00:00Backstage, Mr. Dirk Spelny is here.
00:02We are.
00:02Looking amazing as always.
00:03Yeah, you look good.
00:04I'm going to start doing some more push-ups.
00:06Well, I need to gain a few inches here.
00:08Looking good.
00:09Only one of those things is actually happening.
00:11Yeah, probably.
00:12Probably, sure.
00:13Can you bring it to you?
00:14Thanks for taking a few minutes.
00:15Yeah.
00:16Congrats on the success.
00:17Thanks.
00:18You've been doing this a long time.
00:20Yeah, I have been.
00:21But it seems like in the last few years, you're in this rhythm.
00:25You're in this...
00:26Yeah, oh yeah.
00:27It's been fun.
00:28It's almost like a second half of my career.
00:31You know, the first one kind of was one thing, and that one made a Bluegrass record.
00:34And we came back out again in 2013.
00:37We did a co-headlining tour with Miranda.
00:39In 2014, we started our own thing.
00:41And it's been every year coming back to play in this mid-Florida credit...
00:46Union.
00:47Amphitheater.
00:48That's how we do it.
00:49Even being local, it's hard to say.
00:50We just call it the amp usually.
00:52You know, I was talking about an interview.
00:53I had this building so special for me, because I know all the times I've played here.
00:55This backstage is kind of iconic backstage.
00:57There's been a lot of parties back there.
00:58Tiki Bar.
00:59There's a Tiki Bar for those who haven't seen it.
01:00Yeah, Tiki Bar back here.
01:01And to sell this place out, which I did a couple of years ago, it's a huge deal.
01:05So, I love being here.
01:06And it's been a great role.
01:07All the years with Kenny and stuff like that.
01:08Oh, yeah.
01:09Lots of fun back here.
01:10It's Kenny.
01:11He's the one that kind of turned me on.
01:12Before Kenny, I had been playing a lot of bars and clubs for many years.
01:15And Kenny's the first big tour I've been on.
01:17And he kind of showed me the ropes on how to do it, you know?
01:20Yeah.
01:21Let's give the hand real quick, because the cast is still on.
01:23I know.
01:24It's close.
01:25It's getting...
01:26What do you think?
01:27Can that come off?
01:28You said about one more show, right?
01:29Oh, no.
01:30You don't need any coffee.
01:31Come on.
01:32I'm ready to go.
01:33I'm ready to go.
01:34I don't need a drink.
01:35It's going to come off.
01:36It's going to come off.
01:37I was actually just looking up on YouTube, like, DIY, how to take your cast off.
01:40Because I don't want to deal with, like...
01:41You don't want to go to the doctor and have the doctor come to you?
01:44Let's all give it a shot.
01:45We'll do drinks tonight.
01:46We'll figure it out.
01:47How much could you get on eBay for that once you take it off?
01:49You think someone would actually win?
01:50Yes.
01:51100%.
01:52Donate the money to charity.
01:53Let's try.
01:54We should do a charity.
01:55That would be pretty cool.
01:56That is so weird, yeah.
01:57So, we brought your thing.
01:58Melody party, Dana.
01:59Yeah.
02:00Well, you had said when you do Hot Country Nights at the beginning that the cast was a dead giveaway.
02:04But there's no way that I can hide it without people knowing.
02:06Yes.
02:07So, I thought, we'll get you a hand.
02:08Now, can I take this out?
02:09Because I've done this.
02:10Yeah.
02:11We've got to figure out how...
02:12Did you really give this to me?
02:13Yeah, that's yours.
02:14No, you're really getting the phone to me.
02:15Now, the only thing is, is they didn't have a left hand.
02:16They only had the right hand.
02:17That's okay.
02:18I can figure that part out.
02:19So, yeah.
02:20So, let me...
02:21There we go.
02:22Cut this down.
02:23So, we'll just have to...
02:24See, it actually looks just fine, you know.
02:26He's kind of like...
02:27Look, you can barely even tell anything's wrong with your hand.
02:30See?
02:31It's perfect now.
02:34Doug Douglason, yeah.
02:35Could go on stage with that tonight, maybe.
02:36I think he could pull this off.
02:37I don't know.
02:38If anybody could, Doug Douglas.
02:39I'd rather sure Doug can do a lot of things.
02:41He's pretty...
02:42Look at the veins on that thing.
02:43Wow, it's pretty real.
02:44I mean, that thing's been working out, for sure.
02:45I'm not used to seeing you...
02:47These are amazing.
02:49Isn't it fun?
02:50Yeah, so, you know, there we are.
02:51I figured it'd be fun on tour, so.
02:53Yeah.
02:54I'm not used to seeing you without a beer, and you're like, for real.
02:55Like, without a beer.
02:56Do you beer before shows or after shows?
02:58I usually...
02:59Well, we do three shows a night, so we do an acoustic set at 610, which is all bluegrass,
03:03so I've kind of got to be on my toes for that one.
