00:00I have a soft spot for these cars, as you know.
00:02A rag top, semi-four split window.
00:04This is such a cool car.
00:06Holy .
00:07Mystery bolt.
00:08Every hard 90 in a fluid system
00:10is equivalent to the restriction of seven feet of line.
00:12And phew.
00:15There's something else going on in the boys.
00:17So much for just four bolts.
00:18On paper, this thing fits, but it clearly isn't fitting.
00:22I don't want to get stuck under 1,000 pounds of metal
00:24right now.
00:26Smells like greasy-ass old Volkswagen.
00:28I love it.
00:29When I look at a blank canvas, I see endless possibilities.
00:37As the ideas come to mind, the lines
00:39start to fall into place.
00:41And before you know it, we have a bitchin' ride.
00:46A bitchin' ride has intense color.
00:48This is gorgeous.
00:50Performance.
00:51It's fantastic.
00:53Stance, wheels, sound.
00:56There's one thing that makes our car stand out.
00:59Cars are bitchin' rides.
01:01Well, it never gets old.
01:02Ha, ha, ha, ha.
01:04My very good, beautiful friend Linda is here from Radford Racing School, and she gave us the opportunity to work on a car for her, and I'm taking that opportunity.
01:24Linda, I have a soft spot for these cars, as you know.
01:28Yep.
01:29You called me up.
01:30You guys had already left Barrett, and you called me up and said, hey, there's this cute little black bug, and blah, blah, blah, and it had the rag top and the red interior.
01:37Yeah.
01:38My name is Linda Velasco, and I'm here to talk to Dave about our 53 Volkswagen Beetle.
01:43It was a recent purchase at Barrett Jackson.
01:45I have never worked with Dave before.
01:47We've known Dave a few years, but I know he's the right guy for the job.
01:50Yeah, I know about the car because, actually, I was going to buy the car.
01:54Did you have Volkswagen before then, too?
01:55We did not have Volkswagens, and I've wanted a bug.
01:57I've wanted a bus, as you all know, but we just haven't been able to find them yet, and this was the first one that we were able to get.
02:04Well, this was a really great price and a great opportunity on a really nice car, and I told her, I said, if you really want the car, it's a nice car.
02:12I won't bid against you.
02:14I actually won in both ways because I get to still do what I wanted to do to the car, but I'm going to do it with her money.
02:20It's awesome.
02:21So where are you going to keep this one?
02:22This is going to be in Florida.
02:24It's going to be our beach car to ride along the beach.
02:27I think it will fit in beautifully there, and I hopefully will turn a lot of heads.
02:31Well, I'm sure it will.
02:33A rack top semi four split window, this is such a cool car, and it's so nice.
02:37It's a nice driver.
02:39It's not over restored to where you would be scared to drive it.
02:42Right.
02:43And it's got some really cool stuff.
02:44I mean, just the details in the interior, I mean, the carpet, the colors.
02:47It's a cute little car.
02:48It's got all the right structure.
02:49Mm-hmm.
02:50We just need to fill in some blanks there, like the third digit missing from the horsepower.
02:56You're right.
02:57Yeah.
02:58You're right.
02:59Awesome.
03:00We just want it to have a really nice ride, give it a little more oomph than what it has
03:05right now.
03:07These old cars like this, they stop, but they don't stop awesome.
03:09Right.
03:10Make sure that it's safe and make sure that it can drive down the road straight.
03:13Anybody can get in it and enjoy it, but it definitely could use a much better transmission
03:18with synchros, so it doesn't grind downshifting.
03:19Great.
03:20I'll probably change out the front suspension, but I think we also should upgrade to a 12 volt
03:25system, because the radio does not work.
03:27Mm-hmm.
03:28So cool, that big unit.
03:29Right, right.
03:30I think that we should leave that, because it's so rare.
03:32I mean, look how cool that looks in there.
03:33Oh, yeah.
03:34Yeah, I wouldn't want to change that.
03:36So I think what we do is let's leave that, but I'll just hide like a Bluetooth audio system
03:39in here.
03:40Oh, great.
03:41So it's just all on your iPhone.
03:42Would that work for you?
03:43That works perfectly.
03:44Awesome.
03:45Awesome.
03:46I wish it was going to go home with me when it was...
03:47Well, you know what?
03:48I'm going to drive it a couple of times.
03:49You should.
03:50I'll have to shake it down.
03:51You should.
03:52We're going to take it to Florida, ride it along the beach.
03:54We just want it to have a little more modern appeal.
03:58We love the color.
03:59I love the interior the way it is.
04:01I wouldn't change anything on that.
04:03This should be a pretty easy build, because we're not tearing the whole car apart.
04:06We're going to take the bottom of the car out, suspension-wise, and drivetrain,
04:09but other than that, the body and paint's already done, so that just sped all of this
04:12up a little bit.
04:13We'll give it a buff after we're done and call it Fonzie.
04:15Wonderful.
04:16Awesome.
04:17I can't wait to get going.
04:18You're very welcome.
04:20Thank you for letting me play with your car.
04:21This is going to be awesome.
04:22You know, even though we're not going to go to the moon on this car, I don't think
04:25we really need to, but it's going to be bitching.
04:28You know, I've been around the Volkswagen block so many times.
