00:00Today truly is a sad day for Madison and for our country.
00:12It is a day that I believe will live in our collective minds for a very, very long time.
00:17Here are the details.
00:19Today at 1057 a.m., our team was called to the Abundant Life Christian School in reference
00:26to an active shooter.
00:30We know that three people are dead, including the suspect shooter.
00:35We know that the suspect shooter was a teenage student who attended the school.
00:41At this time, we're not releasing the age or gender of the student or any other identifying
00:47remarks about the student.
00:50Two other people that died were a teacher and a teenage student.
00:57Six other people were injured.
01:00Two students are now in critical condition in the hospital, and these injuries are considered
01:07life-threatening injuries.
01:10Four students are also at other area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
01:16Many of you have asked me about the why of this.
01:21Why did this happen?
01:23What do we know?
01:24What was the motivation?
01:25I do not know.
01:27But I will tell you this.
01:28Our detectives are working hard in the investigative process to find out as many answers as we
01:34can so that we can further prevent these things from happening, not only in this community,
01:40but in other communities around our country.
01:45I think we can all agree that enough is enough, and we have to come together to do everything
01:52we can to support our students, to prevent press conferences like these from happening
01:59again and again and again.
02:03We know it was a handgun.
02:05We know a handgun was recovered.
02:08This is an incredibly sad day for our community.
02:12As you've heard, there is no danger to the community at this time, but our entire community
02:20has been impacted by this tragic incident.
02:24On behalf of the Common Council and the City of Madison staff, I want to offer our heartfelt
02:29condolences to the victims and families and to the whole Abundant Life community.
02:36I am on record that I think we need to do better in our country and our community to
02:42prevent gun violence, and I hoped that this day would never come in Madison.
02:48It is not something that any mayor, any fire chief, any police chief, any person in public
02:55office ever wants to have to deal with.
02:58And so I will ask our entire community and our entire country to do whatever we can to
03:04make sure that no public official ever has to stand in this position again.
