00:00MMR's Dreamstream Concert Series, 93.3 WMMR, Everything That Rocks.
00:07We are excited to welcome back into our studio a live performance, and we love to have live performances.
00:14She was here a while back to show us her chops.
00:19Her chops!
00:19And we were very, very impressed.
00:20Chops were shown.
00:21And chops have been shown, and they continue to be shown.
00:24But we were really, really impressed, and she's back, and we'll be performing actually a few shows in and around our area.
00:30Sold out, by the way, tomorrow night in Sayreville, and then they're playing The Electric Factory on Saturday.
00:35That is sold out.
00:37MMRBQ, they're going to be playing on the 19th.
00:38Yeah.
00:39Please welcome Dorothy to our studio.
00:41Yeah!
00:41Good morning.
00:42This morning.
00:43Good to see you, Dorothy.
00:44Good to see you guys.
00:44How have you been?
00:45I've been busy.
00:46I know.
00:47I know.
00:48That's a good thing, right?
00:49Yes.
00:50That's cool.
00:50Yes, living the dream.
00:51Can't complain.
00:52That's cool.
00:52And you guys are currently on tour with Greta Van Fleet.
00:55Oh, yes.
00:56So we've got two young groups together playing all over the place.
00:59Oh, we love them.
01:00Can't get enough.
01:01Yeah?
01:01They're so great.
01:02It's a bit of a phenomenon.
01:03As we perceived you and your story, such a great rock sound, and the pairing seems perfect.
01:12They're like our soulmate band.
01:14Yeah.
01:15Right.
01:15It's great.
01:16Because I know you're a fan of going back.
01:18You used to listen to your dad's records, and you indoctrinated into great rock bands.
01:25And I think everyone says, of course, that's the Led Zeppelin sounding band.
01:28But I think that it's a continuation of the sound.
01:31It's not a ripoff.
01:32And you are in the style and sound of some of the great rock bands.
01:37But it's an extension of the sound, and it's really cool.
01:40Yeah.
01:40Somebody's got to keep doing it.
01:42Yeah.
01:42Yeah.
01:43We don't live forever, but the music does.
01:44Yeah.
01:44And sometimes it appears bleak for rock, and then you guys come along.
01:48And it's like, oh, here we go.
01:49And the station's celebrating its 50th birthday.
01:51You know?
01:52So it's still got a pulse.
01:55Yeah.
01:55Yeah.
01:55Which is cool.
01:56Happy birthday.
01:56Yeah.
01:57You've been working with Linda Perry, and she is your manager, correct?
02:02And also produced your latest album.
02:0528 Days in the Valley, by the way.
02:06She is a legend, an absolute legend, songwriter, singer.
02:12So what's it like working with her?
02:15It's amazing.
02:16Yeah?
02:16I learned so much.
02:17You know, we did everything live with the band.
02:20And it was just, you know, it was hard at times.
02:23I don't think anyone slept, and we, like, burned through it really fast.
02:27So every track was live?
02:29Yes.
02:30Wow.
02:30That's awesome.
02:31Everybody was together in her studio, in the room, playing these guys, played on the record
02:36and wrote on the songs.
02:38And this is Owen Berry, and this is Eli Wolfmeyer.
02:41Morning, guys.
02:42Morning, guys.
02:43Owen and Eli.
02:44Drummers and bass players always get to sleep in.
02:46I know what?
02:48Screw those guys.
02:48You know?
02:49They may not get the glory, but damn it, they get the rest.
02:52I'm just going to air horn bunk out.
02:57We're up, you have to be up.
02:58Yeah.
02:59You talk about Linda Perry, and I was reading an interview with you, and you said that you
03:03guys were working on a song, and you went, like, across the street to get a cup of coffee.
03:07When you came back, she had already put everything together.
03:10Oh, yeah.
03:10That was down to the bottom.
03:12Yeah, yeah.
03:12Yeah.
