Transkrip
00:00:00Tony, you were here when Casey Spurlock won the Winter Nationals in his first professional start.
00:00:04Spencer Hyde's trying to live that life today.
00:00:08Let's go down to the starting line as we have Dan Wilkerson and Paul Lee getting ready to heat the tires.
00:00:18Paul Lee, very short burn up there.
00:00:20The McLeod clutches FTI Performance, Silver Sport Transmission, Dodge, Skagg, Mustang backing up.
00:00:25Playin' HRA, been rockin' and rollin' all season long.
00:00:28A couple of big, long odds payouts so far in terms of Paul Lee and Chad Green.
00:00:32You can hit the flow code or go to playin'hra.com to check the odds each week on the upcoming race for the weekend.
00:00:39The odds do get adjusted through qualifying.
00:00:41So a bet you place before the race at 27.25 for Chad Green actually would have gotten better if you bet him after qualifying at 28.85.
00:00:52Entering Phoenix for Paul Lee, 17.55.
00:00:54These are long odds.
00:00:56People got paid.
00:00:56They're long odds, and they're the first two winners in this area, and they're still here.
00:01:00That's the best news.
00:01:01Yes.
00:01:02So playin'hra.com is where you can check the odds each and every week.
00:01:06There's some prop bets and all kinds of cool stuff in there.
00:01:08Number one qualifier and race winners.
00:01:10Body's coming down now as the ball lead moves ahead.
00:01:13Low 18 top speed in the first round.
00:01:18Running to surprise by it anymore.
00:01:19We're expecting this stuff out of this car.
00:01:21Yeah, and it just seems like they're really starting to wrap their heads around how this car needs to be tuned in these changing conditions.
00:01:28Well, he smokes the tires.
00:01:42You've got to be kidding me.
00:01:44Dan Wilkerson runs a 393 at 330 miles an hour, and the funny day and funny car continues.
00:01:50Well, these cars, at times, they could be very temperamental when they lose traction at the starting line.
00:01:55It leaves the crew chief scratching his head for Johnny Lindbergh, who Paul had suggested was very aggressive, maybe too aggressive on the starting line.
00:02:04If the initial wheel speed is too excessive, it is not going to recover that early in the run.
00:02:08Spencer Hyde and Dan Wilkerson will race each other in the next round.
00:02:12Dan Wilkerson has been to one final.
00:02:14Spencer Hyde's with Bruno.
00:02:15He's been to none.
00:02:16Spencer Hyde is living the California dream right now.
00:02:21You were quick and fast first round.
00:02:22Second round, you were quick enough.
00:02:24What went wrong in that round?
00:02:25When did it let go?
00:02:26I just smoked the tire out there about the eighth mile.
00:02:29It was good enough to get it done.
00:02:30Obviously, crews had issues.
00:02:33You know, we're finally building some confidence.
00:02:34We're getting there slowly, and it's great.
00:02:37My guys turned that car around in about 40 minutes, and they were confident going up there, and so was I.
00:02:42So I'm happy Jim chose to wait for crews.
00:02:45Didn't want to go on a single.
00:02:47So here, we're going to go to the semifinals, see what we can do.
00:02:51A straight-up guy in a heads-up race, and he is going to face off against Dan Wilkerson next round.
00:02:56Jack Beckman and Chad Green.
00:02:58Things have not exactly worked out the way we would have expected so far this round,
00:03:02and for Jack Beckman, he was this guy we've been looking at as almost unstoppable.
00:03:06He was the second quick in the first round, but they were able to manage their power pretty well,
00:03:12and you almost have to think that even with the things that we've seen unfold,
00:03:17I mean, this team is still a better, more consistent, slightly quicker car than Austin Cross.
00:03:22And Beckman will make no mistakes out there.
00:03:31A 385.9 at 331 miles per hour, as Chad Green and Gru ran a clean 390,
00:03:38but that was no match for what was up against them.
00:03:41And any time you can get a jump, close to 300th of a second, jump off of Chad Green,
00:03:46it's going to look worse than it actually was.
00:03:48He was 400th quicker at 660 feet, 2 mile an hour faster for Beckman, 286 to 331 at the finish line,
00:03:56but it looked a lot like what they did in the first round.
00:03:59It was just so clean, accelerated so good, and no piston smoke.
00:04:03His car just seems to be working very well right now.
00:04:06It is on lock. Dan Wilkerson is with Bruno Massel.
00:04:11Again, Daniel Wilkerson, you always know what the guy is thinking
00:04:13because he's screaming and yelling when he gets out of that car.
00:04:15I know you're having fun driving a funny car. Tell me about that run.
00:04:18I guess I haven't gone fast for a while because I told them I thought I went 82, not 92.
00:04:22I had to run one and a half, so sorry, Tim, I may have beat Adeline Twist,
00:04:25but, man, we're having a blast out here now.
00:04:28These guys are so hard, and I just feel so bad last week when I blew the whole deal.
00:04:32And to get a couple rounds in for these guys, it's really great. I'm loving it.
00:04:37Back to the starting line as Dan runs to the tow vehicle.
00:04:40Matt Haig in the Johnson's Horsepower Garage Dodge at the top of your screen in flat black.
00:04:45And at the bottom of your screen in that brilliant green is the Scheffler Dodge.
00:04:49We're in the Pronto Auto Service Center colors and Bonco colors of Blake Alexander.
00:04:53At times, this weekend has been a high-key fiasco for these guys,
00:04:56but as the good teams do, they keep pressing forward.
00:05:00You look at the field. You look at the caps out with Tasca not qualifying,
00:05:04with Austin Prock out. I mean, Beckman seems to be the car,
00:05:07but, you know, it's wide open, and right now for Matt Haigin,
00:05:11I mean, the opportunity, it seems like this race is theirs to lose.
00:05:15As we look down, we can see there that Mike Knutson, the crew chief for Matt Haigin,
00:05:20strides away from the Dodge.
00:05:22Haigin is running, and he's running hard and fast to the finish line stripe.
00:05:35Haigin, a 394-0 beats a 394-4, 35 thousandths at the stripe.
00:05:41That was as tight as we've seen all day.
00:05:43Well, this is good news, bad news for Blake Alexander.
00:05:46Good news is you now have a car that will perform.
00:05:49You don't have to worry about a 4-flat or 4-0-1.
00:05:51This is a very respectable showing.
00:05:54Everything that this team has gone through over the course of the weekend,
00:05:57the thrash that they had last week, they made progress.
00:06:00They put up a very respectable fight.
00:06:02And the reward is that the next time they roll this car out
00:06:05in one week at the Vegas 4-wide, you know,
00:06:08the competition's going to know that this guy is,
00:06:10you're not going to be able to take him lightly.
00:06:12But for Matt Haigin, it's the starting line advantage
00:06:14that he was able to gain that padded this victory.
00:06:16For the next round, you can see there was a flickering cylinder
00:06:20or a misfiring cylinder for Haigin late in that run.
00:06:22And they're going to need all eight to take on Jack Beckman
00:06:25in the semifinal round.
00:06:26Beckman's car, unequivocally and indisputably,
00:06:29the class of the field right now.
00:06:31But for Tim, Dan Wilkerson and Spencer Hyde.
00:06:33Wilkerson has been to one final.
00:06:35It was a 4-wide race, never a 2-wide final.
00:06:37And Spencer Hyde, this is his first professional start.
00:06:39The Hyde crew is going through it on the head contractor's car.
00:06:43Well, the first thing to start to address are all those fuel lines.
00:06:48You can see how big they are, dash 10, dash 12.
00:06:50He's going to cap them up.
00:06:51You don't want any debris.
00:06:52You have a clutch specialist.
00:06:54He has those high-temperature gloves on there.
00:06:56You're going to remove that bell housing.
00:06:58A lot of temperature in that area in particular.
00:07:01There's going to be an assistant that's going to work with them.
00:07:03So they're going to take this supercharger off.
00:07:05They're then going to remove the cylinder heads.
00:07:07The intake manifold is going to come with it.
00:07:09But everyone is doing, is playing a role in the disassembly of this car.
00:07:13Meanwhile, there's someone on the bottom of the car that's removing the oil pan.
00:07:17And he is going to disconnect, or rather, remove the main caps, the rod caps.
00:07:22He's going to inspect everything.
00:07:23If there's anything that doesn't look right, he's going to yell at the crew chief and say,
00:07:28we need to swap out engines.
00:07:29But if everything looks right, it did appear to be a good run.
00:07:32They're going to keep that same engine in that car and just service it.
00:07:35When we come back, more on that big supercharger atop the engine and more of this shock and awe campaign in Pomona.
00:07:45This week's Peak Did You Know takes us back to the 1975 Winter Nationals.
00:07:49And what made this race so special, other than the fact that the cars were totally awesome,
00:07:53was the fact that the winners of the professional categories represent drivers and racers
00:07:58that were in the pinnacle of 1970s drag racing success.
00:08:01Bob Glidden, some guy named Don Prudhomme in this Monza funny car, which destroyed everybody that year,
00:08:07including the green elephant on the opposite side of the racetrack here with the parachute out.
00:08:12You can see Snake climbing out of the car, pulling his helmet and breathers off.
00:08:15So it was Glidden, Prudhomme, and then a man named Don Garland.
00:08:19Wow, look at the car.
00:08:20They're burning the fuel.
00:08:21They were doing dry hops.
00:08:22They were revving the car up.
00:08:25There's a good chance, 1975.
00:08:26I may have been in the grandstands about 10 years old.
00:08:29I think I spotted you this summer, about 1,000 feet.
00:08:31A handshake among legends.
00:08:32Now let's go to the top end.
00:08:34Bruno is with Matt Hagen.
00:08:37Well, Matt Hagen advances the semifinals, and he's got a daunting opponent coming at him.
00:08:41And Jack Beckman, they have a big performance advantage over you guys right now, based on paper.
00:08:46Was there all you had in that run?
00:08:48No, we just wanted to go down and make sure we got to the next round.
00:08:50I mean, Blake, he does great, man.
