On K'gari Anzac commemorations were held at the wreck of the Maheno. It was a hospital ship in Gallipoli and the western front and family members of some who served on the ship were there.

00:00Since it wrecked here on the east coast of Ghari in 1935, the TSS Mahino has served as a tourist attraction for visitors on the World Heritage listed island.
00:12But, 110 years ago, it was a beacon of hope on the horizon for soldiers standing on the beach at Anzac Cove.
00:20The Mahino was a medic ship at Gallipoli that would go on to rescue thousands of service men and women injured in combat.
00:28After the war, the Mahino returned to its original purpose as a passenger ship and was later sold to Japan for scrap metal.
00:36But, as it was being towed along its voyage north, it got caught in a bad storm, causing it to crash up on the beach.
00:43Now today, hundreds have gathered around the wreck for a special Anzac Day ceremony by the beach.
00:49In fact, the organisers have described it as probably one of the only Anzac Day ceremonies where it's appropriate to come barefoot and in board shorts.
00:57But, as the crowd paused for a minute, silence, and the only thing that could be heard was the sound of waves crashing against the wreck,
01:04everyone took a moment to reflect on a time that was much less peaceful than today.
01:09Among those was Wing Commander with the Royal Australian Air Force, Sarah Johnson, whose great-grandfather served on the ship all those years ago.
01:19Being here and just representing my family adds that little bit of extra honour to the service,
01:26and I really hope that my great-grandfather is proud of what we're doing and how we're showing our,
01:32or in our own small way, remembering what he did and trying to pass that legacy on.
01:38So yes, today's ceremony at the Mahino is about acknowledging the Anzacs,
01:42but also the medics, nurses, and all of those who supported them in their service.
