01:00Life was hard back then for Emiratis, as they survived lack of water and other resources.
01:05They used to bring water from fuels in the area at Wadi Al Aam in Ras Al Khaimah,
01:10by carrying a special jar on their shoulders and walk for hours to reach their houses.

02:24The Emir of the Mazroui tribe in Ras Al Khaimah and Emir stands for the leader.
02:29He still remembers when he was young and used to travel with his father for 6 days to reach Dubai.
02:39And sheikhs would give them a piece of paper like a permit to get goods.
02:44Back then, Dubai helped many people with food and even clothes.
03:00We have a dagger, a sword, a spear and a speargun.
03:07We used to have a rifle but we never used it.
03:11Back then, Bedouins used to carry weapons like daggers, swords and rifles to defend themselves from enemies who would raid the villages.
03:19There is no prophet but God and Satan. He tests and tests. He defends himself.
03:28Or outlaws who used to attack their convoys while traveling across the country.
03:34They cut the road and cut it. He cut it. And if you have a weapon, defend yourself.
03:40In the past, the only source to gain knowledge and get information and news about what's going on was by sitting with our elderly in the Majlis.
03:54It was a place to share and pass traditions from a generation to another.
03:59It was a hard life back then but the union changed our life for better.
04:05I still remember in the early 70s when the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan visited our area and ordered to build wells and establish roads and schools.
04:15He said, the good is coming to our land.
04:34So we are here in an Emirati traditional house where Emiratis used to live and share their traditions all the way from their ancestors.
04:47So we're going to meet Umm Maryam to tell us more about this Emirati house.
04:50This is a traditional Emirati house. It has two sections, one for the winter and one for the summer.
05:01It's built from stones and wood to protect people from cold weather and rainfall.
05:06This place used to have four to five people who would sleep and stay inside.
05:12In the summer, people used to stay outside in the shaded area to talk and have food or coffee.
05:20This place they call it Arshan.
05:24Many Emirati scientists, doctors and engineers were raised in these houses and areas.
05:30From these simple houses, Emiratis were able to reach this place.
05:40The old Emirati women who lived in this place not only used to do the housework and look after the children,
05:46but they helped their husbands in farming, bringing water and wood to the house.
05:54Emirati women used to make different kinds of food like thick and thin breads, Chami and what they call Yigit.
06:06So this is from the cow milk.
06:12I mean the smell, you can really feel the heritage and the history of this place from the smells of food and the spices and everything.
06:22So this is just like a traditional kitchen.
06:35Umm Maria is going to make coffee.
06:39This is the place where they used to put the plates and the coffee.
