00:00It's time.
00:00Oh, I feel like Tom Cruise.
00:02We're trying to get Scott his dream motor.
00:05My dream car would massively change my life.
00:07Well, camper, actually.
00:09He would like us to find him a T2 Westphalia.
00:12They are going up in price by the day.
00:14A VW camper, no less.
00:16How on earth are we going to do that? Have you had any thoughts?
00:18I've had thoughts and I've had a couple of sleepless nights.
00:20Forcing us to take on a massive project.
00:23My idea is that we come here, we build it in stages.
00:26So will fortune favour the brave?
00:28And this really could make or break this project.
00:31Or will we stall before we've even started?
00:33But I'm hoping that...
00:35And there is that clutch issue.
00:38Oh, yes!
00:41We've all got a dream car.
00:43For most, it remains out of reach.
00:46I've always said to myself when I was younger
00:48that when I get older, I'll buy one.
00:49But unfortunately, it's just been a dream.
00:51So, I'm taking on the ultimate trading challenge.
00:54Oh, now we're going!
00:56To make motoring dreams come true.
00:58I know you can do it, Mark.
00:59I believe in you.
01:00I'm not Harry Potter.
01:02Here's how.
01:02I meet car lovers who hand over their daily drive.
01:05Where's the petrol flat?
01:06Oh, I think that flew off down the M1 on the way.
01:08And whatever savings they can spare.
01:10About £500.
01:11£500.
01:12Through a series of trades, this is a monumental gamble.
01:16And money-making deals.
01:18I'll offer you £3,000.
01:19Hold out your hand.
01:20I'll trade up.
01:21Yeah, lovely.
01:22Until I've got enough money to buy the car they've always wanted.
01:25I can't express how happy I am.
01:27Stop crying.
01:29I'll draw on years of experience and share my tricks of the trade.
01:33If the weather's like this, I wouldn't get that roof working.
01:36We can sell this for more than double what I paid for it.
01:38Helping me in the workshop is ex-Formula 1 mechanic, Elvis.
01:42It's such an inconvenient place to have to work this.
01:46It won't go forwards.
01:47It only goes backwards.
01:48Yeah.
01:48We've just wasted £2,300 of our money.
01:51The pressure is on.
01:52Oh, that's crazy.
01:53To deliver...
01:54You're taking it.
01:55...that dream car.
01:56I've taken it.
01:57It's amazing.
01:58Right, I'm north of the border, up in Scotland, going to meet a guy called Scott.
02:08Now, Scott is after something that is true to my heart.
02:12He wants a VW camper.
02:14And he wants it for a specific reason.
02:16He wants to tour this fine country and go to the Highlands with his son.
02:21And he wouldn't want to do that.
02:22That's a dream ride for anybody.
02:24The VW camper is probably the most famous motorhome ever.
02:28Scott spent years trying to save for one himself.
02:31But those plans were scuppered after he lost his job.
02:35I had big plans to drive a camper around with my son.
02:38But unemployment was really hard on me.
02:39And that dream now seems further away than ever.
02:42So he's asked Elvis and me to help.
02:44Scott?
02:45How are you doing?
02:46I'm all right.
02:47Nice to see you.
02:48Great to see you too.
02:48Fantastic.
02:49Staring out at that lovely rainbow.
02:51That's brilliant.
02:51What a sight.
02:52There's a pot of gold at the end of that somewhere.
02:54I was hoping.
02:54Now, when I heard about your story, you said that you wanted a VW camper van.
02:59Yes, that is certainly my hope and definitely my dream.
03:01Well, it's my job to try and find you one.
03:03But before I do, fancy a cup of tea?
03:05That would be great.
03:06Thank you very much.
03:07Get out this cold.
03:08Right, so tell us about yourself.
03:09What do you do?
03:10So I work in a bank now.
03:12And that's me just back into work again after about 15 months out.
03:16And I suppose, you know, I had the time to reflect on what I wanted to do during that time.
03:20So one of them was to spend the time with my son.
03:23Nice.
03:23I know you've had this period of unemployment.
03:25Have you ever tried yourself to achieve your dream car?
03:29I have, yes.
03:30So the idea was to, you know, buy an older car, add a little bit of, you know, value to it,
03:37and then just trade up.
03:39I wonder where you got that idea.
03:40Is that a wonder?
03:43And obviously being out of work, you just don't have that disposable income to set aside for your dream.
03:48Life can be tough, especially if you've been out of work for 15 months.
03:52Yes.
03:52How old is your son now?
03:53My son's 14 now.
03:54Right, OK.
03:55What's his name?
03:56Aaron.
03:56Aaron.
03:57Tell me about Aaron and the type of things you do.
03:59We go on a lot of adventures and we would love to just go further afield.
04:02One of the first things would be the North Coast 500, which is a beautiful ride in Scotland, beautiful drive.
04:09And unfortunately you can't do that in a day.
04:11My dream car would allow me to spend overnight.
04:14You need a bed.
04:15Exactly.
04:16We need a place to cook.
04:17And you've chosen a specific kind of vehicle.
04:19You want a Volkswagen camper van.
04:22Why is that?
04:22Yes.
04:23With a Volkswagen camper van, apart from being iconic, just absolutely love them.
04:27The classic V-dub camper actually first rolled off the factory as a humble delivery van.
04:32The transporter in the 1950s.
04:35Other companies were quick to adapt them into motorhomes.
04:38German contractor Westphalia at work added a double door, fold-down furniture and bold pattern upholstery for what became the Westphalia, the most sought-after conversion.
04:48While VW have since released more modern campers, the T1 with a split front windscreen and a T2 with a bay window remain the icons of adventure on the open road.
04:58There's lots of flavours actually of VW camper.