04:33I've had a great time building each and every one of them, whether it was a bus, a double
04:37cab, a Karmann Ghia, a Beetle, a Hebmuller.
04:40Now, I've got a 53 split rag semi-four bug.
04:45It just needs some mechanical updates.
04:47So Linda's 1953 split window just showed up, and I'm so stoked to get working on this
04:52car.
04:53Kevin's not the biggest fan of Beetles, but I'm going to give him a little bit of time
04:56to get a little bit more acclimated to the fact that we are going to build this one.
05:00And while he's doing that, I'm going to dig in deep.
05:03And then that whole Speedo cable should pull right out the back.
05:06That's all it does is hook onto this and spin the speedometer cable.
05:12I love how simple VWs are.
05:14One cable to the wheel for the speedometer.
05:16You know, as simple as these are, why does it seem like I'm always doing all the work?
05:20We're going to put a new transaxle in it, new engine.
05:23Dave's got a midline hot rod motor for a Volkswagen ready for it.
05:26These cars are so simple.
05:27All you need for an engine swap is a jack and a buddy, and maybe a case of beer to split.
05:32Four bolts for the motor, four bolts for each axle.
05:35Dave has put together Legos that are more complicated than this.
05:38Probably what he's doing right now, actually.
05:40We're going to rip this stock beam out.
05:42So the beam that we're going to put on it is a little bit narrower.
05:45So it allows us to get the wheel up in here to have the car at a lower stance.
05:50Linda's big list is basically to make the car a lot more safe and a lot funner to drive.
05:57We want to take away the six volt and add 12 volt, make it a lot more reliable.
06:01We want to put some tunes in this thing so you can enjoy the ride.
06:04We're not painting it.
06:05We're not redoing the upholstery.
06:06We're just wiring it, doing the engine, and maybe a couple things, and then that's that.
06:11I'm an important person.
06:12I have important things to do.
06:13I'm going to give my last advice to the boys, and I'm going to let them have at it.
06:17It's a Volkswagen Beetle.
06:19It's simple.
06:20What could go wrong?
06:21Do you tear her up?
06:22All joking aside, we're going to tackle this thing.
06:25First up is the front beam.
06:26We're going to put a new one up that's fully adjustable.
06:29Once Cole gets a couple things out of the way, this thing will fall right out.
06:32There's some Volkswagen guy somewhere watching this.
06:35Well, if you went from this side.
06:38You know how I know you're an amateur?
06:41Come on!
06:42There's not really a right way or a wrong way to do this.
06:46Just try to keep everything intact.
06:48That's the move.
06:50Yeah, buddy.
06:51There might be more than four bolts, but this isn't the most engineered wazoo design thing
06:57that we've ever worked on.
06:58It should be simple once you get everything out of the way.
07:01Yeah, no, it looks super simple.
07:07There's not a lot going on here.
07:09I think it's just these four bolts and then the rest of it comes out.
07:13It should just fall out.
07:15The strategy is to get all these loose and then grab a jack stand and a buddy.
07:26I think this thing is going to fall.
07:28As the chunks of paint are falling down into my face, I'm kind of wondering if any of this
07:33is still lead based.
07:34It tastes like my old playground.
07:38Bill, what's the jam for dropping this beam?
07:44The shaft stays in the car.
07:46The box and the joint come with it.
07:48So you have to get that completely disconnected.
07:50Okay.
08:01All right.
08:02Yes, loose.
08:03Right now, the shaft's awesome.
08:05Come out, so it's going to be heavy.
08:06Yeah, I'm ready.
08:08Bring the fender.
08:09Put it under.
08:19I'm not sure why this isn't chopping out.
08:21Duck on the top.
08:26Okay, hold on one sec.
08:28Okay.
08:29I'll try and go down with it a little bit.
08:31Nope.
08:32Looks like there's another bolt up top.
08:33I think you're right, Bill.
08:34Bill says that the bolts are hidden under the spare.
08:35Seriously?
08:36Yeah.
08:37Wow.
08:38Look at this two more bolts.
08:39Holy .
08:40The mystery bolts.
08:41Hey, let's play more than you think you can get a tank up.
08:42Hey, let's play more than you think you can get a tank up.
08:51Holy , the mystery bolts.
08:54Hey, let's play a more than you think you can get a tank up.
08:59Then we got a rocket.
09:02We got a .
09:04What the hell is it now?
09:13Watch yourself, Austin.
09:14I don't want this thing to just let go.
09:19There's something else going on.
09:20Yeah.
09:21Something else is holding that.
09:23Yeah, it's hung up on multiple things.
09:35Holy , mystery bolts.
09:37There's something else going on here, boys.
09:39Yeah.
09:40Something else is holding that.
09:41So much for just four bolts.
09:42We can't see what's holding it in place,
09:44so I guess we're just going to start taking stuff off
09:47until it lets it go.
09:49Hopefully the whole thing doesn't come apart.
09:52Ah, ha, ha.
09:53Bring the thunder.
09:58Are your sides crashing?
09:59Yeah.
10:00Of course.
10:01Let me uncrash.
10:02Uh-oh.
10:03It is too tight.
10:04Now you get it.
10:05For the win.
10:06That's for it.
10:07Oh, hell yeah.
