00:00like there was a sex phone sex scene so they would play it in a very overly
00:04sexual way like oh my god I'm loving this side this is so wonderful and I'm
00:09you know
00:14you obviously raised here went to a boarding school what were you like as a
00:19kid I mean for an actor we always think of people who are exuberant excited out
00:24there but you like the popular chick in school or what were you like when you're
00:29not at all I was I was very very painfully shy I I you know I grew up in
00:37a school which was this British school in South India at English medium school
00:41when I first got there I had a French accent because I was six years old and
00:45at home I spoke French so I used to say things like concombre for cucumber and
00:50you know people used to really make fun of that so I quickly like changed that
00:54and became very you know normal in the way I spoke or whatever and then you
00:59know my Tamil like sort of took a backseat as well because English was
01:03like cool and everything so there were all these things where I you know I was
01:07I think since a very young age trying very hard to just be be what I you know
01:13what everybody else wants me to be I was always quiet I was very you know shy I
01:18never really you know expressed what I felt and things like that and and I was
01:24I had braces for like five years so you know I had no chance with most of the
01:28boys and I think the the way that I used to protect myself was by being a clown
01:35by by making people laugh you know so that was my kind of barrier that was my
01:41way of you know making friends and not not really showing people my insecurities
01:46or what I was really inside. What was your first break you know when you when
01:50you auditioned for that? I went and did this audition for Dev D and the audition
01:56for Dev D was funny because I I got a call and they said yeah there's an
02:01audition for this this this and I saw the script and it was in Hindi so I said
02:08I'm really sorry you have the wrong person my Hindi is really bad I don't
02:12think I can do this so they gave me the script in English and I did it and ten
02:17minutes after I left their office I got a call from Anurag, Anurag the director
02:22obviously you know him and what they told me about the audition was that you
02:26know being it's the role of a prostitute and everybody who came for the audition
02:30either did two things one they judged the script and said oh this is just
02:35dirty and it's like it's it's pornographic I mean how can you make a
02:40film like this or they would they would think that playing a prostitute like
02:45there was a sex phone sex scene so they would play it in a very overly sexual
02:50way like oh my god I'm I'm loving this I this is so wonderful and I'm you know
02:55and actually somebody who's doing that on a daily basis who's who's you know a
02:59prostitute is not going to be she's probably gonna be doing other things you
03:03know this is like you know a call center call you know you know she's she's
03:08actually so she'll be like yeah yeah baby it's wonderful it's lovely and
03:11she'll be like on her computer or doing other stuff you know and that that for
03:15me was that's what I I interpreted as and that's what got me the role so yeah
03:20how do you prepare for a role oh I mean I I think I'm I'm just so over excited
03:32when I get a role that I I do too much work I believe in doing too much work I
03:37believe in just going out researching and digging and annoying my director and
03:42calling them up every day and saying what what else can I do tell me tell me
03:45should I watch some movies read some books do this do that I do my research
03:49and everything and I have way too much information which I'll never be able to
03:53use and then I let it all go when I come on set you know I I feel you have to be
04:00ultra prepared and then wait for the surprise you know just let things
04:04surprise you let the other actor surprise you or let your director tell
04:08you no I don't want you to do it in this way I want you to do it that way so yeah