05:00I can go and choose.
05:01I would love a T2 and ideally, if you can at all, get a Westphalia.
05:07Nice, okay, so a T2 Westphalia.
05:09Okay, that makes it a little bit more challenging, but I get that because they are beautifully done inside.
05:14They are really nice.
05:16If I was to pull this off, if I was to get your dream car, what would it mean to you?
05:19It would absolutely mean everything.
05:21I would just love to just wake up and just decide, let's drop everything and go out for that next adventure.
05:26You sound like a lovely guy. I'm really determined to do this for you.
05:30Cheers, mate. Thank you.
05:31A T2 camper with a Westphalia interior can cost anywhere between 25 and 30 grand.
05:38So, I'm just praying Scott's got a decent car to start me off.
05:41Now, please, Scott, please tell me, we're walking towards the Morse Traveller.
05:45Is that the car?
05:46Yes.
05:46Yes! I love it.
05:48Wow, look at it.
05:511968, Morse Traveller 1000.
05:53Oh, yes.
05:54I'm just a third owner from about 1973.
05:57Wow.
05:57Had Woody for a couple of years now.
05:59I'm in shock, honestly.
06:01I thought I'd be walking in the car park and going to some boring little box.
06:06Oh, wow.
06:07I mean, it's just...
06:09Seriously, I'm very happy.
06:12This is a great starting point.
06:13The only thing that can make me happier is you want a VW camper van,
06:18which are so hard to find.
06:20And the prices is crazy,
06:22but you can make me a little bit happier if you tell me you've got this and some money.
06:26So, Mike, how about £4,000 for?
06:28I am so determined to get you what you want.
06:30Thanks, Mike.
06:31It's a pleasure, mate.
06:32It's a pleasure.
06:34I've been thinking about getting a Traveller for a couple of years now,
06:37and as much as I love it,
06:38it was only going to be the first step towards getting the camper.
06:41Unfortunately, that derailed when the work dried up.
06:45I admire the way Scott's tried to trade up from this Traveller,
06:48as well as saving up £4,000.
06:50But the Traveller's worth about £5,000,
06:52whereas campers could cost five times that.
06:54So, after that spell out of work,
06:56he's never going to get his dream car without our help.
06:59I think he's an amazing chap,
07:01and I can't wait to start this journey
07:03and try and find his dream car.
07:05It's going to be tough.
07:06Especially as the prices of campers are rising by the week.
07:09I need the Traveller to run well
07:11so we can make every penny we can.
07:13Now, this car, I reckon, is really good news at the moment
07:16because there's always people looking for a starter classic.
07:21For me, the only problems I can feel,
07:23and the clutch biting point is really tiny,
07:26it needs to just be adjusted up.
07:27So, I think the clever thing to do,
07:29I'll give Elvis a call, let him see this,
07:31and then I think I'll just send it down to him.
07:39Elvis!
07:40Hello, Mike.
07:41How are you getting on up there?
07:42All right, not bad at all.
07:43Met a lovely guy.
07:44He's called Scott,
07:45and he's been out of work,
07:46he's struggled,
07:47and his dream car's getting further and further away,
07:50and that's where we come in.
07:51Go on, what is it?
07:52What's he after?
07:52He would like us to find him a VW camper,
07:55but more importantly,
07:56he would like a T2 Westphalia.
07:59Of course he would, yeah.
08:00Wouldn't we all?
08:02Wow, I mean, that is quite a car,
08:05because not only,
08:06I mean, first of all, I love them,
08:07so I'm right with it there,
08:08but they are going up in price by the day.
08:10They start at sort of tens of thousands.
08:13Finding a good one is going to be really tricky, mate.
08:15Look, we have got a really good starting point.
08:17Are you ready?
08:18Go on.
08:19Oh, wow!
08:22A Morris Traveller!
08:23They're classic cars, mate.
08:25It's probably riddled with rot and all sorts of trouble.
08:28Actually, you'd be surprised.
08:29It's got barely any marks on it.
08:31On top of that, he's given us a few grand.
08:33It's still some way off a proper, decent VW camper,
08:37but listen, it's not impossible, mate,
08:39but it's definitely going to be a tough one.
08:41Well, I've already thought about
08:43getting us off on the right foot now, today,
08:46because this car here,
08:48I'm going to parcel it up and send it down to you.
08:50And whilst I'm north of the border,
08:52I'm going to hang around up here
08:53because I've got my eye on a couple of deals.
08:55Get that thing sent down to me.
08:56I'll give it a once-over.
08:57All right, see you later.
09:00Goodness me.
09:01I mean, I love a VW camper van.
09:03That is a man after my own heart,
09:05but that's quite a challenge.
09:07Right, let's get this one
09:08and let's get it shipped down south.
09:09With the Traveller off to the workshop,
09:11I'm staying in Scotland
09:12to look at a Jaguar X-Type I've seen online.
09:15I reckon there's a profit in it
09:17simply by moving it south to a bigger market.
09:20There's a little bit of geography at play here.
09:22Remember, I'm up in Scotland,
09:24so I'm buying a car that's cheaper up in Scotland
09:27and I'm taking it down south
09:29where more people and a bigger population means
09:32that I've got more eyeballs looking at the car
09:34because this car has got a really good potential profit in it.
09:42There it is.
09:43It looks like a proper executive car, doesn't it?
09:46You must be Colin.
09:47You must be Mike.
09:48I am, sir.
09:49Lovely to meet you.
09:50Lovely to meet you, Mike.
09:50Thank you very much for letting me see your car.
09:53No, not at all.
09:54It's an absolute pleasure.
09:55So what can you tell me about it?
09:56This was my late father's car.