10:08Are you shaking?
10:09Oh, yeah.
10:10Okay.
10:11Let's slice.
10:12Uh-oh.
10:17All right.
10:18Let's see if this fixes our problem.
10:20Aim one.
10:23You .
10:26Uh, what the fuck?
10:30Why?
10:31What the fuck?
10:32Kevin's like, oh, dude, four bolts.
10:35It just falls out.
10:36Thank you, sweetie.
10:37I'm not mad.
10:38Like I said, I'm just disappointed.
10:42It's just about time to pull out the angle grinder.
10:45What do you think it is?
10:49We might have to get it.
10:50Oh, mama.
10:51Things are happening.
10:52Yeah, buddy.
10:53So I'm about to give up, but I think we found what we're hunting for.
10:56It's just like a weird bubble.
10:59I'm assuming its intention is to keep the beam from falling.
11:04She decides to go.
11:05I'll try my best to stop it, but no guarantees.
11:10Sorry.
11:11Go ahead.
11:12Put that anywhere.
11:13That's right.
11:14Dream to me.
11:15Mmm.
11:17All right.
11:18Are you ready?
11:19Let's see what happens now.
11:21Oh, look at that.
11:22Oh, wow.
11:23Science.
11:25Okay, so now we know.
11:26Make sure to take that thing out.
11:27Ew.
11:30And in three easy steps, you can have your beam out.
11:37Before the transaxle engine comes out, I'm taking everything off.
11:45So for the horsepower, or the business end, as we say on this car,
11:47we're going to go over and visit my good friend, Eric Allred.
11:49He's built lots of motors for me over at Ready Motorsports.
11:52I'm going to order a badass motor that's going to be reliable with a lot more horsepower.
11:56Hey, Eric.
11:57What's going on, man?
11:58How's it going?
11:59Good, man.
12:00How you been?
12:01Good.
12:02Don't know what your schedule is, but I've got a special project I'm building for some really good friends of mine.
12:04A 1953 Split Window Rag Semaphore.
12:06Oh, nice.
12:07Beautiful car.
12:08Crappy motor.
12:09These cars originally were built with about the capability of going 60 miles an hour, at best, downhill.
12:16We're going to go ahead and fix that problem right away.
12:18It isn't even a pea shooter.
12:19It's more like a spitballer.
12:21Inside and outside of this car is really done nice.
12:24Nice driver.
12:25But I need a lot more horsepower than this thing's got.
12:27It won't get in the gutter without having to bring up the R's.
12:29Right.
12:30What would you suggest?
12:31I want reliable with a little more kick.
12:34Just something snappy to keep up in traffic a lot better.
12:36Something great in traffic, absolutely.
12:38Well, you know, one of my favorite combos right now just for good street engines, you know the old school combo?
12:43You're from back in the day.
12:44The 2110 was everywhere, right?
12:45Sure, sure.
12:46The one I like that's very similar but different is a 2109.
12:50Eric has such great knowledge of building engines.
12:52He's done a lot of them for us and, of course, a lot of them for other people.
12:55I completely trust him.
12:56I don't know what the hell the 1cc means.
12:58I don't care.
12:59As long as it gets down the road and rides the wheelie, I'm in.
13:02Okay.
13:03It's a shorter stroke but a bigger bore.
13:05And a larger bore, you can do more chamber shaping in the heads and you can run bigger valves.
13:09You can get more power.
13:10A lot of builders have their own favorite recipes and this is mine.
13:13I just want it fun to drive but I want it reliable.
13:15Yeah.
13:16I want it to stay cool.
13:17So, 2109.
13:18Okay.
13:19Yeah, it's kind of not an old school combo but I love them.
13:23I think they work out great.
13:24How's your time frame?
13:25We're not too far out.
13:26We've got a couple motors to go.
13:28If you can just fit it in, I'm totally cool with that because I've got other stuff to do with it.
13:31Awesome.
13:32No problem.
13:33Put a build sheet together for me, son.
13:34Can do.
13:35Man.
13:36Got some cool stuff always.
13:37Always have a little rotation going through.
13:38Yeah, you know I've got a soft spot for these Volkswagens.
13:40That's right.
13:41I'm going to get out of here before some keys stick to my hands.
13:42All right.
13:43Sounds good.
13:44Thanks, buddy.
13:45Let me know.
13:46You bet.
13:47I've got a little VW engines, especially when you get stroking them and porting them out.
13:50They can generate a lot of temperature.
13:51You've got to make sure that the oil flow is perfect.
13:54And Eric has a perfect recipe for every one of these engines.
13:57We're going with an aluminum engine case.
14:00Oil flow is king.
14:01And you look at all these hard 90s that are coming out of the pumps.
14:04Every hard 90 in a fluid system is equivalent to the restriction of seven feet of line.
14:08So you figure, radius everything, get rid of all those restrictions, get rid of the turbulence.
14:13You've got your bearing halves, and it's like anything aftermarket.
14:16You're putting together four different brands of parts.
14:19How do you make sure those are all going to fit?
14:21Well, that's where it comes to do some Prussian blue on there, and you dab it around the hole.
14:26And then once you pinch the bearing, it'll leave an impression where something hits, like how they're going to line up.
