's all the social stuff.
00:21:38Break there for the commercial.
00:21:39Say, here's a lovely pair.
00:21:40Try it on.
00:21:41Pick up with capital chit-chat.
00:21:43Use that latest item about Senator Brett.
00:21:45Add this.
00:21:46He's in Hot Springs now.
00:21:48There's only one man in Washington who takes more vacations.
00:21:50Mr. Barrington is outside.
00:21:57Dwight Barrington?
00:21:58He flew here especially to see you.
00:21:59And is he mad?
00:22:00I don't wonder after the way you've been working him over.
00:22:03Oh, he'd love to shut me up.
00:22:05Okay, Jane, you bring him in.
00:22:06Wait.
00:22:07Don't you think I'd better take care of this?
00:22:08No, no, you stand by.
00:22:09I can handle him.
00:22:10Good.
00:22:10But have your answers ready and be sure you're right.
00:22:12Have I missed Jess?
00:22:13Okay, Jane.
00:22:14Here's what you said about him yesterday.
00:22:19More on Barrington.
00:22:20His pension insurance scheme cannot and never will pay off.
00:22:23His bonds are succrobate.
00:22:24The capital he raised has been sunk in dry oil wells and rainbow dreams.
00:22:28Nobody has yet received a dime and he's now out to raise more millions.
00:22:31Why doesn't the federal government look into this?
00:22:33Fine, fine.
00:22:34Now we'll hear what he has to say.
00:22:35Be sure to take down every word.
00:22:39How do you do, sir?
00:22:43Miss Forbes.
00:22:44Mr. Barrington.
00:22:44Something on your mind?
00:22:45You know what's on my mind.
00:22:47This campaign of yours against me in your column and on the air.
00:22:51I don't know where you get your misinformation.
00:22:53But these damaging statements against me have got to stop once and for all.
00:22:56Try those with a ribbon.
00:22:58Miss Forbes, what you don't seem to understand is that organizing a nationwide private pension
00:23:03structure like this is a big undertaking.
00:23:05It takes work, planning, time, money.
00:23:09Your irresponsible gossip can keep us from raising it.
00:23:13If you leave us alone, we can begin making payments to our pensioners in a matter of weeks.
00:23:17You promised to make the payments last year.
00:23:18I made no such promise.
00:23:20You did.
00:23:20Or others made promises for you.
00:23:22That's the way you worked it in the wall, Seb Swindle, isn't it?
00:23:24In the Delaware mudflat deal.
00:23:26My name was dragged in.
00:23:27But I was cleared and you know it, only you choose to ignore it.
00:23:30Just as you ignore anything that isn't sensational.
00:23:32If there isn't a scandal there, you'll create one.
00:23:34Don't you think this heel is a little high, Greg?
00:23:35Butting into other people's business, prying into things that you don't understand, making
00:23:39trouble...
00:23:39I'll keep on making trouble for you until the federal government indicts you for fraud.
00:23:42I have nothing to fear from the federal government.
00:23:44Oh, but you have.
00:23:45You've wasted millions and now you're trying to finagle more.
00:23:47But you won't get it.
00:23:48And you're going to stop me?
00:23:49Yes.
00:23:50You've gotten away with it for years, but now the walls are closing in.
00:23:54It's useless to talk to you.
00:23:57I thought that if we discussed this thing personally, I might set you straight.
00:24:00But I see that that's hopeless.
00:24:02But I warn you, if these attacks continue...
00:24:05You'll sue me?
00:24:07You'll see what I'll do.
00:24:09I was all bluff, every word of it.
00:24:16He tried hard to frighten you, Regina.
00:24:17Oh, I've got him and he knows it.
00:24:18Type up those notes, I may use them.
00:24:20Anything else?
00:24:21Some new clippings.
00:24:21Check through them, will you, Greg?
00:24:22I'll try on the rest of these shoes.
00:24:24Well, there's nothing much here.
00:24:26I see that you're still keeping track of that race driver.
00:24:28Oh, I was curious as to what had happened to him.
00:24:30The last I read, he'd been barred off some track in Arkansas.
00:24:32That was weeks ago.
00:24:33He was really on the skids.
00:24:35Well, you loved that, didn't you?
00:24:36He asked for it.
00:24:37He was big and tough and so sure of himself.
00:24:40Well, it looks as though he's through now.
00:24:42Guess what he's doing?
00:24:42Working in a thrill circus.
00:24:44Thrill circus?
00:24:45And the most daring of the thrill drivers is Mike Brannan,
00:24:47crack auto racing driver and famed ex-marine.
00:24:50He's an ad here, too.
00:24:51Head-on crash at 60 miles an hour, leap through space,
00:24:54bumper-to-bumper wing-overs at a mile a minute,
00:24:56rocket, auto, and death-defying climax.
00:24:57Thrill spectacle of the century.
00:24:59Where is this, Greg?
00:25:00Why, don't tell me you're interested.
00:25:01Oh, don't be stupid, but the thing's worth a line or two in the column.
00:25:03Use it.
00:25:04Ex-bill and heads thrill circus.
00:25:05Forty cents general admission and a chance at the door prize.
00:25:08Imagine risking your neck for that.
00:25:11He's hit bottom, hasn't he?
00:25:13If there's nothing else, how about seeing what's on the wire?
00:25:15Good.
00:25:16Let's go.
00:25:46Here they are, ladies and gentlemen, the greatest auto daredevils the world has ever seen.
00:26:03Here they come bumper to bumper over the skis at a mile a minute, and they're not tied together.
00:26:07Each man is on his own.
00:26:09And now at 60 miles an hour, they're doing what nobody else would dare do at all.
00:26:13This is an exhibition of clockwork timing and supreme skill.
00:26:16This double car breakaway over the skis is something you'll never see anywhere else.
00:26:20They're warming up for the big drills coming later.
00:26:22Watch out for this, by inches, and never scrape a fender.
00:26:25They didn't have to be taught this one.
00:26:27They learned how to do it, dodging Sunday drivers.
00:26:30And now a triple drill spectacle.
00:26:32A human battery ram will attempt to smack through a bleeding wall of fire.
00:26:36And there he is, rushing head first in that blazing mass of fire.
00:26:38And he can get through it.
00:26:40I mean, careful, there's no turning back.
00:26:41Now I win!
00:26:43And here he comes and breaks that speed, and he'll break his neck if he misses.
00:26:49And now, folks, the greatest exhibition of precision driving the world has ever seen.
00:26:53Mile a minute speed.
00:26:54It takes ice cold nerve and hair bigger timing.
00:26:56But along with that man of many medals, that lady's next marine, the greatest automobile of them all,
00:27:01Mike Brennan, and there he is, ladies and gentlemen.
00:27:06So far, we've been warming up.
00:27:08Folks, only warming up.
00:27:08Here's where the big drills begin.
00:27:10Mike Brennan is now giving an excitation of air trigger balancing.
00:27:14Driving with only one hand and holding a silk handkerchief in the other.
00:27:17He is keeping the car on two wheels.
00:27:19Look at that Brennan go.
00:27:21He's about to attempt to snap roll.
00:27:23Watch him now.
00:27:23Watch him.
00:27:24Whoa!
00:27:25And there he is.
00:27:27Back on all four wheels and driving away.
00:27:29He's got complete control of that car all the time.
00:27:33But you ain't seen nothing yet, folks.
00:27:35You ain't seen nothing yet.
00:27:37These beats of skill and daring get tougher and more dangerous.
00:27:39He is now about to attempt the impossible.
00:27:41The catapult leap.
00:27:4285 features faced over another car.
00:27:45He made it!
00:27:46And here comes the second check.
00:27:47Can he do it again?
00:27:49He's dead!
00:27:50And now the big event of the evening, a stupendous super spectacle, the topper of this death-defying
00:27:55program, the Rocket Auto, driven at great-next speed through this solid wall of 20 tons
00:28:00of solid ice, filled into a barrier that would baffle a bulldozer.
00:28:04With dynamite cramped with the front bumpers, Mike Brennan will race to that giant wall of
00:28:08ice, and the dynamite is set to explode on contact.
00:28:11Mike Brennan knows the rest, but he's got the nerve.
00:28:13All right, find him.
00:28:14They're riding the rockets at the tail of his car, and there he is, taking off.
