00:00First, CSK were beaten soundly by Sunrisers Hyderabad to get their first points.
00:04And Mumbai, along with CSK, are at the bottom of the table with 4 losses in 4 games after going down to RCV.
00:20Hello everyone. Welcome to Straight Bad with Garth Hughes and Mr. Cricket QAE, that is Anish Sarjan.
00:25We have a double-headed IPL today and two of the favourites who have nine IPL titles
00:31between them crash to their fourth defeat. So plenty to talk about and joining us today
00:38are two fans today and that is Shailendra Raghavani who is a business man and a massive fan
00:42and Arjun Viyav is very familiar with us, a massive massive CSK fan and I'm sure he's not
00:48a happy fan today. Anish, tell us about how the game's unfolded today.
00:53Good evening, Shyam. Hello, Satish. Hi, Shailendra. Hello, QT, Arjun and hello to all the lovely
00:58people of Garth Hughes. Two boring games after what we saw yesterday, what Rahul Tevetia did.
01:05But that's the way the game goes. First, CSK were beaten soundly by Sunrisers Hyderabad
01:10to get their first points and Mumbai, along with CSK, are at the bottom of the
01:15table with 4 losses in 4 games after going down to RCV. So, probably an off day in the office
01:21for the T20 IPL fans who did not get an Hamdega but you have to say two clinical
01:27performances by RCV as well as by Sunrisers. Before I get to the fans, let me ask Satish
01:34who himself is a CSK fan but I think he has to be impartial today. Of course.
01:44So we have CSK as well as Mumbai crashing to their fourth defeat. I don't think this has ever
01:49happened in the history of IPL. What do you think has happened to the teams?
01:57No, it's happened to CSK. CSK, I think once they won the title after almost…
02:02What I meant was two of the top favourites slumping at the same time.
02:07I think we have to go back to the auction, Shyam. These teams don't have the players which
02:13have been doing well for them over the years. And having said that,
02:19again, they have not got that equation or the team that would do well because they need to…
02:26They are one team where they always have a plan for everything. But they don't have the players
02:34right now to execute those skills. And adding to that, to talk about Mumbai, the main players for
02:42Mumbai were Jasprit Bumrah and Roy Sharma, who have not been performing up to their own
02:49expectations right now. So that's one thing for Mumbai. And for CSK, if you look at last year,
02:55Ruturaj was the main scorer, the Orange Cup winner, who has yet to find his touch again.
03:01But it's only a matter of time these two teams will come back, is my gut feeling, Shyam. They'll
03:06come back. They'll make their move. Okay. Shailendra, you said you are an impartial
03:10but a massive fan here. Okay, I will put the same question to you. These are two of the most
03:17professional IPL sites. I mean, they look after every aspect of it. They are mainly in the core
03:22sites. Even selection-wise, they don't chop and change. They are very, very professional.
03:30What is really happening to them? See, actually, if you look at both the teams,
03:37their main players are no more with them. Like CSK, if you see,
03:44Duplessis is not there. They have not retained him. And Duplessis has gone to another team and
03:51that he is doing good, Bangalore. So even Mumbai, you see, Pandya brothers are not there.
03:58Both the brothers definitely had hugely contributed to Mumbai. So,
04:06we can call them basically a new team. Just retained four players in each team. Rest,
04:13everybody else is almost new. So, they are still trying to find their momentum.
04:21As I heard Arjun saying that even if they win a couple of games, it's going to be a happy
04:29moment for them. I mean, the way they are going, it's going to be very, very tough.
04:35I mean, I personally feel they're already out of the tournament.
04:39Arjun, let me come to you. I know you just can't wait to get into this.
04:43Chennai is one of the teams who maintain the core of the team. In fact, they have at least
04:52seven players from the previous team. So, what is going wrong for them? Is it the new captain?
04:57Or is it the lack of Deepak Chahar? I mean, of course, they didn't have the
05:02spearhead Josh Hazlewood, who was such a massive, massive role last year.
05:08So, what exactly is going wrong with them?
05:13It's a mix of three things, really. First of all, the new captain. Jadeja is a good player,
05:22I'm not going to lie. He's really good. He can bowl, he can bat. The problem is,
05:27his captaincy is not the best. Not as good as Dhoni anyway.
05:33When you look at Jadeja's captaincy, you can see it's missing two core things.
05:38One, the way he sets his field. I don't agree most of the time. With the amount of gaps that
05:45he leaves, I'm surprised we haven't lost brutally somehow. And the second thing is the batting order.
05:57Sorry, the bowling order. The way CSK bowls, they require pacers and spinners.
06:06And assuming at this point we don't have any good pacers, our only option is spinners.
06:14And spinners aren't that good on most of these wickets. So, I think that is one thing.