14:31But once you've got all your bearings in, now we can pinch it down and see where that oil marking is.
14:36You can go back and forth on that, but on race day, man, you'll do some scabby stuff just to get in the race,
14:45because you've got rounds to go.
14:46You know, they're dumping the oil in the top, you know, before they put the manifold on.
14:50There's like mosquitoes and moths, and you go in, it's like, it's race day, man.
14:55You've got to go.
15:01So now we can see where the bearings are hitting.
15:05Where it goes into the galley feeding it, we actually do have that one centered.
15:11There's a lot of times you'll see that thing way off to the side, which is just less oil.
15:16I'll still take a small tool, and I'll open it up just to get more oil to the bearings.
15:21See how that's off center right there? That's not centered.
15:23So I'll machine that out, cut that out a little bit to fit that one.
15:26See, that one's pretty close, too.
15:28But I'll still open it up.
15:30Like I say, in my head, it's all about oil flow.
15:34There's something satisfying about, you know, you put together all these parts, and it all works, and you send them out the door.
15:40While Eric starts building our new engine for our 53 project, we're going to go back to the shop and get the old one out of there.
15:46The trans-axle in the back's a lot heavier.
15:50I'm not fighting that while it's up on the jack.
15:52I'm going to pull everything out first.
15:54It's the front beam.
15:55It was a little trickier than expected.
15:57Nothing goes perfect.
15:58Nothing goes as planned.
16:00Just roll with it.
16:04Yeah, like you said, it's just a four, right?
16:06Yeah, I believe so.
16:07Four and then the starter.
16:09So you should be able to just take those out and then get a jack under here and just wiggle it, and it should come down.
16:14It looks like there's a cable on each of these heater channels right here.
16:18So undo that.
16:20This is for the heater.
16:21That's how they use it.
16:22They just take the heat from around the exhaust and channel it up into the cabin.
16:27Yep.
16:28Germans.
16:29This is the whole cradle for the trans-axle on the backside.
16:32Once you get the engine out, you should be able to undo these two bolts and this one, and this whole thing should slide right out.
16:38It's super easy.
16:39Cool.
16:40You should be able to slide kind of the whole thing back and off and then out and down.
16:43There you go.
16:44Looks like you can still slide the engine off of the clutch.
16:47I think he said maybe?
16:49Like, he's figuring it out, too.
16:51Just kind of as we go?
16:52Yeah.
16:53I'm not sure.
16:54Easy peasy.
16:55Looks like you can still slide the engine off of the clutch.
16:59Like, he's figuring it out, too.
17:01Just kind of as we go?
17:02No.
17:03I'm not sure.
17:04Easy peasy.
17:05I'll just check in on you here and there if you need any direction.
17:08Obviously, if I'm not around, grab Bill.
17:10Yeah.
17:11Bill, like Dave, also has a love for Volkswagens.
17:14He's the expert in the VW field.
17:16Game on.
17:18So, Kev wasn't here for the front.
17:23And, like, I'll take his advice, but I don't want to get stuck under a thousand pounds of
17:27metal right now.
17:28I don't want to realize later that there's some bolt that I need to get to that we don't
17:33have access to now.
17:35So, my game plan strategy is everything's coming off.
17:45We're not going to reuse this old crusty exhaust, right?
18:00I don't think Kev will mind too much if I borrow his saws off.
18:03I'll take it off.
18:13I'm going to run up here doing this, or I can be underneath looking at the bottom saying
18:18up, down.
18:19When I'm there, things go as planned.
18:21Things go as smooth as possible.
18:23Watch and learn.
18:24Can I go down a little bit?
18:26Because I'm right up against this seal.
18:28So, I'm going to come down very slowly.
18:31Hold it.
18:32Hold it.
18:33There you go.
18:34Now we're past the seal.
18:35Okay.
18:36What are we hanging up on?
18:37What are we hung up on?
18:38Probably fuel line.
18:39No, fuel line.
18:40No, we're good.
18:41What are we caught on?
18:42I don't see anything up here.
18:43It's supposed to just drop out.
18:44Where are we at now?
18:45Downsies.
18:46Okay.
18:47Good?
18:48Yep.
18:49Yep.
18:50Good?
18:51Yep.
18:52Yep.
18:53Oh, yeah.
18:54Oh, yeah.
18:55Like I said, easy peasy.
18:57Now we're going to get it out.
18:58Oh, .
18:59Oh, .
19:00Oh, .
19:01There's not even enough room between the ground and the bug to get this out.
19:05Is that going to give us enough room to get it out?
19:06At least if we get it off the jack, then you can jack it up.
19:10Oh, .
19:11Oh, .
19:12Oh, .
19:13Oh, .
19:14Oh, .
19:15Oh, .
19:16There's not even enough room between the ground and the bug to get this out.
19:17Is that going to give us enough room to get it out?
19:18At least if we get it off the jack, then you can jack it up.
19:19Oh, they split on more of their spokes to re-weld them?
19:20Yeah, stop.
19:21What's the idea with that?
19:22Good?
19:23Yeah.
19:24Mm-hmm.
19:25We need, like, .
19:26That's it.
19:27That's all you got.
19:28That's all we got?
19:29Yeah, we're going to have to take it off the jack.
19:30Come back here, Cole.
