00:00If you're looking to buy golf clubs, it can be an expensive venture, but it doesn't have
00:04to be.
00:05In this video, we're going to offer a bit of a second-hand golf club challenge.
00:09So I've been over at golf clubs for cash, and I've picked up three sets of golf clubs
00:13at three very different price points.
00:16On my right here, this set, excluding the bag, comes in at just under £2,000.
00:21The set in the middle here, excluding the bag, just under £800, and the set on my left
00:26here is just under £400.
00:28So hopefully we'll be able to give you an idea of the sort of things you might be able
00:31to get at different price points through the bag.
00:34Now, what I'm going to do is I'm going to hit a few shots on the launch monitors here
00:37at Edinburgh Indoor Golf, talk through what's in each of these bags, and then I'm going
00:41to take one set away with me, and I'm going to put them into play and see how I get on.
00:47Right, let's get started.
00:58Right, so I'm going to start with the set that comes in at just under £2,000, the most
01:14expensive set.
01:15We'll list out all the golf clubs and how much they cost if you get them from golf clubs
01:20for cash.
01:21So I'm going to have a quick hit with a couple of the clubs.
01:23So I'm going to start with the driver.
01:24This is the Ping G425 Max, so it's in the current family.
01:28It's now Dilla Torsion X shaft in it.
01:30So it's a good quality head, good quality shaft, and it's in very good condition as well.
01:35I love the way this golf club sits down behind the ball.
01:38It just feels really easy to hit, nice and forgiving.
01:41Let's see how we get on.
01:48Not my best swing, but not bad.
01:52I mean, that's gone, I mean, that's absolutely fine.
01:54If I was on the golf course, still on that tee, and I hit it 281 yards down the middle
01:58of the fairway, I would be delighted.
02:00Fairway Wood is the TaylorMade Sim 2 Max, and the Hybrid is a really interesting club.
02:06It's the sort of thing I would absolutely, definitely carry in my golf bag.
02:10It's a Callaway Apex 2, so 18 degrees.
02:14It sits really nice and compact down behind the ball.
02:17It feels really versatile and playable, and it's got a great grip in it, and it looks and
02:22feels as good as new.
02:23This is definitely the sort of golf club I can imagine carrying for sure.
02:28I've hit that pretty well, yeah, I mean, 232 for me with the Hybrid is pretty good, so,
02:41so far, so good.
02:43What about the irons?
02:44Well, I'm going to pull out the 8-iron.
02:46So, just to give you an idea, the irons that I currently carry in my bag are the Mizuno JPX919
02:53forged, and this is the tour version of that club, so these are slightly thinner in the
02:58top line, a little bit more, I guess you would say, intimidating to look down on.
03:02Obviously, I really like the way these look, but these do look a little bit more worn than
03:06the other golf clubs I've already hit.
03:09Let's give it a hit and see how we get on.
03:17Yeah, lovely feel, as you would expect.
03:20I think I've shoved that a bit right, have I?
03:23Yeah, but, I mean, 152 carry, 153 total, pretty good for me, so I'd be quite happy with that.
03:32And then there are three Miura wedges in this set.
03:34There's a 51, a 56, and a 60, and then a really nice Odyssey white-hot OG putter.
03:42It's not quite, but not far off as good as new.
03:46The grip could do with a bit of attention.
03:47I'd probably get a new grip put on this, but this is a putter I can definitely see myself
03:51using.
03:52So, there you go.
03:53Hopefully, it gives you an idea of what you can expect if that's the sort of money
03:56that you're looking to spend on second-hand golf clubs.
03:59Okay, set number two comes in, as I said, just under £800.
04:03But what would you get for your money?
04:05Well, in terms of the driver, you get a tailor-made SLDR 460.
04:10This is 10.5 degrees.
04:12It has the movable weight in the draw setting.
04:14I'm not going to move.
04:15I'm just going to hit it as it is, and it has a Fujikura speeder 57-gram shaft in it.
04:19It looks in really good condition, this driver.
04:22Whoever owned this before me kept it in really good shape, and it has nice, clean grip with
04:28plenty of traction.
04:29It's amazing what a new grip does to a golf club.