00:28:20Watch him go.
00:28:21He's picking up speed now.
00:28:23He'll smash into that wall going 70 miles an hour.
00:28:25Can this fearless driver get through alive?
00:28:27It don't look like it, but watch it!
00:28:29Watch it!
00:28:31He made it!
00:28:32He got through!
00:28:33It's a miracle!
00:28:34What a guy!
00:28:35And there he is, folks.
00:28:37Give him a great big hand.
00:28:39Give him a real hand, folks.
00:28:41A real big hand.
00:28:44And that's it for tonight, folks.
00:28:48Don't forget to come back.
00:28:49Bring your friends.
00:29:01How do you get the men to do these crazy stunts?
00:29:03They want to make a fast buck, lady.
00:29:04They must take an awful beating.
00:29:06Beating, they sure do.
00:29:07I've done them all myself, and I've broken every bone in my body, including my coccyx.
00:29:11Looks like I'm going to have to start breaking them all over again, too, because my star driver quits tonight.
00:29:16Pardon me, ladies.
00:29:25See you later, Mike.
00:29:27Yeah, sure.
00:29:27Look who's here.
00:29:36What do you want this time?
00:29:37I came to see the show.
00:29:38I've never seen one before.
00:29:39Did you see all you wanted?
00:29:41I've seen enough.
00:29:41That's fine, because that was my last performance.
00:29:45Don't hurry away, sister.
00:29:46I've been waiting to thank you for that nationwide publicity that was going to be better than money in the bank.
00:29:56You're welcome.
00:29:57You earned it.
00:29:58You figure I'm doing another column on me?
00:30:00You're only worth a couple of lines now.
00:30:01Don't write them.
00:30:03I've been risking my neck with this outfit.
00:30:04I hope they pay you well.
00:30:05A hundred bucks a show, and I've been saving every dime.
00:30:08I'm going to drive with the big cars now, and what you wrote about me doesn't go with them.
00:30:12So I'm warning you.
00:30:13Lay off of me in the future.
00:30:16You're warning me?
00:30:17You better listen to what I'm saying, or I'll knock that smile off your face.
00:30:23Knock it off.
00:30:26That's just about what I'd expect from you.
00:30:28The guys you run around with wouldn't do that, would they?
00:30:30Well, it's time somebody roughed you up a little.
00:30:32I can handle you, baby.
00:30:34You're just another dame to me.
00:30:41Greg, Miss Borkman.
00:31:11I've been trying to get hold of you all day.
00:31:13Oh, has she?
00:31:13Where have you been?
00:31:14Is that Greg?
00:31:15You better get in there fast.
00:31:19I want to talk to you.
00:31:20Hello, Regina.
00:31:22Something bothering you?
00:31:24Why did you put in this blast about Brannon?
00:31:26You told me to do an item on him.
00:31:27An item, yes.
00:31:27A line or two.
00:31:28I didn't say to write a book.
00:31:29It was just a paragraph.
00:31:30Yes, but it's what's in it.
00:31:31First you sneer it, and for being in a thrill circus, how low can a guy get?
00:31:34Then you ask if he's trying to break his own neck to make up for the ones he broke at Trenton and Newark.
00:31:38That's cheap, Greg.
00:31:39It hurts the column.
00:31:39Besides, we crucified him once.
00:31:41There's no need to run him into the ground.
00:31:43Could there be something personal in this?
00:31:46Personal?
00:31:47Why, you...
00:31:47I don't want to talk to anybody.
00:31:51I've only seen the man twice in my life.
00:31:53Twice or only once, surely, at Newark.
00:31:56Where'd you see him again?
00:31:58I meant twice at Newark.
00:32:00Before the race and after.
00:32:01Anyway, this is poor reporting.
00:32:02He's not with Chitwood and his daredevils anymore.
00:32:04Oh?
00:32:05Oh?
00:32:05Where's he gone?
00:32:08I don't know.
00:32:34How many times did this car run?
00:32:56Just once, Langhorne.
00:32:58She finished sixth on account of a faulty fuel pump.
00:33:00She's bumped out at Indianapolis on the last day of qualifying.
00:33:02Yeah, I know.
00:33:03That's why I fell in love with her.
00:33:05Oh, I saw your ad.
00:33:06That's why I'm here.
00:33:07Well, she's a tubular frame, torsion bar suspension,
00:33:10Norton steering,
00:33:12grudge hubs,
00:33:12Conzie, quick change rear end.
00:33:15Man, she's got all the latest gadgets.
00:33:17She's my baby.
00:33:19Did you ever see a prettier chassis?
00:33:21If she could cook, I'd marry her.
00:33:36This car was built for me.
00:33:39Say, did you drive to Indianapolis one time?
00:33:41Twice.
00:33:42I drove a Miller.
00:33:45Yeah, I sure would like to have this car
00:33:46for that hundred-mile race at Green Grove.
00:33:48You could win with her.
00:33:50Yeah, that's what I think.
00:33:51If I bought her, could I do my tuning here in your shop?
00:33:54I got no place of my own.
00:33:55Sure, you'd sleep here if you like.
00:33:57Would you lend me a pit crew?
00:33:58I'll do better than that.
00:33:59I'll go on myself.
00:34:01I love this car.
00:34:02I want to see her win.
00:34:06Well, I got $7,000.
00:34:09Catch.
00:34:09Well, the price is $10,000.
00:34:12You take the $7,000 now, and I'll pay you the rest after Green Grove.
00:34:15I suppose you don't win.
00:34:16I'll win.
00:34:17If I don't, we take back the car and keep the money I paid you.
00:34:20I'll give you a fair deal on that.
00:34:23I remember your name now.
00:34:24Brannon, isn't it?
00:34:26That's right.
00:34:26Mike Brannon.
00:34:27Well, you were driving midgets for a while.
00:34:30You got a lot of publicity, too, didn't you?
00:34:32Yeah, I got some more to pay.
00:34:35Yeah.
00:34:35I got some more to pay.
00:34:37Yeah, I got some more to pay for you.
00:34:41Yeah.
00:34:47Yeah.
00:34:49I got some more to pay.
00:34:52Yeah.
00:34:55Yeah.
00:34:55Yeah, that's right.
00:34:57Here we go.
00:34:57Yeah.
00:34:58Yeah.
00:34:59Yeah.
00:35:00Yeah.
00:35:00Yeah, it's funny.
00:35:00Yeah.
00:35:02It doesn't look good, Edgar.
00:35:03Yeah.
00:35:03Yeah.
00:35:03I get around, don't I?
00:35:09So does that column of yours.
00:35:11Would you like to hit me again?
00:35:12Would it do any good?
00:35:13No.
00:35:27Did you lose something?
00:35:30Listen, what are you doing here anyway?
00:35:32They told me you were walking the track.
00:35:33I mean, what are you doing in Illinois?
00:35:35I came to see tomorrow's race.
00:35:36You've no interest in racing.
00:35:37No, but my sponsor has.
00:35:39Who's he?
00:35:39Magnum Oil.
00:35:40Most of the cars are running on it.
00:35:41Well, I'm not.
00:35:43Look, about that crack in the cowl.
00:35:45Oh, save your breath.
00:35:47You're going to listen.
00:35:48Hold it.
00:35:50Back up.
00:35:52Go on.
00:35:52Further back.
00:35:53I didn't write it.
00:35:54Well, it was under your name.
00:35:55Well, it got in without my feet.
00:35:57Whoa, hold it.
00:35:59I'll bet.
00:36:00Now, come this way.
00:36:01I don't get this.
00:36:03Never mind.
00:36:03Just keep moving.
00:36:04Come on.
00:36:06Well, yeah, but what are you doing?
00:36:08Look at your heel sink in there.
00:36:09Doesn't that tell you something?
00:36:10Yeah.
00:36:11Tells me I'm ruining a good pair of shoes.
00:36:13Ah, you can afford them.
00:36:15Look at that soft spot.
00:36:16Just where I'll be gunning into the turn.
00:36:19That's what I'm doing.
00:36:20Looking for soft spots.
00:36:23Figuring where the sun will be and where the wind will hit me.
00:36:26Now, this is okay.
00:36:28I'll stay close to the rail.
00:36:30Give me six feet and I can get through anywhere.