00:08:52You know, you just can't give it up out there, you know.
00:08:54So hopefully we'll turn the screws open and let this thing eat.
00:08:58But Thomas Brown, it didn't get on the interview last time.
00:09:01His mom passed last night, and he's out here pushing through it.
00:09:04So bless him and his family, and we'll get this Johnson Horsepower Garage turned around and into the next round.
00:09:09So Jason Johnson's here, so we love you, brother.
00:09:13Jason Johnson, the Johnson of Johnson's Horsepower Garage, as we get a look hovering over the pit area
00:09:18where this fairplex becomes a drag racing city-state every year for the Lucas Oil NHRA Winter Nationals.
00:09:23It is a killer place with great history, as you just saw.
00:09:27And we need to talk a little bit about the mechanical side of things here.
00:09:30Of course, the supercharger on top of a top-fueled dragster engine is a unique piece of horsepower-adding equipment.
00:09:36Another guy that knows how to move a bunch of air, Freiberger.
00:09:39He's going to tell us all about it.
00:09:40You know, when we're talking about top-fueled dragsters and funny cars, or even the blown alcohol cars,
00:09:46you'll hear us talk about superchargers or blowers.
00:09:49But what are they, and what do they do?
00:09:51Basically, they cram air into the engine so that you can burn more fuel and make more power.
00:09:56What's interesting is the blowers used in this class are called Roots superchargers.
00:10:01They were actually invented in the 1880s by the Roots brothers.
00:10:04They used them to do things like stoke fires or clear fumes out of mines.
00:10:08But GMC, on their two-stroke diesels, added a blower on the side to evacuate exhaust and bring in fuel.
00:10:15And there was a racer named Barney Navarro, who was racing the dry legs in the 40s,
00:10:19who figured out that you could put the Roots supercharger on top of the engine to draw more fuel and make more power.
00:10:25And the superchargers that are used today are a derivative of that GMC supercharger off of a diesel.
00:10:32And there you have it.
00:10:33A great piece of history there for Freiberger.
00:10:36We're in the Tony Stewart pit area.
00:10:37You can see the engine going back together, those beautifully clean cylinder heads on top of the block.
00:10:42Yeah, and they're going to cycle through the cylinder heads.
00:10:44And the reason for that is whether they need it or not, the intake, the exhaust valve,
00:10:49they're either Inconel, which is a very high-grade steel, or titanium.
00:10:53They're subjected to so much heat and temperature, it'll tend to stretch them.
00:10:56It bends them.
00:10:57So they don't really have time to check all that.
00:10:59They're going to have a fresh set of cylinder heads that they're going to put on there.
00:11:02They always want to have fresh valve springs so that they can maintain a certain amount of tension for mostly the exhaust.
00:11:10They're subjected to so much pressure.
00:11:11And as you can see, based on everything that Freiberger just talked about, that air pump is not on that engine yet.
00:11:18And so for this team, their work is continuing.
00:11:21For a man named Jack Beckman, his team has been on lock.
00:11:24The GovX pit cam showing a very serene scene here as his team gets the work done.
00:11:29Tony, we talk about a guy having a good race day.
00:11:31This one goes far beyond that for Beckman as we look back at the first round.
00:11:35Well, it's been a good weekend for Jack Beckman.
00:11:38We've seen different cars at different times.
00:11:40First, it was Ron Capps on Friday.
00:11:42Then on Saturday, it seemed to be his teammate.
00:11:44But steady and quick and fast.
00:11:47Every time this car goes down the track, it's been Jack Beckman.
00:11:50Then we go to round two.
00:11:51Chad Green was the latest victim of the peak performance.
00:11:55John Forrest Racing's Chevrolet Camaro took care of business.
00:11:58A 385 best run of the round out there, beating Chad Green.
00:12:02Jordan Vandegraaff has made his way to the peak performance pits.
00:12:07If you are an NHRA fan and you are watching at home and you are a veteran,
00:12:12please come to a race and come get this GovX coin for veterans.
00:12:17And speaking of veterans, we have Jack Beckman.
00:12:19Jack, you told me this morning, funny car win 300 for John Forrest Racing is on your mind.
00:12:24You're the only one left now.
00:12:25Can you do it?
00:12:26Yeah, I mean, the peak squad's been making it look easy.
00:12:29And when things are going well, they always look easy.
00:12:32And on that run, on the burnout, we have a mechanical stop to limit the RPM.
00:12:36Maybe new supercharger or different overdrive.
00:12:38It went too high, so I shortened the burnout.
00:12:40Backed up, the car wouldn't go into forward gear.
00:12:43Tim Fabrizzi, our Marine, watched it, listened to it, rocked the car, it popped right in.
00:12:48Then you go up there and it looks like business as usual.
00:12:50And that's why having a great team on our Chevy SS makes it look easy out there.
00:12:54Yep.
00:12:57They are still working on the car.
00:12:59You can see Eric there in the back, packing the parachutes.
00:13:02Multitude of guys slinging engine parts.
00:13:04A new set of cylinder liners will go into that billet aluminum block.
00:13:07Those are steel, of course, and that's what the piston rides up on, up and down inside of as the engine's running.
00:13:12We go back across the pit area as the cylinder head's being torqued down on Tony Stewart's top fuel dragster.
00:13:19And, again, it's an efficient process.
00:13:20It's not done with any sort of panic unless, as you saw on Cruz Petragon's car, the work is being done in the staging lights.
00:13:26Yeah, the very specific sequence in which they tighten the cylinder head, the torque get down.
00:13:32And one of the last things that you torque are those inner cylinder head bolts that he's torquing right now.
00:13:38And so as the nitro cylinder heads get torqued down, we take a peek into the Pro Stock pit area.
00:13:45Matt Hartford, his brother Adam, finishing up the work, which apparently Matt is doing the lion's share of.
00:13:50When we come back, that car will be in the staging lanes.
00:13:52Rounds one and two of Pro Stock on the way.
00:13:54And we are back here at In-N-Out Pomona Dragster.
00:13:59If that right there is Matt Hartford performing the final service, checking the valve springs of his Chevrolet Camaro,
00:14:04a car that was good enough to garner him a number two qualifying position in a Mission Too Fast Too Tasty challenge win this weekend.
00:14:11Tony, let's talk Pro Stock.
00:14:12Originally referred to as the factory hot rod, the Pro Stock car has evolved into a highly technical and precisely tuned race car.
00:14:19Tuners will constantly adjust the chassis, setup, gear ratios, clutch adjustments, different fuel maps,
00:14:25and on an engine that revs up to 10,500 RPM, requiring constant checking and replacing of those valve springs.
00:14:32For the Pro Stock drivers, they run these cars into the rev limiter just ahead of the finish line,
00:14:36and drivers like Dallas Glenn and Greg Anderson have risen to the top this season.
00:14:40But last weekend's finish in Phoenix was anything but normal.
00:14:44They both launched off the starting line.
00:14:46Dallas Glenn went red.
00:14:47Greg Anderson's car shut off inches after moving forward.
00:14:51He still won the race.
00:14:52It was one of the weirdest final rounds in Pro Stock ever.
00:14:56Mentioned a moment ago, Matt Hartford winning the Mission Too Fast Too Tasty challenge this weekend.
00:15:00Tony, he's had the car, and it finally seems like that car has a driver.
00:15:04And he's taken his lumps along the way.
00:15:06You can see Matt Hartford here going up against Greg Anderson.
00:15:09He's been amongst the quickest cars in every session and topping it off with this win.
00:15:14Matt Hartford riding high in Southern California.
00:15:16Bruno Massel's with him.
00:15:20Matt Hartford picked up the win last night in the Mission Foods Too Fast Too Tasty challenge
00:15:23coming off of that number one qualifying effort just a week ago.
00:15:26Matt, things are starting to turn in the right direction.
00:15:28What's the goal for you here today?
00:15:30Really, we need to put this Getrix Camaro, you know, through first round.
00:15:33We've got to win first round to get to the second round.
00:15:35And everybody out here is tough.
00:15:36And, you know, our crew is working real hard.
00:15:38We've got a fast car.
00:15:39We've got decent power.
00:15:40I mean, KB really went to work over the winter, and it shows on the scoreboard.
00:15:43You know, Greg and I both went 49-0, 49-0.
00:15:46He got me a little bit on speed to take the number one spot.
00:15:48But, you know, if we can get through first round, I think we have something for him the rest of the day.
00:15:51Now let's get a look at our Lucas Oil competition ladder and pro stock eliminator.
00:15:57The big one here is a father-son matchup.
00:15:59It's been a while since the Quadra guys raced each other, but we see Latino versus Latino.
00:16:03You don't have to look far for another big one.
00:16:04Dallas Glenn taking on Erica Enders in the first round.
00:16:07And a dark horse in the field, Derek Kramer against Cody Coughlin.
00:16:10First time Enders and Glenn have seen each other in the first round of competition.
00:16:15The Rad Torx System Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro.
00:16:18And the Johnson's Horsepower Garage Melling Performance Camaro of Erica Enders in red.
00:16:24Qualifying was an uphill struggle for Enders.
00:16:26Glenn, fast as he has been.
00:16:28U.S. Air Force side for Glenn.
00:16:31Tony, Erica was very Erica on the starting line.
00:16:340-13, but the thing that is the big problem here for her, not enough power.
00:16:38649 meets a 656.
00:16:41And really, across the board with all of their team cars,
00:16:43we just keep waiting for that team to spring some horsepower.
00:16:47And we've been waiting for over a year now.
00:16:49It was all KV in this one.
00:16:50Eric and Matt Latino, father and son, lined up side by side.
00:16:55For Matt Latino, very young in his pro stock career.
00:16:58The Bear Grill sponsored Camaro.
00:17:00Of course, the Jezzy Global Emissions Systems sponsored car for Eric Latino.
00:17:05Son's closest to us.
00:17:06Dan's across the drag strip.
00:17:08And this is no way to treat your old man.
00:17:11Straps a 400-hole shot on him and then buries him in the first round.
