00:00We know the hard work and sacrifice they go through serving our community and keeping us safe.
00:06Let's honor another first responder on 99.5 QYK.
00:12Kristen's on the phone today and we get to honor her husband, John, who is a firefighter in Pinellas County.
00:17Good morning, Kristen. How are you?
00:19Good. How are you doing?
00:19We are doing great. So tell us about John. How long has he been a fire medic?
00:23He has been a firefighter for seven to eight years.
00:25And have you guys been married that entire time?
00:28No, we've only been married for about a year and a half.
00:29So you found yourself a firefighter.
00:31Wow.
00:31I sure did. Firefighter paramedic.
00:34So right when you got into this relationship, he's like, yeah, I have really long hours.
00:38I work for 24 hours and then I get to come home for two days and then I go back to work right away.
00:43So how did that work out?
00:45Well, they're still married, Lana.
00:47It's been a tough one at first. I'm like, oh, you know, this is this is nice.
00:50You know, I get my little me time here and there, but it definitely does get hard.
00:53And sometimes he works more than 24. It's 48 because of overtime or mandate.
00:57Right. Exactly.
00:59Well, what do you think makes him great at his job?
01:02I mean, if you think back, I mean, obviously he's skilled.
01:03He is trained.
01:05But as far as just a person and then being in that line of work, what separates him?
01:10I think it makes him great at it.
01:11He is a very critical thinker and he cares about what he does.
01:14So that makes a huge difference in being in that position and being in that job.
01:18It's a big deal.
01:19I mean, obviously, you're going to take a lot of pride in what you do.
01:21And obviously, you've got to be able to think fast on your feet in situations that he's been put in.
01:24And that's great.
01:25Absolutely.
01:26Now, you know, you talk about how this can be a mentally and physically exhausting job when it comes to him coming home.
01:33I mean, what are some things he likes to do to kind of decompress from things that he might have seen or experienced on the job?
01:40He likes he keeps himself busy.
01:43OK, so me, I would want to come home and sleep, which he does do sometimes.
01:46But he keeps himself busy.
01:48He always has a hobby.
01:50That hobby may change every six months.
01:52Where are we at right now?
01:54What hobby are we at, Kristen?
01:55Right now, he's gotten really big into hunting and archery.
02:00And so he loves shooting his bow and doing all that.
02:03That kind of relieves his energy and relieves his stress.
02:06OK.
02:07But he loves doing that.
02:08And he's always researching things.
02:11If there's anything he wants to learn, by God, he will figure out how to do it.
02:14Oh, I love that.
02:15You know, Kristen, we talk about this all the time and we thank the spouses of these first responders or military members because we know they make sacrifices, obviously.
02:24Where do you find your role in being there for him when he is trying to decompress or when he does come home from a tough day on the job where maybe he's seen something that really has affected him?
02:34I try to just let him do what he wants to do, even though I know he's exhausted.
02:39If he wants to be out in the garage for six hours, I let him do his thing.
02:43When it comes to dinner, I'm like, all right, come on, you got to get inside, you got to eat.
02:46You know, and it's amazing, too, because a lot of times, you know, your husband comes home and he's worked for 48 hours and he'll come home in a great mood.
02:54I mean, somehow these guys are trained to leave that, what they saw and what they went through at work and then walk through the door with a smile on their face.
03:03And I think that that takes a big person to do something like that.
03:07It really does.
03:07And there's days I don't know how he does it because there's days I've had rough days at work and I just want to come home and sleep or cry.
03:13He's not doing none of that.
03:15So when he's not working, what are some things you guys like to do together?
03:19We have a boat, so we like to go fishing.
03:21OK.
03:21So we're doing offshore fishing.
03:23We also are both scuba certified.
03:25Nice.
03:26So we like to try and plan vacations around scuba diving and hiking is a big thing.
03:31So I am the planner.
03:33Well, maybe we can help with some of that planning.
03:35We want to give John and also yourself $200 in Visa gift cards.
03:39Thanks to our friends at Crown Buick GMC and Demesman and Dover Law Firm.
03:43Just something you guys can go do something for fun.
03:44Maybe you need something for fishing or maybe you just want to go have a great meal together.
03:47Whatever it is, it's a small way for us to say thank you so much for what he does on a daily basis.
03:53And for what you do on a daily basis as well.
03:55Well, thank you very much.
03:56And we both are going to greatly appreciate that.
03:57It's definitely going to be used to decompress.
03:59Love hearing that.
04:00Hey, and we love hearing those stories.
04:01We want to hear from you.