03:05And then the nights...
03:06I usually wait until actually before my real show, because it's just a long night, but
03:09I don't want to be...
03:10My fans...
03:11I saw them tailgating today.
03:12They're crazy out there.
03:13That's why I'm drenched.
03:14We saw someone twerking upside down on a tree, so I'm just saying.
03:17She's probably not going to make it.
03:18She's probably not going to make it to the main show, which is not a problem.
03:20I don't think so.
03:21But if I don't make it to the main show, that's going to be a problem.
03:23Yeah.
03:24I've got to be a little smarter about it.
03:26Do you, real quick, because I know you've got to get rolling.
03:28Like, when you were coming up through the ranks, do you remember a time when, like,
03:31an established artist at that time gave you a shout-out?
03:33Maybe it was an interview.
03:34Maybe it was on CMT or something.
03:35Like, do you remember coming up and going, wow, that person just mentioned me?
03:38Yeah.
03:39I mean, for me, it's like, the craziest thing is the guys you grew up listening to.
03:42So, you know, Alan Jackson and Clint Black and Garth and Travis Tritt and these guys,
03:47and Mark Miller of the band Sawyer Brown.
03:49Yep, yep.
03:50We played a show together at our festival out of Colorado, Seven Peaks,
03:53and he just felt like a good buddy of mine.
03:55So, like, we talked all the time on the phone.
03:56So, these guys you grew up watching, for me, it's 90s country.
03:59For those guys to know your name, you know, like, you know, the first time I met Garth,
04:03he was like, hey, you sold 57,000 copies the first week of your album.
04:07That's crazy, right?
04:08That's awesome.
04:09How do you write a little of that information, you know?
04:11I always like to do this backstage.
04:12So, like, you remember that?
04:13You remember how good it made you feel?
04:14Oh, yeah.
04:15Of course.
04:16Like, you shout someone out that you see coming out that you're like,
04:17that's something, that could be something.
04:18Yeah.
04:19Like, is there anyone that kind of just is in your mind, or you hear their song,
04:21and you're like.
04:22Yeah.
04:23I mean, just because you're on a tour, I guess it's kind of, I'm biased.
04:25Sure.
04:26But Sneel is amazing.
04:27I mean, I feel like there's a younger crop of women that are like leading the charge,
04:30and really interesting songs.
04:32You know, and speaking of the 90s, you know, back when you had Faith Hill and Martina,
04:35you know, Patti Lova, Susie Valvius, Merrin Chapin Carpenter.
04:37You know, there's a new influx of girls out there?
04:39Okay.
04:40I think Merrin Morris is like totally leading the charge for sure.
04:43Oh, yeah.
04:44Yeah.
04:45There's so many good artists out there.
04:46You know, I saw Lee Bryce has got a song at the top of the charts right now.
04:49I love Lee.
04:50He's a great singer.
04:51I love Merrin.
04:52It's such a good song.
04:53Yeah.
04:54So I kind of like, I think the great thing about country music is we all support everybody.
04:56Yeah.
04:57And we're all like positive.
04:58It's like, I am at least.
04:59I've found over the years that it doesn't do you any good to compete against anybody.
05:02It's just you've got to compete against yourself.
05:04Literally.
05:05There you go.
05:06Sometimes you have to fight yourself.
05:07I don't know who's winning right now.
05:08I don't know who's winning either.
05:09Is it this one or this one?
05:10This is an unbelievable battle going on here.
05:13And you'll find out Monday morning who wins this, but I don't know.
05:18It was there.
05:19Sorry, we'll let you go.
05:20But congrats on living.
05:22Great song, my man.
05:23And great message on that.
05:25Just being in the moment and kids and everything, right?
05:27This is the live show.
05:28It's about living.
05:29You know, just come out here.
05:30You're recharging your batteries, having fun, being with your friends.
05:33You know, not just, especially nationally.
05:35You spend a lot of time inside the house.
05:37The weather's kind of not as nice as it is here.
05:40So I come down here.
05:41I'm living.
05:42I'm going to charge for the whole year.
05:43So I love being here.
05:44Well, we love having you.
05:46Welcome anytime.
05:47I don't give you any gifts.
05:48This is awesome.
05:49I have a feeling my kids are going to love this.
05:50I bet you didn't expect a giant hand today.
05:51So there you go.
05:52Somebody just got excited.
05:53Yes.
05:54You can beat up on some people with it.
05:56Yes, this is amazing.
05:57That got to Melanie's apartment last night via Uber at like 9 o'clock.
06:00No way.
06:01It was the whole process.
06:03It was so nice.
06:04Thank you all for being here.
06:05Thank you all for supporting us.
06:07It works.
06:08And he's such a real dude, man.
06:09He takes care of his fans.
06:10And I think you can see that here and all that he does.
06:12So thank you all for being here.
06:13Have a great show tonight.
06:14See you all tonight.