03:13I went to Whole Foods, and I just, I was like, I'll be right back.
03:16It's too early for me.
03:17Yeah.
03:17And I come back, and it was like, we have an idea.
03:19It was great.
03:21Cool.
03:22Yeah.
03:22So, down to the bottom happened really fast.
03:24That's cool.
03:25I did this record.
03:26It's just very, like, you know, serendipitous.
03:29You're describing this sound as a little bit more, I don't know, how would you describe
03:34it?
03:34A little more, I don't want to say upbeat, but a little more flowy.
03:37Lighter.
03:38Yeah, lighter, yeah.
03:39Yeah, lighter, yeah.
03:39You know, I don't want to make the same record twice.
03:42Yeah.
03:42And I like when artists evolve.
03:45I think it's brave.
03:47And so, I wanted to evolve, and it was time, so.
03:50But it's still right within the Dorothy wheelhouse, so it's not like you're.
03:54Yeah, it's in there.
03:55Yeah.
03:55Like, we'll always do stuff within the wheelhouse.
03:57Yeah.
03:57Like, you know, we'll have fans that maybe don't listen to the second record, and it's
04:02just not their thing, but most of them are like, I really dig this, you know?
04:05Right.
04:06And then what happens is live, when we play a live show, it's very dynamic.
04:09We can do after midnight and get the, you know, er.
04:13Yeah, exactly, yeah.
04:15No, that's cool.
04:16And then, like, have just, like, a psychedelic trip, which we want people to feel good at
04:20the end of the day.
04:21Well, you got a nice fan base here in Philadelphia.
04:23You've had good experiences, haven't you?
04:25Yeah.
04:26Yeah.
04:26And, in fact, there's a song, I understand, on the album called Philadelphia, but it really
04:29doesn't have to do with Philadelphia.
04:31Oh, shoot.
04:32What does that mean?
04:33I don't know.
04:34Actually.
04:35And here we go.
04:36There was, well, I'm just going to nod.
04:40What?
04:41It's about a guy from Philadelphia.
04:43Okay.
04:43Oh, that's good.
04:44All right.
04:45Okay.
04:45Nothing happened, though.
04:46Is that guy in this room right now?
04:48No.
04:48Is it Preston?
04:50Preston.
04:52Talk later.
04:53Yeah.
04:55Yeah, no, you'd rather not explain?
04:57No, it's fine.
04:58Okay.
04:58Nothing happened.
04:59We were just texting and stuff, and he's cute, and, you know?
05:02All right.
05:02We were in the middle of making the album, so everything, there's me eating pizza.
05:06Yeah, we have a picture of Dorothy at Lorenzo's in front of the MMR banner having one of their
05:12gigantic slices of pizza.
05:14I missed that.
05:15I think I put that coat in the dryer, and it turned into...
05:18Oh, no.
05:18Are you kidding?
05:19Oh, man.
05:20Dude, I've put so many things in dryers that are gone that were part of my wardrobe that
05:24I'm very sad about, and I think that coat, rest in peace.
05:27That could be a song material right there.
05:29Yeah.
05:30Dryer is the next song.
05:31Bad experiences with the dryer.
05:33Put my ex-boyfriend in the dryer.
05:36No, but we were just texting.
05:37That's over.
05:38We were just texting, and bless you.
05:41Yeah.
05:43And, you know, it made for really good content.
05:47Nothing happened, though.
05:49Are you...
05:49Single.
05:51You obviously have to pull off life experiences, but are there...
05:54You know, there's some artists who really just...
05:57You know, I mean, not to say you're Taylor Swift, but Taylor Swift is the model of someone
06:03who appears to go through relationships just to generate new material.
06:06Yeah, right.
06:06Whatever, dude.
06:07Yeah, yeah.
06:07If he screws you over, you're going in a song.
06:10Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:11I agree.
06:12There you go, yeah.
06:12She didn't name anybody.
06:13Yeah, right.