09:58He's kept it, as you can see, in immaculate condition.
10:01OK, so your late father's car and he left it to you?
10:04He did, yes.
10:05Unfortunately, my father's passed away,
10:07but he's had the car since around 2016, Mike.
10:10Well, I'm sorry to hear that.
10:12And in the time that you've had it,
10:14have you done anything to it?
10:15No.
10:15Car has been regularly serviced.
10:18There we go, Mike.
10:19Full service history in there.
10:20Oh, do you know what?
10:21This is always good for somebody like me.
10:24And only done 53,000 miles.
10:2653,000 miles, yes.
10:28Nice.
10:29Oh, I love it.
10:30It's a proper executive car, isn't it?
10:32With the dark colour on the outside
10:33and that contrast on the inside.
10:36Let's go and have a look at this engine.
10:382.2 litre diesel?
10:39It is.
10:41Oh, wow.
10:42That's as good as you're going to find, isn't it, anywhere?
10:44It is.
10:45Can I take for a drive?
10:46Yes, you most certainly can.
10:49Back at the workshop,
10:51Scott's beautiful Morris traveller has arrived.
10:54There it is.
10:55And my first job will be looking at that clutch biting point problem
10:58that Mike spotted on his test drive.
11:00Yeah, you're good.
11:04Nice one, mate.
11:04Just drop it over there.
11:05That'd be great.
11:06I love this.
11:15Absolutely love it.
11:17Now, I know it's got a clutch issue,
11:18but I'm hoping that actually...
11:20And there is that clutch issue.
11:22Next, I need to shift the traveller for its true value.
11:27I do need 5,500 for it.
11:30Yeah, um...
11:31And we face a reality check.
11:34You know how much a fully finished one of these costs.
11:36There's literally no way we could afford to do that.
11:38We're trying to trade our way to a VW camper van for Scott,
11:50who was recently out of work for over a year.
11:53Owning a camper would massively change my life.
11:56It would allow me to spend more time with my son.
11:59We'll need to make plenty of trades.
12:01So, I'm checking out a Jaguar X-Type I found in Scotland.
12:04Well, what a privilege it is to be driving
12:10Colin's late father's absolutely wonderful X-Type Jaguar.
12:15But, unfortunately, they've got a bad rap
12:17because most people know that this car's built on the Mondeo platform.
12:21And, therefore, a lot of people thought it wasn't a proper Jag.
12:24But those people, they're wrong.
12:28And just listen to it.
12:30That is the sound of a Jaguar.
12:32It's silent inside. It's smooth.
12:35I've got sumptuous lever inside.
12:37I've got a walnut burr dashboard.
12:39A silky smooth gearbox.
12:41I've got 155 horsepower under my right foot.
12:45It's everything the Jaguar should be.
12:47Colin is only asking £2,600.
12:51And nobody will pay him the money.
12:53And that's where I step in.
12:54Because I know if we were to buy this car,
12:57move it geographically down south,
12:59where there's a lot more people,
13:00smarten it up,
13:01I reckon there could be a grand profit in this car for us.
13:05We need to make all the cash we can to get Scott T's camper.
13:13Hi there, Mike.
13:15How was it?
13:16Well,
13:16I think it's fairly obvious that I haven't put it back on your driveway.
13:21I've pointed it in the direction of home because it's wonderful.
13:24If you're still willing to take the £2,600 you're asking for it,
13:28it'd be an honour to buy your late father's car.
13:30Well, I am.
13:31And my father would be honoured to.
13:32Oh, thank you very much, Colin.
13:34That's brilliant.
13:35While Mike's away,
13:37I need to fix that dodgy clutch on Scott's trade-in,
13:40the Morris Traveller.
13:41All I need to do is get this up in the air and have a look at that clutch.
13:45The great thing about a classic like this is they were built with owner's repairs in mind.
13:50So access is a doddle and you only need the most basic tools.
13:54Now, luckily, the clutch mechanism on these is really simple.
13:57The clutch pedal up here is connected to the actual clutch here,
14:01just simply by this rod, which is threaded.
14:03And that gives us some adjustment.
14:05At the moment, we've got almost no travel on the pedal itself.
14:07But by moving the bar along its threaded section,
14:10we can increase the travel on the clutch pedal,
14:12making it much more usable.
14:20So, crack off the lock nut.
14:23And then all I'm going to do is wind up this adjuster nut by,
14:27I mean, a couple of threads.
14:28There's no exact measurement here.
14:29It's all being done by feel and my personal experience.
14:34Lock the lock nut back up.
14:35Pop the spring back on.
14:40Jobs are good.
14:43This fix is resting entirely on my best guess about the adjustment.
14:47The only way to test it is to get in and give it a go.
14:50Let's see what that's done.
14:54So, select gear.
14:57And there we go.
14:59That feels so much more normal.
15:01The clutch bike point is now pretty much just about in the middle of the clutch's range,
15:06which is much better than it was when it was outside.
15:09So, that's it.
15:09This car is done.
15:10A bit of a clean up.
15:11And Mike is going to have absolutely no trouble selling it.
15:14While Elvis has been busy in the workshop, I've been heading back from Scotland with the X-Type Jag.
15:26There he is.
15:27The wanderer returns.
15:29Yes, I do.
15:31How was it, mate?
15:31What a journey.
15:34Scotland was so successful for us.
15:36And whilst I was there, I went and bought this, which I'm delighted with.
15:3953,000 miles full service history.
15:42Wow.
15:42I want them to see it and they're going to go for it.
15:44Because we need all the money we can muster if we're ever going to get to this camper van.
15:48Because Scott wants a really good camper.
15:52And to find a rust-free one is going to be tough.
15:54How on earth are we going to do that?
