00:00Alright, on the phone right now is a man who's going to be at the Rays game on August 10th
00:06and be performing after the Rays game at Tropicana Field, which is going to be great.
00:09He's absolutely jacked. The ladies love him. Guys want to be him.
00:13It is Riley Green!
00:14Riley Green!
00:16Yeah!
00:17What an intro. How y'all doing?
00:18Doing great, man. It's good to hear your voice.
00:21Yeah, man. It's been a while. How's everything?
00:23Everything is great. We're excited to see you out here and doing this show after the game.
00:28You know, I got to see you at the Philly Stadium hitting some balls
00:32and hitting some balls out of the ballpark as well, my friend. Way to go.
00:37Yeah, I don't know what was going on that day, man.
00:39I mean, I played ball in school, but it's been a decade ago.
00:43So I wasn't surprised as anybody, but now I've got to hit bat practice at every stadium I go to.
00:49So I'm starting to regret that decision a little bit.
00:52I've been icing my ankles and my back. I've got heating pads on the bus now just to make it for a show.
00:57Now, were you using a wood bat or a metal bat?
01:00It was a wood bat.
01:02Really?
01:02That was the surprising part. Yeah, I've hit some college stadiums, you know, when I was on tour with a metal bat.
01:07And, you know, I just wouldn't expect him to hit any out.
01:10And then Bryce Harper came out there and started watching, so I got all jacked up and put a couple in the stands, man.
01:16It was surprising.
01:18Let's say one of these workouts that you've been doing, too, by the way.
01:19I was just going to say it has to do with all the weights you've been lifting.
01:22I mean, bro, you are absolutely sauced right now, for crying out loud.
01:27Well, you know, it's funny how getting older will motivate you.
01:31You know, when I was in my mid-20s and really could eat whatever I wanted to and not really work out and always kind of stayed in shape,
01:37I wasn't nearly as motivated as I am now.
01:40Now I'm 35, and it's not as easy as it used to be, you know.
01:43I agree.
01:44I just turned 39.
01:46How do you get motivated?
01:47Do you have any tricks?
01:49Because we need some help over here.
01:52A lot of caffeine.
01:53A lot of caffeine.
01:55Gotcha.
01:56Well, I did get a trailer with a gym built into it.
02:00Oh, that's nice.
02:01I was on tour this year.
02:02It's the first time I've ever had that, so that is helpful.
02:04Yeah, it's kind of like the Tim McGraw motto.
02:06Just take your gym with you.
02:07Yeah.
02:08Yeah, except if I'm not doing those intense tire flipping group workouts he's doing.
02:12I'm just trying to keep people from stealing my lunch money.
02:14Well, whatever you're doing, it's working.
02:17So, hey, I got a question I want to ask you.
02:20July 4th, you were in London with Morgan Wallen.
02:24You guys were doing a show out there?
02:26That's right.
02:26Yeah, I never thought I'd play in the U.K. on the 4th of July.
02:29Yeah.
02:30That must have been pretty cool, huh?
02:32It was crazy.
02:33Yeah, we played Hyde Park, which is just a legendary venue.
02:36I think there was 50,000 people there.
02:38Wow.
02:39It was a country concert they've ever had in the U.K., and it was, you know,
02:42they knew every word to every song.
02:43It was, it's very, very motivating to go somewhere that far from where you grew up.
02:48You know, I wrote songs about that little town in northeast Alabama,
02:51and they're singing the words all the way across the pond.
02:54So, it was a very cool thing.
02:55My first trip over there.
02:56Yeah, that's very cool.
02:57Ryan, isn't that kind of the thing with European crowds, too?
03:00They know every word, like to album cuts and stuff like that.
03:02Isn't that kind of like what a lot of artists say?
03:05Yeah, well, what I think it is, and it was like this when I went to Canada the first time,
03:09everybody doesn't make that trip and tour there.
03:12So, if you go, I think they make it a point to learn everything and really, you know,
03:16they want to brag about knowing the songs that you don't expect them to know.
03:20You know, so I think they kind of do the homework.
03:22Wow.
03:22So, did anything happen over there?
03:25Were you guys, like, partying hard, or were you guys, like, licking grocery cart handles or something?
03:31Because Morgan came back here, and the first show after that show was Tampa.
03:36He played the first night and then canceled the second night, and now he's sick.
03:41So, what were y'all doing over there?
03:43Well, I actually, other than the show, didn't even see Morgan.
03:49We flew in, and after the show, we flew straight to Calgary for a show.
03:54By the way, I need to get my booking agent a globe so he knows how to route these things together.
04:01You know, I always say the second time I go somewhere, I get to sightsee and hang out and visit.
04:06The first time, we just did so much press stuff, being my first trip over there.
04:10But, yeah, I don't know about Morgan.
04:14We kind of laid low while I was out there.
04:16Nice cover-up, though, anyway.
04:18Well, the new song is Damn Good Day to Leave.
04:21Let's talk about this a little bit.
04:22Kind of give us the concept behind this.
04:24Well, I write a lot of sad songs.
04:26Yes.
04:27You know, people don't want to ride around and cry all day long.
04:29So, I thought, wouldn't it be cool to have a fun breakup song?
04:32You know, and I guess I always loved Brad Paisley, I'm Gonna Miss Her.
04:37He has five, you know, that song has.
04:39And, you know, it's kind of like, I guess it doesn't hurt as bad as she leaves when the fish are biting.
04:43That kind of thing.
04:44And then, the other thing I was going to ask you is, on the EP, you have a song called Jesus Saves.
04:51Does that have to do with the sign, the famous sign that says Jesus Saves?
04:56Well, it does, yeah.
04:58It's a song I wrote about a guy on the side of the road in Nashville that had a sign, cardboard sign that said Jesus Saves on it.
05:05And I just thought about how tough it would be.
05:07We're so quick to judge folks who see like that.
05:09And how tough it would be to try to win over complete strangers riding by with just whatever you could write on a sign.
05:14And, you know, I thought it's a pretty good message that you never really know what somebody's been through.
05:19And, you know, the chorus is kind of talking about some things that are pretty serious and pretty tough things that could really happen to anybody.
05:27And it's been really cool to see the reaction to that song.
05:30A lot of tears during the show when that one comes out, you know.
05:33Yeah, love that, though.
05:35All right, man.
05:36Well, listen, we're excited to see you here August 10th at the Rays game.
05:39They're playing the Orioles, by the way, if you care.
05:41And we'll see a show after the game, and we're excited for it.
05:46Riley, you're always the man.
05:48We appreciate you coming on.
05:49And when I see you next, we'll arm wrestle or something.
05:53All right, let's do it.
05:53Arm wrestle next time I'll see you.
05:55I'm looking forward to the show, and thank you all for taking the time.
05:57I'll see you all in a couple weeks.
05:58All right, Riley.
05:59Talk to you later, buddy.
