00:00What should have been EG's chase, rather chasing 145.
00:04Delhi made a heavy meal of it, but thanks to Rambal Powell, they got home.
00:17Hello, good evening. Welcome to yet another show of our Straight Back with Gulf News and Mr. Cricket UAE.
00:24With me this evening, the guest, Anish Sajan, Mr. Cricket UAE himself, and A.K. Satish, the Sports
00:31Editor of Gulf News. So we are taking stock about, you know, quite a close and, you know, interesting
00:38game between Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, which saw Delhi shake off their, you know,
00:45if I may say that, both on and off the field blues to come back to winning ways. It was not
00:50a smooth win. I will ask Anish Bhai to sum up his thoughts about the game.
00:57Thank you, Gautam. Hi, Satish, and hello to all the lovely people of Gulf News.
01:01What should have been EG's chase, rather chasing 145. Delhi made a heavy meal of it,
01:07but thanks to Rambal Powell, they got home. But this could have been very, very bad had
01:13Rambal Powell got out. I know there are no ifs and buts, but these two crucial points for Delhi
01:18have brought them up. And now they are in the reckoning for the playoffs. But I'm afraid KKR
01:24have lost it. Right. Yes, I mean, the way KKR, those two crucial partnerships, I mean, first up
01:34between the captain and Nitish Shana, and then Rana and Rinku Singh, they came to the threshold of
01:43150. But this weekend never held any terrors. I'll come to Satish now.
01:49I mean, we always felt it was a below par score, Satish, isn't it?
01:54I think at least 20-25 runs, Gautam, because there was nothing on the wicket,
01:58though it was looking dry. There was nothing on the wicket. And it was even the last over when
02:03Shreyas Iyer was bowling a spinner. There was not a spin at this point of time. I think the
02:09main reason for that is, I think, the constant turning and churning of the entire team,
02:16basically, especially the opening partnership. I think there are about four or five or six
02:20different opening partnerships in the last eight games or nine games. Nine games they have played
02:26so far. Yeah, nine games, they must have changed about six times. And there was not two games
02:33where they have played the same partnership in the last four games, at least, I would say.
02:40Yeah, I'll come back to Anirudh on that. I mean, Aaron Finch, he's a guy who's been there
02:48and he has played in some six or seven franchises. What could be the brief to him? We all know that
02:55you have to make the most of the power playovers. But what could be the brief to him that an
03:00experienced batter like him cannot cope with it and bat a little deep? I mean, one day he got a
03:0558 all right in the previous game. But the first game, if you remember the short selection, it was
03:10pretty horrible again. So he wasn't of much help. I mean, they were banking a lot on him, isn't it?
03:17You're right, Gautam. The message, if I am a captain of KKR or I am the coach of KKR
03:23would be very simple. We are there to back you. You show it to us why you are the captain of
03:28Australia and why you have been doing so well for your country for so long. Okay, I know Aaron
03:33Finch has not done much well as far as batting is concerned for Australia, but he was a man
03:38who was a captain when Australia won the World Cup. So follow that basic things. But like Satish
03:43has hit the nail, if you watch KKR in the last four games, apart from the opening, every match
03:49they have been chopping and changing three to four players. That is not how a franchise works. I
03:53understand that you get anxious, you get worried when you don't win. But this is an overall of a
03:59team, not for them itself, for everybody. And if you look at in the past, that is the CSK and Mumbai,
04:05they don't chop and change three, three, four, four players every game. Good franchises take time to
04:10build. And you need to back your players whom you have given confidence. You don't back them just
04:15you've paid them heavy money to back them on their talent. Another thing that is like Kuldeep
04:21Jadhav. Kuldeep seems to be proving a point every time he is coming on the ball against KKR.
04:26I mean, today, that over, it was a bit suicidal, I would reckon, where he got both Shreyas and
04:33Andre Russell. But overall, it's been a great season of comeback for him, isn't it?
04:40Yes, you can say that Gautam that, especially against his franchise, this is the second time
04:44he's got four wickets, he probably would have got a five-four had he got one more over. But
04:50I want to see him bowling against the English batsmen. English batsmen play very well, whether
04:55it is Jonny Besto, whether it is Moeen Ali, or whether, I don't know how many of them are there.
