00:00And we head first to Kansas City, Kansas, where we started the day on a cold and snowy note,
00:04making for some slick morning commute conditions. And there he is, AccuWeather meteorologist and
00:09storm chaser Tony Laubach joins us now with a closer look. Tony, what's going on?
00:17I think the producers have something against me because all day today they've led into me by
00:22showing or hinting about the 85 degrees it is in Florida. We are nowhere near 85 degrees here in
00:30Kansas City, Kansas. In fact, the AccuWeather real feel right now is 13. My real feel feels a
00:36little even lower than that. It is a little bit chilly with just enough wind to make it bitter.
00:40And that, you know, the stuff that comes out of your nose starts freezing on your mustache. But
00:44that is what is left behind and what has been basically a lot of snow here for the folks in
00:49Kansas City. Obviously, what we saw here overnight tonight into this morning, nowhere near the
00:54blizzard they saw back in January, but they have certainly been busy. We'll show you some of the
00:59video out of the travel here this morning. Crews doing a pretty good job out here. There are a lot
01:03of lanes on a lot of these interstates here, sometimes four or five lanes wide. And for most
01:08of it, it was travel lanes. There were two of them that were perfectly clear, and then the rest were
01:12pretty much solidly snow packed. The good news, though, we talk about snow type a lot. We talk
01:17about the wet, slushy snow. Those are the ones that kind of grip your tires and want to pull you
01:21off the road. This was more of a powdery type snow. So it packed down well, actually gave a little bit
01:26more traction than you would normally see when you have a much heavier, wetter snow. So we didn't
01:31really see a lot of the issues that we would see in a typical snow event in terms of like semis that
01:36are jackknifed all over the place or just an absolute craziness during the morning rush hour.
01:40And it helped that a lot of the schools and businesses, some of the businesses closed as
01:44well this morning, so not as many people out on the roads. And we saw this pretty much from Topeka
01:49all the way out here to Kansas City. We're sitting about three inches here. We're on the southwest
01:55side of the metro. And again, that total is going to vary a little bit just depending on where you
02:00go. The further north you get, you start to tick up those totals a little bit. We saw similar
02:05numbers further west on I-70, further into Kansas areas like Topeka and Salina, where they saw that
02:10fluffy snow. And the wind really blew that around quite a bit. So that was going to be the biggest
02:16hazard for us. But really, it's going to be left behind is the cold. That is what is going to take
02:20hold here for the next couple of days. We may see a little bit of snow as we get into the weekend on
02:25Saturday. Right now, that track looking like it's going to bring most of that snow a little bit
02:29further to the north. So not sure how much we'll see here in the Kansas City area. But nonetheless,
02:33it is going to be cold. There's no way we're going to avoid that whatsoever. And if I may, guys,
02:39I've got to extend my congratulations to the folks in Omaha. You finally got snow. Welcome
02:44to the winter wonderland the rest of us have been dealing with all season. All right, Tony. Good
02:50stuff. There have been some spots like Toledo, Chicago, where we've had a shortage of snow.
02:55Good to see this distributed a little bit broader in some of these areas. That's right. As you can
02:58see right here, Chicago, they are definitely getting the snowfall here for today.