15:55Have you had any thoughts?
15:56I've had thoughts and I've had a couple of sleepless nights.
15:59In the meantime, let's get this turned around.
16:01Nice one.
16:03A quick checkover reveals one problem.
16:05The wheel bearings on the rear driver's side are worn out.
16:08So, I've ordered a new hub unit, which contains fresh bearings for £100.
16:13£100 to get this old car back on the road and running smoothly?
16:16Seems like a good deal to me.
16:17With the ABS sensor detached, I can unbolt and then remove the old hub unit.
16:28There we go.
16:31That is the old offending article.
16:34There isn't much to see, but I've already felt this play in it.
16:36So, I can go straight in the bin.
16:39Put a new one in.
16:41Next, the new unit goes in.
16:43I've put some thread locker on these brand new bolts.
16:47Put that through there.
16:49Slot that into the hole and then I can line it up with the upright.
16:55So, this thread lock is essentially a sort of light glue that just makes sure these can't come undone.
17:01They're in a really kind of inhospitable part of the car.
17:04They're subjected to massive amount of heat.
17:06So, it's kind of a little insurance policy to make sure they can't come undone.
17:10I tighten each nut gradually to ensure the hub sits flush with the upright.
17:18And there we go.
17:19That's the new hub and bearing on, which means all that's left is to put it back together.
17:23And that's just a reversal of the way it came apart.
17:25Wheel bearings minimise the friction of a car's spinning wheels.
17:31With a new set, this Jag will drive smoother than ever.
17:34And that's the key to selling it.
17:36There we go.
17:37Absolutely no play.
17:39Job done.
17:39Mike can market this Jag online to drivers who are after a bit of cut price luxury.
17:46But even if we get £3,500 for it, we're still miles off the £25,000 plus for a decent camper.
17:53I reckon our only viable option is to restore one.
17:56It should be £10,000 cheaper than buying a finished one.
17:58So, I'm taking Mike to see a project I've found.
18:01You're jumping the gun.
18:02You're taking me to go and see a camper.
18:04We ain't got no money yet.
18:05Well, I know that.
18:06I know that that's a bit of a challenge.
18:07But we can worry about the money later.
18:09What I want you to do is come and have a look at it and see if you approve.
18:13I've been in touch with my mate Lee who runs a wreckers yard and garage in Birmingham.
18:17He breaks VWs but also restores campers and has a project type 2 van up for sale.
18:24What's that?
18:24No way.
18:25Don't tell me it's this one.
18:26Lee.
18:27Good to see you, mate.
18:27Hey, mate.
18:28You OK?
18:28Lee, Mike.
18:29Nice to meet you.
18:30And you, mate.
18:31Elvis, there's just no way.
18:32Seriously, what are you thinking?
18:34This is not what we're looking for, is it?
18:36Come on, listen.
18:36You know how much a fully finished one of these costs.
18:39There's no way.
18:40I mean, literally no way we could afford to do that.
18:42Listen, we can't afford to build one as well.
18:44Look at the state of it.
18:46I mean, it's a mess.
18:47With the greatest respect, Lee.
18:48This is a great van.
18:49Exactly.
18:50Listen to the man.
18:50This is an expert in his field.
18:52This is a long way from being any kind of finished.
18:56It needs paint, needs interior, needs a roof.
18:59I know, I know, I know.
19:00The wheels are tatties.
19:01Just get inside and come and look at it.
19:03It's amazing.
19:03Look.
19:04I just don't think you accept the size of the task in front of you.
19:07I mean, can you imagine this thing when it's done?
19:10How much is this as it sits?
19:12Eight and a half.
19:14I know.
19:15We haven't even got the money to pay for this, so what are we doing?
19:16My idea is that we come here, we build it right here in his workshop, in stages, and
19:22that's the point of it.
19:23So whilst I'm out there trading and making money, I keep sending the profits for you to
19:27keep building this.
19:28It's going to be epic with a beautiful interior with a bed in it, them travelling around Scotland.
19:33What am I actually looking at here?
19:34I can see it's a bay window and it's the right sort of model, but what year is it?
19:38Yeah, but this is a 73.
19:40It's got a proper westy roof cut on it.
19:42We can build you a proper westy conversion for your proper family, a proper camper.
19:46That engine looks like it's fit for a scrappy.
19:49It's a bit of dust, that's all.
19:51This is going to be ridiculously challenging.
19:54Ridiculous.
19:55Are we in?
19:56Yeah, we're in.
19:58Yes!
19:58Lee is happy to wait for payment of the van, plus he's specialist labour and materials,
20:03until the project is finished.
20:05So while Elvis is busy with a camper, I can get training to pay those bills.
20:09But it's still going to be one heck of a challenge.
20:12The ambition in front of Elvis and Lee is massive, but they want to do it.
20:19And what a result it could end up being.
20:21We could have the most bespoke and amazing dream car for Scott and his lad.
20:26As for me, I better start trading.
20:29Elvis' labour will keep costs down, but we're going to have to pay for Lee's help,
20:35meaning the camper could cost upwards of £15,000 all in.
20:38So, I need to sell Scott's Traveller.
20:41Time to meet a potential buyer at the workshop.
20:47So, Scott's little Morish Traveller is a cracking little car.
20:51It's the perfect starter classic for anyone.
20:54I advertised it out there on the forums, and it didn't take too long for it to gain some interest.
20:59This chap behind me, he's called James.
21:02He's come down to have a look at it.
21:03But is he keen to do a deal?
21:06It is lovely, isn't it, James?
21:07I love it.
21:08Really nice car.
21:08I really like it.
21:09It's in really good condition.
21:10So, you want to get in the classic car world?
21:12Love to, yeah.
