00:00As Pakistan reels from weeks of unprecedented and devastating flash floods, on Monday it
00:07began to tally up the hits to its economy.
00:10The full extent of the damage remains to be seen as authorities wait for water levels
00:15to recede.
00:16Yet according to the country's planning minister, Ashan Iqbal, early estimates showed they were
00:21already deep in the red.
00:23I think it's going to be huge.
00:25So far, a very early preliminary estimate is that it is higher than $10 billion.
00:33My hunch is that this is going to be two to three times higher than what we are estimating.
00:38Iqbal said almost half of the country's cotton crops had been washed away by historic rains,
00:44a serious blow to a country whose textile sector makes up a majority of what it sells
00:49abroad.
00:50Meanwhile, severe damage to other crops caused food prices to shoot up.
00:55The floods also wiped out infrastructure around the country, including a major bridge in northern
01:00Pakistan which wound up almost completely cut off from the rest of the country.
01:05One resident, Ali Jan, described how quickly the situation turned dire.
01:11It was raining but not heavily.
01:12Suddenly, the outer wall of the compound collapsed and water gushed in.
01:17We barely managed to save ourselves.
01:19By the time the women were leaving the house, the water had become almost waist-deep.
01:23We evacuated the women and the cattle.
01:26The rest is there for you to see.
01:29Many like Jan are now reckoning with the aftermath of what the country's climate change minister
01:33called a climate-induced humanitarian disaster of epic proportions.
01:38At least a thousand people have been killed in recent weeks, with more than 33 million
01:43people affected, over 15% of Pakistan's population.