19:31Me and Justin are going to lift up, and you're going to pull the jack out, and we're going
19:35to set it up.
19:36Yeah.
19:37Ready, steady, .
19:40When I say things are easy, you've got to be equipped.
19:55You know?
19:57You could have done that the whole thought, dude.
20:02This should be a stock 1.6, which is a 1600cc stock 1.6.
20:09Sock one barrel, makes about 35, 40 horsepower on a good day.
20:15Basically powers the car at maybe like 50 miles an hour,
20:17if that, on a good day downhill.
20:19There's something else pushing it, probably.
20:20Because they're actually kind of dangerous on the highways
20:22because they don't go that fast.
20:23It's too slow for the slow speed lane.
20:25The new engine probably has about 130 to 150 horsepower.
20:29So it's going to motivate it a little bit easier.
20:32And it's going to probably push it at least the speed limit.
20:35And that's exactly what the customer wants.
20:36Ah, the good old days.
20:38It smells like greasy-ass old Volkswagen.
20:41I love it.
20:45Eric has gone through and poured out and aligned
20:47all of the oil passages to make sure there's no obstructions,
20:50to make sure there's going to be lots of oil flow.
20:52But one of the biggest problems you'll
20:53have with the high-performance engine
20:55is you're going to need a lot more than two and a half quarts
20:56of oil.
20:57It puts it about that high up in there.
20:59You start sloshing that oil to one side,
21:01that two and a half quarts of oil runs out pretty quick.
21:04It goes off to the side.
21:05Or high RPMs, you know, as you pump oil up,
21:07it takes a while to drain down.
21:08So you're suspending that oil up.
21:10You start running a pickup dry.
21:11So you put a deeper sump on it.
21:13Give yourself another one and a half quarts,
21:15a little bit more depth.
21:16Now taking turns, hard acceleration, things like that,
21:19you're not going to have any trouble.
21:21So we make our own pipe.
21:23We'll cut it to the right thing.
21:24We'll fully weld it so it doesn't leak any air.
21:26So basically that pickup tube extension
21:28is going to come down into the sump right there.
21:30And we're going to line it up so that when that sump screen is in place,
21:33that pickup tube is going to go right in and just go right into the top of that.
21:38So we're using the factory screen still,
21:40even though we're going to have an external filter on this.
21:42Eyeball it twice, cut once, right?
21:50How about that's there?
21:52First try.
21:53Holy mack-a-roly.
21:55There we go.
22:11Not pretty, but it does seal it really well.
22:16And then you know that's lined up perfect for your screens.
22:18That'll make sure you keep all your oil flow like you should,
22:21and you won't suck any air around it.
22:24I just figure it.
22:32So it's kind of a press fit.
22:34You heat it up enough that you'll slide it right on down,
22:37and then it'll cool and grab right on.
22:41It's your hand, right?
22:42There we go.
22:43Yeah, it goes all the way down.
22:46Brass worms up a whole lot quicker,
22:49so you got to be a lot more careful with it.
22:51There we go.
22:53There we go.
22:58There we go.
23:05Last little key way to go in.
23:11There we go.
23:12Perfect.
23:13Now we've got all our gears, our bearings are in place.
23:17We'll let that cool a little bit.
23:18Start hanging some rods on it.
23:20You see it all in all the VW pages.
23:21Everyone shows video of their rods dropping.
23:25But it is gratifying to watch your connecting rod just sweep down like it should.
23:29You see it all in all the VW pages.
23:30Everyone shows video of their rods dropping.
23:31But it is gratifying to watch your connecting rod just sweep down like it should.
23:36You see it all in all the VW pages.
23:37You see it all in all the VW pages.
23:38Everyone shows video of their rods dropping.
23:41But it is gratifying to watch your connecting rod just sweep down like it should.
23:46Grease, we are set.
24:07Eric has double checked and triple checked everything and now it's time to go back together one last time.
24:11May.
24:16There we go.
24:19Here is how you make the V8 guys jealous of building the VW motors.
24:24Their stuff is too heavy.
24:26And we like where that rotor points.
24:29We are set.
24:47You can tap it all the way down with your hand.
24:50You haven't pinched a bearing.
24:51All your dial pins are where they should be.
24:53So let's pull out.
24:54And you can put a family completely over here.
24:55You can walk over it.
24:56Okay."
24:57So the using this is to check valvetrain geometry.
24:58So let's just measure how much lift the cam actually has.
25:15Actually has and then we'll go to half lift and we'll see where everything lines up
25:20About 202 is half lift. I'd like to see that kind of in a
25:27Sweet neutral spot on the valve train
25:39There we go
25:45This little black bug is definitely not easy. It's thrown us some huge curveballs
25:50We pulled everything off before working on the transaxle
25:53We're upside down, aren't we? No, let's go to the front of the car
25:56We got the engine back from ready motorsports
25:58But we have to get the transaxle installed before we can make that happen coming in. Is there a mount or something?