00:17:186-50, 3-6 beats a 6-50.
00:17:21Matt Latino takes it to the house.
00:17:22Well, it looks like Matt had the switch on this one.
00:17:24He might want to take a different turnoff than his dad.
00:17:27At the finish line stripe, we can get a look at it here.
00:17:32Is Matt Latino just running for his life down there like he might have done as a kid when he broke the rules at home?
00:17:37Gets the job done.
00:17:38Bruno, talk to both of them.
00:17:39There is no friendships or father-son relationships when it comes to drag racing because Matt Latino, you just got your first ever victory against your dad and you did it on a whole shot.
00:17:49Are you going to ride him the whole way home about this?
00:17:51I'll give him a break.
00:17:52I kind of messed him up a little bit on the line.
00:17:54He double-balled me.
00:17:54I knew that the only way to beat his car was if it was on the line.
00:17:58He's been faster all weekend.
00:18:00I waited for him to pre-stage.
00:18:01I went bang, bang, double-blink, and 0-18, it was over.
00:18:05Sorry, Dad.
00:18:06Thanks, pal.
00:18:07You're good.
00:18:07It's all good, man.
00:18:08Thanks for the family.
00:18:09No, why not?
00:18:10I need you, too.
00:18:11Listen, this is the first guy in history that's actually owned up the double-balled, and I love it.
00:18:15Eric, Matt, don't quit.
00:18:16Now we look at the Janet Brothers Racing Team car of Greg Stanfield, another of the Elite Motorsports entries,
00:18:22and Corey Reed, Greg Stanfield, clean-shaven, coiffed hair.
00:18:26Corey Reed got a beard that looks like it came straight out of the Wild West.
00:18:34Greg Stanfield, the five-time Superstock champion with 46 green and green 66,
00:18:39but again, straight-out horsepower by a KB Titan engine.
00:18:43Yeah, and the overall weather conditions, the density altitude in particular,
00:18:46which is a combination of the temperature, the barometric pressure, and the humidity,
00:18:49and these pro-stock machines should perform better than they did in qualifying.
00:18:53Matt Hartford had Troy Coughlin, Jr. as a first-round opponent in pro-stock eliminator for Troy Coughlin, Jr.
00:19:00This is really a tough matchup for Hartford historically.
00:19:02He's only one and three against the guy, but he comes in with the higher-performing car.
00:19:07We're in the Getrex colors this weekend as Hartford.
00:19:10Jakes.com, of course, for Troy Coughlin, Jr.
00:19:13as we look down from the drone.
00:19:14Now, this was the biggest starting line advantage we saw somebody have,
00:19:18and look at that, by the eighth mile, it was already over with 648.2.
00:19:22Within 2,000, the track record beats a 655.
00:19:25And there you have it.
00:19:26He was about 300 slower off of the starting line,
00:19:28but made that performance up within the first 150 feet.
00:19:32You'd never see his opponent out the window.
00:19:34The Getrex 8 guard showing nothing but blue skies and wind lights
00:19:37for Matt Hartford advancing on to round two.
00:19:41That's top speed of the weekend for Hartford on that particular run.
00:19:44He didn't even heave the chutes out yet as he got to the finish line.
00:19:48Mason McGehee had all kinds of problems doing his burnout against Greg Anderson.
00:19:51This is the in-car for Anderson.
00:19:53McGehee tried a couple times.
00:19:55It basically seemed to have taken the clutch right out of the race car.
00:19:58Not sure that Anderson was aware of that when he was ready to stage
00:20:00in the HendrickCars.com Camaro.
00:20:02And clearly, Greg Anderson didn't care.
00:20:1013.
00:20:11Didn't need it, but he was 13.
00:20:13Well, he showed some care.
00:20:15All right.
00:20:15It was a smart move for Mason McGehee.
00:20:17Wisely, just stage a car and hope that Greg Anderson just pulls the trigger too early.
00:20:21The quickest run in pro stock history here in Pomona.
00:20:24That is a new track record taking Erica Ender's record away,
00:20:26which stood since 2014 at 648.
00:20:29He dumped it down by 3 thou.
00:20:31This guy has set national records and now track records multiple times this season.
00:20:36Well, again, Greg Anderson, like Matt Hartford,
00:20:38taking advantage of these slightly cooler conditions
00:20:41and blasting a pretty good lapsed time out there.
00:20:44Now let's get a look at round two in pro stock and what it will look like.
00:20:48The ladder shows us Anderson taking on Coughlin, Foster Reed, Hartford Glen, Kramer Latino.
00:20:54These cars are infinitely tunable, but the transmissions are a big concentration.
00:20:58Freiburger's down in the pro stock pits.
00:21:00Let's talk about gear ratios and what they do in a pro stock car.
00:21:04Here's something you might not know about pro stock.
00:21:06They will change the gear ratios in the transmission every single round.
00:21:10They run a Liberty 5 speed and it's one to one in fifth,
00:21:13but every other gear ratio is adjustable.
00:21:16And what they're looking for is a little bit of wheel speed.
00:21:18The tire doesn't want to be completely hooked up.
00:21:21So they'll look at the weather, they'll look at what kind of horsepower they're making,
00:21:25and they will adjust the gear set for wheel speed.
00:21:27And it also affects the RPM that the engine drops between gears
00:21:31and, of course, the engine RPM itself.
00:21:33There's your education on pro stock transmission gearing as we now go into round two.
00:21:39Matt Latino, who slapped his old dad around in the first round,
00:21:43now has Derek Kramer to deal with here.
00:21:44They get biofuel Chevrolet Camaro.
00:21:46Oh, Latino floated his foot on the clutch pedal,
00:21:56and that means that Derek Kramer and his Michael Heiner tuned Chevrolet Camaro
00:22:00is going on to the semifinals.
00:22:026.53.5 at 2.11.
00:22:04A literal rookie mistake for Latino.
00:22:06He didn't have enough foot pressure on the clutch,
00:22:07so when he brought the revs up, it threw his foot off.
00:22:09Yeah, Dad's not going to be happy about that,
00:22:11but Derek Kramer is one of the drivers that we've been talking about
00:22:13over the course of the weekend.
00:22:14And we've seen his performance improve.
00:22:17He qualified very well, and he will find himself in the semifinals.
00:22:20The Permian Innovation Chevrolet Camaro of Brandon Foster
00:22:23and Corey Reed, the J&A service, yet goes striped Camaro.
00:22:30Reed has been systematic in his progress this year in pro stock.
00:22:33He's looked strong.
00:22:37Brandon Foster left so early.
00:22:38He saw tomorrow sunrise.
00:22:40I don't know where he was going, but he was in a hurry to get there.
00:22:42As 651.7 for Corey Reed with a 249 light,
00:22:46as he, too, was wondering where Brandon Foster was trying to get.
00:22:49Oh, for Brandon Foster, that's the best way to get yourself on an early flight,
00:22:53unless you have your own plane.
00:22:55That's going direct to our systems Camaro.
00:22:58It mad hard for the GetTrek Chevrolet Camaro.
00:23:01Rob's towing.
00:23:03Total seal piston rings.
00:23:05Glenn's got 17,000ths.
00:23:08That could be enough.
00:23:09Eighth vial.
00:23:10Glued together.
00:23:12Identical elapsed times.
00:23:13Glenn wins on reaction time only.
00:23:1517,000ths margin of victory.
00:23:17The 650 with a five on both sides, but the better light was Dallas'.
00:23:20Well, for Matt Hartford, improvements.
00:23:22He now has a car that can seem like he can compete with anyone.
00:23:26But in the second round against Dallas Glenn,
00:23:28you must have better than an 040 reaction time.
00:23:31Dallas Glenn did.
00:23:31He's rewarded for it.
00:23:34To give Matt credit where it's due, he's gotten better.
00:23:36Every single elimination round of the last two races, he has whittled it down.
00:23:40So to get to 40, he's going to be trying to get to 20 by the time we get to Vegas.
00:23:44Then there's a couple of legends next to each other.
00:23:46The Skag Power Equipment, Cat's Eye Gold Camaro of Jay Coughlin,
00:23:51and the HendrickCars.com Red, White, Blue Summit Racing Equipment Camaro of Greg Anderson,
00:23:55who just so happened to set the track record for Pro Stock.
00:23:58Hit the place, the first Pro Stock NHRA race was ever held in 1970.
00:24:04And he is going to continue to try to set those records today.
00:24:07649 beats a 654, Anderson advances.
00:24:11Kim Anderson approves as we now go to our competition ladder to see the semifinal pairing.
00:24:17It is Anderson and Corey Reed, the two teammates.
00:24:20Glenn and Kramer on the other side.
00:24:21It is all KB type, and Corey Reed's with Bruno.
00:24:25Corey Reed is going to advance to the semifinals.
00:24:27You know, this is your sophomore season.
00:24:29You've got a year under your belt.
00:24:30How do you feel coming into this year?
00:24:32A lot better.
00:24:32You know, you're kind of working through things right now with getting off the starting line again
00:24:36after going red those few races.
00:24:38You know, in there, you're trying to float the pedal a little bit.
00:24:40But lately, I've just been melting it to the ground, and it's showing 050s, 060s through qualifying and whatnot.
00:24:45That last round, I got a little lucky.
00:24:47It flickered the stage beam, and, you know, he took off.
00:24:49So we'll see.
00:24:51Just try to go 020 this next one and try to work on it, I guess.
00:24:55The car's going to go fast, so we'll be all right.
00:24:57Normally, the guy you'd see as you're climbing a mountain like the Matterhorn.
00:25:01Not necessarily the guy on a Pro Stock car.
00:25:03Corey Reed is letting it flow out there with the beard and the hair.
00:25:07Torque and the intake manifold down, getting ready to rock and roll.
00:25:10That is Spencer Hyde's crew.
00:25:11When we come back, the action continues here at the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip.
00:25:15We're making history at the Winter Nationals.
00:25:17This, the flyover this morning from the Condor Squadron of Van Nuys.