21:12Yeah, well, this is a great little starter classic.
21:15It even comes with a surfboard and a suitcase on the roof.
21:18Bonus.
21:18It's a bonus, isn't it?
21:20Well, listen, I've advertised it out there for £5,000.
21:22I'm going to be firm.
21:24I do need £5,500 for it.
21:27Yeah, um, yeah, I mean, it's, uh, body works really good condition.
21:31It would work, it's neon perfect.
21:33So, I'll be happy to give you that, yeah.
21:34Yeah, top man.
21:35Brought yourself a lovely car.
21:36Cheers, thank you.
21:36Well done.
21:37That £5,500 for the Traveller puts us at £6,900 in the Kitty, with the Jaguar still to sell.
21:44It's a start, but a long way from the £14,000 to £15,000 I need to raise to buy and restore Scott's camper.
21:51Luckily, Lee's happy to wait for payment.
21:54But back at his garage, I'm facing a big, rusty dose of reality that could add to our costs.
22:00Now, Lee's found us a brilliant project with this van.
22:03And I know that when I was speaking to Mike, I showed quite a lot of confidence about this bit, the engine.
22:08But I'll be honest with you, there was a fair amount of bravado in that.
22:11Because I actually have no idea whether this is going to run or not.
22:13And it has the potential to completely derail this project right at the very beginning.
22:18After adding new spark plugs, I'm attaching a specially adapted starter motor to see if it fires up.
22:23That's going to enable us to fire it up without the need of a big, heavy gearbox on the back.
22:28Then, I just need to install a bit of improvised wiring.
22:31Now, this set of wires here is essentially replicating the ignition that you would have on the dash of your car.
22:36This is going to connect up to the coil on there.
22:41There you go.
22:42With the engine hooked up to a battery and a fuel source, it's ready to test.
22:46If this doesn't start and we find even bigger problems, we could be into a new engine, which could cost a whopping two grand.
22:52Meaning Mike will have to do even more flips.
22:55And I guess this is the moment of truth.
22:57I mean, this really could make or break this project.
23:00Now we need to breathe it into life. Come on.
23:06Next, I'm battling to bolster our fighting funds.
23:17Can I be a bit cheeky and come in at three?
23:19Oh, you said the word bit cheeky. That was very cheeky.
23:23And it's make or break on the engine.
23:25I don't know how I can bear to call Mike up and tell him this doesn't work.
23:29We're trying to help Scott get his dream camper van so he can explore Scotland with his son.
23:42I know I've seen making Elvis a massive challenge.
23:46So I hope they can do it.
23:47The only way we can afford it is to restore this one, as decent ones can go for £25,000.
23:52But it's a big gamble, as I don't even know if the engine works.
23:56Built up oil pressure, so that is the first relief.
23:59Now we need to breathe it into life. Come on.
24:07Hold on.
24:10Okay.
24:11So, hopefully, nothing serious.
24:16Come on!
24:18Come on.
24:19Ah, yes!
24:35I'm so happy!
24:36I'm really happy with that.
24:38Honestly, the relief.
24:39I mean, now, essentially, I know it works.
24:41That's the basic need I need from this thing.
24:44That's going to be so good.
24:45I need to strip it back, clean it up, get it painted.
24:47There's a few more checks to do, but this thing works, and that is my biggest fear alleviated.
24:53Results.
24:54With just £12 spent on spark plugs, I've got the engine running.
24:58I need to strip it and paint it, but those are just jobs I can do myself.
25:02However, the camper project is still going to cost £14,000 to £15,000, as we'll need to pay Lee for all his help.
25:08So, I need to shift the Jaguar X-Type that I picked up in Scotland for £2,600.
25:13We are so happy to be selling it to this lovely chap behind me.
25:17He's called Spencer.
25:18He's come down, he's taken it for a test drive.
25:21He likes it.
25:21I'm asking a very reasonable £3,700 for it.
25:25Let's see if I can put a deal together.
25:27I love this car.
25:28Every time I look at it, I think it looks more than the sum of its parts.
25:31It's shiny like a pin.
25:33Why do you want an X-Type?
25:34Well, I had an X-Type before.
25:35I really enjoy driving them, and I'd like another one.
25:37I'm asking an incredibly reasonable £3,700 for it.
25:43Can I be a bit cheeky and come in at three?
25:46He said, can I be a bit cheeky?
25:49That was very cheeky.
25:51I couldn't do it for three grand, blimey, no way.
25:54I have got a little bit of wiggle room in the car.
25:56You've got the cash?
25:58On me.
25:58I do need to move on.
26:00I'll let you have the car for £3,400, but that's it.
26:04That's it.
26:06Deal.
26:06Yes?
26:07Well done, mate.
26:08Got yourself a cracking car.
26:09Well done.
26:10We spent £100 on the Jag, so that's a profit of £700,
26:14and now we've got just over £10,000 in our dream car fund.
26:17It's good, but I still need to raise another £4,000 to pay for restoring and kitting out the camper.
26:23So I'll need to do at least one more flip, maybe even more.
26:28That cash will pay for the van and Lee's help.
26:31We've painted the engine and the bodywork's been restored.
26:33Now we can focus on making it really look the part.
26:36I've been working incredibly hard with the guys to get this into this lovely coat of primer,
26:41which does look great, but it's far from the finished product.
26:45The next stage is to use this.
26:47It's a dry guide coat, essentially a black powder that I'm going to rub all over, giving us a black coat,
26:56and then what I'm going to do is rub it down with a sanding block,
26:59which will then reveal any imperfections in the surface of the bodywork,
27:03so any low spots that will be left with the black powder still there.
27:07And from there I can rub it back, I can fill it if required, and get it to a point where we're nearly ready to start putting the colour on.