26:04Yeah, the two studs slide through that. I left it all loose so we can I see I see so this is a pretty simple alignment
26:10There's really only one way for it to go in keep going out
26:13Yeah, all right, go ahead
26:19Up a little more
26:21Right now. Yeah, she'll be able to push it all the way in to the ship that's right lined up right now. Yeah
26:27Hello
26:30Well, we're we still got a ways to go
26:36Okay, there you go
26:39There you go boys
26:41I think I need some wigglage try to lift your side up bill and pull down on yours that axle
26:56I'm already all the way down. It's got to go down on your side
26:59Oh
27:01There we go
27:04180
27:05Where are you?
27:06Yeah, 180
27:06The other way though
27:07The other down
27:09It go down
27:12There you go. Okay, that started
27:13All right, we're good then?
27:14Yeah, we're good
27:15Cool beans
27:16We put trans axle in the bug
27:20We are winning we're gonna assess the situation probably take lunch
27:25And then put the the new motor in the new engine just arrived in this beautiful and I cannot wait to fit it in this little body
27:32Well, let's grab a jack when we do it that way it uh
27:41Jeepers must be your song
27:46Um
27:47So this engines a little bigger than the one we pulled out dog thinks he can bench press it
27:53So maybe we ought to try that before we go ahead and start using trans jacks and stuff. Oh
27:57Uh, okay
28:00Those air cleaners might not fit on paper. This thing fits, but it clearly isn't fitting
28:07Well, if they don't fit valve covers all that stuff. I don't the valve covers sit below it. Yeah, valve covers look clear
28:14We ought to grab the tape measure and just look at this before we
28:18Put a manhandle with it. Kenny is saying we should measure before proceeding. This isn't Kenny's style. Hey, but I like it
28:25Well, we're not gonna play the front to the back
28:27It's not even close
28:31It's gonna hit right here. Uh, we're nowhere close to the air cleaners. I don't see the front of it
28:36Can't get the cover on ass
28:39Maybe if it was all in there and stuff, but
28:43That's what I was saying is like if it went through the top all of this would fit, but then we've got this and then we've got this
28:50We got the engine back from ready motor sports
28:56But the guys here are having a little bit of trouble fitting that big ass motor in that little ass car
29:01We're just gonna have to we're gonna pull this off take the intakes off
29:05alternator and all that stuff off of it
29:07There's no other way this is all we don't have enough room to pull it out. So let's do that
29:14We're gonna have to pull off carburetors we're gonna have to
29:18Pull off engine cover alternator get all the stuff off the top end of the engine
29:23But we'll make it work. The factory engine is a lot smaller than this one
29:28Is that supposed to be like that?
29:30I don't know. Don't forget how it goes back together. I'll try not to
29:38That's easy
29:40Try to put it in now. I don't know how I'm gonna put together in the car. It's real close. It's very close. Yes
29:46Looks track. How much further we have to go up?
29:48Four inches or so six. Yeah, we're not good. That's not gonna work
29:55We know what's gonna fit. I'm just not sure how that's all gonna go together right now, but we'll get it
30:00Don't jostle it barely on the jack so don't move it around too much. It's pretty close aren't we?
30:04It's getting closer, but I don't know if it's hanging right on that
30:07It's hanging on the body. Well, I'm still moving it over here
30:11All you're doing is twisting it valve covers hitting on my side
30:15Yeah valve covers hitting on my side too. It's got a twist this way
30:18So the let's try to
30:22Try to what? I don't know
30:25How far is the input shaft sticking over? Probably a quarter inch on it and then we're
30:31What half inch from hitting the hole? You gotta get Bill's side of the engine back. I can't I'm against the floor
30:37Yeah, mine's hitting the floor right here too. The valve covers
30:41It's about drop in it
30:43If we pull the valve covers, we could probably get it in and then put the valve covers on after
30:47Yeah
30:51Can we go down just a smidge?
30:54Okay, that's good
30:57I'm extremely happy for Bill that this wasn't filled with oil input shaft good started
31:03Okay, maybe up a little more Austin
31:06Yeah
31:10Engine's okay hold. Well, there you go. It's in
31:18I guess
31:20So this engine was built and run with a regular doghouse, but i'm going to actually upgrade it to a porsche style fan shroud
31:27Typically on these porsche fan shrouds, we'll put a higher amperage alternator in these things to make sure that we can put a big stereo system
31:33And just make sure we have enough power to run it
31:35Hmm
31:37So
31:39We'll bring it to you
31:41That's pretty neat
31:45And if we can use the gala
31:49It's really a good idea
31:50That's a good idea
31:51Yeah
31:52Wait
31:53You're a good idea
31:55You're a good idea
31:57Yeah
31:58You're a good idea
31:59You're a good idea
32:00You're a good idea
32:00Maybe you're something
32:02We're almost finished up with Linda's Volkswagen, but there is one more thing that we want to
32:26definitely do, and that is to upgrade from 6V to 12V, so we can add our performance with
32:30the engine, as well as the electronics for the stereo system, the gauges, and so forth.
32:37Bill, what's up, buddy?
32:38How's this pizza German engineering going?
32:41German engineering is germaning.
32:43Is that good or bad?
32:44It's kind of bad, actually, right this second.
32:45I wouldn't expect anything less from a Volkswagen, honestly.
32:48I'm not disappointed at all.
32:49What's happening?
32:50For some reason, it dropped voltage at the LED flasher, and I don't know why yet.
32:56Does this have signals in the front?
32:58No.
32:58There's none in the headlights, huh?
33:00No.
