00:00all right here in the rift studios we got joey anthony alex josh welcome back to detroit guys
00:10thank you very much you guys are coming back for uh riff fest on september 23rd we'll talk about
00:14that in a few minutes but first i have a question how in 2023 does someone get lost you have to be
00:20pretty dumb to get lost gotta be old if you prefer maps why wait did we get lost is that why you're
00:25i thought you guys got lost okay but we're not driving we have a driver he got lost and prefers
00:30paper maps i don't know how that happened but he did it's so yeah it's so funny i saw a comedian a
00:37few months ago go there are people in this room that have never been lost because they were young
00:40you know and i'm like that's a great point then you guys are like yeah we're gonna be a little bit late
00:44because our driver got lost i'm like how does that even happen nowadays yeah i mean if your phone dies
00:48nowadays you don't leave you don't leave the house yeah your phone's dead you don't leave yeah yeah you
00:54can't even get in touch with your friends because i used to remember everyone's phone number exactly
00:58yeah i still remember my home phone number from when i was a kid same but uh so what you guys got
01:03going on you guys are touring with the incubus how's that going so far is this only a few dates
01:07only a few weeks so far whole month whole month yeah 28 shows yeah but we're we've only been in it
01:13for we've been two weeks there's been i think we just did our ninth or tenth show last night yeah
01:18yeah now you're heading over to uh canada as we record this correct yes yeah over there in uh
01:23that's a great place by the way that's a really cool venue um yeah no it's cool so i'm curious to
01:29know um first of all how the tour is going but paris jackson how is this working what is what does
01:34she do is she like singing and stuff i don't really know exactly what she does she sings and plays
01:38guitar yeah does she really okay she's got a band she's got songs yeah how is she she's great she's
01:43really cool super cool yeah do you guys ask her about her dad or is that like no no i can remember
01:50the day that i you know that he passed away i was actually on the air and i'm like this can't be
01:53right you know and it's like michael jackson you just think one of those guys gonna live forever
01:56you know yeah but no that's that's cool so how the incubus guy is great awesome yeah really really
02:02cool yeah really cool people we had a uh a day off in um where was it oh yes they're they had
02:11this tradition where they get this campground they know the owners of this campground and every
02:14time they tour through the area they they just like rent the whole place and it's river rafting
02:20and drinking and fun and so it was really fun to do that especially like early on on the tour
02:25is that kind of normal for a band to do that with the what the what the bands no yeah i was gonna say
02:31no i just saw Taylor's like very few headliners that are like incubus uh shinedowns like that too
02:38that are just like got us tickets to an amusement park i remember on that tour did they i had an off
02:44day we were in canada actually and there was like outside of toronto there was an amusement park and
02:50i remember their their guy i don't know i don't remember his name but he got us yeah john maybe
02:54somebody he got us a bunch of tickets to go for free yeah it was cool nice gesture yeah that uh
03:00amusement park i was there boy long time ago oh but before i got to this radio station i was at the
03:05amusement park so you guys like doing that kind of stuff on tour yeah it's fun summer tours we always
03:12end up doing something cool yeah yeah they got that new ride at cedar point i don't know how
03:16much time you guys have but it supposedly goes 120 miles an hour and goes 420 feet up the air
03:20i don't have the stomach for that stuff anymore like when i was a kid i used to love it and i
03:26yeah we get enough of the roller coaster experience on our bus right yeah apparently
03:31so tell me about the band what do you guys have going on you guys uh working on some new stuff
03:37what's going on with the band yeah there you go yes yeah we've been working on new stuff for a very
03:44long time and we will continue to until it's ready how long is a long time in your life um
03:52well i mean i mean 33 years you've been working on this record that well no i mean but
03:59it sort of feels like that because i don't think that uh like not every song from from the last record
04:05was written right in that period between the first one and the second one and um you know
04:10there's things that have lingered that we started a long time ago and you know so i it sort of feels
04:15like the first record again and again and again because you're still picking from things that you had
04:21from so long ago yeah i was gonna say it's james hetfield's birthday to say and he told me one time
04:25it's like a riff junkyard you guys kind of go back to that oh yeah stuff out yeah and lyrics to lines
04:31melodies yeah mostly riffs though with stuff like that the junkyard is is is for riffs more than it
04:36is for melodies yeah but we'll do that like we'll take something from forever ago and write something
04:41new and go maybe this is the bridge for that song or maybe this is the chorus for that one and
04:45oftentimes that doesn't work though but we try yeah so have you guys actually laid down any tracks or
04:51how far you into yeah a lot yeah have you really yeah yeah so no date as far as when we could hear
04:57that just kind of just whenever it's ready absolutely not next year whenever that is
05:02it's never that perfect huh coming up soon what does soon mean
05:0720 years do you guys uh i mean when you when you make a record and it's done is it ever really
05:16done for you or is there no no it's the hardest part that's the thing where you guys just cut the
05:21chord at one point yeah i've found that like getting a song to 75 is the easiest part maybe
05:31even 80 like getting it super close we're like this is great and it's almost done and then going from
05:37that 75 80 90 to 100 is like it's it's the steepest uphill climb and and when you guys have uh you know
05:46your your music and stuff i mean it's yours and then the day that you release it becomes everybody's
05:52what's that feeling like it's bittersweet yeah yeah it's good and bad it's weird to be judged
05:59for something that feels very personal and close to you like it's weird when it gets it almost feels
