Dr Chee Soon Juan contested in the now defunct Bukit Batok SMC by-election in 2016. He returned to contest in the 2020 General Election. Now that the SMC has been folded into the new Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC, SDP’s Chee Soon Juan says he has to “leave Bukit Batok , and [I] do it with a heavy heart.”

00:00I'm happy with what PAP has done in this area, so I'm sort of supportive, but I do welcome
00:14other parties here to see what they can do for us.
00:34That means that I have to leave Bukit Batok, and I do it with a heavy heart.
00:43You don't spend 10 years getting to know the residents, building up the community, entering
00:54the lives of the residents there, and then have it yanked away from you with the stroke
01:00of a pen, without feeling that void.
01:03As I said, you know, assuming that elections are called in May, we've got about what, seven,
01:10eight weeks.
01:11And today, as I said, it's just the first taste of what residents here can expect.
01:26I probably will go and attend some of his talks.
01:32Let's see what he says.
01:33I would probably agree with some of his manifesto, and yeah, I will support those that meet my
01:40needs.
01:41Sometimes me and my friends, we meet up.
01:42All we talk about is cost of living, and it's worrying, because we should be focusing on
01:47living our life, being happy, but yet here we are, just focusing on how expensive things
01:51are, and how it's a struggle to live here.
01:54I'm not choosing any sides yet, nearing towards the days where all the parties have said what
01:58they are willing to do, and I hope they mean what they say, so I'll just go from there.
