00:01:26a pilot being a film
00:01:28that is meant to demonstrate
00:01:29to a network what a new series
00:01:32will look like each week
00:01:33this 60 Minutes
00:01:35is today considered
00:01:37something of a television document
00:01:39and some regard it as
00:01:42perhaps as exciting as
00:01:43any Star Trek that's since been filmed
00:01:45when the network saw
00:01:47what you soon will see
00:01:49they rejected it
00:01:50from that day until now
00:01:52the first pilot has never been seen
00:01:54in its original form
00:01:56this Star Trek pilot story
00:01:58is called

00:02:46I had seen science fiction

00:02:48but I'd always thought
00:02:49to myself
00:02:50not enough characterization
00:02:52not enough motivation
00:02:53perhaps I could use this
00:02:56as an excuse
00:02:57to go to those
00:02:58far off planets
00:02:59with little polka dotted
00:03:00people if necessary
00:03:01and be able to talk about
00:03:03love, war, nature
00:03:05God, sex
00:03:06all those things
00:03:08that go to make up
00:03:09the excitement
00:03:09of the human condition
00:03:11and maybe the TV sensors
00:03:13would let it pass
00:03:14because it all seemed
00:03:15so make-believe
00:03:16so instead of a space western
00:03:19I delivered a very different
00:03:21kind of story
00:03:36one which dealt with
00:03:41the strange dangers
00:03:43of illusion
00:03:44the enormous power
00:03:46of imagination
00:03:47with whole worlds
00:03:49that can come from
00:03:50inside people's heads
00:03:52and as if that wasn't enough
00:04:14back in those days
00:04:15before the phrase
00:04:16women's lip
00:04:17was ever heard
00:04:18I put a woman
00:04:19second in command
00:04:20of our starship
00:04:21on top of which
00:04:22my script required