06:14But, you know, when you're that public, it's not hard to, like, connect the dots.
06:17Connect the dots, right.
06:18Yeah, but, you know, all right, so you obviously can write about your life experiences, but
06:22then you can also write about the idea of life experiences, right?
06:28So it might be just sort of an abstract thought, right?
06:32Yeah, hence Philadelphia.
06:33Yeah, there you go.
06:34Well, I think about the Rolling Stones writing a lot of songs about the working man, and when
06:38was the last time those guys had to work a nine-to-five job, you know?
06:41But they wrote songs that were true to what the working man was experiencing, you know,
06:46but they weren't necessarily themselves.
06:48Keith Richards wasn't.
06:49They had a couple of working men come into the studio talking about your day.
06:51They asked him what it was like, yeah.
06:54All kinds of influences.
06:55You never know where they come from.
06:56Yeah, yeah.
06:57True.
06:57Wow.
06:57I was also reading, in personality, you say you are probably most like Steven Tyler.
07:03Do you still believe that?
07:05Dude, I love him.
07:05Yeah.
07:06Like, he's my spirit animal.
07:07We're both Aries.
07:08I feel like I want to channel his energy when I'm on stage.
07:11And actually, last night, someone kind of said, you remind me of Steven Tyler, but a
07:16woman.
07:16Ah!
07:17And I was like, thank you?
07:18Yeah.
07:20In what way?
07:21He doesn't look like him.
07:22No, no.
07:23He doesn't even look like Steven Tyler anymore.
07:25But in attitude, the way he projects, he thinks he's, well, I think we all think he's
07:30kind of like the quintessential rock guy, you know, front man.
07:33He's on fire.
07:34Yeah.
07:34I don't know where his energy comes from, but I listen to Live in Berlin, a record all
07:39the time on my phone, and the vocals, I mean, he's insane.
07:43It's amazing stuff.
07:44So people, they get an opportunity to talk to you, and they want to give you a compliment,
07:49and then they have a few minutes to think about, all right, what is the one thing I'm
07:54going to say to Dorothy?
07:55And you remind me of Steven Tyler, but a girl.
07:58I take it.
07:59Is that the weirdest?
08:00I'm sure you've heard weirder, right?
08:01Uh, actually, someone last night asked me if I was married yet, and I said no, obviously.
08:08See a ring on my finger?
08:09Yeah, yeah.
08:10What woman doesn't love to hear that question, are you married yet?
08:13Yes.
08:14Yes.
08:15Clock's ticking.
08:17I would like to see, we're going to get a couple songs out of you guys.
08:19What would you like to do first, Dorothy?
08:20Pretty When You're High.
08:22All right.
08:22Pretty When You're High.
08:23Dorothy playing the MMRBQ on the 19th on MMR.
08:27Here we go.
08:31Always know where to find you
08:50Getting lost in the cold blue
08:56There ain't no way that could break or define you
09:04When you're breathing a lot of love
09:10Oh, you're pretty when you're high, boy
09:16Laying in the sand getting dirty
09:19Soaking up the sun and feeling fine
09:24You're pretty when you're high, boy
09:30Blowing through the wind on the highway
09:33Fingers running through your golden hair
09:38Oh, yeah
09:39Hold on to me, heartbreaker
09:45You're a lone wolf in the wild
09:52There's a fire burning underneath the starlight
10:00I, why are you stealing this butterfly?
