00:00Well, this was supposed to be a blockbuster game and you couldn't have asked for a better game.
00:04Both sides played well and you have to give it to Harshal Patel.
00:15Hello and welcome to IPL 2021 straight back with Anish Sajjan, who is Mr. Cricket UAE and also
00:23Gulf News. We are here to take you right through the first match, which is an absolutely amazing
00:28one. It took our breath away. We're going to analyze it with Gautam, who is our associate
00:35editor from India and this is Anish Sajjan. First of all, we're going to go straight to Anish and
00:42see what his take is on the match. It was an amazing one. Mumbai Indians defending champions
00:47against Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore. Well, this was supposed to be a blockbuster game
00:54and you couldn't have asked for a better game. Both sides played well and you have to give it
00:58to Harshal Patel, who made sure that Mumbai Indians were respected to below 160. And RCB,
01:04as usual, make heavy weather of chasing this target. And Gautam, just to say hello to you as
01:12well. What was your take on things? Yeah, it's a typical case, as Anish said, of RCB making
01:21heavy weather of things. But I would like to give credit to Harshal Patel. You know, this guy is
01:27quite a bit of a journeyman. He's played for Mumbai before. And he's the kind of bowler that
01:34Shardul Thakur of Chennai Super Kings sees. And this wicket was not an ideal one to bat on. It
01:41was a bit of a two-paced wicket. So he did very well to set it up for RCB in the first place.
01:47RCB, once again, I think, I would like to pop this question to Anish that,
01:53you know, you're getting a guy called Rajat Patidar at number three, instead of AV. So
02:01what is it? What do you think about that move, Anish? Well, one thing I want to answer definitely
02:08is that generally, you know, we have seen this movie Ghajini, where Amir Khan has a short-term
02:14memory loss. So Virat Kohli probably also has this short-term memory loss. When he has to get
02:18Washington Sundar to bowl in the powerplay, he doesn't get him. And he gets him to bat in the
02:22powerplay and he consumes 16 balls and scores 10 runs. Absolutely. That sounded like Virat
02:29Kohli having a brain freeze. And probably, you know, they heavily depend, as I said, on the Virats
02:34and the AB de Villiers. Today, they got out of jail. But mind you, it won't happen again if they
02:38are chasing 180-190. No, guys. Also, I mean, as you said there, I mean, that is the first ever
02:465-4. OK, granted, it all came in the last over. But that's the first ever 5-4 that anyone has
02:54ever taken against Mumbai Indians in 14 years. That's an amazing statistic. Fantastic. No one
03:00has ever done that before. Even if you said that he took it in the last over, but mind you, he took
03:05the first wicket of Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya before that. And they were slower delivers. He
03:10deceived the batsmen. And credit to him. And like Gautam mentioned, you know, he has a journey
03:15and he's like the Shardul of India. And he can also bat, mind you. So credit to him. And definitely,
03:22he should be the man of the match today. The key to that was obviously, had he not done that,
03:29as we came down to one run, one ball, it would have been a completely different result. So that,
03:34as you said, is a man of the match performance. Speaking of which, AB de Villiers, why is he not
03:41opening in a man, another fascinating one for me, has not played cricket since the UAE in the IPL.
03:50That's what I was telling my son, you know, he's just played in the IPL five years, five months
03:55ago. And then you come and see him playing as if he's been playing every day. It's like walk in
03:59the park. But AB de Villiers, that's why they call him 360 degrees. And he proved once again,
04:05why is it 360 degrees. But mind you, Virat Kohli needs to understand a 360 degrees can be halted in
04:10his streets for sure. Yeah, I just like to pitch in here, Matt, that, you know, when actually,
04:20AB came to play in the IPL in UAE, he was again out of cricket for about four, five months.
04:27Yeah. So he's a long time. He's retired from international cricket.
04:37I think it's the natural athleticism about this man who's played hockey,
04:42who's played, you know, who's played all kinds of sport in South Africa, they are such a big
04:46sporting nation. So that pays off. I mean, otherwise, how does he take these singles
04:52and try to convert it into two, where he got run out eventually. So amazing.
04:58So is it more like a sporting instinct that stays with you, as opposed to day in day out
05:03playing with your national team? I would reckon him to be exceptional. I mean, that's why,
05:08you know, there are very few in this cricket community, I mean, whatever, he may have become
05:14an elder statesman or whatever, the admiration about him from everybody just doesn't go down,
05:21including the commentators. So that's it.
05:25Okay. And so back to the match, Anis, obviously, there was quite a few dropped catches,
05:33an absolute cracker by Virat Kohli when he dropped the ball right into his own eyeball.
05:40Do you think that is everybody playing away from home going to be changing this comfort thing,
05:47because they're all going to be on strange tracks, in strange stadiums?
05:52Like you mentioned, drop catches for Salansa, you know, there's a lot of butter being now
05:56available in Chennai. And that's one of the reasons that the drop catches happen from both sides.
