00:00Today, Rupert and his friends set out to catch a burglar in Rupert Turns Detective.
00:30There's a million stories to be told, all the things that he's done. And he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.
00:44Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name. Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.
00:58Rupert is just finishing his breakfast when PC Growler arrives.
01:13Oh, come in, says Mrs. Bear. There's still some tea in the pot.
01:18Thank you, says the policeman.
01:21Uh, uh, might I have a word with you, Mr. Bear? he continues.
01:27Hmm, of course. What's the matter? inquires Mr. Bear, surprised.
01:32For PC Growler looks very worried.
01:35Well, uh, a number of burglaries have taken place in and around Nutwood lately, and, uh, he lowers his voice.
01:43It's all highly mysterious because all the clues point to Sailor Sam.
01:49What? Mrs. Bear is surprised.
01:52Well, he's at sea anyway, says Mr. Bear.
01:56Yes, I know. That's what makes it even more strange.
02:00Mr. Bear catches sight of Rupert.
02:03Off you go and play, he says firmly.
02:06Rupert goes out into the garden.
02:09But he doesn't feel like playing at all. He's much too concerned.
02:14Sailor Sam? Why should Mr. Growler suspect Sailor Sam of all people? he puzzles.
02:21This calls for some first-class detective work.
02:25Hello, Rupert! shout Bill and Edward from the gate.
02:30Oh, hello! Rupert's glad to see his friends.
02:34Will you come with me to Sailor Sam's house?
02:37But he's at sea, exclaims Bill.
02:41Precisely, my dear Watson.
02:43Oh, good. Are we playing detectives? asks Edward.
02:48No, we're not playing. We really are.
02:52Quick, jump into the chariot.
02:54It's a matter of life and death, cries Rupert urgently.
02:58Hey, hey, wait for me, puffs Podgy, last as usual.
03:03And the little pig tumbles higgledy-piggledy into the chariot and almost falls out again.
03:09Rupert, do be careful, complains Podgy.
03:13Sorry.
03:14Sorry.
03:15You see, Mr. Growler is looking for a burglar.
03:19And he suspects Sailor Sam.
03:21So we're going to investigate because I know why.
03:24Look! shouts Bill.
03:26There's smoke coming out of his chimney.
03:32Wowee!
03:33That's weird, says Rupert.
03:38They make their way quietly towards the cottage.
03:43And peer in through the window.
03:46And see... Sailor Sam!
03:50The man turns.
03:52And Rupert and his friends breathe a sigh of relief as they realise their mistake.
03:58It's a man they've never seen before, wearing Sailor Sam's clothes.
04:04So that's the burglar, whispers Podgy.
04:08Hot cheek, mutters Edward.
04:11Wizardy whizz, whispers the little bear.
04:15No wonder Constable Growler suspects Sam.
04:18Let's go and tell him, Bill suggests.
04:22No, replies Rupert thoughtfully.
04:26We'll need evidence.
04:28I know.
04:29We'll lay a trap and catch him ourselves.
04:32What a smashing idea, Bill whispers excitedly as they creep silently away.
04:39Now listen.
04:41We must take turns in keeping watch.
04:43And then we can follow him and catch him red-handed, shouts Bill excitedly.
04:48Shhh!
04:50I'll go on watch first, volunteers Bill.
04:54And he creeps back through the bushes.
04:57And so all morning the burglars kept under observation.
05:03For Rupert and his friends have no reservation about catching this wicked man who's posing as Sailor Sam.
05:10It's your turn now, Podgy, says Rupert, turning up on the little pig's doorstep.
05:16Oh, is it?
05:18The little pig doesn't feel all that keen.
05:21For he's eaten a very large lunch.
05:24Oh, come on.
05:26I'll give you a lift if you like, suggests Rupert.
05:29All right.
05:31But I feel so tired, says Podgy, yawning sleepily.
05:35Well, don't you dare fall asleep while you're on watch, warns Rupert.
05:41Podgy gets himself into a comfortable position, which is just right for seeing and not being seen.
05:48It's also just right for sleeping.
05:52Especially after a very large lunch.
05:55And...
05:56Wake up, Podgy, wake up!
06:02I told you not to go to sleep, cries Rupert.
06:12The cottage is empty too.
06:14You let the burglar get away.
06:16Bill is cross.
06:18I know, cries Rupert excitedly.
06:21Let's go and hide inside the house.
06:24And then we'll be able to catch him when he comes back with the loot.
06:27Oh yes, let's, cries Bill, making towards the cottage.
06:31Podgy doesn't agree.
06:33I think it's a rotten idea.
06:35He's big and strong and...
06:37And...
06:38All right.
06:39You stay out here.
06:40That would be better, Rupert decides.
06:42And as soon as you see the burglar coming back, run and fetch Constable Growler as quick as you can.
06:48Podgy approves of that idea.
06:50But don't go to sleep.
06:52No.
06:53I promise.
06:55Podgy is so relieved that he doesn't have to hide inside the house, that he really means it this time.
07:03This cupboard will do, says Rupert.
07:10Look, there's just room for the three of us.
07:13Why, it's full of Sailor Sam's souvenirs.
07:17Trumpety trumps, I wouldn't like those masks on my wall, declares Edward.
07:24Why, that gives me an idea, exclaims Rupert delightedly.
07:28There's a crack we can look through too, see, says Bill.
07:32As Rupert carefully pulls the door towards them.
07:37It's a bit like hide and seek, whispers Rupert.
07:41More like sardines, says Edward, who's rather squashed.
07:46I hope he doesn't seek us instead of we him, says Bill nervously.
07:50We'll all rush out together when I give the signal, instructs Rupert.
07:55Podgy is really on the lookout this time, and spots Sailor Sam's blue coat the moment it comes into sight.
08:01He's even more thrilled when he sees that the burglar is carrying a large sack.
08:06And in spite of the butterflies in his tummy, creeps quietly, very quietly, away from the cottage.
08:13The cottage door swings open, and in comes the burglar.
08:21Rupert, Bill and Edward hold their breath as they watch through the crack in the cupboard door.
08:26He tips up the sack, and everything tumbles out.
08:31It's Tiger Lily's father's conjuring equipment.
08:35The burglar picks up a box, and out pops a rabbit.
08:38Oh! exclaims the startled burglar, dropping the box.
08:42Now! shouts Rupert, and he, Bill and Edward rush out of the cupboard,
08:47wearing Sailor Sam's masks and making a fearful din.
08:56The burglar stands transfixed with fright.
09:00Edward trips over a box, and out pops a snake.
09:03This is altogether much too much for the burglar.
09:06Oh, help! Save me! Help!
09:08He shouts.
09:09He turns and runs to the door, straight into PC Growler's arms.
09:14Save me! Help! Save me!
09:16He cries.
09:19Rupert is excited, for Sailor Sam is coming home.
09:24And Mrs Bear has invited him to tea, so that Rupert and his friends can tell him all about the burglar.
09:31I want to thank you, because not only did you catch the burglar,
09:34but you cleared my name as well, he tells them gratefully.
09:39The conjuring tricks helped. He thought that snake was real.
09:43That reminds me. I've got a conjuring trick, says Sailor Sam, producing a large empty box.
09:49Look! It's empty, isn't it?
09:54Yes! Yes!
09:57Abracadabra, cries Sam, waving his arms over the box.
10:03And a whole lot of sweets come cascading out.
10:07Ooh! That's the kind of conjuring trick I do like, declares Podgy approvingly.
10:14It's much better than a silly old rabbit.
10:16Rupert!
10:17Rupert! Rupert the Bell! Everyone sing his name!
