00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Wednesday, September the 26th.
00:07Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:10India's Supreme Court today upheld the validity of India's ambitious biometric identity project
00:15Adhaar.
00:17The court said it benefited the marginalized and the poor, but sharply reined in a government
00:22push to make it mandatory for various services.
00:25In a ruling with far-reaching consequences, a panel of five judges cleared the use of
00:30Adhaar for welfare schemes.
00:33They struck down efforts to make its use mandatory in services ranging from bank accounts to
00:37mobile phone connections and school admissions.
00:41A judge has denied bail for 81-year-old comedy icon Bill Cosby after he was sentenced to
00:46three to ten years behind bars.
00:49Cosby's lawyers ask that he be allowed to remain free on bail while he appeals his conviction.
00:55But the judge appeared incredulous over the request and ordered him locked up immediately,
01:00saying that he could quite possibly be a danger to the community.
01:04Cosby was found guilty in April of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his gated
01:09estate in 2004.
01:11He was barraged with similar accusations from more than 60 women over the past five decades.
01:18It was an inconsequential match, but the India-Afghanistan Super Four match in the Unimoni Asia Cup
01:24ended in a thrilling tie.
01:26Afghan opener Mohammad Shahzad trashed the Indian attack with ease in the match at the
01:31Dubai International Stadium through an entertaining century.
01:35India already assured of a place in the final on Friday, chased through a 110-run partnership
01:41between openers Lokesh Rahul and Ambati Raidu.
01:45But despite a valiant effort by Ravindra Dradeja, Afghanistan held India to a tie.
01:51And finally, the weather.
01:53Today's highs across the UAE will be 38 degrees Celsius, dropping to 30 degrees at night.
01:58That's all for now.
01:59Thanks for watching.