06:00And of course, not playing on home ground definitely doesn't help. And to be very
06:05honest, I was very surprised that Mumbai Indian picked only one spinner, whereas
06:11RCB had three spinners, because Chennai is known to support spinners. And you saw though,
06:15as Gautam said, the wicket was double-paced.
06:19Gautam, what do you think?
06:22Yes, you know, the wicket did play its role. But there again, you have to, I mean,
06:28this is going to set the tone for this IPL. I mean, Chennai, who actually thrive in this kind
06:34of conditions playing three spinners, they're not going to play in Chennai. Similarly, Mumbai,
06:40I think Anish wrote it the other day, Mumbai prefer their wicket at, you know, at Wankhede,
06:47where the red soil offers a bit of purchase. I mean, it's not Australia, but there will be
06:52certain amount of bounce and carry on the wicket. They're not getting that kind of wicket. And
06:56Mumbai are actually a bit weak in the spin department. If there's any department where
07:01they are slightly weak, it's spin. So firstly, they have not been able to, you know, break this
07:09jinx of losing the first game. It doesn't mean much for Mumbai, really. I mean,
07:13they're little slow starters. And they have to develop this ability to be, you know,
07:19an all conditions team.
07:22Okay, and it's a bit unfair if we don't talk about the unsung hero of the matches,
07:27Glenn Maxwell. He kept the innings together after we lost Kohli and opened the door for
07:37de Villiers to then, you know, get him across the line, be it by one ball. But Maxwell,
07:44he had such a dreadful time last year. Does it look like he's now getting himself back together?
07:50Yes, the big show finally fired. I had a friend from Punjab who sent me a message
07:56why he didn't play for us so well last year. And in the first match itself, he's got going for
08:00RCB. And to be very honest, when Virat was playing the anchor role, it was Maxwell who
08:05did bulk of the scoring.
08:09GB?
08:11Yeah, he, see, last year, his point was, if I recall correctly, he came on the back of a very
08:18good, you know, one day series for Australia. And then he came for the entire, you know,
08:24IPL season in the UAE. Today only, I heard an amazing piece of statistic that he didn't hit a
08:30single six in those 14 league games. The first one he had today. Yeah, his first one today.
08:38I think he hit around three. Yeah. So and but then he said that, you know, like my role wasn't
08:44correct. I mean, the role, I was not happy with the role given to me. So these things, you know,
08:50they it's like your word against mine. I mean, it's just, you know, one match he did well.
08:55But RCB need to still need to put their act together, really. I mean, today,
09:00today, they were, you know, it was a jailbreak kind of a situation may not happen every time.
09:06So that's, that's almost perfect. So what I was going to say, I was going to say,
09:10looking ahead, with Washington Sundar, and let's say, stuttering, maybe thrust in too early,
09:17AB and Maxwell doing great. Do you tinker with that lineup, having a win, having a winning
09:25lineup against the defending champions? Or do you bring what? Or do you bring Washington down
09:31and bring Maxwell and AB up? No, they will be having Padikkal because they had not taken him
09:36because he had, you know, had got that turn positive. So that's the reason they decided
09:40to give him a break. And I'm sure he'll be back and you will see Padikkal who had scored five
09:45centuries in the recently concluded tournament. So he should be back. And I think everything
09:49should be fine. But again, coming to the point, they can't be depending on AB and Virat.
09:54The Maxwell's, the Padikkal's, Dan Christians, even James Neeson, they have to make sure that
10:01they score the runs, whether they're bad first or bad second. Do you agree?
10:09Yes, yes. I think, you know, before we wrap up for the day, I would like to,
10:14you know, pick both of your brains about tomorrow's game. You know, tomorrow, you've got a big game
10:20in Mumbai. Chennai are going to play Delhi Capitals. Delhi Capitals, a young side,
10:26full of beans after their, you know, runners-up show last time. And Chennai will have a lot to
10:32prove. Chennai will have to sit, you know, they're still a dad's army, but they have done some good
10:37acquisitions. So what does, what's Anish's take on that? I mean, about this game?
10:44Well, in my banter show with my son, I clearly said that the lion has grown old.
10:49And we'll have to see. We'll have to see probably how Pant can prove and take his form,
10:57which he added from the Australian series. And we got to say that Delhi should start as favorites
11:01tomorrow. Right. I was wondering at Sahil's choice. I mean, given the age group that he
11:09comes from, he should be a Kohli fan, but he seems to be a Dhoni fan, which is amazing.
11:14Yes, yes, yes. Absolutely spot on. He's following your footsteps, Gautam.
11:21I think Dhoni is the only cricketer I know that's actually about the same age as me,
11:26you know. They're all teenagers to me. I don't know, I've got a feeling that Chennai might,
11:35I don't think they can last the piece. I think maybe they can get the odd surprise here and
11:39there, but they won't. I don't see them making the playoffs. So you can tell your son that.
11:49Yeah. We'll wait and watch tomorrow. Well, it's been a great chat today.
11:55We'll obviously be doing this every evening throughout the whole of the IPL. And I just
