And it's scratch n' sniff?
In March 2025, DC Comics released a one-shot Harley Quinn comic so unhinged it almost feels like a parody... except it’s genuine. Centered around Harley being cursed with uncontrollable flatulence by a villain named “Dutch Oven,” the issue quickly devolves into a bizarre mix of fetish fuel, scratch-and-sniff pages, and scenes that critics say reference inflation kinks and even James Joyce’s infamous fart letters. Despite some defenders praising its art and weird charm, most fans and reviewers were left questioning how this got past editorial, and whether DC Comics is leaning too hard into internet shock value. One thing’s clear, this comic stinks, and not just literally.

00:00How did this Harley Quinn comic ever get approved?
00:07The long-feared Harley Quinn flatulence comic has been unleashed on the world,
00:11and it's getting called out by DC fans for being unapologetically weird and fetishistic.
00:16The comic was announced back in December 2024 by writer Joanne Sterer,
00:20and quickly raised eyebrows for its bizarre premise.
00:22Essentially, the comic sees Harley Quinn get cursed with an uncontrollable,
00:26violent flatulence from a villainess known as Dutch Oven.
00:30Throughout the comic, she learns to control the gas and even embrace it,
00:33showing a true enjoyment of flatulence as the comic goes on.
00:36The comic, which purportedly includes a scratch-and-sniff page,
00:39inspired a lot of discourse leading up to its March 2025 release date.
00:43This included memes that warned people about its drop date,
00:46like this Colonel Toad meme that gained over 3,300 upvotes in a week before the comic dropped,
00:51or this meme posted on the day of its release that gained over 11,000 upvotes.
00:54One of the comic's alleged illustrators even responded to the backlash, writing,
00:58Hello, I am one of the illustrators for this, quote,
01:01Harley Quinn fetish comic, and I'm very displeased of all the backlash.
01:05We've worked very hard on this, and I would appreciate it if you guys would just give it a shot.
01:09Unfortunately, any hope that the comic might redeem itself with its content was dashed on March 26,
01:14when it was released to some rather stinky reviews.
01:17Writer Jackson Lucan of Batman News gave the comic a rough 1 out of 10 review,
01:21writing that the comic would have worked as juvenile gas humor for kids,
01:25but delves far too deep into fetish territory.
01:27In particular, he criticizes the way characters explicitly enjoy the smell of gas,
01:32and scenes that reference some very strange, very real letters written by James Joyce.
01:36Reviewer Chris Copland was a bit more generous with his review, giving it a 7 out of 10.
01:41In his review, he praises the art style and the, quote,
01:44great character development and thematic insight, concluding that it's meant to be dumb and weird,
01:48but it also has heaps of lessons and insights to offer.
01:51Others have pointed the finger at a portion of the comic where Harley Quinn uses Plastic Man
01:55as a suit to try to control her flatulence.
01:58At one point, she passes gas inside the Plastic Man suit and blows him up,
02:02which many have interpreted as a nod to inflation lovers, adding yet another fetish into the mix.
02:07The release of the comic has left many wondering who exactly this one-shot issue was written for,
02:12and how it ever got approved by DC Comics.
02:14It's now being used by some as an example of the downfall of the comic industry,
02:18which has been met with increasing scrutiny over the past decade.
02:20What do you think?
02:21Is this Harley Quinn comic just an example of the writer's barely disguised fetish meme,
02:26or are people taking it too far?