06:20Second thing is the loss of so many players during the auction. We lost Shahrukh Takur,
06:28Deepak Charkhanprey, we lost Hazelwood. Our amazing pace lineup just got lost in that
06:39auction. It all happens in the auction in this IPL, especially with 10 teams. And the third thing
06:47is how they've absolutely lost their momentum. CSK have never lost an opening game. And because
06:55of this, I think it's gone completely downhill from them. It's like a small domino effect
07:01that could reach CSK, not even making it to the qualifiers.
07:08All right, Arjun. You've spoken like a true fan.
07:14Yes, I'm a little more dispassionate here. Is CSK's bowling so bad? Because when I look at it,
07:19they have Mahesh Tikshna, who is a very, very good T20 bowler. And you have Rabindranath Jagannath,
07:25who can really, really bowl some darts. And Moeen Ali has not been used sufficiently. Yes,
07:30they are missing Josh Hazelwood and Deepak Chahar, which means the early breakthroughs are coming.
07:35So, is it as bad as what Arjun makes out to be?
07:40You see, when you don't get wickets and the power play looks bad, even though they did get a couple
07:45of wickets against Punjab, but they couldn't defend a total of 200. But the fact remains is that
07:52overall, as a package, CSK has not been doing… Today, they were 100-2. That is when probably
07:57Raidu got out. And then in the next over, Moeen Ali got out. Then you saw Sivan Dubey getting out.
08:02Then Dhoni getting out. So, I had this plan. Because this was not that easy wicket as it sounded
08:08when Sarit scored. But 170 would have been a different cup of tea. But I am afraid they are
08:15not getting that finishing touch. Now, when you do have 150 on the board, you can't expect too much.
08:20And they did not have the bowling attack like Arjun mentioned. They are not getting wickets in
08:24the power play. I think even though Williamson was slow off the blocks, but they set up a platform.
08:29And Abhishek Sharma today showed it to us, what he is made of. He is a talent. And once you are
08:37on song, he showed what he can do. And he single-handedly won the game for Hyderabad.
08:44So, Satish, again, this is something more of an enduring theme throughout this
08:48World Cup. I mean, sorry, this IPL is that the youngsters coming to the fore. Day after day,
08:54we talk about them. Today also, it was two youngsters who just blew the match away.
08:59One was Abhishek Sharma and the other was Anuj Rawat. Tell us about them.
09:03At least, Abhishek Sharma was not even a newcomer. Abhishek Sharma has been with
09:09SRH for the last couple of years. So, he has some experience in his back. But I was quite amazed
09:19with the way Anuj Rawat played today, Shyam. It was a tricky game. They should be protecting
09:24the wickets. And Faf was not getting his timing right. So, that was a big task for Anuj Rawat
09:31to continue scoring in that game. But he did it quite well. And towards the end,
09:39where he was unfortunately run out, he showed he's got a very good talent. And I would say,
09:44that's where I would say, like last year also, they brought in, or a couple of years ago,
09:49they brought in Deepak Devdutt Padikkal and made him a good player. And he went on to play for
09:54India. They are finding some good talents. I think that's where Mumbai or Chennai are missing
10:01that little trick where they are not able to find such raw talents and then polishing them and
10:07making them into gems, which Dhoni has done in the past. If you look at the first few years,
10:13it was CSK which brought in Ashwin and many other players like Murli Vijay and everybody else. But
10:19I think the last couple of years, they have missed it. Yes, one was
10:24our Gekwad, Ritwaj Gekwad, who came in. But he is completely off-colour this year.
10:31I think he is a good talent. He may be picked for the Indian team, maybe.
10:40And I heard he is still a teenager. Goodness knows what could happen in the future.
10:45Yes, we hope he continues in the same vein. And Chennai, just coming back, I will stay with
10:53Chennai's goals for some more time simply because, I mean, four losses in four games is
11:00unbecoming of a defending champions because they pretty much need eight,
11:04at least to win eight of the next ten matches if they have to qualify. Let's go back and just check
11:11with the CSK's batting again. Like we said, it's been suffering. Last year, if you look at
11:17Ritwaj Rudraj, he has been batting deep. I mean, he has been staying around and he has been
11:23consistently scoring. So, is it bad? Is it the opening which is the problem for CSK?
11:35See, first thing could be the toss because most of the games that they lost,
11:43toss was not in their favour. Number two, you know,
11:50Uthappa, of course, he has been playing well. But earlier years, couple of last two, three years,
11:58it was Gaikwad who actually started the opening, you know, momentum for them. So,
12:04this year, it has been, you know, slow from his bat. Apart from that, yes, the first, you know,
12:13six overs, they are not able to, you know, take the score up. That's where they are losing the
12:19momentum. I felt Moin, he did play today. He played well today. But then, you know, somewhere
12:29in the middle, they are losing the game. You know, they are not able to score in the middle overs.