00:25:24These are T-6 Texan airplanes, an R-1340 Wasp, Tony, nine cylinders, 1,344 cubic inches, 600 horsepower of freedom.
00:25:33Play me some Van Halen with Sammy Hagar at the wheel.
00:25:36These babies sounded awesome coming over top of the timing tower at full song this morning.
00:25:41Certainly incredible airplanes.
00:25:42We appreciate the care that is given to them.
00:25:45And the flyover was fantastic.
00:25:47Division Foods autograph session this weekend.
00:25:48They were lined up around the block.
00:25:50They were getting chips, they were getting high-fives, smiles, and autographs from the eight drivers involved in the mission,
00:25:56or the six drivers involved in the Mission Too Fast, Too Tasty Challenge this weekend.
00:26:008-16-6.
00:26:01There was a bunch of them down there.
00:26:02They were signing everything they got put in front of them.
00:26:04Bottom line is this.
00:26:05Fan interaction at the NHRA is absolutely imperative to what we do, and people love it.
00:26:10The Extreme Steel Fabrication Legends Nitro Series.
00:26:13These are old-time style buddy cars.
00:26:15They have small superchargers, small fuel pumps,
00:26:17and they wear nostalgic bodies that park back to drag racing's days of old.
00:26:23Tony, these are cool cars, man.
00:26:24They burn a high percentage of nitro.
00:26:26They have a single magneto, and the drivers have to ship them.
00:26:28Yeah, they really are a throwback, and they almost sound better than the modern-day nitro car
00:26:32because they restrict the amount of fuel they can burn.
00:26:35But they can flow.
00:26:36It's close to a 19, I think a 19-gallon pump.
00:26:39But they burn all of the nitro methane that runs through them.
00:26:41Jeff Moniz gets outrun by Derek Marrera of Hawaii.
00:26:44The nitro junkie car drove around Jeff Moniz.
00:26:49Moniz left the starting line first, and you can see Marrera powering to the finish line.
00:26:54He's got Glenn Micrus up there.
00:26:56Glenn's been tuning nitro cars for a very long time, and he's doing a fine job with that car.
00:27:00Right-hand side of the racetrack.
00:27:01That is Shane Westerfield.
00:27:03Todd Blade in the Billy Dock's own problem-child Camaro.
00:27:06The Bucky Austin-owned Bardall Chevrolet for Westerfield.
00:27:10One of the high-class cars in the Eliminator goes 474-8 at 231.
00:27:14And they will zing some pistons every now and again.
00:27:17They would love more fuel, but that's a restriction.
00:27:19That will keep these cars and maintain the cost, be able to control the cost, as well as the parts consumption.
00:27:25We have been watching these cars for four days, Tony.
00:27:27You had less melted butter on your food the other night than they've had melted pistons over four days.
00:27:31They're going to put out a second shift on the factory as we look back at Tony Stewart's day in top fuel.
00:27:37Stewart began his eliminations day next to Antron Brown.
00:27:41A statistical upset, meaning the number eight, meaning the number seven qualifier.
00:27:44But for Tony Stewart, it was another solid effort.
00:27:47371-3 at 314.
00:27:49Did not overpower the racetrack.
00:27:51Didn't try to blow the scoreboards over.
00:27:52They did a yeoman's work out there and got it done.
00:27:54There have been some quicker cars, but one of the few cars that opted, along with Clay Millican, to keep those side wings on.
00:28:01And for Tony Stewart, he's maintaining the range within two hundredths of a second from what he qualified.
00:28:06He looked over and saw 2023 top fuel champion Doug Coletta disappear into the distance after Doug smoked the tires.
00:28:12And Tony Stewart cruising to a semifinal, 3702, wearing those Renai colors this weekend.
00:28:17And looking all the world like a guy who has the capability of winning the 2025 Lucas Oil NHRA Winter Nationals.
00:28:25Tony Stewart is part of the semifinals, which will be up next when we come back to the 65th running of the Winter Nationals.
00:28:32He's smiling.
00:28:32We'll see how big it is if he can win the semifinals.
00:28:35You're watching the NHRA on FS1.
00:28:37The Lucas Oil NHRA Winter Nationals is sponsored by Lucas Oil, the world leader in high-performance lubricants and problem-solving additives.
00:28:50And by Holley Performance Brands.
00:28:52Not just parts, part of something bigger.
00:28:54This is the top fuel ladder in somewhat sunny Southern California this weekend.
00:29:01As we can see, it has got to be Forrest and Milliken on one side, Stuart Langdon on the other.
00:29:05Brittany Forrest had a lane choice coming into this run.
00:29:08She ran 3.693 seconds in the quarterfinal round of 371 for Clay Milliken.
00:29:14So, you know, Tony, the cars are reasonably even matched.
00:29:18They're within a couple of hundreds.
00:29:19That is what some of the driver of the mighty firebreaker car could actually make up for.
00:29:22Clay is a lot closer than Brittany would like to take.
00:29:25You go back to qualifying.
00:29:27And that last qualifying effort for Clay Milliken really put him in the same category as Brittany Forrest.
00:29:32And he's only been a half a step behind in the first round, in the second round.
00:29:37One of the cars that are keeping those side wings on the car.
00:29:40Is it helping? Is it hurting? We don't know.
00:29:42We do know that there are a few cars that are faster in terms of speed.
00:29:46Brittany Forrest is one of them.
00:29:47Clay Milliken has never made it past the semifinals at this race.
00:29:52It is the home racetrack, of course, of Brittany Forrest.
00:29:56The Monster Energy team makes their last checkout looks on this race car.
00:30:02We have the right trailers onboard camera for Brittany Forrest.
00:30:05The Clay Milliken car wearing the Summit Racing Equipment onboard camera.
00:30:09Parts Plus on the wing.
00:30:10Mighty Firebreaker on the side.
00:30:12Will he make his first Pomona final round?
00:30:14Let's find out.
00:30:15That one did live up to the Milliken.
00:30:19It will be Clay Milliken charging down the racetrack.
00:30:22Milliken drives around the outside of a car that appeared to have shut off for Brittany Forrest.
00:30:26Milliken goes 375 at 324.
00:30:29What a day.
00:30:30What a day for this race.
00:30:31We're going to see a couple of different lead changes here.
00:30:34It was Clay Milliken out of the gate first.
00:30:35But it was Brittany Forrest that made up that performance.
00:30:38Within the first 300 feet, she started to drive around Clay.
00:30:42And then at the end of the track, take a look on the right side of the screen.
00:30:44Something gives.
00:30:45Something breaks with that Monster car.
00:30:48Out of power.
00:30:49And that allowed Clay Milliken to drive around her.
00:30:52So Clay Milliken will advance to his 31st career final round.
00:30:55The first since Dallas of last season.
00:30:58Let's listen to Brittany's car.
00:30:59Yeah, it's odd.
00:31:06It just quit.
00:31:07And it might have been a pressure sensor.
00:31:08It might have been burning a piston earlier in the run and gave up at that point.
00:31:12But as you can see from that onboard, that was just enough for Clay to ease by.
00:31:17What a big moment for this team.
00:31:19An early season final round appearance for Clay Milliken.
00:31:24Sean Langdon and Tony Stewart have heated the tires.
00:31:26The Renai tankless water heater's car.
00:31:29Left-hand side as you look down for the Summit Racing Equipment drone.
00:31:32And, of course, the Paletta Air Careers top-keeled dragster of Doug, or rather of Sean Langdon.
00:31:38Let's talk more about Tony Stewart with Jordan Vandegrift.
00:31:40I ran up into Tony Stewart's lounge before this round.
00:31:43And he looked at me wide-eyed.
00:31:45And said, Jordan, this is the best I've felt in this race car yet.
00:31:51He was so excited at how good he felt.
00:31:53I said, well, how else will he go?
00:31:54He goes, I don't know.
00:31:54When I drive this race car, it just gets to the finish line.
00:31:57Now I can work on my lights and my staging procedures.
00:32:01Guys, if Tony Stewart is feeling more comfortable in this race car, that's a bad sign for the rest of the top wheel field.
00:32:06We're going to find out.
00:32:07Sean Langdon has been more than comfortable in this thing.
00:32:09It has been a barco lounger for him this season.
00:32:11And a barco lounger that has won rounds and taken him to two successive finals.
00:32:15Will it be three?
00:32:16Will it be three?
00:32:21That is the question.
00:32:22Finish line stripe.
00:32:23And Stewart, 372-3 at 330 miles an hour.
00:32:27It is his second career final round.
00:32:30This has been just a bunch of twists and clock turns today.
00:32:33My goodness.
00:32:34Well, if you're a betting man, take a look at the odds for guys like Tony Stewart that are in the final Clay Milliken.
00:32:39You're going to make some money today one way or the other.
00:32:41And the culprit was a misfiring cylinder for Sean Langdon.
00:32:45He was a hundredth of a second better off the starting line.
00:32:48But right there, it's at wide open throttle that the misfire starts.
00:32:52And he still made a good run.
00:32:53But that just takes so much horsepower away from a car.
00:32:57Those seven cylinders were not able to overpower the eight cylinders for Tony Stewart.
00:33:02The last final he made in Sonoma was a hot day.
00:33:04It was a greasy day.
00:33:05This is big power.
00:33:06Let's go down and talk to Clay Milliken.
00:33:08Well, Clay Milliken is advancing to the final round.
00:33:11His first time of the year.
00:33:12Clay, your reaction times have been incredible.
00:33:13You've been 50 every round.
00:33:15I know you excelled as a bracket racer.
00:33:17How much does that play into what you're doing behind the wheel of a top fuel car?
00:33:19You know, I don't even.
00:33:21Yes, I study it and I look at it.
00:33:23But the truth is, this is a team sport.
00:33:25And what happens on that starting line up there sometimes is not measurable because you don't know how somebody stayed.
00:33:29You don't know how their car is set up.
00:33:31All I try to do is be my bracket race self and be consistent for this team because Rick Ware gives us what we need to go to the final round here at Pomona.
00:33:38I love this.
00:33:39Love my job.
