00:00Actually, they knew my voice and it was a little bit suiting to Andrew's voice, which
00:04is the character I'm playing.
00:05He's got a deep voice in the movie as well.
00:08Yes.
00:09So he said like, just say, hi.
00:10I said like, hi.
00:11He said, okay, you're Andrew.
00:18Good afternoon.
00:19This is Manjusha Radhakrishnan and I'm the entertainment editor for Gulf News.
00:23Today I have a very interesting guest.
00:25We all know the UAE movie lovers love a good Malayalam movie.
00:30But did you know, because of the love for Malayalam films, for the first time, a Mammootty's
00:35movie called Turbo is being dubbed entirely in Arabic.
00:40So the makers have roped in talents from this region, Emirati here, sitting right here,
00:47who gave the voice for actor Dilish Pothan in the Malayalam starrer.
00:52It gives me such pleasure to interview, of course, Ahmed Al Marzuki.
00:58Perhaps you can tell me, like, this is quite exciting for me.
01:00When I got the release, which said that a movie entirely dubbed, a Malayalam movie starring
01:06Mammootty entirely dubbed in Arabic, that's a milestone in itself.
01:10That really ticked you, yeah?
01:11It did.
01:12Actually, it ticked me.
01:13You know what happened?
01:14Actually, this is a surprise.
01:16I've never seen any Malayalam movie in my life.
01:18I've only seen, like, Hindi films.
01:20But when they called me that you have been chosen to do Malayalam, I said, I don't know
01:25Malayalam.
01:26I will not understand.
01:27How will I dub?
01:28They said, no, there's a script and everything.
01:30At the beginning, I was, like, skeptical.
01:32I don't know.
01:33I was, like, giving excuses.
01:36First month, then the teaser launched.
01:37They said, how do you want to be?
01:38I said, teaser launched?
01:39It means the movie's done.
01:40So why do you need me now?
01:41They said, no, no, we have your part.
01:42We will do, read only your part.
01:45I said, why do you want me?
01:46They said, because we want you.
01:48You're the child of Ahmed.
01:49Ahmed, please do come.
01:50I said, OK, let me go and try.
01:52And when I went, you know, it was like a studio.
01:54I've never been in my life in that studio.
01:56Mics.
01:57I was, like, OK, now I'm feeling the celebrity vibe.
02:00I was, like, mmm.
02:01Did you feel like a diva?
02:02I am a diva.
02:03I've always been a diva.
02:04But when I went, I was, like, they told me you are doing very well.
02:11Not one, not two, but three characters they have given me.
02:14So first of all, it's Andrew, which is by Dileesh.
02:18And then there was a chai guy.
02:19He's doing a chai for, like, five seconds.
02:21You do the voice for that.
02:23I said, OK.
02:24Then there was one more, like, the bus rider.
02:27Yes.
02:28Then I have done all three.
02:29But then I wanted to leave the studio.
02:31He said, no, Ahmed, come, come.
02:32One more role.
02:33I said, oh, my God, I'm tired.
02:34My voice, khalas.
02:35He said, no, this time you will play Mahmood's father.
02:38He's crying.
02:39I said, why do you want me to cry in there?
02:41He said, we want to test if you're a good crier or not.
02:44I did.
02:45And suddenly everyone was applauding.
02:47I was like, really?
02:48It was fun for me.
02:49It was very funny.
02:50But in the trailer, that scene, it is there.
02:53Only that scene of my double merchant, that guy is crying, that's the only scene they
02:58put in the trailer.
02:59No, of course.
03:00But Andrew, the big cast, is yet to be released.
03:03It's in the movie.
03:04Of course.
03:05He plays, in the movie, Dileesh Pothan, actor, Malayalam actor and director, plays Mahmood's
03:10manager.
03:11Yes.
03:12And that's where Ahmed comes in as well.
03:15How was it?
03:16How was the whole experience?
03:17I know you're not an experienced dubbing artist.
03:19They called you because you're an Emirati.
03:21Your language must be spot on as well and you have a good voice, right?
03:24Yes.
03:25Is that why they just called you, randomly they just called you?
03:29Actually, they knew my voice and it was a little bit suiting to Andrew's voice, which
03:34is the character I'm playing.
03:35He's got a deep voice.
03:36Yes.
03:37In the movie as well.
03:38So he said, just say, hi.
03:39I said, hi.
03:40He said, okay, you're Andrew.
03:42We want to give you the first dubbing choice.
03:45Do you want to do it?
03:46I said, I will screw it.
03:47He said, no, please do come in.
03:48Then I came and I was giving, I finished everything in three, four hours for the whole four characters.
03:54And it was an amazing experience.
03:55Yes.
03:56Everything is on my shoulder because the whole character is on my shoulder.
03:59And I really hope that people do like it, do connect with Andrew because he's very soft
04:03from inside.
04:04He's outside macho, but soft.
04:06From the inside.
04:07Why do you think there's so much love for Malayalam films here too?
04:11I know the Emiratis love a Bollywood film.
04:13I wasn't aware they were aware of South Indian as well.
04:16Is it much lesser?
04:17Is this their way of connecting to the Emiratis in this region?
04:21Actually, we have a lot of Asian people here from India, from Asian countries working here
04:27in our country.
04:28I think we have a great history with both of the countries since our great grandfather
04:33days, you know, in terms of export, import, gold.
04:36I think from that time, people have been connected to Indian peoples.