33:00Okay.
33:00There's parking lights.
33:01Okay.
33:02The only ones that we have are the semaphores and the ones in the back.
33:05Okay.
33:05You have, like, a voltage drop?
33:07Through this.
33:08Through the relay?
33:09Yeah, so I have to see if I can swap it with another relay.
33:12Okay.
33:12And if that works...
33:13Then we should be good.
33:16So the semaphore doesn't go up and down, up and down.
33:19Do you have a taillight?
33:20No, that's the problem.
33:21How do you know?
33:23Because they're not flashing.
33:25I only have 4V at it.
33:28If I apply 12V...
33:29Let's see.
33:30It flashes.
33:31So you're getting some voltage here.
33:33Yeah, 4V.
33:35That's not enough.
33:36No.
33:37That's what I've got to find out.
33:38This power probe's awesome.
33:39Not only does it work as a test light, but you can also send power and or ground.
33:44Looks like 12V is leaving the relay, but only 4V is getting to my taillight.
33:48Something is wrong here.
33:49It probably has something to do with a negative ground issue.
33:53It might, but I replaced all that stuff.
33:55It might be a bad flasher.
33:57Yeah.
33:57Maybe there's not enough load on it because we've got LEDs.
34:00Well, it's for an LED, and it has battery voltage to it.
34:04But regardless, obviously of the small problem that you have, it looks like we're making really
34:09good progress on the car, yeah?
34:10Yes, everything else seems to work okay so far.
34:13Heck yeah.
34:13Well, hopefully it's just that simple.
34:15I hope so.
34:16Yes.
34:16Cool.
34:16Well, I probably won't be doing the test drive, but...
34:19Come on.
34:20You want to drive this thing?
34:21I mean, maybe.
34:22Is it fast?
34:22Faster than stock.
34:26Faster than 25 horsepower?
34:2940.
34:29We're really shooting for the moon on this one.
34:31It might do above 40, yeah.
34:33Okay.
34:34Well, I'm excited.
34:35I'll probably...
34:36I might drive it.
34:37I might ride it.
34:37Who knows?
34:38But I think it's cool, and you know what?
34:39The customers for this car couldn't be better people, so I'm excited to give this to them.
34:43Yeah.
34:43And I'm going to leave you to that.
34:45I'm going to leave you now.
34:46Good luck.
34:52Solid power.
35:08That is a regular relay instead of an LED relay.
35:15An LED relay has a resistor in it, which makes it blink, whereas a regular relay just sends power.
35:22So I know that by putting a regular relay in it, I know my wiring's good.
35:26I have 12 volts back to it now, so I have a bad relay.
35:31Just got to get one now.
35:33Bill, you're going to go rob something out of Dave's car?
35:35I'm going to rob it out of his wiring kit, yes.
35:39Then if I know that it's good, I can just order one.
35:42Well, it's not a bad relay.
36:04It's not the relay.
36:07We've got one more idea.
36:10For some reason, if I check the hazard, it actually flashes.
36:16When Bill injects 12 volts to the hazards, the taillights come on.
36:20It's time to rob from Dave again.
36:22So I'm going to put this in the flasher and see what happens.
36:24Hey, success.
36:35Blinks at a different pace, but it still blinks.
36:41It's a fabulous day.
36:43You know, this isn't a typical build-it-can-digit design.
36:45We didn't, like, go ham, take the car all the way down to bare metal,
36:48reupholster it, chop the top, do any of that kind of stuff.
36:52And it is just a sweet little ride.
36:55I am impressed.
37:01It's a fabulous day.
37:03I am excited to see the car finished.
37:06I am excited to get in the car and to really drive it for the first time as is.
37:11And it is just a sweet little ride.
37:14Oh, wow.
37:17This is, yes, look at this!
37:19I knew what it had before, and I knew we could just about take it on the main road of the
37:24beach at that speed, so, you know, I'd hope to get a lot more pep in it, and it's exactly
37:29like I would have expected, so I'm thrilled.
37:32Nice and smooth.
37:33Very smooth.
37:34Got a little bit of, a little bit of attitude.
37:37I am impressed.
37:38You could feel the suspension.
37:40It's just an, it's an easy ride.
37:42It's a comfortable ride.
37:43So, that was another thing I really didn't expect.
37:46So, you have all of the creature comforts of 1953.
37:54I cannot believe it has power.
37:56I love it.
37:57And I love, I mean, I really never would have expected to have a sunroof.
38:11Hey, thank you.
38:11You did a great job.
38:12Oh, thank you.
38:13I'm so excited.
38:14Thank you very much.
38:15I'm, I'm very excited that I got to work on this car.
38:18Oh, good.
38:19Good, good, good.
38:20I didn't really know what to expect, you know, until today.
38:24Now I see what a great car we have, so.
38:27Oh, my God.
38:28Oh, Dave.
38:29I have got one happy client.
38:31Linda loves her car.
38:33Isn't that cute?
38:33This is fun.
38:34You look great in here.
38:35I love this.
38:35This is totally, I love that shirt in this car.
38:37It actually, like, did you do that on purpose?
38:39It totally matches the German motif.
38:41I love this.
38:43A lot of people, you know, you get used to modern cars and it just, they feel different.
38:47Oh, yes.