00:33:40Love these people.
00:33:41Parts Plus.
00:33:42Mighty Firebreaker.
00:33:43Final round bound, baby.
00:33:47We look at our U.S. Air Force top speeds of the weekend and they have been some boomers.
00:33:52Sean Langdon and Doug Coletta lined up in the too fast, too tasty final round on Saturday.
00:33:56And as you can see across the finish line stripe, the second fastest run in top fuel history recorded by Sean Langdon at 338.68 miles per hour.
00:34:05The rest of our top speeds of the rest of the weekend.
00:34:07The rest of our top speeds of the weekend.
00:34:08The rest of our top speeds of the weekend.
00:34:08The rest of our top speeds of the weekend.
00:34:09Frosted Proc 338.26 and then Matt Hartford at almost 212 miles an hour, which for the fuel injection era of Pro Stock is enormous speed in those cars for the weekend we have had.
00:34:20When we come back, the semi-final round of Nitro Funny Car will be getting things going.
00:34:26Spencer Hyde is trying to make his first career final in his first career race.
00:34:31Stick around.
00:34:38Ford is a big part of the YES program.
00:34:40The Southern California Ford dealers are out here hanging out this weekend displaying their wares, including the cool F-150 Tremor.
00:34:46The Mustang Mach-E was in the booth.
00:34:48A bunch of great cars were there to check out.
00:34:50And, of course, Bob Task is a huge part of the Ford family.
00:34:53A big part of the NHRA YES program, the Youth and Education Services.
00:34:57He speaks on behalf of Ford and their need for technicians going forward.
00:35:00We have Dan Wilkerson on one side.
00:35:03We have Spencer Hyde on the other.
00:35:04This is the Cinderella side of the ladder.
00:35:06The other side is the King Kong side.
00:35:08But for this one, it is somebody trying to make their first career two-wide final.
00:35:12And, man, Dan Wilkerson hopes it's him.
00:35:14Huh, Jordan?
00:35:15He is definitely feeling himself, Brian.
00:35:17When I went into his pit, he said, hey, we don't care who we are racing.
00:35:21We are dialing it in, and we will be fast.
00:35:24He goes, tell Austin Proc to come back out here.
00:35:27I'll even race him, guys.
00:35:28That team is really, really confident.
00:35:30There is a difference between confidence and delusion.
00:35:33Yeah.
00:35:34Yeah, you don't want that smoke.
00:35:41Here we go.
00:35:42It is going to be Dan Wilkerson, his first career two-wide final round with an authoritative 389 and 329.
00:35:57Old man Tim found his mojo at the right moment.
00:35:59He came into this round, the better car, Spencer Hyde, he had to his credit that first round 388.
00:36:05But we'll watch another replay of this, and you can see that head machine on the bottom side of the screen.
00:36:10It leaves along with Dan Wilkerson.
00:36:13He had the slight jump over Hyde, but it was Hyde.
00:36:16Spencer Hyde, his car accelerated at 300 to 400 feet.
00:36:19It looks like it broke something.
00:36:20Not sure if it lost traction, but a 389 that they plugged into this car is going to be very competitive for the final.
00:36:26Combine that with an 059 reaction time, and you have a pretty stout recipe for fun in the final round here in Southern California.
00:36:33So the Skag Power Equipment Jackal makes the corner.
00:36:37Let's talk about the Skag close-cut margins of victory this weekend.
00:36:41And it was the Latino boys, the father-son battle between Matt and Eric here in this first round.
00:36:46And it was Matt on a hole shot taking it to his old man.
00:36:50Latinos, Italian, from Canada.
00:36:53Go figure.
00:36:54You do the math.
00:36:55Glenn Millican and Jasmine Salinas, a margin of victory of just 14,000s.
00:36:59And in the funny car category, it was Beckman defeating Brock at 22,000s tight at the Too Fast, Too Tasty semifinal round on Saturday.
00:37:08As we mentioned, Dan Wilkerson is the type of guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve.
00:37:14And this is Dan Wilkerson coming out of the top of his funny car with a lot of excitement and a little bit of aggression.
00:37:23And now the other side of the semifinal round of funny car.
00:37:26Dan Wilkerson, that glass slipper, is still on his foot in the Cinderella story.
00:37:32But there is nothing pretty about this side.
00:37:36This is big-time power, big-time punch.
00:37:40Matt Hagen left side.
00:37:42Right side is Jack Beckman.
00:37:43Look, Tony, for me, this is kind of a moment for Mike Knutson, Alex Gataway, and Bill Shuler to show us what they really have in the tank for this car.
00:37:50It was a big move they made in the offseason.
00:37:52They're going to have to get in there with the best car in the business right now, which, of course, is Jack Beckman.
00:37:55He has all the information.
00:37:57He has the run book.
00:37:58He's done it before.
00:38:00These are the guys that have an 8-ounce glove.
00:38:02But right now, Matt Hagen, he's a 10th and a 2nd.
00:38:04Now, the track temperature from the second round did increase.
00:38:07It's still cool, though.
00:38:08It's only 65 degrees, so it's very manageable.
00:38:11I noticed the top fuel cars.
00:38:12They played it smart.
00:38:13They played it safe.
00:38:14They pulled the cars back just a little bit.
00:38:17You know, Beckman, it just doesn't seem that they've been pulling the car back.
00:38:20This car seems to go down the track.
00:38:22And, you know, based on the conditions, it's still a mid-380 racetrack.
00:38:25And if you ask me for Matt Hagen to have a chance, that's what they need to target.
00:38:29Jordan, what do you have on Matt?
00:38:30Matt Hagen tells me he's not worried at all about Jack Beckman.
00:38:33Last round, they didn't show their cars against Blake.
00:38:35They knew that was a new team.
00:38:36They just want to get down the racetrack.
00:38:38Here, guys, they have to let their tongue hang out.
00:38:40Wow, look at this.
00:38:49Oh, and he blew it up in the lights.
00:38:50Matt Hagen goes 391, exploding the car.
00:38:53And Beckman wins the round, 386, 328 miles an hour.
00:38:57The tongue was hanging out all right, but not in the way they wanted.
00:39:00Yeah, when you have the tongue hanging out, that is laboring.
00:39:02Now, this could have easily gone a different direction.
00:39:05Matt Hagen, I'm not saying that he was ahead.
00:39:09There's no question about that based off of his starting line reaction time.
00:39:12So it was Beckman that was playing catch-up.
00:39:15But Beckman, it was already 300th of a second quicker right there at 330 feet.
00:39:20But Matt Hagen, because of that starting line advantage,
00:39:22and you can see the explosion right there knocking that supercharger off,
00:39:26but more than likely, whatever was happening with that car started earlier in the run
00:39:31and still made a very good run, only 316 miles an hour.
00:39:34But again, the Beckman horsepower, they didn't ease up very much.
00:39:38The final round will be Jack Beckman and Dan Wilkerson,
00:39:41one man we expected after watching him qualify.
00:39:44The other man has fought and clawed his way through to give himself a shot at a first career victory.
00:39:50Corey Reed's trying to get to that same position.
00:39:52When we come back, it's Pro Stock time.
00:39:53K&N a long time and continuing partner with the NHRA,
00:40:01the official air intake and air filter of NHRA drag racing on display in a big way in the pit area.
00:40:07They've got great bolt-on air systems for the majority,
00:40:09air intake systems for the majority of cars.
00:40:12Even some cool custom fabricated stuff in their line of air cleaners that has existed for decades
00:40:16is known by performance enthusiasts around the world.
00:40:19They provide the air intakes for all of our Pro Stock cars, in fact.
00:40:22Anderson and Reed on one side, Glenn and Kramer on the other.
00:40:25Dallas Glenn, the man who has been so good in Pro Stock this year,
00:40:29and that goes back several years.
00:40:31A decorated sportsman racer, the 2021 NHRA Rookie of the Year,
00:40:35a man from Covington, Washington known as Double O Dallas,
00:40:38and he made it to be just that against Derek Kramer on the starting line.
00:40:41Derek Kramer, as good as we've seen him lately,
00:40:43and it'd be a good time to pick up the pace on the starting line for racing Dallas Glenn.
00:40:53Derek Kramer has not made a final since 2023,
00:40:56and he won't make one here.
00:40:58Kramer's car shakes the tires in low gear,
00:41:01allowing Dallas Glenn to make another final in 2025.
00:41:05It's 6.50 with a 7 at 211 miles an hour.
00:41:08The cream in this class doesn't just rise to the top, it rockets to the top.
00:41:12Yeah, especially when you leave a guy like Dallas Glenn,
00:41:14you let him sit there and bake a little bit,
00:41:16and that 0.17, that was a big difference.
00:41:18Off the starting line, of course, for Derek Kramer,
00:41:20his car instantly went into a tire shake,
00:41:23but for Dallas Glenn, good everywhere on the racetrack and on the starting line.
00:41:28The only question that remains, which one of his teammates will he be racing?
00:41:33A legitimate teammate or the boss?
00:41:35Danny Wilkerson is with Bruno Massel.
00:41:37Dan Wilkerson looks at the E.T. slip and said,
00:41:40I finally left on somebody.
00:41:42Both Wilkerson's did their job there.
00:41:43You left first.
00:41:44Your dad had the good tune-up in the car.
00:41:46How much more is left?
00:41:47As you're heading to your first side-by-side final round in a funny car?
00:41:51Well, we just have to get back and look to see how much is left in her.
00:41:53I knew we'd pick up a tick.
00:41:56Tim Wilkerson's a bad man.
00:41:57We got a good hot rod.
00:41:59We're super proud of all these Skaglionis we got here.
00:42:02Skag, Summit, Ford.
00:42:04We got a lot of people.
00:42:05Henry Ford III is here today.
00:42:06We're trying to impress a lot of people today.
00:42:08I think we can wrap this thing up and really put a cherry on top.
00:42:10And Dan's going to make beat feet back to his tow vehicle.
00:42:15The body going to lift off of Jack Beckman's chassis here as they move that ahead.