04:40But now since South is coming, because of their movies, we have seen like Bahubali,
04:44we have seen like, you know, KGF and everything.
04:47I think from that time, it has been influenced.
04:50I think a lot of people are asking me, Ahmed, why don't you review South films?
04:54You have to go and watch South films.
04:56It's amazing.
04:57I think from that, it has been a perception for all the Emiratis that they have to go
05:01and watch South.
05:02I think South is doing amazingly well.
05:05I think I am very proud.
05:07I think Bahubali kind of changed the world, you know, the entire, RRR, RRR, exactly, it
05:12went to the Oscars.
05:13Suddenly, there's a lot of interest in South movies, so your dubbing kind of makes sense,
05:18isn't it?
05:19Exactly.
05:20It's so timely.
05:21Exactly.
05:22And I think this is the most important thing.
05:23If you want to dub something, dub for something huge, something to be aware of.
05:27You know, I think with Mammootty's films, Mammootty is a superstar in South.
05:30Everyone knows him, of course, and his son, definitely.
05:33So I think dubbing that film in Emirati, it will give us more exposure for Emiratis
05:42to know more about South films.
05:43I think this is a door that we have opened for everyone.
05:46Right.
05:47Of course, of course.
05:48And how many days did you film for this, this dubbing?
05:50I'm not very familiar with it.
05:52Does it take days or does it just take...
05:53It takes a lot of days, but it really depends on how are you dubbing and how the voice is,
05:59how the technique is.
06:00I've never knew that if you want to have deep voice, you have to bend like this one and
06:05talk.
06:06Yeah.
06:07So they told me to do the Mammootty's father voice, you have to bend and talk from inside.
06:12That's how the deep voice comes out.
06:13The base.
06:14Exactly.
06:15But for me, for the whole four characters, it took me only three hours.
06:19That's it.
06:20So four characters you did, including...
06:21This is so funny.
06:22So they're like, you know, we need people with Emirati voices who speak the language.
06:27So yalla, let's make it a bust.
06:29I think everyone who has dubbed, they're all from UAE, they're Emiratis.
06:34And I think one of the most important thing that why we have dubbed this one, because
06:38we want to showcase to the people that, you know, we are connecting between two countries,
06:46you know, in terms of tradition, in terms of language, we are connected since very long
06:51time.
06:52And our role always support talented youth with, you know, with ideas.
06:57So I think with this, we have brought an idea and never been done a movie to be dubbed
07:02in Emirati to be released in cinemas.
07:04You know, this is all by us, by our initiative.
07:07So I really hope this one brings the other youth to generate their creativity and come
07:13with something new.
07:14Oh, that's amazing.
07:15And, you know, I was just telling you that I wanted to write a copy and meet the Emirati
07:18who dubbed four voices for the movie Turbo.
07:21It is a new thing, right?
07:23Never happened before.
07:24Did Mammootty come?
07:25You know, is he aware of this initiative?
07:28Is there a premiere?
07:29What's the scene?
07:30Actually, he came for the teaser launch when it was, I think, one month back.
07:34It was in Sharjah.
07:36And here and there, he came to the studio to see the dub.
07:39But unfortunately, I wasn't there because I was the last person to join the dubbing
07:43sessions.
07:44But he was there.
07:45He aware.
07:46And he also post about us.
07:47And he is and he always constantly calling when it's releasing, when the premiere.
07:52I want to know.
07:53I want to see the reception.
07:54So he is keen.
07:55And I'm very happy that, you know, they are accepting us.
07:57Oh, that's so interesting as well.
07:59Tell me about your background a bit.
08:01Like how did you get into this world of movies, this interest in watching?
08:04You said you were aware of Bollywood films, right?
08:07How did the love for Bollywood films or movies in general begin?
08:10So it was I was at age of six or seven years old when I started loving Bollywood.
08:15Now, that's because of my mom, because I remember I was sleeping.
08:18I was having a school next day.
08:20So she woke me up at eight or nine.
08:23He said, let's go to cinema.
08:24I said, what is cinema?
08:25Because I don't know what is cinema.
08:26I've never been to cinema.
08:27He said, you know, there's popcorn.
08:28There's food.
08:29I was a foodie.
08:30Come have food.
08:31I went there.
08:32The smell of popcorn.
08:33The huge crowd.
08:34It was like a circus.
08:35Then I saw Kalnayak.
08:36It was my first film.
08:37Sanjeeva's movie.
08:38Exactly.
08:39Nineteen ninety.
08:40Nineteen ninety three.
08:41That's for sure.
08:42And I saw the action, the dance, the song.
08:43I was like, this is my genre.
08:44And then I told her that please bring all the TV channels from India.
08:46And then from that, I started loving Bollywood.
08:47And now, whenever I watch Bollywood films, of course, definitely I don't watch any subtitle
08:48because I know everything.
08:49I also can somehow take my friends from here, like Emiratis.
08:50They don't understand.
08:51I tell them, this happened.
08:52This is what's happening.
08:53They say, OK, Hamid, just stop.
08:54I want to see this scene.
08:55But it is on me that I want to teach people about Bollywood.
08:56So I think that's why I started loving Bollywood.
08:57And then I went to India.
08:58And then I went to India.
08:59And then I went to India.
09:00And then I went to India.
09:01And then I went to India.
09:02And then I went to India.

09:27And then I went to India.