05:01I think Living Livingstone is also one there. Because they have been able to read him. Kuldeep
05:06Jadhav is a mystery bowler who was to be a mystery bowler. He's no more. I believe he had lost his
05:11confidence. In fact, last year, he got probably one game or two game. But I'm not sure he did
05:15even play that IPL. But the fact remains, Kuldeep Jadhav, if people don't read him, he's a difficult
05:20bowler. If people read him, you can really easily take him out of the pack. But I don't want to take
05:24anything away from him. He's got 16 wickets, the second-highest wicket-taker in this IPL.
05:28So you've got to give it to him. As long as people don't read him, he's a good bowler.
05:34I'll come to Satish. I think Umesh Jadhav, he did his bit to keep KKR in the game. I mean,
05:40he has been striking regularly in that powerplay. And then again, when they were looking for wickets,
05:46he came round the wicket and he was trying to think and outwit the batsmen with his short stuff.
05:53What do you think about his resurgence of Umesh? Umesh was always one of the key
06:01bowlers for India. But I think, Gautam, what is happening now is, there is a problem of plenty
06:06for India. So the pressure is more on the fast bowlers, especially. If A is not doing well for
06:12a couple of matches, there is somebody else, B is coming in and he's doing well. So even now,
06:15if you look at the talents we have, the number of talents and people like Natarajan and all,
06:21I don't know if they will get a chance again. So maybe it was one of the reasons why that
06:26pressure took on and then the injuries, everything took its toll on him and then he was not able to
06:31perform. But I think this year, the big difference I see is he started enjoying his bowling again.
06:36And he is bowling with the same energy and the sharp bouncers and the swing.
06:45That was more like Hal Mokhtar was bowling when he was playing for India as well.
06:51Anishbhai, I remember you terming Delhi Capitals as one of the title contenders
06:58after the auction and also early on. Now, today, they've got the full points and the first leg and
07:05the second leg in a long tournament, it can always be a different ball game. But what would be the
07:10takeaway for you from this game? I mean, there wasn't much, isn't it, despite the win? I mean,
07:16how do you reckon, where do you see them going?
07:20I probably rated them far too high. And still, I believe that they have got something. I was,
07:26in fact, in conversation with Shane Watson, one of the assistant coach. He says that they have got
07:31the team, it's just that the plans have to be executed. But easier said than done. On paper,
07:37they look a strong side. If Warner and Prithvi Shaw give them the start, the others are not
07:42performing. Today, Warner luckily stood. Otherwise, it would have been a tricky chase. And
07:47thankfully, Romwell Paul used his head and did not go crazy and throw his wicket away. Otherwise,
07:52they would have lost this game too. The bowling attack looks good. The only thing is that they
07:56have met one of the foreign players set out, that is Henry Nockier. But if they have to get him,
08:02they probably have to drop either Mustafiz or Mitchell Marsh. I'm not sure whom they're going
08:08to go ahead with. But if they're going to play Mitchell Marsh as a batsman, they will have to
08:12get another batsman in Sarfaraz Khan. So I'm not sure about how they're going to go about it. But
08:18to me, Delhi Capitals have not been playing to their potential. If they play like this sloppy
08:22cricket, they will be beaten by another team. Right. I think Yatharth is with us,
08:30the Delhi Capitals fan. Yatharth, good evening.
08:32He just signed in.
08:36Yeah. To take on what Anisbhai has said, I think that Nock against,
08:45I think it was Rajasthan, right? The 36th of the last over, Poval hit about three sixes.
08:52I think that Nock has given him plenty of confidence. I think he should… You can see a
08:57lot better Poval in the next few games is what I'm thinking. Because the way he is playing and
09:02the confidence he is showing and the cool head is approaching the chase even at difficult times.
09:10I think we might see a better… I think that form will also help Delhi to circum…
09:20rather come over these kind of hurdles at the final stages.
09:24Yeah. Yatharth is here.
09:26Yeah. Yatharth, good evening.
09:28I think you're on mute.
09:30Yeah. I think you're on mute.
09:31Good evening. Yes.
09:35Good to have you finally. We were waiting for you. Then we got started. Anyway,
09:41first up, congratulations on Delhi Capitals returning to the winning ways.