10:06I, you're pretty when you're high, boy
10:13Laying in the sand getting dirty
10:16Soaking up the sun and feeling fine
10:21I, you're pretty when you're high, boy
10:27Blowing through the wind on the highway
10:30Fingers running through your golden hair
10:35Oh, yeah
10:36Oh, yeah
10:38Swimming out to the sunset
10:56There's no way to say goodbye
11:03You're pretty when you're high, boy
11:09Oh, yeah
11:10Oh, yeah
11:14Oh, yeah, yeah
11:16You're pretty when you're high, boy
11:20Laying in the sand getting dirty
11:23Soaking up the sun and feeling fine, yeah
11:28Oh, yeah
11:29You're pretty when you're high, boy
11:34Blowing through the wind on the highway
11:37Fingers running through your golden hair
11:42Oh, yeah
11:43Oh, yeah
11:45Pretty when you're high, boy
11:49Looking pretty fly, boy
11:53Yeah
11:54You're pretty when you're high, boy
11:57Yeah
12:02Amazing
12:03Amazing
12:04Wow
12:04Dorothy on 93.3 WMMR, Everything That Rocks
12:08I'm always, I'm hesitant to bring up other bands
12:13when I hear bands performing their original music
12:16but you can't help but pick some influences out
12:18Oh, yeah
12:19Are you a Black Crows fan?
12:20No
12:21Really?
12:21I mean, not a not fan
12:22but just not, didn't really get into that
12:25Not an influence
12:25Yeah, because I hear that bluesy
12:27I mean, listen, Rock's loaded with blues
12:29Yeah
12:30And that's where the origins are from
12:32But some people do it with a little more, you know
12:34a little more emotion
12:35a little more real gut
12:36and a little traditional feel
12:37and that song definitely has that in it
12:39Thanks
12:40Yeah
12:40One of our favorite interviews
12:42we interviewed Dolly Parton years ago
12:44Oh
12:44Love Dolly Parton
12:45I know you do as well
12:46I love her
12:46And did you start to develop a yodeling skills
12:49because of Dolly Parton?
12:50No, no
12:50That was like when I was six
12:52Okay, yeah
12:53No, I actually learned how to sing through country music
12:56Through country music, yeah
12:57And
12:57And she's phenomenal
12:59She's my mom
13:01Yeah
13:01Like, let's be real
13:03She's my mom
13:03So much
13:04Oh my god
13:04Okay
13:05No, literally
13:07Like, how cool are our fans, too?
13:09I was like
13:09We were in Nashville
13:10And there were these Dolly Parton saint candles
13:13Ah
13:13And they
13:14At a coffee shop
13:15And they wouldn't sell them to me
13:16And I'm like
13:16Well, then don't put them out
13:17Because you're just teasing people
13:18Yeah
13:19Right
13:19And I like
13:20Took a picture
13:20And a fan brought me one
13:21It was so sweet
13:22Oh, that's very cool
13:23Yeah
13:23Have you ever met
13:24Or gotten the chance to
13:26You know
13:26To be in here proximity?
13:28Yes
13:28Okay, what was that like?
13:29It was great
13:29Did your fangirl out?
13:30I was scared
13:31I was shaking
13:32No
13:32No, we talked
13:33You know
13:33We talked about life
13:35And she was very, very kind
13:38And, yeah
13:39You know
13:39How much can I say?
13:42Yeah
13:42Is it out?
13:44Is it out?
13:45What's this?
13:45What?
13:46Is it out?
13:46I did a song with her
13:48Oh!
13:50For a movie
13:51Oh, that's awesome
13:52A movie that Jennifer Aniston produced
13:54And Linda Perry produced the soundtrack
13:56Oh, okay
13:57And get off tour
13:58And I'm exhausted
14:00I don't know what planet I'm on
14:01And the next day
14:03I have a session with Dolly Parton
14:05Yeah
14:05So no big deal
14:06And I'm like
14:07I think I need a Xanax right now
14:10Wow
14:11Like a pulse
14:11Yeah
14:12It was just like
14:14But it was amazing, you know
14:15And then all of a sudden
14:16In the studio
14:17We're together
14:17And we start singing this song
14:19And she's like
14:20Oh, you got a great voice
14:22Oh, man
14:23Wow
14:23She's so awesome
14:25So it's for a movie?
14:27Yeah
14:27And can you indicate what that is yet?