00:36:32And without dynamite on your bumper, huh?
00:36:35Hey, listen.
00:36:35If you said all you came to say, why don't you go?
00:36:37This is a mild track.
00:36:38I'm not halfway around here.
00:36:39Go ahead.
00:36:40I'm not stopping you.
00:36:41You want to get in some guy's hair?
00:36:42Go find someone else.
00:36:44Yeah, but I like being in yours.
00:36:48Uh-oh.
00:36:49What's the matter?
00:36:50If you can spare me, I'll go back.
00:36:52I broke a heel.
00:36:58You'll ruin your socks.
00:37:05Woo!
00:37:12Come here.
00:37:17All the soft spots aren't on the track.
00:37:20Well, you keep your mind on the ones that are.
00:37:29What are your chances tomorrow?
00:37:32Um, all right, skip tomorrow.
00:37:33Where do you go after that?
00:37:35Springfield.
00:37:35Where after Springfield?
00:37:38You're just trying to keep my mind on the race, aren't you?
00:37:42Well, after that, it's the Indiana Fairgrounds,
00:37:45Milwaukee, Salem,
00:37:47and the season closes in Syracuse.
00:37:49That's when I break training.
00:37:52Want to make a date?
00:37:58You figure everything, don't you?
00:38:00Everything.
00:38:01Good-bye.
00:38:15Goodbye.
00:38:45Goodbye.
00:39:15Goodbye.
00:39:45He's not a half a length behind.
00:39:46This is going to be a high-speed draw all the way forward.
00:39:49Everybody's rolling.
00:39:50Anybody wants to stay in front, he's got to go.
00:39:53Comeback's got the lead for now, but Brannon's liable to move him over any time.
00:39:56He's got three red hot shoppers on his tail.
00:39:58They're jamming in there behind Brannon.
00:40:00He's pretty good, isn't he?
00:40:01He's good if he can stay up there.
00:40:02He's up there now.
00:40:05You know, I'm just beginning to figure out why we're here.
00:40:08Our sponsor invited us, remember?
00:40:09Of course, and you had no idea Brannon was racing today.
00:40:12Do you know this, Brannon, does he?
00:40:13I met him once, back east.
00:40:15He's quite a driver.
00:40:17Practically the only one not using magnum oil.
00:40:19He'll murder me if he won.
00:40:21Johnny Probeck's still in the lead at the end of the fastest 40 laps ever seen on this track.
00:40:2597.3 miles per hour, and the speed is still going up.
00:40:29It's car number 22 in seconds.
00:40:31No, no, he isn't.
00:40:32There's that Brannon again.
00:40:34He's going to make it hot for Probeck in 54.
00:40:36They're close.
00:40:37I do not want to beat him now except for the end of us.
00:40:39Anything can happen with cars that are currently distributed in place.
00:40:42They're really bunching in there.
00:40:44That ain't good.
00:40:45Brannon's trying to shake the magnet.
00:40:46They're coming to the Western.
00:40:47He wants to get out there ahead of 54.
00:40:49Brannon's sparking the race.
00:40:50Aging Probeck barns.
00:40:52Making the rest of the boys hustle to stay with him.
00:40:53He's Brannon down now.
00:40:55I've been up on 54.
00:40:56The pack's getting plenty cut-ups out there.
00:40:58They're blasting to a lot of dust.
00:41:00Brannon, take him this lap.
00:41:01Looks like he doesn't need magnum oil.
00:41:03He's coming through the Western.
00:41:06Brannon's closed up.
00:41:06Uh-oh, he's slowing up.
00:41:08He seems to be in trouble.
00:41:09Jack Layton, the number 14, both going ahead of him now.
00:41:12He's slowed right down.
00:41:13That motor don't sound good.
00:41:15I thought something would have to give him to face those boys of him going.
00:41:18It's tough, but just when he was ready to grab that lead.
00:41:21But his pit crew's all set.
00:41:22They're ready for him.
00:41:23They're forming a wheeled car like flies.
00:41:25Changing flux and full rear wheels.
00:41:27They're working every second.
00:41:29No waste motion anywhere.
00:41:30Every man knows what he's got to do, and he's doing it.
00:41:33But Brannon is as cool as a cucumber in there.
00:41:36They all are.
00:41:36But they're under terrific tension, with cars screaming by all the time.
00:41:40He's even further and further behind.
00:41:42A stop like this can kill a man's chances in a race.
00:41:44But those mechanics have thrown themselves out of joint to get him out of there.
00:41:48He's been in there now 15 seconds.
00:41:51That's a lot of time in a race like this.
00:41:52We'll start burning rubber when I get out there.
00:41:53Let's go.
00:41:54The hot runner's nearly half a lap ahead of him.
00:41:56And there they go into the back stretch.
00:41:57Come on, come on.
00:41:58Shake it up.
00:41:58Get me going.
00:41:59Number 22, Jim Davies, is now a second.
00:42:00It's about to move.
00:42:01Wait a minute.
00:42:03Four people, bite it out of a fourth spot.
00:42:05I've got to get the money to pay for this car.
00:42:06Let's go.
00:42:07Let's go.
00:42:08Hup-a-hup-a.
00:42:09Half a minute.
00:42:10But they're slamming on that last wheel.
00:42:11He'll be away any moment.
00:42:12There he goes.
00:42:21Both rear wheels slapped him on the back and got him out again in 36 seconds.
00:42:26Almost a lap behind him.
00:42:27I'm proud of it now.
00:42:28He'll never catch those babies.
00:42:30Well, isn't that too bad?
00:42:32Give me a cigarette.
00:42:33Now the front spots are still the same.
00:42:3654, 22.
00:42:37Maybe he's in for one of them to win, but it looks like Brannon's got other ideas.
00:42:41He's going like a loose bullet out there.
00:42:43And he's got one of the tail runners already, number nine.
00:42:46Brannon's right in there, pitching.
00:42:47He's out there alone.
00:42:48He's got the track all to himself now.
00:42:50And he's pitching everybody.
00:42:52Look at him go.
00:42:53The leaders haven't changed.
00:42:54It's Brobeck, Davies, and Van Vreden.
00:42:57But it's Brannon who's making this race.
00:42:58They said nobody could make a pit stop in a 100-mile race such as he did and still have
00:43:02a chance at winning it.
00:43:03But Brannon doesn't know how to quit.
00:43:05Now he's back in there driving like a wild man.
00:43:08His last 10 laps were a track record.
00:43:10He's after him.
00:43:11If he's got enough laps to do it in, he can still win.
00:43:14The second freaking speed over those last 10 laps was 98.
00:43:17He's terrific.
00:43:18Have you got a chance?
00:43:19He hasn't got a breath.
00:43:20My hope is she holds together.
00:43:26Watch it, watch it.
00:43:26There's a tractor.
00:43:27It's Brannon in there.
00:43:28No, no, he made it.
00:43:29He's driving right on through.
00:43:31That was Casso and Gorland in that spill.
00:43:33They're not fast.
00:43:34But they're both okay.
00:43:35They're out waiting for the crowd.
00:43:37Now over to the next message.
00:43:38Brannon is taking time in front of the tag.
00:43:40If he can see both this blistering pace, he'll get back later.
00:43:44Now coming into the west turn, it's Brobeck at 54.
00:43:46Then Jim Demmey, Luke Mayer, and Captain Moore.
00:43:49And they hit the stretch.
00:43:51They put out a signal that damaged pit, telling them how many laps to go.
00:43:55Nine laps.
00:43:56And to the stretch.
00:43:56There he is.
00:43:57He's standing on that throttle now.
00:44:00If he's holding to take that beating, he's leaving with his belt with Brobeck yet.
00:44:04They're all terrible.
00:44:04They come through that turn.
00:44:06It's spinning.
00:44:07It's close.
00:44:08Somebody's going to hit him.
00:44:09That's Brannon coming up.
00:44:10He made it on the inside and puts him in fourth place.
00:44:14What a driver.
00:44:14There's a boy who can make stop.
00:44:16Change plugs.
00:44:17Polish his throttle.
00:44:17Spin your eye.
00:44:18And get up there with only two reds to go.
00:44:20But distance is running out on him.
00:44:22Speed is everything now, folks.
00:44:23And he's catching.
00:44:24Jim Davies at 22.
