00:00Zelensky hasn't banned Trump's TruthSocial platform.
00:08The internet is awash with false claims that Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has banned
00:13TruthSocial, the social media platform owned by US President Donald Trump.
00:18Images have appeared on other social networks such as X, purportedly showing screen grabs of
00:23users unable to access TruthSocial in Ukraine. It appears that both supporters and detractors
00:29of Ukraine have been spreading the message, with some commending Zelensky for banning TruthSocial
00:34and others accusing the President of restricting free speech.
00:38The claims follow a war of words between Zelensky and Trump,
00:41which began when the US President launched a barrage of inaccuracies against his Ukrainian
00:46counterpart, including that he was a dictator without elections and was ranking low in opinion
00:51polls. Zelensky responded by saying that Trump was living in a Russian disinformation space.
00:57Many of the posts claiming that Zelensky banned TruthSocial allege that he did so
01:01in retaliation against Trump's falsehoods. But they're yet another example of misinformation,
01:07because Trump Media and Technology Group, which owns the platform, has said as much.
01:11It's said that TruthSocial was never available in Ukraine,
01:14a statement which has been backed by the Ukrainian government itself.
01:18A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on X that Ukraine did not and
01:23could not block access because, unfortunately,
01:26the social network TruthSocial has never made itself available to users in Ukraine.
01:30Various posts sharing the false claims have already been community noted,
01:35linking to articles from other fact-checkers who have also debunked the allegations.
01:39Following Trump's return to the White House, he's repeated a number of untruths about Russia's
01:44war in Ukraine, many of which feed into the Kremlin's own propaganda.
