12 March - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Welcome to your afternoon update from the Met Office. Cold wind continues to
00:04blow and continues to blow some wintry showers around. We've seen a few flurries
00:09of sleet and snow here and there. Out to the northwest of the UK there's a chunky
00:14area of high pressure and that eventually will be building in. But for
00:18the time being we've got low pressure nearby and the winds going around that
00:22high drawing down the air from the Arctic. Hence why we have the chill.
00:26Plenty of showers packing in across the east and a clump of showers earlier on
00:30brought some sleet and snow across parts of southern England. Still a few flurries
00:34into the early afternoon mostly over the hills at lower levels chiefly of rain.
00:39The showers further north over northern England, southern Scotland, moving down
00:43towards the Midlands and parts of East Anglia. They will be a wintry mix so hail,
00:47sleet and mostly rain. But the odd flake of snow is still over the higher ground.
00:53It feels cold in that wind despite some good spells of sunshine across parts of
00:56western Scotland, Northern Ireland. Some breaks in the cloud across southern
01:00England and South Wales too. Seeing the temperatures climb up to nine, maybe up
01:04to double figures. But it's certainly a lot colder than it was at this time last
01:09week and those northerly winds while bringing a real chill to the east. Six or
01:13seven that's what the thermometer will read but it'll feel closer to freezing
01:17when you add on that brisk and chilly wind. Which will continue to feed some
01:21showers in across these central and eastern parts well into the evening time.
01:26And then as temperatures fall wherever we've got these showers it could lead to
01:29things turning quite icy as we go through the night and for first thing on
01:33Thursday morning. Further west many places staying dry and some long clear
01:37spells will allow frost across parts of western Scotland, Northern Ireland. Many
01:43towns and cities just about holding up above freezing but certainly feeling
01:47colder still first thing across the eastern. Temperatures dropping down below
01:51freezing in many rural spots. Which means these showers which will still
01:54have that wintry mix. Sleet, hail, a little bit of snow first thing in the
01:58morning. Making for some pretty icy conditions across parts of southeast
02:02Scotland and eastern England. The showers will develop again through the day. Some
02:06getting into the Midlands, perhaps parts of East Wales. A few more across northern
02:10Scotland. But a good part of Scotland, Northern Ireland staying dry tomorrow.
02:13Most of Wales as well. There'll be some breaks in the cloud revealing a bit of
02:17sunshine. The winds not quite as strong tomorrow but still feeding the air down
02:22from the north. So temperatures will again be below average and particularly
02:26on those North Sea coast when the showers come along in that breeze. It
02:29will again feel pretty chilly for the time of year. Highs of 8, 9 maybe again
02:34double figures where we see a little bit of sunshine. Still a few more of those
02:37showers drifting in. Some heavy ones possible. Still some hail and some sleet
02:42mixed in. And then things turn a bit wetter across the northwest during
02:45Thursday evening. But that high pressure will topple in to bring many of us
02:49plenty of dry weather into the weekend. For more on that you want to be watching
02:53our 10-day trends. Alex Berker will be recording that. That'll be available on
02:57Wednesday afternoon on our YouTube channel.