38:47And when you're in a classic Volkswagen like this, it's more visceral, I guess, is the best
38:52way to describe it.
38:53I agree.
38:53You know, you're, you're, you're jamming gears.
38:55You're feeling a little bit more of the bumps and stuff.
39:02Oh, this is fun, Dave.
39:04We're going to have fun with this.
39:11All right.
39:16Cool.
39:17How fun is that?
39:19That was wonderful.
39:20I love it.
39:21Oh, my God.
39:21Right?
39:21I just love it.
39:22So much fun.
39:22So the things that we really had to kind of pay attention to the car because, I mean,
39:26it was all there and it was drivable, but it just didn't have a lot of power.
39:30So under the bonnet here, on the business end of the deal, we had to put some horsepower
39:36to this thing to actually get it to where it would actually merge into traffic.
39:39And so putting about 150 horsepower down, this is a 2109.
39:43So it's a much bigger engine than the 1100 cc's.
39:46This is like a thousand.
39:47It's about double the size of the Porsche Vance Road.
39:49I just love those.
39:50I put one of those in my car as well.
39:51I've been doing that on a lot of the cars.
39:52They cool really well.
39:54They look so much cooler than the standard ones.
39:56Looks great.
39:57Yeah.
39:57And then we put a nice transmission in front of it.
39:59Basically, it's a freeway flyer, a lot smoother shifting as you felt.
40:03And we put adjustable spring plates in the back, disc brakes in the back.
40:06And then we also did disc brakes up front and did the 12-volt conversion and the stereo system.
40:13He actually kept the radio as it looked in the period.
40:16I think it looks right.
40:17I'm very happy with the way that turned out.
40:20There's a new sound system in it that is Bluetooth.
40:23That will also be exciting to have the music on the beach.
40:26I mean, it's just kind of really cool.
40:27One of my favorite parts, though, is the rarer, the rare.
40:31And that is the semifores with a split and a rag.
40:33Yes.
40:34Did you see them, actually?
40:35Or were you just driving and you didn't get to see them?
40:36No, I didn't really get to see them.
40:37Hang on. Stay right there.
40:38You've got to see how cool they look from the back side of the car.
40:40All right.
40:40They're so cool.
40:42Isn't that cute?
40:43Amazing.
40:44I said cute.
40:46And I meant it.
40:47I just, I love those.
40:48I could stand here all day, Linda, and just do that.
40:51Just playing with my semaphore.
40:52Okay.
40:54You know, and of course, when you look at the car, the stance.
40:57I mean, we didn't really change a whole lot of anything on the outside
41:00because it had such cool wheels and tires.
41:02Everything was already kind of stocked and restored.
41:04But I did end up changing.
41:05I went to a smaller tire up front, so we had a little bit more turning radius
41:07because I wanted to get a little bit more stance to it.
41:10We still got tons of ground clearance.
41:12It's not slammed.
41:13It rides nice.
41:14And I just call it the full package.
41:16Oh, my God.
41:17I love it.
41:17I love it.
41:19How did you like driving it?
41:20Oh, I love driving it.
41:21I mean, I was, actually, I was quite surprised.
41:24Yeah.
41:24It's really got, you know, some power, and it just, it feels great driving it.
41:27Yeah.
41:28So, I'm happy.
41:29Well, we'll get it out on some more roads and go a little faster and see what you think.
41:32All right.
41:33Awesome.
41:34Let's do it.
41:35Let's get out of here.
41:36Okay.
41:37When Linda got behind the wheel, it was smiles galore.
41:40We had a great time.
41:41We're driving along.
41:42She picked it right up.
41:43I love it.
41:44It was something, obviously, that you need to get used to if you're used to driving brand
41:49new cars.
41:50This is a little different.
41:51But once you get going, it's like riding a bicycle, really.
41:54It just goes.
41:55It had more power than actually I thought I would have felt.
41:59It was easy to drive.
42:01It was easy to maneuver, except there's no power steering.
42:06But other than that, fabulous.
42:09We're going to have a lot of fun with it.
42:11It's like a perfect car for the park.
42:12It is a perfect park car.
42:16I'm ready.
42:16I want him to ship it.
42:20Oh, I love this.
42:22Oh, Dave.
42:23I'm telling you, we are going to have so much fun with this car.
42:27I can imagine.
42:28You have no idea.
42:29There's so much fun.
42:33There's certain cars in the Volkswagen world that are just, those are like the cars to have.
42:39And a split rag has always been one of those.
42:41Oh, yeah.
42:42The bonus is the 7.4s is just that much cooler.
42:45I agree.
42:46That sounds great.
42:47It's not obnoxious.
42:47It does sound great.
42:49Sounds healthy.
42:50Oh, my goodness.
42:51This truly is the ultimate split window.
42:56It's got split window, rag top, and semi-fours.
42:59Cruising this thing in Florida down the beach is going to be awesome.
43:02I probably never expected to get a VW with a sunroof, so that was just an added bonus.
43:07That's just, that's just perfect.
43:11I have a bitchin' ride.
43:12I hope Dave gives it back.
43:14Linda absolutely loved it.
43:23I love Linda, and this is one bitchin' bug.
43:25I love Linda, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and this is one bitchin' bug, and
