00:01This way, this way.
00:02A student killed two people and wounded four others at Florida State University in Tallahassee
00:08before he was shot by officers and hospitalized on Thursday.
00:12Police said the 20-year-old student, identified as Phoenix Eichner, went on a shooting rampage
00:18outside the Student Union building at about 11.50 a.m. using his mother's handgun.
00:24They said the university police engaged in a gunfire with the suspect before gunning
00:28him down.
00:29They said the suspect's mother is a Leon County Sheriff Deputy.
00:33Two victims are deceased and five individuals have been transported to a local hospital with
00:41gunshot wounds.
00:42The shooter has also been transported to a local hospital.
00:46The two deceased are not students.
00:49The shooter is believed to be a current FSU student.
00:53Our deputy, Deputy Eichner, has been with the Leon County Sheriff's Office for over 18 years.
00:57She has a tremendous job that she's done.
01:02Her service to this community has been exceptional.
01:07Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons.
01:12That was one of the weapons that was found at the scene.
01:15We will continue that investigation into how that weapon was used and what other weapons,
01:21perhaps, he may have had access to.
01:24We have been steeped in the Leon County Sheriff's Office family, engaged in a number of training
01:30programs that we have.
01:31So it's not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons.
01:35This event is tragic in more ways than you people in the audience could ever phantom from
01:42a law enforcement perspective.
01:45But I will tell you this.
01:47We will make sure that we do everything we can to prosecute.
01:50The university's president, Richard McCullough, said the university's community is heartbroken
01:55by the violence and the traumatic event.
01:57More than 42,000 students attend classes at the main campus.
02:01U.S. President Donald Trump said, while he will once again look into the gun legislation,
02:07he also has an obligation to protect the Second Amendment.
02:10Well, I'm going to have to, look, I'm a big advocate of the Second Amendment.
02:14I have been from the beginning.
02:15I protected it.
02:17And these things are terrible.
02:20But the gun doesn't do the shooting.
02:22The people do.
02:23It's, you know, a phrase that's used probably too often.
02:26I will tell you that it's a shame.
02:31I'm just hearing about it now.
02:32I just hear about it.
02:34I know the area very well.
02:35I know the school very well.
02:37I know everything about it.
02:38It's Florida.
02:39And we'll have more to say about it later.