00:44:25If he gets by, he's in third spot.
00:44:27And he's going to do it.
00:44:27He made it.
00:44:28He's out of the back.
00:44:30He's up there.
00:44:30He's third.
00:44:31And he's running out.
00:44:32He's in the back.
00:44:33He's in the back of the track now.
00:44:34And the whole crowd's with him.
00:44:36And there he goes after the ninth second spot.
00:44:38That's Ben's in the 27.
00:44:40And it's bearing down, going into the east turn there.
00:44:42He's closing up the distance.
00:44:43Frieden's a tough man to get around.
00:44:45But he's taking Frieden on the outside.
00:44:47He's back.
00:44:47He's running.
00:44:48He's grabbed second place.
00:44:49He's going after...
00:44:50Look at him go.
00:44:50He's showing them.
00:44:52You're putting on quite a show yourself.
00:44:54He's got to fight heavy traffic to get at him.
00:44:56And there's less than a lot to go.
00:44:57Can he make it?
00:44:58Can he get up there in time?
00:44:59He's closing in along the back stretch.
00:45:01They're both going.
00:45:03He's getting on the way.
00:45:04Giving him room.
00:45:06It's going to be a very close thing, folks.
00:45:08They're coming through the west turn now.
00:45:09They're heading for home.
00:45:10And it isn't over yet.
00:45:12Here they are.
00:45:12Probeck's still ahead.
00:45:13Brannon's trying.
00:45:14But he can't quite get up there.
00:45:15And Probeck's...
00:45:16Come on, Brannon.
00:45:20One more lap and get ahead of him.
00:45:22Jim Davis in 22.
00:45:24Well, that's it.
00:45:25Johnny's one of our boys.
00:45:26You want to meet him?
00:45:26She doesn't like race drivers.
00:45:27And there you have it, folks.
00:45:32Thanks for coming.
00:45:34And drive carefully going home.
00:45:37Well done, Brannon.
00:45:38You should have had a...
00:45:39Hey, man, what a ride you gave this baby.
00:45:42I thought you had it in the bag.
00:45:43What happened that last lap?
00:45:45Second place money doesn't hurt, does it?
00:45:47Maybe it's just a while you didn't win this one.
00:45:49The fast boy's been laying for you the next time out.
00:45:52And the big person's come later, don't they?
00:45:55You talk too much.
00:45:57You talk too much?
00:46:16You need to have a ride.
00:46:16The blonde on the end in the DeBret show caught a fast plane out of town last night with a well-known coffee king.
00:46:36Now his wife's really got grounds.
00:46:40The very rich, very social, and not too young Mrs. Theodore Crampton Coburg,
00:46:45who just gave birth amidst much fanfare,
00:46:47had a $20,000 layup, five doctors in attendance, and members of the press waiting with bated breath.
00:46:53The baby is quite normal after all. It only had one head.
00:46:58And now to bring you up to date on our old friend Dwight Barrington.
00:47:01Get me long distance.
00:47:03He was indicted yesterday on 14 counts of fraud.
00:47:05His gold-plated battery of high-pressure lawyers have sprung him under $100,000 bail,
00:47:10but his freedom is only temporary.
00:47:12Today they warned him he'll be lucky if they can get him off with 25 years.
00:47:16You've got away with it before, Mr. Barrington, but you can't sing-sing your way out of this one.
00:47:20And to all men, never forget,
00:47:22the sweet things you don't say to her will be said by someone else.
00:47:26Good night.
00:47:27Listen to Regina forms every week.
00:47:29Same time, same station.
00:47:30And remember, there's no oil like Magnum Oil.
00:47:32The oil is easy on your engine.
00:47:35We're off.
00:47:36We ran long. Did I come over all right?
00:47:41You're always wonderful, Regina. There's a long distance called for you, Syracuse.
00:47:43Can't you take care of it?
00:47:45I will if you like.
00:47:47Mike Brennan.
00:47:47Hello. Yes, it is.
00:48:01You won again today, didn't you?
00:48:03Congratulations.
00:48:04Thanks.
00:48:05That winds up the season.
00:48:07Haven't we got a date now?
00:48:08If we have, I'll come to New York.
00:48:10If not, I'll go on to Toledo.
00:48:12Um,
00:48:13I wouldn't go to Toledo.
00:48:17Shall we make it tomorrow night at 8?
00:48:19I'll pick you up.
00:48:20How do I find your apartment?
00:48:23Why don't you try the phone book?
00:48:25Nice to hear from you again.
00:48:26Goodbye.
00:48:26That sounded like a neat brush off.
00:48:32Yes.
00:48:34I thought I did very well.
00:48:35Well,
00:49:05ORGAN PLAYS
00:49:35ORGAN PLAYS
00:50:05ORGAN PLAYS
00:50:07You look better each time.
00:50:08You do too.
00:50:18What was that for?
00:50:19I just wanted to do it.
00:50:24You're quite a guy, aren't you?
00:50:25There's nobody like you.
00:50:52What do you mean by that?
00:50:54Well, you're not just any dame.
00:50:56Did you think I was?
00:50:58Sure, I told you, remember?
00:51:00Most dames, you're out for a few laughs, a couple of drinks.
00:51:03Spend a little time with them and then forget them.
00:51:05It doesn't work that way with you.
00:51:08Doesn't it?
00:51:09Stick around you long enough and something could happen.
00:51:12It happened a long time ago, Mike.
00:51:15You know that as well as I do.
00:51:17I know.
00:51:19Have your pardon, Miss Fultz.
00:51:20Your office is on the line.
00:51:22I don't want to talk to you now, thank you.
00:51:23Well, that might be important.
00:51:26It can't be as important as this.
00:51:29You mean I'm important to you?
00:51:32More than you know.
00:51:35Well, but you've got a big job, baby.
00:51:37Wonderful way of living.
00:51:39You're somebody.
00:51:40Mike, don't you know?
00:51:42You're nobody until somebody loves you.
00:51:44I know it now.
00:51:50I never thought about that before.
00:51:52I hadn't either.
00:51:54We don't, you know.
00:51:55Not people like you and me.
00:51:58We're alike in a lot of ways.
00:52:01But not in others.
00:52:02Well, that's what makes it good.
00:52:05Maybe it can keep us apart.
00:52:07You know, there are some things about you I can't...
00:52:24You know, there are some things about you I can't figure.
00:52:38One has always bothered me.
00:52:40Yeah?
00:52:41What's that?
00:52:41You won't like it.
00:52:42It's something you said that night at Newark.
00:52:45It's happened before.
00:52:47It will happen again.
00:52:51You still believe I killed that guy, don't you?
00:52:54I didn't say that.
00:52:55Of course not, but it's on your mind.
00:52:57It keeps coming up.
00:53:00Where you're concerned,
00:53:01I'll always be like a man acquitted of murder.
00:53:04You look at him and you wonder.
00:53:07Did he or didn't he?
00:53:09You can never be sure.
00:53:11Absolutely sure.
00:53:11I'd be sure if it never happened again.
00:53:15If it happened again,
00:53:17I'd do the same thing again.
00:53:18You deliberately ride a man into a wreck?
00:53:21That's what you believe I did, isn't it?
00:53:23It isn't what I believe.
00:53:24It's what I saw.
00:53:25It's what you did.
00:53:26What do you want me to do?
00:53:27Kill myself to please you?
00:53:31Well,
00:53:32now you see the thing that can keep us apart.
00:53:38Yes, you thought I was a heel.
00:53:40Well, give it time.
00:53:42Maybe I'll prove you're right.
00:53:44You should have gone to Toledo.
00:53:47I couldn't stay away from you.
00:53:50Miss Forbes, your office is on the line again.
00:53:51It's Mr. Craig.
00:53:52I'll take it.
00:53:56Yes, Craig.
00:53:57I'll be right over.
00:54:02I have to go back to the office.
00:54:04Something I have to take care of.
00:54:06I'm sorry, but
00:54:06maybe it's just as well.
00:54:10I'll take it.
00:54:11Check.
00:54:11Yes, sir.
00:54:13Could we say goodbye here?
00:54:15Sure.
00:54:16Mike, it looks like everything stops right here.
00:54:23Some things don't stop so easy.
00:54:28Don't ever forget.
00:54:31You're still quite a guy.