00:42:20They're going to go right into the service and prepare this car for a final round.
00:42:24Remember, this is the team that won the NHRA Finals in 2024,
00:42:27and they were trying to go back-to-back,
00:42:29something that is a great accomplishment.
00:42:31And for Jack Beckman, looking to really assert dominance on this early part of the funny car season
00:42:35as we move back to the starting line in Corey Reed.
00:42:38What do you think, Tony?
00:42:40What do you think?
00:42:41Does Corey Reed just have that approach that he can knock off Greg Anderson here?
00:42:45Because no one's been able to do it yet.
00:42:47You've got to give him a shot.
00:42:48You look at Greg Anderson's performance.
00:42:49He's been really running the table with the car's performance,
00:42:52and he's been stepping up to the plate.
00:42:54You have to hope at some point that he's going to lay up a little bit.
00:42:58Maybe, you know, some of these drivers, it's so intense on the starting line,
00:43:00and it requires so much focus that, you know,
00:43:03I've noticed a pattern that some of these drivers spend their money,
00:43:06and then they can pick it up again.
00:43:07But right now, for Corey Reed, he needs a little bit.
00:43:10If he can get a little on the starting line, it's going to make it a lot closer.
00:43:18He did not get a little on the starting line.
00:43:19In fact, he handed Greg an awful lot on the starting line.
00:43:22Final round, number 186 is on the way for Greg Anderson.
00:43:26And stop me if you've heard this before.
00:43:28He has lane choice.
00:43:30Corey Reed reached in his pocket, and he pulled out a change.
00:43:33It was pennies and nickels off the starting line.
00:43:36It was lint.
00:43:36This is what lint did fall out.
00:43:39This is one of the things that Greg Anderson has done so well.
00:43:41And look at his elapsed time.
00:43:43You combine his reaction time with the elapsed time, with the top speed.
00:43:48Dallas Glenn may have his hands full.
00:43:50This is an era of pro stock that is starting to emulate an era of pro stock for the 1980s.
00:43:55The finalists, the same finalists in the last four straight pro stock races starting here last year.
00:44:02And Dallas Glenn's been one of them.
00:44:03This is the third race of 2025, and Dallas Glenn is entering his third final round.
00:44:09Dallas, what do you give the credit to for the success you've had so far?
00:44:12It's definitely the entire KB racing team, KB Titan Racing,
00:44:15because everybody worked their butts off over the offseason.
00:44:19Dave Connolly, Rob Downey doing a great, fantastic job.
00:44:22I've stepped it up a little bit and done a little bit better job today than I was doing during qualifying,
00:44:26but we've got Rad Torque Systems, Summit Racing, DPF Parts Direct here going to another final.
00:44:30We'll just try to keep it going.
00:44:31The GovX pit cam as Dallas Glenn gives a thumbs up.
00:44:35Jack Beckman's team as they've done.
00:44:37Now, you can see kind of the reserves on the side.
00:44:39These are guys from one or the other, the Cornwell team.
00:44:41You can see on their shirts.
00:44:42They're just going to be there, right, Tony, in the event something crazy happens,
00:44:45they can dive in, but otherwise they're just going to observe.
00:44:47Yeah, and that's the smart thing to do.
00:44:48This is one of the many teams that are very efficient, and everyone has a job.
00:44:53They do their job well.
00:44:54The flow is good.
00:44:55They'll only jump in if they see that they're needed,
00:44:58if they can lend a helping hand to speed up the process.
00:45:01But, you know, a lot of times if they just carelessly jump in, they could upset the routine.
00:45:06And I'm sure there's a level of pride, too, where these guys have brought the car this far.
00:45:10They want to do the job on their own.
00:45:11As that work is going on, the piston rack sitting on top of the engine as that set of pistons going to go over to Clay Milliken's pit,
00:45:18the mighty firebreaker parts plus top fuel car, wiping down those cylinder liners.
00:45:22Well, they're going to wipe them down.
00:45:23They're also going to stick a dial indicator.
00:45:25They're going to check for round if they're out of round or if there's any scuffing.
00:45:28And while the engine, the aluminum's block, has some temperature in it, it's much easier to remove that steel liner.
00:45:35But at that stage where they're cleaning them out, it does appear that they've been honed and they're ready for reinstallation of fresh pistons.
00:45:42Clay Milliken's job is simple.
00:45:43Just stop one of the greatest American racing drivers of this century.
00:45:48We'll be right back.
00:45:49We are back here at In-N-Alberta Pomona Drag Strip.
00:45:55Lindsay Snyder Ellenson received the National Dragster All-Star Team Award for this track being voted by the fans of NHRA as the track of the year across the nation.
00:46:05It is a great honor that she was all too happy to receive.
00:46:07Well, she was competing at this weekend's Lucas Oil NHRA Winter Nationals.
00:46:12Tony, this is the Flying Dutchman, her Chevelle Top Sportsman entry.
00:46:15It's a big-inch engine on nitrous, and she goes rounds in this car as she did here.
00:46:19Just the detail in this car is amazing.
00:46:21It's the right year, the dual headlights.
00:46:23And it's amazing when I saw the elapsed time, an 035 reaction time, but the performance was the most stunning thing of this whole watch.
00:46:306.50 with a 9 at 203 miles an hour for Lindsay in that round two victory over Robert Strom in the Mustang.
00:46:36Strom went red.
00:46:37He is a great racer.
00:46:38He's number six finisher in the world last year, but for Lindsay, it was a very solid round win.
00:46:42We dive back into the pits here of the Summit Racing Equipment drone.
00:46:46You can see the big crowd that has gathered around Tony Stewart's pit area as his Renai car is going to the final round this weekend,
00:46:53the second of his career, and his team is completing the necessary service work to get the engine turned around for that final.
00:47:00Now, earlier this week, Tony and Matt had a little bit of fun with In-N-Out and not in a way you might expect.
00:47:05Hi, I'm Tony Stewart, and I'm Matt Hagen, and this is the No Hands Challenge.
00:47:12All right, well, I'm hungry.
00:47:27I want to get this In-N-Out burger in here.
00:47:28Be nice.
00:47:30I was nice.
00:47:30You be nice, too.
00:47:31Okay?
00:47:32All right.
00:47:33Let's do it.
00:47:37Mmm.
00:47:38So good.
00:47:40That's great.
00:47:40Thank you, Leonard, for sponsoring the race.
00:47:44Stewart looked like Popeye, and Matt looks like a human version of the Tyrannosaurus Rex with Tony's arm shoved through there.
00:47:51We're having some fun now, aren't we?
00:47:53As those teams get ready to get the final round set up, let's talk to Tony Stewart.
00:47:59Tony Stewart is headed to the final here in Pomona, and Tony, you have won at the highest level of motorsports.
00:48:06Is today the day you win in NHRA?
00:48:08Man, I hope so.
00:48:09This team's been digging, and this team deserves it.
00:48:12I mean, we fought so hard last year, and the car was like a ping-pong ball left and right.
00:48:17So, you know, they've been busting their ass, and this car has been really consistent since we went to Gainesville.
00:48:22So it's nice that they're finally getting a little bit of reward, and hopefully we can finish this thing off for an eye on all of our partners.
00:48:28Of course, opposite Tony Stewart in that final will be Clay Milligan.
00:48:34The mighty firebreaker colors on the Rick Weir Racing dragster this weekend.
00:48:38Parks Plus always on that car on the wing.
00:48:40The fans are watching his team make the turnaround.
00:48:42The Cinderella story and nitro funny car has to be that of Daniel Wilkerson.
00:48:47Qualifying Tony was a quagmire.
00:48:49They didn't really get down the racetrack nor make the field until the last round.
00:48:53You're looking at some early shutoff and early qualifying attempts here.
00:48:55At very quick conditions, every tuner, everyone knew that.
00:48:59The expectations were very high for Dan Wilkerson, missing it the first three times in dramatic style, getting in on that last qualifying shot.
00:49:06This was the shot that put him in the field.
00:49:08You can see the number 19 next to his name, designating a far outpost from being qualified, and then a 392.4.
00:49:14That's when the whole ship started to turn.
00:49:16Yeah, I mean, they didn't really catch any brakes.
00:49:19They make their own brakes during racing conditions, but they have progressively gotten better preparing for their final round appearance.
00:49:26Paul Lee just won Phoenix a week ago, maybe the most fearsome car on the racetrack, and he overpowered it for Dan Wilkerson.
00:49:33Coming out of the number 10 qualifying position, he goes 393.2.
00:49:36That 393 would set up the most impressive run this car has made all weekend this way.
00:49:42You can see his quick reaction time.
00:49:43That gave him the job, but that 389, just in the nick of time, really setting the stage for this final.
00:49:49Bruno's with him.
00:49:51Down here with the Wilkerson's as you guys went from the outside looking in to now to the final round.
00:49:56You're racing with your dad.
00:49:58You know, I know, can you put into words what it would be like to actually win and hand that trophy to your pops?
00:50:02No, I don't think I can.
00:50:04I mean, this is stuff we talked about at the dinner table when I was nine.
00:50:06You know what I mean?
00:50:07I mean, you almost, you wait so long to do something like this, you almost don't think it's going to come true.
00:50:12But luckily, we got hooked up with Skag Power Equipment, and they made this dream a reality for us.
00:50:18You know, for you as a father, you know, I know these are big moments for you.
00:50:22Put into words for us what it's like racing with your son.
00:50:25Well, like he said, it's a dream come true.
00:50:27We always thought it would be a cool opportunity to do this, and then he got working with Chad being a crew chief and, you know, running off of my system in reality.
00:50:35You know, that car's a double of ours.
00:50:37But we were very excited to do this when Skag gave us the opportunity.
00:50:41And, you know, Dan's doing a great job, and I'm trying just to not screw it up.
00:50:45But I'm very excited about it all.
00:50:46And you know as well as I do, I raced with your dad for a long time.
00:50:49He was a great guy, too.
00:50:50And we really enjoy this racing out here.
00:50:52We're going to have to figure out some way to pull a spark plug wire off that force car.