06:06like even though there's a release date it feels like it's leaked and it's out of your hands and
06:10there's nothing you can do about it there's nothing you can say about it you can't like
06:12i don't know you can't defend it well even you just have to let people say their piece even just
06:18having one other person outside the bubble listen to it is a little yeah it's true anxiety there too
06:25we keep our stuff pretty close to the chest and our our team hates that but yeah speaking of
06:31defending it here in 2023 it's like one of those things like you know i know wolfgang van halen likes
06:36to go after people online and stuff like they're talking about defending it uh do you read the comments
06:40in the social media sphere yeah all of them yeah do you really yeah yeah it sucks i shouldn't yeah
06:47but there's got to be a bunch of good ones on there too yeah there usually is it's usually mostly good
06:52but then that one bad one pops out that's the one you kind of focus and then i stop sleeping yeah yeah
06:56is that right yeah well like but like you said you can't please everybody all the time you got to
07:01please yourself first i suppose i'm gonna try yeah and when you guys are writing stuff do you ever think
07:06the fans are gonna love this hate this whatever i mean zacky vengeance just told me about their new
07:10record he goes people are gonna love this and people are gonna hate this yeah and that's that's always
07:14been our approach to this too is like accepting that we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna lose some
07:21fans possibly on you know with certain topics certain songs whatever and we're gonna gain some
07:25it just for some reason it gets like harder and harder to detach from the fan base that we've built
07:31for me at least it was easier early on i don't know why but now it's now it's like it's hard not
07:37to see literally see the faces of the people who we've been seeing at shows forever when we're
07:41writing something like what is that how is their face going to change when they hear this like what
07:45how are they going to react to this and uh it sucks i wish i wish there was a way to get them out
07:52of our minds but because then it's like you're not writing from a genuine place if you're thinking
07:58about the people you're trying to please with it right but it's a it's it's tough it's a battle
08:02yeah that's the thing right yeah it is a battle i'm sure because it's always going to be in the
08:05back of your mind regardless yeah yeah who uh you talked about topics so who picks the topics and
08:11what if there's a topic that one of the other guys isn't crazy about that's that's god god does that for
08:16us uh no we don't pick a topic it just happens yeah it's whatever like naturally comes out
08:22gotcha well it's cool to see you guys uh riff fest coming up on uh september 23rd anything
08:28else you want to plug you have anything going on any crazy stories you can tell us
08:32we got lost on the way here that's pretty crazy yeah we got lost on the way here we got lost the
08:40other day google didn't help i didn't have a phone it was terrible i couldn't pull into the campground
08:45let's start heading to riff fest now yeah right uh by the way speaking of festivals uh i did you guys
08:51did play sonic temple correct yes yeah i didn't go this year how was that awesome queens of the
08:56stone age played oh yeah it was their first show in five years yeah and we got to be side stage
09:01they're actually playing tonight for the start of their tour right here you guys should you know
09:05really i'd love to go see it i think we're kind of around we're being we're going to canada
09:10we're going to windsor a couple miles away but you don't have to go like right now do you i think
09:14oh do you yeah crossing the border after this well yeah they're playing right 20 minutes away
09:21so we can't cross and come back over i don't want to i don't want to cross twice
09:25yeah but yeah and the work visa and the whole thing yeah how do they all go to the border with
09:30all your stuff i mean you know you guys yeah you guys get stopped well yeah the tour manager deals
09:34with all the headache paperwork yeah but oftentimes we cross the border at like 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. like
09:39it happens frequently on tours and everybody has to get out of the bus and walk in and tell a
09:44person here's my passport yeah i'm with this group smooth yeah then they open up your uh they open up
09:50your trailer too only if they i don't know what we don't know what they're doing because they
09:54get us all out of the bus and then we don't know the one time we crossed they had they had the bus
10:00pull into that it was like a like a hanger and it x-rayed the bus oh yeah we were off the bus
10:06but they didn't do that last time yeah that was random yeah they made the driver stay on the bus
10:12yeah i i crossed the border on my harley davidson about two weeks ago around this time and it was
10:19like an hour wait really yeah yeah is that what we're in for right now you're probably in mad
10:24oh no why are we crossing now then maybe we will stay for this show
10:28is that one of the is that one i mean what what are some of the things you really hate about touring
10:32besides that uh i mean probably the other 22 hours of the day on on our headline tour when we're just
10:41at like clubs if you get up before the venues open you know you have to find a place to go to the
10:46bathroom oh yeah yeah coffee shop toilet grocery store wherever it's not glamorous yeah then you get
10:53in the venue no toilets terrible too yeah yeah there's a little behind the scenes right there
10:59of what goes on in tour well it's something people take for granted though like when you're in one
11:04place all the time and you like you have your spot that you can't use a bathroom you don't always get
11:08that yeah typically you don't get that yeah because you can't you can't do certain things on the bus
11:13you lose no number no number twos on the bus yeah no you can't just odds no evens
11:20you can do number ones and number threes yeah that's about it yeah you guys um you guys have come
11:26back like we said september 23rd for riff fest you guys played riff fest a couple years ago
11:30and uh man this this show is almost sold out again so it should be a big crowd excited sweet
11:36who else is playing i prevails headlining we got rival songs yeah yeah bad omens nice