04:32Let's hit it and see how we get on.
04:41Not my best.
04:42A little bit right.
04:44But, do you know, 282 yards, it's on the fairway.
04:49It's not my best shot by any means, but it's okay.
04:51And I think for this driver, for coming in just over £100, I think that's pretty good value.
04:57Next up, we have the Ping G15 fairway wood.
05:01It looks fantastic.
05:02The next one is a tailor-made aero burner.
05:05For me, this is quite an interesting option.
05:07It's a 19-degree hybrid, and because of that white finish, for me, this one looks and feels
05:13its age a bit, because tailor-made haven't produced these white golf clubs for a while.
05:17Having said that, I like the way it looks down behind the ball.
05:19It looks generous.
05:20It looks easy to hit.
05:22Let's find out.
05:23Not quite the right shaft for me.
05:24I can feel it already.
05:26It's a regular effect, 70 regular shafts, so let's see.
05:35Oh, I've hit that right out the middle.
05:38Come on.
05:39Yes.
05:44I'd take that for sure.
05:46But what about the irons?
05:47Well, for the irons, we've gone for a set of Cobras.
05:50This is the Cobra King forged tech.
05:55So a nice forged iron, sort of mid-cavity, I'd say, a kind of real sort of mid-handicap
06:01as iron.
06:02I love the way these look.
06:03It's got a great KBS Tor-C taper shaft in it.
06:06Yeah, I've got the 7-iron in my hands here, so let's see what it's like.
06:11Yeah, these feel superb.
06:19Quite high ball fight, but plenty of distance, actually, on that iron.
06:23I would be happy to put these in the bag for sure.
06:26And then after that, I've got a couple of Cleveland RTX 3 wedges and an Odyssey White
06:33Hot Pro 7 putter, which is in really good shape.
06:36And I could see myself using this for sure.
06:39It looks really good.
06:40So that's what I would get if I was looking to spend around about £800 on a set of golf
06:45clubs.
06:46There's a lot of things in there that I'm not quite 100% sure about, but on the whole,
06:49that set, I think I could use that out on the course.
06:52But what about if I was paying under £400 for a set?
06:56What would I get then?
06:57Well, we've got the set and the driver is the Ping G2.
07:01If anyone watching this video has played any of these clubs, please do leave some small
07:05reviews below.
07:06We'd love to hear what you have to say.
07:07I remember when this was launched, it's a 460 degree head.
07:11It's got this sort of half moon alignment in the crown.
07:14Really simple looking, but I remember when it was launched and it really performed well.
07:18I really liked this driver when it first came out.
07:21It's got a Pro Launch blue shaft in it.
07:23It's 8.5 degrees.
07:25So let's give it a hint, see how we get on.
07:28Oh, I shoved it to the right, I think.
07:34Ball speed's not bad.
07:35161 is pretty good, and I've turned it over.
07:39That'll play.
07:41That total distance is comfortably the longest drive I've hit from any of the three sets that
07:49I've played, and that's the first and only shot I've actually hit with this Ping G2 driver.
07:53Very interesting indeed.
07:54The 3-wood is a Cleveland launcher, 13 degrees, and then there's a tight list 20.5 degree fairway
08:01wood.
08:02It's a 975F.
08:03I'm sure there are people watching this who have used this in the past.
08:07I may well have also used this in the past, but this is fairly old now, and you can tell
08:11when you set it down behind the ball.
08:12It looks really quite small, really quite intimidating, and it's got a steel shaft in it.
08:16So this is not the sort of thing I'm used to using.
08:19But let's see how we get on.
08:21That felt good.
08:22Ball speed's good.
08:27It's gone a bit left.
08:31It's gone a bit left, but it's gone quite a long way.
08:33You can see that smash factor is pretty good there.
08:37How confident I would be using this out on the golf course, I'm not sure.
08:42I'm going to hit the 7-iron from the set of irons, which is a Mizuno set of MX23s.
08:48It's a few years old, and this is in fairly well-loved, I'd say, condition.
08:55It's not the best condition, but it's not too bad, and actually, sitting this down behind
09:00the ball, a little bit of offset, quite large to look down on, but the top line isn't too
09:04thick.