00:54:37Goodbye.
00:54:38You couldn't have taken care of this yourself, I suppose.
00:54:49I don't okay the column anymore.
00:54:51Not since that blow-off about your boyfriend.
00:54:53Your own orders, Regina.
00:54:54Oh, by the way,
00:54:55did the two of you have a pleasant evening?
00:54:57You know, you told me there was nothing in that.
00:54:59I don't think that's any business of yours,
00:55:00one way or the other.
00:55:01I think it is.
00:55:02Anything that interferes with the column is my business.
00:55:04Ask the city room to send up a copy boy right away, please.
00:55:10You know,
00:55:11I've been watching all this adolescent bi-play,
00:55:14this double talk on the telephone,
00:55:15cheering him on through thick and thin.
00:55:16No, I cheered him on.
00:55:17Who wouldn't?
00:55:18He deserved it after what I did to him.
00:55:19You did nothing to him.
00:55:21You called him a killer,
00:55:21and that's exactly what he is.
00:55:22He had to be to drive a tank the way he drove his,
00:55:25to do the things he got medals for doing.
00:55:26Oh, I wouldn't bring up his war record if I were you.
00:55:31That kind of a man has to have an extra dose of viciousness in him.
00:55:33It comes over him when he gets into a race.
00:55:35That's guts, not viciousness.
00:55:36It's more than that, and you know it.
00:55:37He's been involved in two fatal crack-ups.
00:55:39There'll be a third and a fourth
00:55:40if he doesn't kill himself in the meantime.
00:55:41There's a deadly kind of instinct in him.
00:55:43Kill or be killed.
00:55:44Him or me.
00:55:44Win.
00:55:45Any way but win.
00:55:46A man like that doesn't realize it's in him.
00:55:47A man can change.
00:55:48He can't change.
00:55:49He'll never change.
00:55:50And if you have any idea you can change him,
00:55:52forget it.
00:55:53Stay away from him, Reggie.
00:55:56That will be easy.
00:55:58He's on his way to Toledo,
00:55:59getting his car ready for Indianapolis.
00:56:00Indianapolis?
00:56:01He'll go all out to win.
00:56:02There's where you'll see
00:56:04what I've been trying to tell you.
00:56:07I won't see anything.
00:56:09I don't plan on being there.
00:56:10I don't plan on being there.
00:56:17I don't plan on being there.
00:56:18I don't plan on being there.
00:56:19I don't plan on being there.
00:56:20I don't plan on being there.
00:56:21I don't plan on being there.
00:56:22I don't plan on being there.
00:56:23I don't plan on being there.
00:56:24I don't plan on being there.
00:56:25I don't plan on being there.
00:56:26I don't plan on being there.
00:56:27I don't plan on being there.
00:56:28I don't plan on being there.
00:56:29I don't plan on being there.
00:56:30I don't plan on being there.
00:56:31I don't plan on being there.
00:56:32I don't plan on being there.
00:56:33I don't plan on being there.
00:56:34I don't plan on being there.
00:56:35I don't plan on being there.
00:56:36I don't plan on being there.
00:56:37I don't plan on being there.
00:56:38I don't plan on being there.
00:57:39This is Ted Husing bringing you the fifth day of the qualifying trials here at Indianapolis Speedway.
00:57:4468 cars have been entered for the famous 500-mile classic on Decoration Day, but only the 33 fastest cars can start.
00:57:51Tomorrow is the last day of qualifying, and everything is at high pitch here.
00:57:55Everybody is under tension.
00:57:57Ah, but the weather's pretty bad.
00:57:58The storm clouds have blown up, and I think it's going to rain, and that'll end the qualifying trials of the day.
00:58:03Out on the track now, Lou Neuhauser is on his last lap.
00:58:05He's been burning up the track at 129 miles per hour, and here he is, finishing very fast.
00:58:09Those thunder clouds over the north look very neat.
00:58:11Any messages?
00:58:12We're on the desk.
00:58:12And there's another car waiting to go out, the Brennan Special, number 17, driven by Mike Brennan.
00:58:18Officials are warning him if he doesn't get on the track now, the rain will stop him going out at all.
00:58:23He's been stalling, gambling on the weather.
00:58:25He can get extra speed out of that moisture-laden air just before the storm breaks, and he knows it.
00:58:29But he's taking a big chance.
00:58:30If the rain hits while he's on the track, they'll flag him in, for high speed on a wet track is dangerous.
00:58:35I'm forbidden.
00:58:36The officials want to get the qualifying over with before it rains.
00:58:39They're keeping right after him.
00:58:40If he wants to go, he'd better not hold back any longer.
00:58:43But Brennan isn't letting that worry him.
00:58:45He's going to be still ready, and he isn't ready yet.
00:58:48Lou Neuhauser's official qualifying speed, 129.2 miles per hour.
00:58:52That should put him in the race all right.
00:58:55Brennan's still holding back.
00:58:56It looks almost as if he's got that storm time.
00:58:58You know, I think he's finally made up his mind.
00:59:03Yes, he's going to go.
00:59:04Brennan's one of those drivers who figures everything ahead.
00:59:06He's kept his water warmed up.
00:59:08He can give it a gun right from the start, and that's just as well.
00:59:11It's going to be a race between him and that storm.
00:59:14Well, this is one way to see Brennan and still stay away from him.
00:59:17Those black clouds are going to unload any moment.
00:59:19Do you mind?
00:59:20I've got something important here.
00:59:22The verdict just came in on Dwight Barrington.
00:59:24Guilty on all counts.
00:59:25What did he get?
00:59:2525 years.
00:59:26He appealed it, I suppose?
00:59:27He's out on bail.
00:59:28He knows he hasn't a chance.
00:59:29You can take a bow, Regina.
00:59:30You bet I'll take a bow.
00:59:32I told him I'd keep after him until I got him.
00:59:34And you got him.
00:59:35But it's turning out a little differently with Brennan, isn't it?
00:59:38Coming around to the main stretch now, and he's traveling fast.
00:59:40Brennan's had only one warm-up lap.
00:59:42Usually they need two or three.
00:59:43But he may take the flag this first time around.
00:59:45Is he going to?
00:59:46I think he...
00:59:47Yes, his hand is up.
00:59:48He's taking the flag.
00:59:49There we go.
00:59:50He's blasting from the south.
00:59:51He's standing on that throttle and making time.
00:59:53He's right in the groove, barreling around to the back stretch.
00:59:56That's the fastest part of the course.
00:59:58He'll be hitting 160 miles an hour.
01:00:00Those storm clouds are right overhead in the long term.
01:00:02The air is absolutely still.
01:00:04Not a breath of wind.
01:00:05Driving conditions are perfect.
01:00:06And Brennan had that figured.
01:00:07That's why he waited.
01:00:08Now he's taking full advantage of it.
01:00:10Here he comes at the end of his opening lap, making terrific time.
01:00:13Brennan may set up the fastest speed of the day.
01:00:15He's just getting the flag.
01:00:16Back to watch him do it.
01:00:17Over 100,000 fans turn out every day to see these all-important trials.
01:00:21His time on that lap, one minute, eight seconds, right on the nose, 132.35 miles per hour.
01:00:26He's going to the north turn now.
01:00:28And there's a picture for you.
01:00:29He's the only moving thing out there.
01:00:30And how he's moving.
01:00:32The rain's just outside the track.
01:00:33It's going to be close between Brennan and that storm.
01:00:35And here he comes, the fastest thing we've seen on the track today.
01:00:38He's getting the flag for his last lap of the war.
01:00:41A good driver like Brennan makes high speed look easy.
01:00:44But believe me, it's anything but bad.
01:00:45And that time around, he made 132.37 miles per hour.
01:00:49Practically the same speed as his last lap.
01:00:51That's consistency.
01:00:52Everything under control.
01:00:54What a driver.
01:00:55Now he's going to do an off turn.
01:00:56And the rain's hitting the track out there.
01:00:57But he's beating it.
01:00:58He's coming around on his last lap.
01:01:00He's coming out of the home stretch.
01:01:02He's okay out of an off turn.
01:01:03And here he is.
01:01:05Here he is, bringing the rain with him.
01:01:08Well, that does it.
01:01:09Brennan's strategy paid off.
01:01:11His speed on that lap, 132.39 miles an hour.