27:13A tub of dry guide coat like this will set you back about 20 quid, and it's well worth it to get that flawless finish.
27:27There you go, that's exactly what I was talking about.
27:30You can start to see these high and low points.
27:33It's a really nice way of just seeing exactly where these little imperfections are that, with a naked eye, perhaps you wouldn't find.
27:41Paying for Lee's help isn't the only cost on this project.
27:45The thing about this is that it is just hard work.
27:49The next phase, though, kitting out the interior and finishing off this brilliant project for Scott and his son,
27:55well, that is going to take some money, and that means Mike's got to get his skates on and earn us some cash.
28:03With these big bills, I need to do more trades.
28:06Luckily, I've had a tip-off from my friend Charlotte, who runs a motor racing team up the road from the workshop.
28:11She's looking to sell a car quickly, often a great way for me to pack a bargain.
28:16She says that it's time to sell another toy, so she's got a car for sale.
28:21And the car in question is rather exciting.
28:23It's a Vauxhall Monaro V8.
28:26That looks like the car.
28:28Very nice.
28:30And here she is.
28:30Hello, how are you?
28:31Good morning, Mike.
28:32So, I know a little bit about these, because, you know, originally it was a Holden from Australia.
28:37Yep.
28:37A brutal V8 engine.
28:39Yep.
28:39But rebadges a Vauxhall in this country and come through Vauxhall dealerships.
28:43Yes.
28:43Why are you selling it, then?
28:44I am gathering my funds to start another season of motor racing.
28:48Sadly, this is going to have to go and be put into that pool of money.
28:51And how long you had it?
28:53Can we have a look inside?
28:54Yeah, a couple of years.
28:55So, yeah, have a good look round.
28:56You've had it a couple of years?
28:57Yeah.
28:58Nice, isn't it?
28:58Electric seats, leather interior.
29:00Yeah.
29:01Small admission.
29:02The digital odometer isn't displaying at the moment.
29:06Okay, so that's a good little thing for me to fix, isn't it?
29:09Yep.
29:09How much do you reckon this car's worth?
29:11I mean, what would you say to ten grand?
29:12Well, let me drive it first.
29:13Yep.
29:14And then I'll let you know when I come back.
29:15Fine.
29:15Nice one.
29:16All right, I'll give you a toot when I pull back up outside.
29:18Right, fine.
29:18Wait till you fire it up.
29:19Can't wait.
29:22Oh, wow.
29:29It is glorious.
29:31Oh, I feel like Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder.
29:36It's 0 to 60.
29:37It's just over five seconds.
29:39Top speed over 160 miles an hour.
29:42There's a straight bit of road.
29:43And when you put your foot down, it sounds...
29:46Oh.
29:47Oh.
29:52Yes, admittedly, it's got a few little faults, like the odometer is not registering, so we'd
29:58need to replace that.
29:59But other than that, I think this car, well, it's a bit of a bargain, because where else
30:04can you go and spend ten grand on getting 400 horsepower worth a V8?
30:19Well?
30:20Oh, fast, brutal and fun.
30:23I sort of want to own it, so...
30:24You look happy with it, Mike.
30:25I'm very happy with it.
30:26So you want how much?
30:27£10,000 for it.
30:28I want ten grand.
30:29Got a deal.
30:29Thank you very, very much, Charlotte.
30:31No problem.
30:31I really appreciate the phone call.
30:32See, I'm going to drive it round at the workshop now.
30:34Lovely.
30:35There you go.
30:35Speak to you later.
30:39Absolutely brilliant choice.
30:41Thank you, Charlotte.
30:42Nice one.
30:49A couple of days later, with Elvis busy on the camper, I'm going to sort out the broken
30:54odometer myself.
30:55I've sourced a replacement from a nearby garage.
30:59I found a cluster for it.
31:00I've just got to fit it.
31:02Now, to start with, I can see there's two little screws at the top, and then this, this
31:08is going to pull forward, like so, and that comes off.
31:15You just don't want to drop a screw, because if it goes in behind the dashboard, whenever
31:18you drive down the road, you'll have an annoying rattle, and it will never go away, and it will
31:23be that screw just bouncing around.
31:25So just be really careful when you do it.
31:27And there it is.
31:28Now, that's the broken unit, and this is my replacement unit.
31:32I got the second-hand cluster for £150 from a Vauxhall specialist who kept it off an old
31:38monarro.
31:39When we plug in our computer into the old dashboard, the electronic control unit tells us what the
31:45mileage is.
31:46It's 89,400 miles.
31:48Now, the problem I've got is the new instrument cluster is done at over 132,000 miles.
31:55So that means that I'm actually putting more miles on the clock in our car.
31:59However, there are companies out there that call themselves Digital Mileage Correction Services,
32:04and we've got in touch with one, and legally, he can come down, plug into our ECU, and he
32:10can flash this to have exactly 89,400 miles, the same as the old cluster, the broken one,
32:18that's come off.
32:19And that way, we've got a working cluster with the correct mileage.
32:23So before I do anything with this replacement cluster, let me just plug it in, hold it up
32:30there on the dash.
32:31I'm going to switch it on.
32:33It's lit up.
32:34We've got an instrument cluster that's working, which is nice.
32:37Very good.
32:38Yep.
32:39It's all lit up.
32:40It's all working.
32:41And once the mileage is legally reset, the car can go up for sale.
32:43I reckon I can get 14 to 15 grand for it, but we could need even more than that to pay
32:48for the camper resto.
32:51Because back in Birmingham, Lee and I are eight weeks into the project, and the costs
32:54are mounting up.
32:56Painting the camper in halves is a specialist and time-consuming job.
