00:00Let's get to the latest on the pitch in soccer.
00:02We bring in Kyle Bohn, of course, from Sporting News,
00:04talking soccer with us as he does weekly here on the show.
00:07It's great to have Kyle back.
00:08Back-to-back weeks, by the way,
00:09some exciting stuff happening in soccer.
00:12We'll get to the Champions League quarterfinals coming up,
00:15some Futures bets potentially as well,
00:16and the game between Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League.
00:19We'll have a preview of that.
00:20Hopefully we can get to all this, Kyle,
00:22but let's get started with the Madrid Derby here.
00:25Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid,
00:27a crazy finish to a game yesterday
00:30that some people watched, some people not.
00:32I think probably we should describe the ending
00:36as to what happened yesterday
00:37and what it could mean for the future of soccer and replays.
00:40Yeah, there's a lot to discuss here
00:42because it was really a memorable finish.
00:44It felt controversial at the time.
00:47Looking back on it, maybe not so much,
00:49but still a lot of debate about this.
00:51So basically, the game went to, it was an awesome game,
00:54two teams throwing haymakers.
00:55It was one of those high on intensity, low on quality.
00:59Only one goal scored in the first minute of the game,
01:0225 seconds in.
01:03Nobody scored after that,
01:04but it was really back and forth, a fun watch.
01:07It went to a penalty shootout
01:09between two teams that hate each other's guts.
01:11And Julian Alvarez slips as he goes to take his penalty,
01:15still scores somehow, even though he slipped.
01:18It was an absolutely awesome penalty.
01:20He roofed it into the top corner.
01:22Suddenly there's a video review
01:24and they've disallowed the penalty
01:26because the video kind of shows that his plant foot,
01:31as it slips, barely contacts the ball
01:34before he then kicks it into the goal.
01:37And the penalty taker is not allowed to touch the ball twice
01:41before another player does.
01:42And the point of the rule is to keep the penalty taker
01:46from deceiving the goalkeeper
01:47with maybe one touch and then scoring,
01:50or to keep it from like if the penalty taker hits the post
01:54and the ball comes back out,
01:55he is not allowed to then touch it again
01:57and put it back into the net.
01:59So that's the spirit of the rule.
02:01In this case, it was completely unintentional,
02:03but the goal is disallowed
02:05and Atletico Madrid lose the shootout by one.
02:08Highly controversial at the time
02:11because it was impossible to see on video
02:14whether Alvarez's foot actually did touch the ball.
02:17It was very inconclusive.
02:18Now, it comes out later that UEFA
02:21and other leagues have technology
02:25to detect touches on the ball,
02:28whether it be a chip in the ball in other competitions
02:31or in this one, they have 26 cameras that triangulate
02:34and use AI technology to track touches on the ball
02:38and body movements that's normally used
02:40for offside situations.
02:42But in this case, it detected two touches on the ball,
02:45the penalty was disallowed.
02:47Now, UEFA has come out this morning with a statement
02:49that said, hey, we're gonna discuss
02:52a potential rule change here,
02:53which is really the debate that has ensued afterwards
02:57because it felt really harsh.
02:59This was not on the spirit of the rule
03:02and to disallow the penalty entirely
03:04and count it as a miss felt harsh for the situation.
03:08UEFA has said we're gonna review
03:10for instances of unintentional double touches.
03:13You might consider they could rule
03:15that the penalty would be retaken
03:18rather than count it as a miss.
03:20So that's sort of been the fallout.
03:22It was very memorable, very controversial
03:24and a really good game and something we'll remember
03:26for a long time, maybe even because it could end up
03:29in a rule change.
03:30Yeah, and from sports veterans,
03:32I cannot even imagine the end of that one
03:35affecting people.
03:36All right, quickly, let's go to the Champions League.
03:38We've got the quarterfinals.
03:39We'll talk some futures here.
03:41We got a lot to cover here, Kyle,
03:43so I don't know that we'll have time for everything,
03:44but let's start off with Arsenal, Real Madrid
03:46and then PSG, Aston Villa, let's start there.