09:46So, as I said initially that there were quite a few blues on and off the field. First,
09:52you've got so many COVID cases in the team. Then you've got Ricky Ponting sitting out due to
09:57isolation. And then a bit of a hard-earned win today. So, how do you think… They've just
10:03started the second leg of the campaign and this is a big tournament. So, where do you see your team
10:08eventually going? Well, I mean, it's a very tricky situation, to be honest. When you've got 10 teams
10:14on the ladder, now you have… The equation was you need to win five out of seven. Now it goes to
10:19four out of six. So, it's a very tricky situation, to be honest. And today, to be honest, the game
10:23shouldn't have went on till the 18th over, right? You've choked the opposition. You've got the
10:27other wickets. You've got dangerous. Aaron finned out cheaply. Russell got cheaply. And then you
10:32leaked so many runs. 145 shouldn't have… I believe 130 could have been a very possible
10:38better score than to be respected. Because we had the tails right up in front and we couldn't
10:43capitalize. There were also some tactical errors which Rishabh made as a captain by probably not
10:48giving one more over to Kuldeep Pradhan, who had already taken four wickets in his three overs. So,
10:53that was a huge blunder. Probably over-relying a bit upon… A bit of Shadul Thakur as well as
10:59Gaditya Yadav. You had two options of Roman Powell and Mitchell March as well. You never
11:03tried them because it's a long tournament. Probably, if you… Hopefully, we don't get
11:08an injury. But if you get, those two resources could have been used. And then we got such a
11:13rating start by David Warner. And then again, we felt in a tricky situation where we lost
11:18a couple of quick wickets. Rather, you know, three wickets and 18 runs in the last five
11:22overs. And then, gladly, Roman Powell, who was riding high on confidence, took the job up and
11:29take his team part. But this is not the right way going forward. Yes, you have taken most of
11:33the boxes. But I feel that you should be more smart because this game did not require to go
11:39down till the 18th over. Net 100 is absolutely fine. But you should avoid taking risks and
11:46taking the game down to the very last. Right. Because see, the start, I mean, normally,
11:53the Delhi template so far last two, three seasons had been, you know, they were on the ball
11:58initially. So by the time they were, you know, that magic figure of, you know, 14 points,
12:05they were getting it very quickly. But this time is a far trickier business. I'll come to Anish
12:11before we move on to talk about tomorrow's game. And also if anybody wants to make any point. Anish,
12:18very quickly, if you can just tell us about the prediction contest that we are running with you.
12:24Yeah, quickly before that, Gautam, I want to talk about Rishabh Pant. You know, as a captain,
12:29I'm afraid like Yathar mentioned, last match, he lost it off the field by behaving like a child.
12:35I know he's just 24 or 23. But that shouldn't have happened. Secondly, today on the field,
12:41you know, it is easy for us now to make assumptions while Alithiyadu bowled it over,
12:45like Kuldeep Yadav, maybe Kuldeep Yadav also could have won. But the fact as a batsman,
12:50that is in his control. If the bowler leaks runs, it is not in his control. But as a batsman,
12:54when you know that you can't take a risk with Warner got out, this game could have been lost.
13:00One mistake by Powell could have cost him two crucial points like RCB lost it. So this was
13:04the time for him to take the game deep because the run rate Warner had already given them that
13:09cushion. So what he had to do was to go deep. It was a very loose shot and I could see in the
13:13dugout, he was sitting next to Ponting thinking biting his nails, Ponting equally bites the nails.
13:18He was wondering if this game slips, I'm going to get a stick from Ponting. Fortunately,
13:22he survived. But this cannot be repeated as a captain, he has to put his hand up and score runs.
13:28And about the competition, yes, predicting the winner in this IPL is very difficult,
13:33like we saw in yesterday's game, how the match Gujarat-Titans won. But if you're good and you're
13:38spot on, you win a beautiful kit, which is a track t-shirt and a cap and a one-year digital
13:43subscription from Gulf News. I'll come to you Atharth before asking about tomorrow's game.
13:50Just a quick word from you that it was a changed lineup. Chetan Sakaria, who did the left-armer,
13:57who did so well for Royals last time, he came on and he did a fair job. And then you know,
14:03with two left-armers operating, that also adds a bit of a dimension to your attack with a front.