09:05It's nice and thin, so it doesn't look too clunky.
09:06Actually, in terms of, for me, a game improvement set of irons, this looks pretty good, and again,
09:12as I said, it's got fairly new grips on it, so this feels quite good.
09:15Let me have a hit.
09:19I feel like I hit that well.
09:25I'm hitting this set probably the best, and again, that's gone a good distance for me for
09:32a 7-iron.
09:33Now, the wedges, I've got a tailor-made rack 60 and a Callaway forged 56-degree wedge, and
09:40the putter is, I believe this is an original ping answer.
09:45It could do with a new grip.
09:46It's got an Odyssey grip on it, but it's a ping putter, and this one would set you back
09:51£39.95.
09:54It's possibly a little bit short for me as well, but would I be able to use it out on
09:58the golf course?
09:59Possibly not, but that's not saying anything about the putter.
10:01That's more saying about my putting, I'd say.
10:04So there you have it.
10:05That's the third and least expensive of the three sets.
10:10Now, which one of these am I going to take with me to test on the course?
10:16OK, so welcome to part two of this video, and as you can see in front of me, I have the
10:25£800 set of golf clubs, and I'm going to put them through their paces on the golf course
10:30here.
10:31This is the international course at the London club.
10:33It's quite tricky.
10:34For me, a good score around here would be around about an 80, and my handicap is 2.7, so I'm
10:40going to keep the card.
10:41I'm going to see how I get on.
10:42In particular, I'm looking out for whether this set of golf clubs cost me any shots versus
10:47what I would expect with my own golf clubs.
10:50I will report at the end.
11:18OK, so round of golf finished.
11:33There was some good stuff in there.
11:35There was some definitely not so good stuff in there.
11:38So I shot a round of 82, which is definitely not a great score, but it's not terrible for
11:44me.
11:45The big question is, how many shots did this set cost me versus if I'd been playing with
11:50my own set of custom-fit golf clubs?
11:52And I think that really, there was only one occasion where this set of golf clubs cost me,
11:57and that was on the 12th tee.
11:59So the 12th tee is a par three over water.
12:02And I know that these irons are stronger than my set of irons, so I ended up taking one less
12:07club, hit it well, didn't make the carry, went in the water, took double bogey.
12:11I was a little bit frustrated as a result, but really that would be me getting used to
12:16the irons.
12:17Apart from that, I'd say on the whole, these clubs delivered the sort of results that I
12:21would expect, frankly, with my own set of golf clubs.
12:24There were a couple of occasions, both with the fairway wood and the hybrid, where because
12:28the shafts are a little bit too soft for me, that I ended up hitting shots that just turned
12:32over a little bit too much.
12:34A couple of other things to point out.
12:35Firstly, the putter is very short.
12:37This is about, I think this is 28 inches long, which is pretty short.
12:41But I think I probably hold more putts today than I would have done with my own putters.
12:45That's maybe an interesting finding for me.
12:47And the other thing is that there's only 12 clubs in this set.
12:51So if I did want to get it up to 14 clubs, I'd probably put another wedge in and maybe
12:56a four iron into this set as well.
12:57So that might edge me closer to that £1,000 mark.
13:01But I think the experiment has been a very interesting one.
13:04And for me, it's gone to show that if you don't want to go down the route of kitting yourself
13:09out with new equipment that might cost you a little bit more and you want to go down
13:13a cheaper route, this is definitely worth considering.
13:15But my advice would be that if you're a golfer who understands what specs they need, make sure
13:21that you marry them up as closely as you possibly can.
13:23That will make a big difference.
13:25If you're not, if you're new to the game, then try to find something that's as forgiving
13:28as possible.
13:29Probably shafts, I'd say regular shafts, just to give you that little bit of help through
13:33the ball is probably a good way to go and is a good starting point.
13:37Because it's good to know that you can get good quality brands that are going to be forgiving,
13:42they are going to reward you for the good shots that you hit and, as I say, let you get away
13:45with the odd missed strike from time to time.
13:48But there you have it.
13:49That's it for now from The London Club.
13:51Thank you very much for watching.
13:52If you do have any comments, please do post them below.
13:54Be really interested to hear what you have to say.
