00:00surrogacy in a nutshell means legally hiring a third party female to conceive
00:06and carry a baby till term if possible and then deliver and hand over the baby
00:12to you. Remember that's absolutely false. The type of surrogacy that is practiced
00:21today is known as gestational surrogacy which means through the process of IVF
00:27your eggs and sperm of your partner are mixed, processed in a lab and a baby
00:34which is known as an embryo is formed which is then transferred to the
00:38prepared uterus of the surrogate which means neither your husband or partner
00:43would ever need to be in physical contact of so ever to get her pregnant.
00:51There are millions of couple who struggle from infertility due to reasons
00:56where the female are born without a uterus or have a uterus which is
01:01extremely deformed or small to actually carry a pregnancy till term. Apart from
01:07that there are couples in which females suffer from medical conditions such as
01:11heart disease, kidney disease etc in which carrying a pregnancy would be a
01:15life-threatening situation for them. Also a lot of females have tried multiple
01:21cycles of IVF have got tons of abortions all of which become eligible
01:27candidates for surrogacy and surrogacy has proved to be a blessing for them.
01:35There is a strict rule of recommendation and checklist that is provided to us as
01:42medical practitioners who practice surrogacy to follow before deeming any
01:47female healthy enough to become a surrogate which includes the age
01:51criteria for example 35 is the criteria above which no female could actually
01:57become a surrogate, number of children that she's had, she has to be married, she
02:02has to have a one living child. A battery of tests, checks, physical exams and
02:07counseling sessions are conducted before she's actually deemed eligible to go
02:13ahead and become a surrogate and these criterias and checklists are not only
02:17for the welfare of the couple but more so for the welfare of the surrogate
02:21herself.
02:25Remember there's no procedure in IVF or ART which is assisted reproductive
02:32technology per se which guarantees you 100% result. Also surrogacy is a solution
02:38for a uterine factor problem. Surrogacy would not help you if there are issues
02:43with your eggs or sperm of your husband. In that case you would have to evaluate
02:48yourself and find alternate forms of treatment.
02:54You will definitely have to be in touch with a legal expert and a fertility
02:59expert in your area to know what laws apply there. For example in India LGBTQIA
03:06relationships are still not deemed legal. So in that case you might still go ahead
03:11as a single parent but not as a couple. But the good news here is surrogacy can
03:16definitely help your community get a biological child of their own.
03:24Surrogacy is a tight legal binding contract. It is not just a verbal
03:30agreement in air. So no, an intended couple can never ask the surrogate to abort the
03:37child after a stipulated period of time and also can never abandon the child. In
03:42fact the surrogacy document is so full proof that if unfortunately something
03:47happens to the couple there is a provision in the document which is
03:50signed by the next of the guardians who will take care of the child in case of
03:55such calamity. So a child's and a surrogate's welfare is absolutely taken
04:00care of in a complete wholesome way in the contract.