01:01:14I'll give you all the official figures in just a moment.
01:01:17But I can tell you now, his speed is the fastest of the day.
01:01:21Now they know.
01:01:22Mike Brennan's one of the boys they've got to beat when they line up for the start on Decoration Day.
01:01:26It's all over anyway.
01:01:27I want to place a call to Indianapolis, please.
01:01:46I'd like to speak to Mike Brennan at the Indianapolis Speedway.
01:01:50Yes, that's right.
01:01:52Mike Brennan.
01:01:55I don't want any calls except the one I just placed to Mr. Brennan's.
01:01:58Very good, miss.
01:01:58Hello.
01:02:17Remember me?
01:02:17Yes, indeed, Mr. Brennan.
01:02:19I remember you very well, sir.
01:02:20Yes, she.
01:02:22Miss Forbes just placed a call for you at Indianapolis, sir.
01:02:25That may be you now.
01:02:26Excuse me.
01:02:26Hello.
01:02:31Is that my Indianapolis call, Benson?
01:02:33No, there's no need to try and locate him now.
01:02:35Benson, is that my call?
01:02:36Yes, miss.
01:02:38Cancel the call, please.
01:02:41Hello.
01:02:42Hello.
01:02:43Hello yourself.
01:02:44Oh, Mike, how are you?
01:02:46I saw you on television today.
01:02:48You were terrific.
01:02:49Congratulations.
01:02:50Oh, thanks.
01:02:51Is that the only reason you called me?
01:02:53No.
01:02:54I wanted to talk to you.
01:02:56It's Saturday night.
01:02:58I'm here all alone.
01:02:59Hmm.
01:03:00Well, I wish I could be there with you.
01:03:02Do you?
01:03:04Oh, I wish you could, too.
01:03:06Do you think there's a chance that you might send that butler of yours out to the movies?
01:03:11Oh, I think it could be a rain.
01:03:14Uh, too bad you're so busy at the track.
01:03:18I suppose you are.
01:03:19Oh, yes.
01:03:20They're working me night and day.
01:03:22Hey, uh, tell me, uh, what are you doing right now?
01:03:26Um, I brought a lot of stuff home from the office.
01:03:29I'm working, too.
01:03:30Oh, yes.
01:03:31I can see that.
01:03:33Uh, what do you, uh, look like tonight?
01:03:36I mean, uh, what are you wearing?
01:03:38Oh, a little something in silver and silk.
01:03:42Hmm.
01:03:43You mean, uh, something with curves?
01:03:45Ha, ha, you've got the idea.
01:03:47Yeah.
01:03:48I wish I could be right there now.
01:03:52I said, maybe it's just as well you're not.
01:03:55Yeah, I thought that's what you said.
01:03:57I think it would be pretty nice.
01:03:59Oh, it would.
01:04:01The fire is burning, but, oh, what good is a fire if it warms only me?
01:04:09I'd turn the lamp down low.
01:04:11Then you'd light my cigarette.
01:04:14And then you'd, uh, you'd tell me all the things you haven't been doing.
01:04:18I wouldn't believe you.
01:04:21And then you'd hold my hand, and I'd probably have to hold both of yours.
01:04:29Oh, it would be wonderful, Mike.
01:04:36Just what?
01:04:47Mike.
01:04:48Hello?
01:04:51Hello.
01:04:56Hello.
01:04:58I get around, don't I?
01:05:03Perfect timing, wasn't it?
01:05:04You call me and I walk right in.
01:05:06Now, let's see.
01:05:08What was all that you said?
01:05:09Uh, oh, yeah.
01:05:11You'd turn the lamp down low.
01:05:13Now, let's see.
01:05:19There was something else you...
01:05:21Oh, yes, the fire.
01:05:23What's the good of a fire if it warms only me?
01:05:26Oh.
01:05:28Now it warmed both of us.
01:05:29I'd, uh, light your cigarettes, you said.
01:05:37I'm not so sure I like this.
01:05:39You know you like it, baby.
01:05:42Don't you?
01:05:45Now, there was one...
01:05:46I'd hold your hand, you said.
01:05:55And I'd probably have to hold both of yours.
01:05:57I like that, you calling me.
01:06:03I liked your coming to see me.
01:06:06Well, I had to be in town to see an old aunt of mine.
01:06:09Oh.
01:06:09Oh.
01:06:10Oh.
01:06:10Oh.
01:06:10Oh.
01:06:11Oh.
01:06:12How does your old aunt look?
01:06:16She seems to be holding up pretty well.
01:06:20You stayed away from her a long time.
01:06:24Don't you think she ever gets lonely?
01:06:27No, no, no.
01:06:28She keeps pretty busy.
01:06:29She brings her work home with her.
01:06:31Oh.
01:06:32This, uh, this aunt of mine,
01:06:37you must be awfully fond of her.
01:06:42Coming along this way to see her.
01:06:44I am.
01:06:45Kind of.
01:06:46Does she have something special about her?
01:06:50Maybe.
01:06:51What she doesn't have, she doesn't need.
01:06:57I beg your pardon, miss, but there's a telephone call from Mr. Gregg.
01:07:02I told him you did not wish to take any calls, but he insisted.
01:07:06He said he must talk to you.
01:07:12Yes, Gregg.
01:07:13Regina.
01:07:14Dwight Barrington just killed himself.
01:07:18Killed himself?
01:07:20Oh, no.
01:07:22No, no, he couldn't have.
01:07:23Well, he did, my pet.
01:07:24And he went out in style.
01:07:26He had a conference with his lawyers.
01:07:27They told him his appeal would be hopeless.
01:07:29So, he smoked a cigar.
01:07:31Drained a snifter of cognac.
01:07:32Fitted a pistol to his ear and shot his brains out.
01:07:34But it's terrific, Regina.
01:07:36It's like an open admission of guilt.
01:07:38It'll be front page, from coast to coast, and you'll get all the credit.
01:07:41Credit?
01:07:42Oh, Greg.
01:07:44I feel as if I killed him.
01:07:46Well, don't be stupid, Regina.
01:07:48He couldn't face 25 years in jail, that's all.
01:07:50You want me to come over there?
01:07:51No, no.
01:07:53And there's no need to hold the column.
01:07:55The papers will have it ahead of us.
01:07:57I'll see you tomorrow at the office.
01:08:05Did you ever hear of Dwight Barrington?
01:08:07Sure.
01:08:08The guy you've been kneeling.
01:08:10He just killed himself.
01:08:17Well, some guys can take it, some can't.
01:08:19It seems you don't always have to drive a racing car to kill a man.
01:08:24You were only doing your job the way you saw him.
01:08:26I should have given him a chance.
01:08:27I never believed he'd do anything like this.
01:08:29You were only doing your job.
01:08:30What you don't understand is the man is dead because of me.
01:08:33You were only doing your job the same as I'm doing mine.
01:08:36I've told you that before.
01:08:38You're still so sure of yourself, aren't you?
01:08:40Still so sure that you're right.
01:08:43There must be something inside you that makes you the way you are.
01:08:48Maybe there has to be.
01:08:53Maybe.
01:08:55We just don't see things the same way.
01:08:58Are you coming to Indianapolis?
01:08:59I don't know. I don't think I want to see you drive again.
01:09:03I guess you're right.
01:09:05We don't see things the same way.
01:09:07Everything does stop right here.
01:09:37Everybody wants to see you drive them.
01:09:39Let's toll.
01:09:40Let's check out.
01:09:42Let's hear you our strengths.
01:09:43Yeah.
01:09:44Let's be honest today.
01:09:45Please hang out in front of me alone.
01:09:46Let's see here.
01:09:47Closeckeommeers.
01:09:48Closespace Project.
01:09:49At the Following,
01:09:52At the Following.
01:09:53We don't align the those things.
01:09:54We're notní but 1959.
01:10:55The one these drivers have been waiting for all year. Cars are now rolling out to the starting line, and the few still at the pits are getting a last-minute check-up.
01:11:03There's a crowd of a quarter million people here today. They've come from every state in the Union and every country on Earth.
01:11:09They're here for the thrills and the excitement which can only go with a high-speed spectacle of this kind, the fastest long-distance race in the world.
