00:00uh madrid derby here atletico madrid real madrid a crazy finish
00:05to a game yesterday that you know some people watch some people not i think
00:09probably we should uh describe the ending as to what happened
00:12yesterday and what it could mean for the future of soccer and replays
00:16yeah there's a lot to discuss here because it was really a memorable
00:19finish um it felt like controversial at the time
00:23looking back on it maybe not so much but still a lot of debate about this so
00:27basically the game went to it's an awesome game
00:30two teams thrown haymakers it's one of those like
00:33high on intensity low on quality only one goal scored in the first minute of
00:37the game 25 seconds in nobody scored after that but it was
00:41really back and forth a fun watch it went to a penalty shootout between two
00:45teams that hate each other's guts and julian alvarez slips as he goes to
00:50take his penalty still scores somehow even though he
00:54slipped it was an absolutely awesome penalty he roofed it into the top
00:58corner suddenly there's a video review and
01:00they've disallowed the penalty because the video kind of
01:05shows that his plant foot as it slips barely contacts the ball before he then
01:11kicks it into the goal and the penalty taker is not allowed to
01:15touch the ball twice before another player does and the point
01:19of the rule is to keep the penalty taker from
01:22deceiving the goalkeeper with maybe one touch and then scoring
01:26or or to keep it from like if the if the penalty taker hits the post
01:30and the ball comes back out he is not allowed to then touch it again and put
01:33it back into the net so that's the spirit of the rule in this
01:37case it was completely unintentional but the goal is disallowed and
01:41atletico madrid lose the shootout by one highly
01:45controversial at the time because it was impossible to see on
01:49video whether alvarez's foot actually did touch the ball it was very
01:53inconclusive now it comes out later that uefa and
01:58other leagues have technology to uh detect touches on the ball
02:04whether it be a chip in the ball in other competitions or in this one
02:07they have 26 cameras that triangulate and use ai
02:11technology to track touches on the ball and body movements
02:15that's normally used for offside situations but in this case
02:19it detected two touches on the ball the penalty was disallowed
02:23now uefa has come out this morning with a statement that said
02:26hey we're going to discuss a potential rule change here which is really the
02:30debate that has ensued afterwards because it
02:34felt really harsh this was not on the spirit
02:37of the rule and to disallow the penalty entirely
02:40and count it as a miss felt harsh for the situation
02:44uefa has said we're going to review for instances of
02:47unintentional double touches you might consider
02:51they could rule that the penalty would be retaken
02:54rather than count it as a miss so that's sort of been the fallout it was very
02:58memorable very controversial and a really good game and something
03:02we'll remember for a long time maybe even because it could
03:05end up in a rule change