12:35That's where they need to, you know, focus on. Even like Shivam Dubey and even Jadeja, Dhoni
12:42didn't play well. Maybe they can bring, you know, Bravo towards maybe four down or three down,
12:50four down, maybe. They should try that. Maybe he can change a little momentum there. You know,
12:56that's what I feel. But overall, really not satisfied with the way CSK has, you know,
13:04played this year, in this IPL season. They should refocus and probably do some, you know,
13:15juggling, you know, of the batting order, maybe.
13:21You make a very good point about Bravo there. Because he is not getting too many balls to face.
13:26And he is going way too down the order to make an impact, actually. By then, pretty much,
13:32the match, you have few more balls to face and there is no time for him to do anything really.
13:39Okay. Again, a fanboy question for you, Arjun. Do you think Chennai will make it this year or
13:45will it go the 2020 way? Okay. They probably won't make it this year. And that will upset a lot of
13:57fans. That is not a fan's answer. I think about 25% of people who watch the IPL are CSK supporters.
14:07Sorry. But four losses in a row, I don't think any team can get up from that. If you think about it,
14:21even if we win every single match, qualifiers are still going to be very risky, aren't they?
14:27And we aren't going to win every single match. And if you win eight matches,
14:32eight of the next ten matches, there is still a chance. There is. But already, the top people
14:40on the table are already on eight points. CSK are on zero. They are a four-match head start
14:49over CSK. I don't think it's that good.
14:55I think, Shyam, if Chahar comes in in place of Dubey, I think that will twist the balance,
15:01tilt the balance very much in favour of Chennai in the next few games. Again,
15:06we have seen. It's also not about you losing. If some other teams, the top teams lose
15:11as the tournament goes by, things can change around.
15:15So, yeah, if they have to win eight games or ten games, that means other teams will
15:20also be affected. So, the whole table could wear a different look if they start winning.
15:28But Arjun, I hope you won't change your answer if they win the next four games.
15:38Okay, I think we have talked enough of Chennai. Let's get back to Mumbai,
15:42your favourite team and my favourite team at what point of time. In fact,
15:45I backed them till last year. So, what's happening there?
15:50Well, honestly, like we discussed in the auction, they got it horribly wrong. They went for
15:55two big players. One is Jofra. He was not available for the whole season. Then they
15:59went for Team David. And then you don't back that player and you drop him after two games.
16:03Doesn't give good signs. And today, if you saw, they had only two foreign players.
16:08Depending too much on Bhoomra. And when you don't get wickets from Bhoomra,
16:12and you don't score runs, that's what you're going to go through. And out of the four games
16:16they have batted first, the highest I think they scored was 165 or something. Otherwise,
16:21last match 158 or 150. Thanks to Surya, today also 152. It's not been going well. Only game
16:27where they were in the match, probably I was against RR, they had a good start with Tilak
16:33and Ishan, but couldn't finish the game. But I'm afraid they looked in the same way as CSK.
16:39And I have my doubts even they will make it in the bottom four.
16:46Yeah, absolutely. And if it was not for Surya Kumar Yadav, they would have been absolutely
16:52in a terrible shape. It was 79 for 6. And that is when Surya Kumar and...
16:59Unadkat.
17:01Yeah, Unadkat was strung with the partnership and that recovered them to 150. But 150,
17:11definitely not even a pass score on this wicket. Although, it was a two-page wicket.
17:16So, where do Mumbai go from here, Saivendra?
17:22Actually, unfortunately, they have become very predictable now. I mean, as Anisbhai said that
17:28too much dependence on one bowler, Bumrah, cannot win them matches. So, if they are batting first,
17:38they have to target at least 200. Otherwise, they don't stand a chance. So, very bleak. As
17:46we see that they are at the bottom now. And I don't think even they are going to make it to top
17:55four in any way. I don't think so. Because it's right very bleak for them.
18:04Yeah, I mean, it's easy to get disheartened here for both as far as CSK and Mumbai. Because
18:10four losses, four losses. That was the first four games. And it's an uphill task from here.
18:16So, which means other teams have had a head start. Satish, how does RCB look at this point
18:23today? They were very, very clinical in their win today.
18:26The body language is brilliant, Shyam. I could see a huge difference in the body language. They
18:30are enjoying every moment. They are playing the game to perfection. And they are certainly a
18:38different team altogether. And coming back to the earlier question also. Sorry, I am just
18:44digressing here. I would say there is a chance for Chennai to even come back. But there is no
18:49chance for Mumbai. Because since last year, their performance has been going downslide
18:55for a longer period of time. And they don't know how to come out of it. So, again, coming back to
19:00RCB, it's brilliant. With Maxwell coming back into the side, they are looking even more stronger.