03:49Yeah, there's a lot of good games here
03:51as they usually are when you get to this stage
03:54of the competition.
03:55Arsenal, Real Madrid will be really, really fun.
03:57You've got two flawed teams here.
03:59Real Madrid do not look like they're at their best.
04:01They were really troubled by Atletico Madrid
04:04a number of times.
04:05They really were locked down.
04:06Kylian Mbappe was not very good in both legs,
04:11but Arsenal have a ton of injuries in the attack.
04:14They are currently playing a midfielder at striker
04:17and have for a couple of weeks now
04:19because they have no natural striker
04:21and very few options up front.
04:23So this will be a really intriguing matchup
04:25between two teams that are very good,
04:27but also flawed at this stage of the season.
04:30PSG, Aston Villa, PSG are maybe the second best team
04:34in this competition, which is not something we expected
04:37to say, you know, maybe around Christmas time.
04:40They didn't look at their best,
04:42but they have really turned a corner
04:44and have come through.
04:45Ousmane Dembele is a low-key Ballon d'Or candidate now.
04:50So that's gonna be, I think PSG take that pretty easily.
04:55It's really Arsenal, Real Madrid,
04:57the one that I'm looking at.
04:58And then also, you know, you can look at Bayern Munich
05:02enter as one, two on the other side of the bracket
05:06is one that I think would be really intriguing.
05:08Bayern Munich have been great this season.
05:10They're usually great in the attack.
05:11They pummel teams, enter very well-disciplined at the back.
05:16So you've really got a clash of strengths
05:19there in that matchup.
05:20All right, let's get to the Premier League
05:22and start off Sunday morning, 9.30 a.m. Eastern.
05:24Let's take a look at the odds here.
05:26We've got Arsenal taking on Chelsea
05:28with Arsenal as the home favorite, minus 125.
05:31Fairly big advantage here in terms of favorites there.
05:34If you take Chelsea, you get plus 360.
05:37My guess is Arsenal should win, but will they, Kyle?
05:42Yeah, this is a tough one because, you know,
05:44I mentioned Arsenal very, very thin in the attack.
05:47Chelsea are the same way.
05:49They lost Nico Jackson to injury,
05:51and nobody's really been able to replace him.
05:52Christopher Nkunku has been very poor in the attack,
05:55and Enzo Mareschia has tried so many things
05:59to get this team going.
06:00He's played a ton of players out of position.
06:02He's just tinkering all over the place.
06:03I'm liking the under here.
06:05The market kind of dumped the value
06:08that I thought might show up on the under
06:10because these are two teams
06:11known for scoring goals normally,
06:13but the market has sort of adjusted.
06:15I still like the under in this one.
06:16You can get it at about minus 120.
06:20I do like the value on Chelsea here.
06:23That's a very big disparity,
06:25and Arsenal have not been great over the past few months.
06:28They've just been very inconsistent,
06:30and I could see them dropping points here.
06:32Chelsea need this game more than Arsenal do.
06:35All right, fair enough.
06:37Final one, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona.
06:39Sunday afternoon, 4 p.m. Eastern.
06:42Barcelona, a favorite here, Kyle.
06:44We got about a minute to go.
06:45Who do you like?
06:45Yeah, Barcelona's the best team in the world right now,
06:48but you can never count Atletico Madrid out,
06:50especially at home, just like we saw against Real Madrid.
06:53They probably deserve to come out with that one with a win,
06:57and so you could really see them trouble at Barcelona,
07:00but it's hard to pick against Barcelona right now.
07:03You could get the over three goals here.
07:06I like the over three goals selection
07:09just to hedge your bet a little bit.
07:10You can get that one at about minus 120.
07:12Atletico Madrid play to their other team,
07:15and Barcelona score a ton of goals,
07:17so I think that one beats over.
07:19All right, Kyle, have a great weekend.
07:20Thanks again for coming on.
07:21Thanks, Craig.