32:59We've done the bottom half in iconic orange, and the top half in pastel white, and the next
33:04job is to install the engine.
33:05This takes me back to being on my own driveway when I was about 17, dropping the engine out
33:10the back of my Beetle, just for fun.
33:13Just for the hell of it.
33:14Just because you can.
33:15Exactly.
33:16Engine in, we just need an interior.
33:18But the bodywork and paint job, plus the cost of the van, mean we now owe Lee 13 grand.
33:23Refitting the interior, we'll add at least another thousand on top.
33:27It's time to call Mike.
33:28Hello, mate.
33:29You all right?
33:30It's good to see you.
33:31Hello, Mike.
33:32Yeah, how you doing?
33:33What's that frown for?
33:34I don't like the frown.
33:35Yeah, I know.
33:36Listen, it ain't great news, I have to say.
33:37Costs at this end, I'm afraid, are going through the roof.
33:41This is turning out to be an expensive job.
33:43How much are we talking about?
33:44I reckon we are 13 grand in without even touching the interior fit at the moment.
33:50Oh, what?
33:51Yeah, you've got to get some big money for that Monaro.
33:54Next time you ring me, can it be good news, please?
33:57I'll do my best.
33:59All right, buddy.
34:00Cheers, pal.
34:01See you later.
34:02Cheers, pal.
34:03You'd better come through, otherwise there is no way we're going to get Scott's dream car finished.
34:11Next, I need a miracle from the Monaro sale.
34:14It's going to cost $3,100 to get it to New Zealand.
34:18$3,100 to ship it?
34:19Yeah, $3,000 to get it, yeah.
34:21And will all our hard work be worth it?
34:24Well, have we managed to pull it off?
34:26Oh, mate, just wait and see.
34:36We're trying to get Scott, the VW camper of his dreams.
34:40I would just love to just wake up and just go out for that next adventure.
34:43We owe Lee 13 grand for the van and his share of the work.
34:47Plus, we still need to pay for the interior.
34:49That means I need to get four to five grand profit on the Monaro I bought for £10,000.
34:55So I've literally had it advertised across the world.
34:59Now, the V8 Vauxhall Monaro is such a rare car that I've advertised it globally.
35:04I've had some interest from New Zealand, of all places.
35:08The guy is called Grant.
35:09I've emailed him some pictures.
35:10He likes what he sees, but he's going to give me a video call and I'm going to see if I can put a deal together.
35:17Hello, Grant.
35:18How are you?
35:19Good, Mike.
35:20Yourself?
35:21Yeah, not bad at all.
35:22Thank you very much.
35:23Did you get all the pictures I sent you?
35:23Yeah, awesome.
35:24Yeah, brilliant.
35:25Yeah, love them.
35:26Tell me, why is a guy from New Zealand searching in the UK for a Vauxhall?
35:31Well, basically, they're just hard to get in New Zealand, the starters, and they're pricey.
35:36And that's a grouse car you've got there, so value for money, that's awesome.
35:40Well, listen, I've advertised the car for £15,000.
35:43Do you want to make an offer or are you just happy to give me...
35:46£14,500.
35:47How's that sound?
35:48You want me to give you £500 off?
35:50Well, basically, it's going to cost me $3,100 to get it to New Zealand.
35:54£3,100 to ship it?
35:56Yeah, yeah, £3,000 is needed to get it here.
35:58£14,500, I reckon we could cut a deal.
36:01Definitely worth it.
36:02Okay.
36:03Well, listen, virtually hold out your hand.
36:08You got yourself a deal.
36:09Well done.
36:10Awesome.
36:10Thanks, Mike.
36:11I appreciate that.
36:11Result.
36:12Replacing and resetting the Monaro odometer costs £290, so we've made over £4,000 profit,
36:18and our dream car fund now stands at £14,410.
36:22So we can pay lean the £13,000 we owe him for the van and restoration, while the remaining
36:28cash will cover the interior fit-out.
36:31And that means we can afford the high-end Westphalia fixes and fittings that Scott wants.
36:36And the very first thing to happen is to get this vinyl flooring in, because it's after
36:40that, that all the cabinetry can come in and sit on top of it.
36:44This kit was rescued from a scrap type 2, so it fits perfectly into position.
36:50The great thing about this Westphalia kit is that it is originally designed for these body
36:55shells.
36:55It's tailored to fit, so like a modular system, it all just slots into place.
36:59It's like a glove.
37:04It's like a glove.
37:05And it wouldn't be complete without a fold-down bed that doubles as a bench seat, upholstered
37:10in the classic orange plaid of Westphalia.
37:16Mate, it looks so good.
37:18It's a late finish as we put the last pieces in, but it's been worth it.
37:22I don't know about you, mate, but I am, well, I'm knackered, first of all.
37:26But I am really proud of what we've turned out, you know.
37:28Yeah.
37:29What do you think it's worth now?
37:30I reckon it's £35,000.
37:32I can't wait to show it to you.
37:36And the next day, I've come to see the finished camper for myself.
37:40Remember, last time I came here, that type 2 was just a shell, didn't even have an engine
37:44in it.
37:46And now, I'm hoping that I'm going to be greeted with something that actually functions.
37:52There he is.
37:54Hello, mate.
37:55All right, mate.
37:55You look like you've been working hard.
37:57Man, I am broken, utterly broken.
37:59Well, have we managed to pull it off?
38:00Oh, mate, just wait and see.
38:02I can see Lee's legs underneath there.
38:06That's not the same type 2.
38:08That is the same car.
38:09Oh, you're kidding me.
38:10That paintwork is sensational.
38:12Told you we could do it.
38:13Isn't it amazing?
38:14I can't believe it.
38:16Look at the interior.