19:07And even those one or two little gaps that were like the holes that they had,
19:12there is no plug. And they are looking a very, very good team right now.
19:18Anish, your thoughts on RCB?
19:21To be very honest, I was very happy today to see Virat Kohli showing their intent of
19:26finishing the game, albeit through that controversial decision of an LBW. But if
19:31I have to say as a package, they look good. The biggest strength is two players.
19:37In the bowling department is Harshal Patel, as well as the leggy from Sri Lanka, Hasranga. They
19:41are the ones who are getting the wickets. They have been phenomenal. And the other guys also
19:46have been bowling well, except for Siraj. Siraj has been a disappointing thing. In three games
19:53today, he went for some 50-odd runs. In one game, he went for 59. In another game, he went for 44.
19:59I believe India should not even think about Siraj because he is not a dead bowler at all.
20:03But having said that, leaving aside Siraj, their team looks very good on paper. And if
20:09Faf can get some runs, then they have Virat, Faf, Anuj Rawat getting decent runs. Maxwell is good in
20:18the end. And then we are talking about, who else? Dinesh Karthik is there.
20:22They look to be a complete fetch. So DK. So they look to be a good side. Now it all depends
20:27when they are coming up against a strong side. Can they chase 200? Or can they defend 160?
20:36We will come to know with time.
20:39Shailendra, what do you think of RCB's performance so far? Not just today's game,
20:44the way they have progressed through the tournament.
20:46Yes. I am really happy with the way. Even today we saw Virat Kohli coming back and getting into
20:55the runs. So I feel they have a good chance to progress further. But I also agree, I am not a
21:03big fan of Siraj. So they need to work around, maybe get another bowler who can be more effective
21:14towards in the death overs. So I am sure the intent has been good and the body language as
21:23Satish mentioned is definitely positive. So RCB is something we should watch.
21:31And I am sure it is going to progress further.
21:35Yes. After disappointing doubleheader, complete two-on-siders today, tomorrow also we have
21:42doubleheader tomorrow. But before we get to that, Anil, let us know about the competition, please.
21:48Okay. Yes. Every day you get a chance to win a beautiful apparel kit, which is a t-shirt,
21:56a track and a cap for predicting the right winner. And there is lots of opportunities.
22:01Just 18 matches are done and you still have probably 52 plus 4.
22:11Okay. So that is for our readers and viewers. Can you guys predict tomorrow's winners? Let us
22:25give it a try. Tomorrow KKR versus Delhi Capitals. Shailendra, go first, please.
22:31I would go for KKR. And Arjun?
22:36KKR.
22:38Satish?
22:39Shyam, the way the last game the Cummins played and they can bat deep. I think nobody will be
22:46betting other than KKR tomorrow's game.
22:50Anil, are you up for Delhi Capitals?
22:54Well, when the tournament started, I said Delhi Capitals. But they don't look to be
22:57gelling well. So I can't be going against all the big guns. I will go with KKR.
23:02Oh, KKR is overwhelmingly KKR. Since none of you have picked Delhi Capitals,
23:08I will pick Delhi Capitals. I will have to sit in the offing tomorrow.
23:13And the second match tomorrow is Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Supergiants. Shailendra, your pick?
23:21Anybody's game. I mean, both are quite strong. Rajasthan Royals is really doing good.
23:29But even Lucknow is good. So very difficult. It all depends on the toss.
23:33It's an evening game. It's in Mumbai. So dew will be in action. So
23:40I would probably go for the person who bats second. I mean, a team which bats second. So
23:50it could be anybody's game. But if we have to choose one, then Rajasthan Royals.
23:57Okay. Arjun?
24:00I'd say Lucknow. Their team is in a really good form now. And Rajasthan's team is a little bit
24:08unstable. So if the two were going together, I would say Lucknow, yeah.
24:14So your pick is Lucknow. Sathish, do you agree with that?
24:19I'll go with Lucknow, Shyam. Just for the simple reason, the captain. Rahul is a better captain,
24:24better performer in comparison with Sanju Samson. Yeah. So I would go with Lucknow.
24:33And this is not a huge fan of Rahul. So will you pick Lucknow tomorrow?
24:37No, I'll go for RR.
24:42Yeah. I mean, Shailendra was bang on when he says that there's very little to choose between the
24:48teams. I completely agree there. I mean, I will also pick RR simply because a little bit of
24:54parochialism there, a little bit of bias there. So I'll back Sanju Samson for tomorrow.
25:00So that's all for tomorrow. It's been… Let's hope at least tomorrow's match won't be as
25:05one-sided as today's. And I hope it goes their way as we'll have at least one
25:10close finish tomorrow. And till then, that's all from us today. And thank you for tuning in.