14:09So do you think this is the closest to a perfect lineup that you can get? Or you still want to
14:15see Anrich Nockier at the expense of obviously, one of the bowlers and then compromise on
14:21you know, the batters? Well, I mean, it's a very tough question to be honest,
14:26the bowling lineup, it's absolutely gun-blazing. You've got lots of options and all those options
14:31are quite amazing. Like you can also bring in Anrich Nockier, considering the fact that the
14:36opposition has a more number of left-handed batsmen. Because if you look at the Delhi
14:40bowling lineup, you'll get most of left-handed bowlers. You've got Akshav Patel, you've got
14:45Kuldeep Pyadav, Mustafizur Rehman, Khalil Ahmed, Chetan Sakaria. So as many as five bowlers for
14:51left-handed bowlers. So if opposition do have extra left-handed batsmen, so you can take in
14:56a risk of dropping Mustafizur Rehman and bringing in Anrich Nockier in place of him, which will give
15:00you the mixture of both. You will have a pace gun like Nockier, cutters like Shardul Thakur and
15:05Chetan Sakaria and Khalil Ahmed to swing the ball earlier on. So this would be a good bowling lineup.
15:09But on the other hand side, we still miss an Indian batter in this middle order state.
15:15Because the straight where Lalit Yadav came in, had there been some other guy, probably KS Bharat,
15:20he hasn't been given a go yet in the tournament so far. Lalit Yadav is just striding on the basis
15:26that he can give a cushion as a bowler, but you have plenty of options. You have got Marsh, you
15:30have got Powell. So I still feel that the batting needs a little bit of strength here, because both
15:36Marsh as well as sometimes Mithishor does struggle against spinners. So probably a player like KS
15:41Bharat who plays spin really very well, would cause the eyes of the selectors probably to keep
15:45wanting as well. So this is just a little bit of concern, but I hope we get our momentum from this.
15:51That's a very pertinent point. In fact, it was a little off the radar that KS Bharat is with Delhi.
15:56I mean, he can come in as definitely he is the right mix of playing in the domestic
16:02cricket for long enough, had been a prolific scorer. So if he comes in purely as a batter,
16:08then possibly it makes some sense. Somebody needs to play that waiting game in between
16:13a point which Anisbhai was also making. Anyway, we go on to tomorrow's game. So tomorrow we have got
16:21Punjab Kings and Lucknow Supergiants. Lucknow Supergiants have done very well for themselves
16:26so far. So I'll start with Anisbhai. Punjab Kings versus Lucknow Super Kings, I mean both
16:34a bit of a North Indian derby essence in there. What do you think about it?
16:38Lucknow depend a lot on Rahul. The batting revolves a lot on Rahul and he's been delivering
16:43with the bat. And Punjab is an hot and cold team. On paper, definitely Punjab looks strong as a
16:48batting unit. Lucknow has a strong bowling unit. But again, like last match, if they make sure that
16:54they get a good start, then the big boys like the Livingstone can do the, you know, going for the
16:59big shots. It's difficult to pick. I still would go, as much as I like Punjab, I would go with Lucknow.
17:08Satish, what do you feel? KL or OMAD?
17:13I think KL has an edge because he doesn't give up so easily, Gautam. He's been getting runs. Rahul
17:23is getting runs and I'm sure. And Lucknow has got a much rounded team than Punjab. Even
17:30against Chennai, if you look at, they were literally, you know, like a scampering home
17:35after such a good game as well. So I think Lucknow is much more clinical in their approach.
17:42And I would say I'll go with Lucknow as well. That's why I would say.
17:47Yatharth, what's your take? Whom will you root for?
17:52I have a very biased opinion. Probably being a DC fan, I would require a team who is below on
17:58the points to defeat the upper team. So probably if I'm not wrong, Punjab needs to defeat Lucknow
18:03Super Giant. So I will be rooting for the Punjab team. But that will give a question, not give a
18:08question to Delhi, Yatharth. Punjab will then be on same points like, in fact, they'll go two
18:13points ahead of Delhi. They'll be on par with Delhi. Even Lucknow wins, they go up. But
18:25Delhi is a more, I would say that it's very, very tricky. It's better you win all your matches
18:32and Delhi will be through. Don't worry about other results. Exactly. I think it's still early to do
18:38that. And the good thing about both these new franchises is that they have been managing to
18:43win from different situations. I mean, Gujarat had obviously surprised us with that. But same
18:50goes for Lucknow. So I will keep Lucknow slightly ahead in tomorrow's game.
18:55And on that note, Yatharth, I think Delhi is playing Lucknow next game.
19:01Yes, exactly. So that day, you may not get Yatharth.
19:09Anyway, nice to have you, even if a little late. And on that note, we conclude our discussion.
19:15We'll be back tomorrow after tomorrow's game again for another round of, you know,
19:20straight back with Mr. Cricket UAE. Thank you.