00:50:55But we're going to get there.
00:50:57Thank you, guys.
00:50:57One of Wilkerson's most stunning victories came at the U.S. Nationals against Ron Capps with a 391-2 in the final.
00:51:03Here is a large crowd around Jack Beckman.
00:51:06You can see some vintage SoCal stuff here happening in that crowd.
00:51:09Some cool old T-shirts and everything else going on.
00:51:11The solid drone looking down from the sky.
00:51:14The final round of the Extreme Steel Legend Nitro Funny Car Series.
00:51:18Derek Marrera left side.
00:51:20And the heavily favorite Shane Westerfield on the right.
00:51:22Derek Marrera decided he was not going to wait for Shane.
00:51:24A 14 reaction time.
00:51:26A 10th of a second head start.
00:51:28And the team based out of Hawaii just won the Winter Nationals.
00:51:31Well, great execution.
00:51:32You're at a disadvantage in terms of performance.
00:51:35You know exactly what to do.
00:51:37And he laid it on.
00:51:38That's close to a 10th of a second advantage off the starting line.
00:51:41Shane Westerfield, the Bardall Camaro almost got him but ran out of room.
00:51:45Congratulations to Derek Marrera, Glenn Micrus, and their entire crew.
00:51:48When we come back, the final rounds of a drag race that has been predictable in pro stock.
00:51:53But chaos everywhere else.
00:52:00The Lucas Oil NHRA Winter Nationals is sponsored by Mission Foods.
00:52:05Make today delicious with Mission Foods.
00:52:06Now that's too fast, too tasty.
00:52:09And by Holley Performance Brands.
00:52:11Not just parts.
00:52:12Part of something bigger.
00:52:15The skies that teased us with sunlight or sunshine only irregularly over the last few days.
00:52:21They were beaming with sunshine this morning as the fans poured into the gates.
00:52:25And now they have grayed up once more.
00:52:27Those vintage T6 Texans flying over the racetrack after the National Anthem was being sung.
00:52:32And the coolest baby stroller ever built was in the pits this weekend at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winter Nationals.
00:52:37It is time for the final rounds.
00:52:39And we begin, of course, with Pro Stock Eliminator in a situation that has blown past Trilogy.
00:52:44This may turn into like the Police Academy series of movies.
00:52:47They made about 20 of those.
00:52:48As we have Dallas Glenn taking on Mr. Champion himself, Greg Anderson.
00:52:55The six-time champion.
00:52:56In 107 career victories, Dallas Glenn has 14.
00:52:59Greg Anderson's 185th career final.
00:53:03Two to one right now favoring Greg Anderson.
00:53:07It is the first time since 1980 two drivers have met in four straight Pro Stock Eliminator finals.
00:53:12Will the result for the final stand or will Dallas Glenn avenge his loss there at the finish line stripe?
00:53:21And it's Greg Anderson again.
00:53:236-47-6 beats a 6-50 with a three.
00:53:27The lights were 27-17.
00:53:29What else do you say about the quality of competition out of this team?
00:53:32Well, you say take it, Greg.
00:53:34You've earned it.
00:53:35You were good enough off the starting line every round.
00:53:38And while Dallas Glenn did get a hundredth of a second jump off the starting line, it wasn't enough.
00:53:43It was really chewed up within the first 100 feet of this racetrack.
00:53:46We'll see the launch from Greg Anderson.
00:53:49He was close to three hundredths of a second quicker at 300 feet.
00:53:53But unless Greg Anderson was late, and that just didn't happen this weekend,
00:53:57he was not going to let this one slip away.
00:54:00Anderson resets a track record he set earlier in the weekend by a thousandth of a second.
00:54:04Counting national records and track records this year,
00:54:06that is the fourth time he has done that.
00:54:08Of course, resetting the national record in Gainesville
00:54:11as we get a look at the starting line reactions.
00:54:14As Greg Anderson celebrates, I should say, at the shutdown area, pumping his fist.
00:54:19He has had some dominating years.
00:54:20And it seemed like at one point those dominating years had passed him,
00:54:23but they clearly have not.
00:54:25He's with Bruno.
00:54:28Greg Anderson has been in three final rounds this year.
00:54:30And this is the first time he actually got the car out of first gear.
00:54:33And when you did, watch out.
00:54:35New track record for you, 647 with the six.
00:54:38And you are holding the Wally as the Winter Nationals winner.
00:54:41Congratulations, Greg.
00:54:41Thank you, Bruno.
00:54:42Yeah, I think we made up for last week.
00:54:43And I apologize for last week.
00:54:45That wasn't much of a final, but that one was.
00:54:46That was pretty cool right there.
00:54:48And we both did the best we could possibly do.
00:54:50It was just a great drag race.
00:54:51So thank the Lord.
00:54:52KB Titan has just absolutely come out of the gate smoking this year.
00:54:55And I hope it can last.
00:54:56I know, obviously, we're not making friends out here,
00:54:59but that's the name of the game.
00:55:00That's what you come out to try to do.
00:55:01So, so far, so good.
00:55:02We're looking good so far.
00:55:03Hendrick Carr's looking good.
00:55:04Summit's looking good.
00:55:05Race Star Wheels looking good.
00:55:06BP Oil.
00:55:07Thank you guys all so much.
00:55:09And Pomona.
00:55:09I love this place, Bruno.
00:55:11Enjoy the celebration.
00:55:12Thank you, buddy.
00:55:13Tony, perhaps a controversial viewpoint,
00:55:14but if you have a lot of friends at the racetrack as a professional drag racer,
00:55:17you're a loser.
00:55:18That's the facts.
00:55:19You don't make friends when you win a lot.
00:55:20And that's what's going on here.
00:55:21Beckman, 35 victories.
00:55:24Dan Wilkerson, zero.
00:55:25This is the first side-by-side final Wilkerson's ever had.
00:55:28He was in one four-wide final.
00:55:31And so this is it for Dan Wilkerson, the Skag Jackal body car,
00:55:36a car that struggled in preseason testing in Bradenton, Florida,
00:55:39a car that scumpled its way through the early races
00:55:41and has really come around.
00:55:43And for this man, Jack Beckman,
00:55:44the peak performance Chevrolet Camaro has been dominant this weekend.
00:55:49Yeah.
00:55:52Beckman's path has been that of a bulldozer,
00:55:55straight ahead and fast and just unstoppable.
00:55:57For Dan Wilkerson, he has threaded his way through a thicket.
00:56:01The last back-to-back, first-time funny car winners, 1999,
00:56:06and look at who they were.
00:56:07Tim Wilkerson, his father,
00:56:09and Phil Burkhardt, a great journeyman funny car driver,
00:56:12in Chicago and Columbus.
00:56:14Tony, is it written in the clouds?
00:56:15Is it written in the stars?
00:56:16Or does Jack have something to say about it?
00:56:17On a day, on a weekend like this, anything can happen.
00:56:20And you have to factor in the first two winners of Nitro Funny Car over the first two races.
00:56:25Jordan Vandegrift has four.
00:56:27Speaking about written in the stars,
00:56:29John Force Racing Funny Car Win 300 is on the line right now,
00:56:34and Jack Beckman has talked about it all day.
00:56:37He told me he wants to do it here in Pomona for John at John's home racetrack.
00:56:43They can all celebrate with him.
00:56:45He stands behind the car with a bunch of people,
00:56:47but the number of people behind Wilkerson's car,
00:56:49the entirety of that Skag Factory team,
00:56:52all the crewmen, all the drivers are gathered to watch
00:56:54and see if their guy can stop this man, Jack Beckman.
00:56:57We knew how good the car was.
00:56:59Statistically, you heard Freiberger earlier in the show,
00:57:01it's been better than Austin Brock's car,
00:57:03and in this moment, he needs it to be better than Dan Wilkerson's.
00:57:14Dan Wilkerson smokes the tires, Beckman's on and off the throttle,
00:57:17and for the 300th time,
00:57:18John Force Racing will celebrate a Nitro Funny Car victory,
00:57:224.015 and 3.02.
00:57:24It was more of an oil painting than it was a masterpiece,
00:57:27but he'll take it.
00:57:28Well, that car has really been on a rail all weekend long,
00:57:31and this is the first time that it's really gotten the tires loose,
00:57:35but fortunately, they have a very experienced driver in the seat.
00:57:38You can see John Force there.
00:57:40He's very excited.
00:57:41Let's not forget, one year ago,
00:57:43that same car, same team, same tuner,
00:57:46different driver was in the winner's circle.
00:57:48Jordan is with John Force,
00:57:49who is celebrating his 300th victory as a team owner.
00:57:53John Force, your 300th win in Funny Car.
00:57:57John Force Racing.
00:57:58John, did you ever imagine this was ever possible?
00:58:02Well, I wished I would have won it,
00:58:03but I wasn't driving.
00:58:05But Beck and Proc and Brittany,
00:58:08they all do a great job.
00:58:10And Robert and myself picked Beckman
00:58:16because we saw what he could do,
00:58:18and we put him in the seat,
00:58:20and boy, he's right in the heat of battle,
00:58:22so I love him,
00:58:23and congratulations, Fast Jack.
00:58:27And congratulations to you, John Force,
00:58:29as Jack Beckman climbs out,
00:58:30one of the most meaningful Wallys
00:58:31he'll ever put in his hand, Tony.
00:58:33Well, the reaction times were good for both drivers,
00:58:35but this ends early.
00:58:37It was Jack Beckman that launched off the starting line.
00:58:40We will get another look at it,
00:58:41but take a look at Daniel Wilkerson
00:58:43as his car goes wide open throttle.
00:58:46You can see the slightest advantage
00:58:48for Jack Beckman off the starting line,
00:58:50but really within the first 50 feet.
00:58:52It's that Skegg car just going up in smoke.
00:58:54You can see it spin the tires,
00:58:55but not long after that,
00:58:57probably at 100 feet,
00:58:59it was Beckman's car that started shaking.
00:59:01He just gave it a quick tap.
00:59:03Now, a driver develops a feel.
