00:00Dubai is taking street art to the next level with the unveiling of Dubai Canvas, an annual
00:13festival that celebrates art and culture with varying artistic themes each year.
00:18The festival celebrates art and culture and focuses on 3D pavement art, which is being
00:23showcased at the beach in Jumeirah Beach Residence.
00:26The inaugural art festival, which runs for a week, features local and international 3D
00:31artists who hold daily live performances free of charge.
00:34Eleven international artists have been invited to showcase 3D pavement art wherein images
00:40painted on the streets of any flat surface appear to be three-dimensional from certain
00:44angles.
00:45The 3D pavement art is a combination of the ancient form of pavement art itself, which
00:51used to be, we call two-dimensional, classical subjects, which didn't have the 3D effect.
00:58And when I started doing it in the early 80s, I used some of my perspective techniques that
01:04I had used at NASA to alter the geometry and therefore the forms could then rise out of
01:11the ground and look three-dimensional.
01:13I started off 20 years ago with painting, but that was only on walls and on canvas,
01:24making installations.
01:26And then five years ago, I started off with doing this kind of work also on the street,
01:34directly on the street, doing the optical illusions.
01:39Because it's such a special thing to do and not so many artists do that, I get invites
01:44from all over the world and now I'm stuck into this kind of art form.
01:48But I'm still learning and every day it's fun.
01:53The festival brings art shows away from the traditional confines of art galleries, in
01:58line with the thrust of organizers Brand Dubai to transform Dubai into an open-air museum.