38:18The interior's insane.
38:19Look at the tartan.
38:21It's wonderful, isn't it?
38:23Yeah, it is.
38:23So, it's all original, authentic Westphalia, trimmed.
38:26It's all genuine Westphalia.
38:28Get in and show them the piece de resistance.
38:31Yeah, yeah.
38:32Watch this.
38:33Look at that.
38:35And it matches the epic paintwork on the outside.
38:38Come and have a look round the back here.
38:40Do you remember when we first came here, the engine was in a cardboard box inside?
38:43You are geniuses.
38:47I'm literally blown away by the quality of this.
38:50It's absolutely brilliant.
38:52I mean, it's beyond brilliant.
38:54Easily the best we've ever done.
38:56So, Shamim, you get this out on the road and get it delivered to Scotland?
39:00I thought you'd never ask.
39:04The quality of your work is exceptional.
39:07Well, it's been our pleasure, guys.
39:09So, happy travels.
39:10Thank you, mate.
39:11Thank you, mate.
39:12Right, let's hit the road.
39:20It's hard to believe that 12 weeks ago, this was a shell in a scrapyard.
39:24Now, after spending £14,400, it's Scott's dream car.
39:30Time to head to Scotland to surprise him with it.
39:33Come on, what's it feel like?
39:34Oh, man, it's unbelievable.
39:36I mean, it's so nostalgic.
39:38It's running like a dream.
39:40You've absolutely smashed it.
39:44It looks amazing.
39:45So happy with it.
39:46And, you know, it was only you keep feeding the money in that kept me going.
39:51Scott and his son are going to be able to come out and enjoy this stunning countryside.
39:56It's going to change their life.
39:58It's probably the vehicle that I am most proud of on the whole of our dream car experience.
40:02I've arranged for Scott to come to Blair Castle.
40:07He thinks we're talking about van specs and has no idea he's about to get his camper.
40:13So, Elvis is going to hide around the back.
40:15Wow, look at this place.
40:19Scott!
40:20How are you, mate?
40:21How are you, buddy?
40:22So good to see you.
40:23How you been?
40:24You been all right?
40:25Yeah, not too bad.
40:26How's little Aaron?
40:26Very good.
40:27You're doing really, really well at school.
40:29Excellent.
40:30And when we met, you said, you and Aaron, you want to get out there,
40:33you want to get up to the Highlands, get off the beaten track, come and visit places like this.
40:37And this is amazing, isn't it?
40:38It's absolutely fantastic.
40:40And this is exactly the places that we would love to visit.
40:43Shall we go outside and look at the castle?
40:45Sounds like a great idea.
40:46Yeah.
40:48Where they come.
40:49Here they come.
40:51Right.
40:53This is it.
40:54This is really what you want to experience, is it?
40:56Exactly.
40:57It's exactly as good.
40:58A bit of history.
40:59Let's get the great outdoors.
41:00And wouldn't it be nice if you could do it in a beautiful looking VW camper
41:06that looks exactly like this one because, uh, Scott, that's your dream car.
41:14Yeah, that's really your dream car.
41:16And this is the man who's done all the work.
41:18This is Elvis.
41:21Good to see you, man.
41:22How's that?
41:23Are you all right?
41:23What do you think?
41:25No, I'm taking it by you.
41:28It's the most restored vehicle we've ever done.
41:30It's the most expensive vehicle we've ever done.
41:33We've done this for you and for Aaron.
41:36I can't do it.
41:38Mate, you deserve it.
41:39Honestly, don't.
41:40You're going to get me, you're going to get me going.
41:42You're very welcome.
41:42And wait until you see the rest of it as well.
41:45Have a look at this.
41:48Oh, my God.
41:50It's got a rock and roller bed down here so you can both get in it.
41:53You can both travel around with an engine that's purring.
41:56It's going to run reliably.
41:58It's absolutely everything you asked for and more.
42:00I don't know what to say, mate.
42:03It genuinely did not.
42:05A big moment, isn't it?
42:07Eh?
42:07It's not every day somebody wants to...
42:09It's weird as a car.
42:10It's not just a car, though.
42:12It's not a car.
42:12It's a lifestyle and it gets you back on track and it gets you back adventuring with your son.
42:18And the idea behind this is not only that we create your dream vehicle, but we change your life at the same time.
42:25You definitely are going to.
42:27My dream was something I didn't think was touchable.
42:30And this is.
42:31And it's even better than I could even have imagined.
42:34This genuinely is your dream car.
42:37Greatest day since my son was born, so.
42:39Oh, thank you very much.
42:42That's amazing.
42:43That's amazing.
42:43We'll take that.
42:44We'll enjoy it.
42:45Yeah.
42:45Thank you very much.
42:46Go on.
42:46It's all for you.
42:48Thank you very much.
42:49It's a pleasure, buddy.
42:50Absolute pleasure.
42:51You are very, very welcome, mate.
42:54Enjoy.
42:54Nice one.
42:56Well, mate, that was all worth it, wasn't it?
42:57In the end, eh?
42:58The emotion there, you can see what a difference it's going to make to Scott's life.
43:02He's going to really enjoy that with Aaron.
43:05See you later, Scott.
43:06Good luck.
43:07Enjoy the journey.
43:12I'm Michael Nelvis.
43:13Meet Nelvis.
43:14I can't thank you enough for making my dream car a reality.
43:20He is absolutely stunning.
43:22I cannot believe how good the camper has turned out to be.
43:26You've far exceeded anything I could have ever imagined, and I can't thank you both enough.
43:31Thank you again.
43:33It means the world to me.
43:43I'll see you next time.
43:45I'll see you next time.
43:46Bye-bye.
43:46We'll see you next time.