00:59:05They know when to stay out of the car,
00:59:07off the throttle for long enough,
00:59:10but in this case, when it's shaking,
00:59:12that quick slap right there,
00:59:13and again, very experienced,
00:59:15not going wide open throttle,
00:59:17starting just to ease into the throttle,
00:59:19allowing the car to settle down,
00:59:21and everything worked to perfection.
00:59:23Bruno Massel, I'm sorry.
00:59:27So I'm preparing for my Jack Beckman interview right now.
00:59:31Jack's obviously excited for many reasons
00:59:32that he won today,
00:59:33but you know what?
00:59:34You're going to get the Wally.
00:59:35You had a great car today.
00:59:36Unfortunately, that's all you're getting today, Jack.
00:59:38You're just not my type.
00:59:39I love you, man.
00:59:40I just didn't want to have to crush you in this moment.
00:59:42Apparently, a guy's got to win a championship for this.
00:59:44So it's about the team, the Peak guys.
00:59:46I thought maybe we could run 380s every run this week,
00:59:49and it didn't happen.
00:59:49The track got way better, shook the tires.
00:59:52It hurt.
00:59:53I'm glad I had loaded up on ibuprofen
00:59:54because of my neck and back
00:59:55because I'm going to have a headache in a little bit,
00:59:57but I was able to get back on it
00:59:58and save one for the team.
01:00:00The sponsors for Peak,
01:00:02all the Cornwall team was over helping us.
01:00:04That's what kind of organization JFR is.
01:00:06For Hedrick cars,
01:00:07obviously the Camaro.
01:00:09I mean, our Chevy SS was flying powers here.
01:00:12This is about John Force.
01:00:14This is Funny Car Win 300 for Team John Force Racing.
01:00:17Nine of us got 143.
01:00:19The boss man got 157.
01:00:20This is number 300.
01:00:22This is a big deal.
01:00:23That is a milestone in drag racing.
01:00:25Congratulations, buddy.
01:00:26Thank you, and I guess we'll rain check that deal.
01:00:29And, of course, that deal is the kiss
01:00:31that Jack wanted to plant on Bruno's face,
01:00:33which Bruno very artfully and respectfully
01:00:35turned down the opportunity.
01:00:37Let's watch again, Tony.
01:00:39That's the driver saving the run right there.
01:00:41They missed.
01:00:42You know, the track temperature once again
01:00:44dropped below 100 degrees.
01:00:46It increased in the second round semifinals.
01:00:49It got to 112, but it cooled off.
01:00:51The track cooled off.
01:00:52The track got tighter,
01:00:53so you don't make the right adjustment,
01:00:55whether it's with the tire pressure,
01:00:56the wheelie bar,
01:00:57the lock-up weight on the clutch,
01:00:59or how the engine revs up.
01:01:00It changes, but fortunately,
01:01:02the driver stepped in,
01:01:03was able to deal with it.
01:01:06And this brings us
01:01:07to the top fuel eliminator final round.
01:01:09Clay Milliken and Tony Stewart.
01:01:12They're an eye tankless water heater car for Stewart.
01:01:15The mighty firebreaker parts plus dragster
01:01:17for Clay Milliken.
01:01:18In this category of auto racing,
01:01:19that is so unique.
01:01:20It is rooted on a foundation
01:01:23of both finesse and fury.
01:01:25And it has taken the better part of a year
01:01:27for his team to really master both ends of this.
01:01:30Who is the favorite here, Tony?
01:01:32Is it Stewart, or is it Milliken
01:01:34because of the much more experience
01:01:35in these tense moments?
01:01:37Well, it all depends.
01:01:37If you base it on the last time
01:01:39they were on the track,
01:01:40it's Tony Stewart by a couple of hundreds
01:01:42of a second.
01:01:42But if you go back to qualifying,
01:01:44it was Clay Milliken in Q4
01:01:46that pounded out that 367.
01:01:49and in the first round,
01:01:50their performance.
01:01:51So right now,
01:01:51with these cooler conditions,
01:01:53I'm almost thinking that the momentum
01:01:54is going to swing by way
01:01:56of Clay Milliken and his tuner.
01:01:58Can Clay Milliken stave off
01:02:00what seems to be an inevitable piece
01:02:01of NHRA drag racing history,
01:02:03or does Tony Stewart capture victory number one?
01:02:08Flames erupt.
01:02:09Stewart smokes the tires.
01:02:10Milliken blows up an engine
01:02:12in a chaotic final round.
01:02:13Clay Milliken,
01:02:14with flames trailing behind his dragster,
01:02:16picks up a Winter Nationals victory.
01:02:18427 at 189.
01:02:20Wild.
01:02:21Well, those are the unpredictable things
01:02:23that happen.
01:02:24The tuners have to get aggressive.
01:02:26They recognize that things have cooled off.
01:02:29They look at Clay Milliken,
01:02:30how he performed in qualifying.
01:02:32This is a look at Tony Stewart,
01:02:33and it just lost traction.
01:02:35I don't know if the car lost power
01:02:37or if Tony just opted not to pursue it.
01:02:39But while he got off the throttle the first time,
01:02:42take a look at those rear tires.
01:02:44They are starting to shake.
01:02:45Now they're losing traction.
01:02:46It's just a friction between the tire
01:02:48and the racetracker,
01:02:49causing all that white smoke to billow off.
01:02:52Now he is trying to chase it.
01:02:53You can see that he opened those throttle blades.
01:02:55Now let's get a look at Clay Milliken.
01:02:57A good start.
01:02:58The slightest advantage for Clay.
01:03:00It looks like he is on his way.
01:03:01Tony Stewart's out of it.
01:03:02He's up in smoke.
01:03:03Here's the problem.
01:03:04Here's the engine damage.
01:03:06It could be over-compressed.
01:03:07There could have been some mechanical issue with the car.
01:03:11However, he had enough momentum,
01:03:13was out of power.
01:03:14Fortunately, that momentum carried him to that finish line.
01:03:18Jordan Vannegren was with Jim Oberhofer.
01:03:19His driver had a 38 reaction time.
01:03:22Jim Oberhofer with the win in Pomona.
01:03:24Jim, interesting final round.
01:03:26Was that what you had in the tune-up?
01:03:29Man, I don't think so,
01:03:30but I tell you what,
01:03:32we had the old proverbial horseshoe up our butt today,
01:03:35and that mighty firebreaker car,
01:03:36Clay Milliken did an awesome job today,
01:03:39and I can't say enough about my team.
01:03:41They work hard,
01:03:42and a bunch of young guys,
01:03:44and they're always positive about everything that goes on,
01:03:47but Clay Milliken,
01:03:48he is the guy that got this win today,
01:03:50and we can't be more thankful to have him drive our race car.
01:03:54He did a great, fantastic job,
01:03:56and Jim weaved his way through that same tough set of circumstances
01:03:59all weekend long,
01:04:00and sure, they ate one up in the final,
01:04:02but they're also going to be eating up a big check here as well,
01:04:04as Clay Milliken has won the Winter Nationals.
01:04:07Let's get one more look at Clay Milliken's run, Tony,
01:04:10and we can kind of see where it went wrong.
01:04:12Well, it always comes down to car and driver,
01:04:14and it was Clay Milliken earlier in the rounds
01:04:17that had to get off and on the throttle,
01:04:19made the adjustments,
01:04:20saved the tuner,
01:04:21and this is a case where the driver was just helpless.
01:04:24The car gave up,
01:04:25but it was enough.
01:04:26As long as he gets across that finish line,
01:04:28the engine damage,
01:04:30they'll forget all about it.
01:04:31It happens.
01:04:32It sure does beat being second to the finish line
01:04:34and having that same engine damage.
01:04:36His eighth career victory in his 31st final round,
01:04:39he can now add the Winter Nationals
01:04:40to his U.S. Nationals victory,
01:04:42and he is with Bruno.
01:04:47Well, Clay Milliken's driving was on point all day long.
01:04:50You received your best for that final 038 on the tree.
01:04:53I mean, I know you are a racer.
01:04:55You're a diehard bracket racer,
01:04:56and that means a lot to you.
01:04:57Obviously, the car didn't perform the way you wanted to,
01:04:59but you're holding that wall,
01:05:00and that's all that matters at the end of the day.
01:05:02Congratulations, Clay.
01:05:03Well, I've got to tell you all right quick.
01:05:04Thank you, Rick Ware.
01:05:05Parks Plus been with me.
01:05:0614 years.
01:05:07Mighty firebreakers on this weekend.
01:05:09But I've got to tell this quick story.
01:05:10Jimmo told me, he said,
01:05:12I've got it loaded up.
01:05:13A couple things are going to happen here.
01:05:15We're going to win.
01:05:16We're going to blow up.
01:05:17And if we lose, we're a footnote in history.
01:05:19Thank goodness we ain't that footnote in history,
01:05:21but Tony Stewart is going to win
01:05:23one of these things very soon.
01:05:25All I know is, we won!
01:05:28We won the Winter Nationals.
01:05:31Congratulations.
01:05:31Thank you.
01:05:34And you can see,
01:05:38as Clay Milliken smiling, holding the Wally,
01:05:41Tony Stewart has that moment of reflection
01:05:42that you've lived through, Tony.
01:05:44Well, there's only so much a driver can do.
01:05:46With these cars, high-powered,
01:05:49sometimes it's 50-50,
01:05:51sometimes it's 60-40,
01:05:52sometimes it's 90% car and 10% the driver.
01:05:55But that is the nature of this business.
01:05:57That's something that Tony Stewart
01:05:58is starting to understand.
01:06:02What an incredible couple of races
01:06:04with a whole lot more to come.
01:06:05The NHRA 4-wide Nationals from Las Vegas
01:06:07are coming Friday, April 11th, 9.30 p.m.
01:06:10for initial qualifying coverage.
01:06:11And then Sunday at 11 a.m. April 13th on FS1,
01:06:14final qualifying coverage
01:06:15with the final rounds coming at 6.30 p.m.
01:06:18April 13th on FS1.