01:11:17There's a carnival atmosphere here. People have been coming since before dawn. Stands and bleachers and boxes are packed solid, and the infield is jammed.
01:11:24Why, the coolest men in all this excitement are the drivers themselves. Their machines are still wheeling out of the line, and the mechanics who push them are smarting uniforms that match the colors of the car.
01:11:34That was the 9.55 salute bomb. Only five minutes to go. And now everybody involved in the race are grouping of the starting line for the photographer.
01:11:44This is quite a tradition here. Drivers, mechanics, timekeepers, officials, yardbirds. Why, they all pose for their picture just before the race starts.
01:11:51That's for the scrapbook. I'll make a check on any last-minute changes in the lineup, and be back with you when the boys get rolling on their parade.
01:11:58Mike!
01:12:02I had to come.
01:12:03So I see.
01:12:04Mike, could we start all over?
01:12:07Hey, baby, what we had never stopped. Where are you sitting?
01:12:10Up there.
01:12:11Mike, I've never seen anything like this. It's terrific.
01:12:13So are you.
01:12:14It's like the 4th of July and a heavyweight fight in the World Series all rolled into one.
01:12:18Now I can see him.
01:12:22He takes a certain kind of guard.
01:12:26And that guy, he's a certain kind of dame.
01:12:31Mike!
01:12:31There goes another minute bomb.
01:12:33Standing here talking. Come on.
01:12:34Good luck.
01:12:35Thanks.
01:12:43You've fallen hard, haven't you, Reggie?
01:12:45It's too bad.
01:12:46He's going to kill somebody today, himself or somebody else.
01:12:57The cars are ready on the starting line, and in less than a minute they'll be off on the parade lap.
01:13:02This is the fastest field ever seen here at Indianapolis.
01:13:04Every one of these 33 cars is qualified at over 128 miles an hour.
01:13:08They're all ready to go, and they make quite a spectacle.
01:13:11Watch for signals and let me know where you get them.
01:13:13Okay, okay.
01:13:14Well, make your pit stops count.
01:13:15In and out fast.
01:13:17Everything's going to be fast here today, Mike.
01:13:19Here we go.
01:13:21Here, Mike.
01:13:25There's the bomb.
01:13:26There they go with the face of all these.
01:13:29Pour it on, Mike.
01:13:30Keep her in the groove.
01:13:31Sure, Mike.
01:13:32Let them hear your whistle.
01:13:32They keep formation all the way around the track, picking up skis as they go.
01:13:38There's a million dollars worth of fast equipment out there, and plenty of well-known names.
01:13:43Three-time winner Maury Rose on the front row.
01:13:45Back of him, handsome Johnny Parsons from California.
01:13:48There's Walt Faulkner.
01:13:49Jack McGrath.
01:13:49Daredevil Joey Chipwood.
01:13:51Stock car champion Byron Ford.
01:13:53There's Mike Granite.
01:13:54Ed Zhang.
01:13:55Lou Neuhauser.
01:13:56Ah, but go anywhere down the line, and you name a great driver.
01:13:58One who's doing what every race driver dreams about.
01:14:01He's out here on Decoration Day, going for 500 miles, and a purse of over $200,000.
01:14:07This Indianapolis Classic is bigger, richer, tougher than ever before.
01:14:10The cars are faster, the drivers more skillful.
01:14:13They're coming around now, rank on rank of machines, keeping beautiful formation out there,
01:14:17and picking up speed all the time.
01:14:18Why, you'll never see anything faster on wheels anywhere else in the world.
01:14:21And here they come out of the north turn, still holding formation as they roar down the stretch.
01:14:25And now the pace car begins to pull over.
01:14:27Remember, the speed's going up as they come to the line.
01:14:29It's going to be a 100 mile an hour start.
01:14:31And we're on the way of a beautiful start.
01:14:34We're on the way of a beautiful start.
01:14:35We're on the way of a beautiful start.
01:14:35We're on the way of a beautiful start.
01:14:57Here they come, Rory into the stretch.
01:15:05And as they hit the line again for the first lap, it's Rory Rose in the lead.
01:15:08Then comes Parsons, who ain't trying to walk, walk around Kedsang.
01:15:11They're hitting it hard right from the start.
01:15:13They're really traveling out there.
01:15:15This is going to be a wrecking smashing race.
01:15:18It's Rory Rose.
01:15:19Come out ahead of the end for the first 50 miles.
01:15:20His average speed, 127.53 miles per hour.
01:15:24In second place, Johnny Parsons, third, Lou Neuhausen, fourth, Kedsang.
01:15:28But nobody's letting him get away.
01:15:29The boys are really bending him around for those turns.
01:15:31And there's the fight for fifth place coming up.
01:15:47They're jamming through the north turn.
01:15:48Number 17, that's Brannan in there.
01:15:50Smart being 16, Chuck Rager 22, King Castle.
01:15:53But the fact of launching is dangerous.
01:15:54They know it, but they won't break it up until somebody gets in the clear.
01:16:01Going into the turn, Brannan's gone ahead of Castle.
01:16:05Now he's moving up between Schmaufe and Subway, barreling right on through.
01:16:09He's split that dogfight wide open.
01:16:11He's in front of the bunch as they come out of the north turn.
01:16:14And now they're all standing on a down-range stretch, really carrying the mail.
01:16:20And now it's Gordon Rose still leading that Johnny Parsons, Lou Neuhausen, Ed Zang,
01:16:24and Mike Brannan fighting for fifth place.
01:16:26They're running into traffic to make it their turn, lapping slower cars.
01:16:32Brannan at number 17 is moving up all the time.
01:16:41In an off-turn, Brannan is now passing Mack Kelly to number 15.
01:16:45And now he's closing in on Ed Zang.
01:16:47And he's calling.
01:16:48He's challenging Zang for fourth place.
01:16:50Brannan's going ahead, but Zang's pulling it on, trying to stay with him.
01:17:11They're both too fast in that turn, off the groove and riding wide.
01:17:14And there's Zang, right from the wall.
01:17:16Brannan's going right through, but there's a mix-up out there.
01:17:19They've locked wheels.
01:17:20Zang bounced off and tangled with McQuinn in 44.
01:17:22They're sliding across the track.
01:17:24Zang's hit the fence, but he's all right.
01:17:26He's all right.
01:17:27He got out and walked away.
01:17:28Nobody hurt him.
01:17:29For a moment, I thought that was it.
01:17:31What do you mean?
01:17:32I thought Brannan rode him into the wall.
01:17:34Well, he didn't.
01:17:35Mike was way ahead of him.
01:17:36Well, maybe that time, but the race isn't over yet.
01:17:39The pace is fast, and it's getting faster.
01:17:42It's 127.72 miles per hour for the first 150 miles.
01:17:45And that's a record for the distance.
01:17:47Bory Rose is still ahead in that front drive up in House Special.
01:17:51In second place is Lou Neuhauser in car number 49.
01:17:54Mike Brannan has just moved into third place with car number 17.
01:17:57And here he is down the main stretch.
01:17:59And Neuhauser's giving it everything, trying to stay ahead.
01:18:02Brannan's closing in.
01:18:03He's right on number 49 as they go through the south turn.
01:18:05Neuhauser's trying to hold him, really pushing that car.
01:18:08He's staying up there.
01:18:09Brannan can't get by.
01:18:10And they're both wide open.
01:18:20They're wheel to wheel out there, burning rubber.
01:18:22Brannan trying to move into second spot.
01:18:33And Brannan's taking him now.
01:18:34He's going ahead.
01:18:35But wait a minute.
01:18:35Newhouse is slowing down.
01:18:36There's smoke pouring into that car.
01:18:38Something let go.
01:18:39He couldn't stand the killing case.
01:18:41Well, that's all for Neuhauser.
01:18:45Brannan's up in second place and going away.
01:18:47Right in the groove and gunning Bory Rose.
01:18:55Brannan's been up in the top ten right from the start.
01:18:57Let me tell you, that boy's moving.
01:18:59He's really something, isn't he?
01:19:00He's something, all right.
01:19:01But he's got to travel to catch that rose.
01:19:03He'll get him.
01:19:04Time's running out here in Indianapolis.
01:19:06As we hit 275 miles, it's still Bory Rose out in front of number 31.
01:19:10He's never let up for a second.
01:19:11And he's driving like a wizard he is.