14:29Yeah
14:30She's getting a thumbs up
14:31From a manager here
14:31Dumpling
14:32Dumpling
14:32Dumpling
14:33Dumpling
14:33Dumpling
14:33Dumpling
14:34Dumpling
14:34Dumpling
14:34Dumpling
14:35Dumpling
14:35Apostrophe
14:36Jennifer Aniston's behind it
14:37Dumpling
14:37All right
14:38I think we just got this
14:39It was an honor to work with her
14:40Well, we talk about her all the time
14:41Because if you look like
14:42And I know Rolling Stone
14:44Was very kind to you guys
14:45When you
14:45Rightfully so
14:46When you came on the scene
14:47In the magazine
14:47But in their history of rock and roll
14:50And in her section
14:51The amount of five star albums
14:53And the amount of songs
14:54She's written
14:55And it'd be a shame
14:56If people didn't realize
14:57She's incredible
14:58How amazing she was
14:59She is incredible
15:00What's the name of the song?
15:02Two Doors Down
15:02Okay
15:03Wait a minute
15:04Two Doors Down
15:05We're laughing and drinking
15:07And having a party
15:08Yes
15:09Two Doors Down
15:10They're not aware that I'm round
15:12Yeah, he knows it
15:12Yeah, I know that song
15:13Two Doors Down
15:15Yeah, that's it
15:16Oh, cool
15:16It's a great song
15:17Wow
15:17Good for you
15:18Maybe Preston, you could sing on the next one
15:19Yes, of course
15:20Three, four
15:21Two Doors Down
15:22They're laughing and drinking
15:23And having a party
15:25Yeah, Preston, get it Preston
15:26Two Doors Down
15:27I was not aware that I'm round
15:29I thought you were going to harmonize with me
15:31I don't know
15:31That cost money
15:33I was so off-key
15:34Even Dorothy couldn't hold up
15:35No, I was terrified
15:37But at the same time
15:39Very humbled
15:39Yeah
15:40Amazing
15:40What do you like to compose on?
15:43Guitar or piano?
15:44You know what?
15:46Acoustic guitar
15:47Yeah
15:47I'm not as good as these guys
15:48They're great
15:49Yeah
15:49I had a piano
15:51I moved
15:52I sold it
15:53And sometimes I'll just sing
15:55And just get my phone out
15:56But a lot of the times
15:59It's Linda will sit down with me with a guitar
16:01She's obviously got more knowledge about chords
16:05And song structure than I do
16:07And she'll inspire something
16:09And boom
16:10We'll have the verse
16:11And right away
16:12It's great
16:13Have you ever put something on a phone
16:15And lost it?
16:15Who is it?
16:16Was it from Metallica?
16:17Who lost it?
16:17Yeah, it was Kirk Hammett
16:18Kirk Hammett lost all of this material
16:20Don't put it on your phone
16:22No, what I do is I
16:23Maybe I get the voice memo on my phone
16:26And then I'll just like
16:27Open up GarageBand
16:28Okay
16:29And just live vocals

17:14And now I'm starting to stink
17:18But everybody thinks I'm flawless
17:21Listen to me
17:24I can't be what you want me to
17:28I just came like this
17:32I'm already black and blue
17:35You said you loved me
17:39But you threw my life on the sidewalk
17:42You liked it when I fall and you laughed when I run into the wall
17:49You gave nothing to put my heart out on the table
17:56I wasn't always willing but baby I was always able
18:03Slipping into some kind of feeling
18:13Got me believing
18:16Coming out of all of the darkness
18:27Now that I'm flawless
18:30You said I was the one and you married someone half your age
18:38She's a poopy ex-girlfriend with a plastic face
18:45And you said to never go back to an old place
18:52I bet it's gonna make you sick
18:53I bet it's gonna make you sick
18:55When everybody hears my pain
18:58Yeah, yeah, oh
19:01Slipping into some kind of feeling
19:09Got me believing