01:19:16And Mike Brown is only 16 seconds behind him.
01:19:23Bory Rose is really planning up lap prize running for that number 31.
01:19:26The leader gets $100 every time he comes around.
01:19:28So that's over $10,000 he's won already.
01:19:30Being in the lead really pays off.
01:19:32And here he is, completing his 275 mile.
01:19:35The great Bory Rose, three times another, now passing the stand.
01:19:39And there's a signal at his pit.
01:19:40Bory's being ordered in for gas.
01:19:42You know, these cars can't go the whole 500 miles without a year.
01:19:44And he'll stop at the end of his next lap.
01:19:46When Bory Rose comes in, that'll give Brown the lead.
01:19:50But he won't hold it long, because he'll have to make a pit stop any time now.
01:19:54Here's Brown bringing number 17 down the main stretch.
01:19:57He's still 16 seconds behind, and there's a signal out for Brown.
01:20:03What is bringing Mikey now for?
01:20:05He can make time with Bory in the pits.
01:20:06We can make more time for him right here.
01:20:08He's got to come in soon anyway.
01:20:09Now, we can beat Bory's boys at this.
01:20:10Let's cut down that 16-second lead.
01:20:12Now, when Mike comes in, let's do it right and do it fast.
01:20:14Be sure it's fast.
01:20:15Here's Bory Rose, number 31, coming along with the grandstand stretch.
01:20:21He's slowing right down and pulling over right now.
01:20:24This will be something to see.
01:20:26The lead cars, both in at the same time.
01:20:28They're bringing the race right into the pits.
01:20:30It's going to be a duel between the mechanics.
01:20:31Brandon's men will try to cut Bory's time at 16-second lead.
01:20:35The mechanics are on the track.
01:20:36They're already formed.
01:20:36The off-and-house especially is the front-drive car.
01:20:38And they've changed those two front wheels, the ones that take the beating.
01:20:41They're jumping in the car almost before it stops.
01:20:43Bory's taking a drink down there.
01:20:45And now he's using the rest of the water to cool himself off.
01:20:48He needs that because it's awfully hot work keeping this pack of lead puts.
01:20:51And there's Mike Brannon, number 17, coming down the stretch.
01:20:53He's pulling over, slowing down for his pit now.
01:20:56And his crew can't wait to get in the car.
01:20:58The Brannon special is a rear drive, so they'll change the two outside wheels.
01:21:02That means the same amount of work has to be done on both cars.
01:21:04They're keeping the motors running for a fast take-off.
01:21:07And look at those mechanics go to it.
01:21:08They're trained for fast work in the pits.
01:21:10Just like the driver's train.
01:21:11Come on, Mac.
01:21:12You said in and out fast.
01:21:13This pit stop won't hurt either Bory Rose or Brannon.
01:21:16They're both over a lap ahead.
01:21:18Brown's mechanics are very fast.
01:21:19One wheel's changed already.
01:21:20They're trying to get him out ahead of Bory Rose.
01:21:22Ah, but it looks like Bory's all set to go.
01:21:26He's gassed up.
01:21:27The tank's overflowing.
01:21:28They're spilling gas down there.
01:21:29It's caught on fire from a hot exhaust.
01:21:31She's on fire.
01:21:32But Bory's getting out of there.
01:21:33That tank could explode.
01:21:34The fire squad's right in here now,
01:21:36lighting up the CO2 gas, but it looks awfully bad.
01:21:38Oh, it's the worst kind of a break for Bory.
01:21:40He was all set to take off.
01:21:41This can put him out of the race, and he's been leading all the way.
01:21:44But now they're beginning to kill those claims.
01:21:45I think it's going to be all right.
01:21:47Yes, yes, Bory's getting ready to go back in there.
01:21:49There he goes.
01:21:49This has cost too valuable time.
01:21:51It can be the turning point of the race.
01:21:52They're rolling away now.
01:21:54That board is taking hold.
01:21:55And listen, George, I'm going to hurry to go.
01:22:02They're not being home the last wheel on track.
01:22:03He's all gasped up.
01:22:04Come on, make it snappy.
01:22:05And now he's rolling.
01:22:06And he's back in the race again, just five seconds behind where he rolled.
01:22:09He gained a little second.
01:22:11Now he's in the race.
01:22:11Now he's in the race.
01:22:12Now he's in the race.
01:22:12Now he's in the race.
01:22:14They're trying to break the whole board.
01:22:15He's in the race.
01:22:15He's in the race.
01:22:21They're back in there.
01:22:22They're bearing down.
01:22:22They've made their pit stops.
01:22:23And they won't stop again.
01:22:29Brannan goes speaking right after him.
01:22:30Maury Rose is blazing through the north turn.
01:22:46The traffic gear is slowing him a little.
01:22:48Brannan's closing that gap, moving right in on him.
01:22:50Locking slow and plums as he goes.
01:22:52They're coming flat out into the main stretch, giving it everything as they come past the stands.
01:22:56Maury's fighting to hold that lead.
01:22:58Maury Rose is still out ahead, but Brannan's cutting down that lead all the time.
01:23:09Maury Rose is still out ahead, but Brannan's cutting down that lead all the time.
01:23:09Maury Rose is still out ahead, but Brannan goes.
01:23:10Brannan comes with some kind of fingers from oxygen.
01:23:14And he's coming up with Maury Rawls.
01:23:41Brannan's overtaking number 31 on the inside.
01:23:43Brannan's right up with him.
01:23:45They're wheel to wheel.
01:24:03They're flying along the north stretch there.
01:24:05Brannan's going to take him.
01:24:07Brannan's going to take him down the left stretch there.
01:24:12Brannan out front.
01:24:13Mike Brannan, the number 17 in the lead.
01:24:17He's in the number one spot.
01:24:18Brannan's going to get away.
01:24:37Brannan's going to take him down the left stretch.
01:24:43They go along wheel to wheel in there, wide open, going full blast.
01:24:46And look, look, there's a crack up ahead of them.
01:24:51They're fighting back in the black.
01:24:53Brannan and Brannan are coming out fast.
01:24:55The only room for a car to get by.
01:24:56Brannan pulls up the crack and Brannan goes out through.
01:24:58And there goes Maury Rawls in 31 in the clear and in the lead again.
01:25:12Only one car could get through there.
01:25:14And Brannan waves rose on, then took to the infield and couldn't get back on the track.
01:25:18He spun out of control there, and then he flipped.
01:25:21What a magnificent sportsmanship.
01:25:23Tosser lights are on again.
01:25:25Yellow flags out all around the track.
01:25:27Everybody's slowed down.
01:25:28The car's holding position while the back stretch is cleared.
01:25:31Now the drivers who spun out there were Schmarke and Fasso.
01:25:33They're both all right.
01:25:34They're helping push their cars off the track.
01:25:37I'll give you the report on Brannan as soon as I get it.
01:25:42Go pick up the pieces, Reggie.
01:25:43They're all yours.
01:25:56Where's the hospital?
01:25:57I know we're there, Reggie.
01:26:07You can't go in here.
01:26:08Don't leave them out of the side.
01:26:12Don't leave them out of the side.
01:26:13Go ahead.
01:26:13I couldn't hold the car.
01:26:32That's all.
01:26:33I lost her.
01:26:34You pulled over to give him room.
01:26:36I didn't give him anything.
01:26:37I figured I could get back.
01:26:39Have it your own way.
01:26:41If I'd have got back, we'd have won it.
01:26:43Well, man can't win every time he starts.
01:26:46We'll win it next year, baby.
01:26:48Or the year after.
01:26:49How does it look?
01:26:50Nothing internal.
01:26:51You'll be all right.
01:26:53I was lucky.
01:26:54Mike, everything's all right now.
01:26:56With you and that column of yours and me and my car, we won't be together much.
01:27:00It'll be good and exciting when we are.
01:27:03I think you'd better go now.
01:27:05You don't have to go till I pass out.
01:27:07That won't be long.
01:27:09What's that for?
01:27:10This'll relax you.
01:27:11It'll take a bigger one than that to relax me now.
01:27:15I don't have to go till I pass out.
01:27:45I don't have to go till I pass out.
01:27:53I don't have to go till I pass out.
01:27:54It'll be great.
01:27:54It'll be great.
