00:00Super Bowl 59 live radio row here in New Orleans Kansas City Chiefs and the
00:06Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday down the right side here inside the big game
00:09Marquez Valdez Scantling thanks for joining us today. Yeah thanks for having
00:12me. Now I just want to say how about this I was a wide receiver in the 1990s. Yes sir.
00:16You're much taller, much faster, much better than I was. How did you get to
00:19college and also that level of play where you said you know what I think I can make it
00:23in the pros? Um well believe it or not my journey to college was a little
00:28different than most. You know I didn't make my high school football team my
00:33freshman year. Wow. Yeah so I was you know the water boy if you want to call
00:39it my freshman year because I wasn't gonna make the team. Yeah. So I was
00:42kind of around and that's kind of over the next three years became obsessed
00:48with learning how to be better at the position. Met my wide receiver coach
00:53that summer and just became obsessive and annoying to learn how to be a better
00:59wide out and over the next three years it just kind of turned it to you know a
01:04good a good spot for me. Yeah. Baseball was my first sport and I ended up. What
01:09position did you play in baseball? Shortstop in centerfield. Man you could probably move it out there.
01:13Yeah so that was that was my first love first sport and then it was just too
01:18expensive to play with travel ball and my parents had two other kids
01:22they had to raise so it just couldn't be you know traveling all over the
01:25country with me. Yeah. So I just took football as the next thing for me and
01:30then it kind of just worked out. Where did you grow up? St. Petersburg, Florida.
01:35Did you? Yeah. So obviously a football hotbed you don't want to say if you want
01:38football players in football town you head down south and go to Florida to get
01:42those. What was your choice to go to college and why was it your choice? So I
01:45originally committed to North Carolina State. I saw that. And I was there for two
01:49years and had everything that I wanted. You know I had my major. It was the ACC.
01:55You know it was away from Florida. I wanted to get out of Florida and
01:59just the other parts of the world. Sure. And it was you know I got there my my
02:05freshman year and the starting quarterback broke his foot the first
02:09game of the season. Wow. And the offense kind of just shifted a little bit. Yeah.
02:14And then the next year we had Jacoby Brissett but the offense kind of stayed
02:17the same. Yeah. And it just wasn't a good fit for me so I decided to transfer to
02:20South Florida which is in Tampa. Yeah. It was about 45 minutes away from my
02:23hometown. Yeah. And you know I think that was the best decision for me. I was able
02:27to go there for two years and light it up. Yeah. Then get drafted to the
02:31Packers. Absolutely. Now you get to the Packers. Cold weather city up there but
02:35you had a great quarterback, a great offensive system. What did you think
02:38though because I'm always interested like you know dominant player let's just
02:41say in college you get to the pros. Yeah. What is that adjustment like for you?
02:44What was it in Green Bay? Well I mean for me I didn't care where I got drafted. I
02:50just didn't want to go anywhere cold and then I ended up in the coldest place
02:55that you can think of. But you know that was my first thought. Then my second
02:58thought was like I get to play with Aaron Rodgers and that was my favorite
03:01quarterback growing up. Yeah. I got to watch him you know on Monday night
03:04football or Sunday night football. Beat up on the Bears or the Vikings for
03:08years. Yeah. And so walking into it my first day and Aaron called me over to
03:13the table. He's sitting at the table with Clay Matthews, Randall Cobb, and
03:16Devontae Adams and he called me over by name and you know he was just like hey I
03:20think you're a good player. I think you can help this team out a lot and you
03:23know me as a kid from Southside St. Pete. Yeah. I'm looking at all these guys that
03:28I've watched on Sunday night football for years sitting at a table. You know
03:32that was like my welcome to the league moment and you know Aaron might not even
03:35remember that but it was just one of those things that stuck with me forever
03:39and I think that was just kind of you know let me know that I belong. Yes. He
03:44had faith in me from from day one. That's a huge deal too and also the type of wide
03:48receiver position you play not very many people can get deep like you. Yeah. Is it
03:52an acquired skill because the one thing that we always look at with wide
03:54receivers maybe not getting off the line or just fast guys that aren't football
03:58players but you do it all though. Yeah man I think it's a you know it's a
04:01testament to the strengths that I have. You know obviously being a 6'5
04:06receiver I can run 4-3. There's not many guys like that but you know over the
04:10years I've just learned how to you know use my strengths and and make them make
04:14something out of it and then obviously I want to continue to increase my game and
04:18you know be a complete all-around receiver which I think I've done over
04:21the last few years of just you know being you know around to be able to do
04:25different things in the offense whether it be catch screens or catch a slant you
04:29know or whatever even you know my short tenure and in New Orleans I was able to
04:34make a bunch of different plays. Yes you were. And I think that's just you know a
04:37testament to the coaches that I've had that believed in me and knew that I just
04:41wasn't a one-trick pony. Yeah it's hard to make the NFL as we know. It's even
04:45harder to win one championship. You got two championship rings and again it's a
04:48great place we're in New Orleans at the Super Bowl. The Chiefs are in it there.
04:51What makes the Chiefs so great? Is it the Holmes? Is it Reed? Is it everything
04:55around the organization? I think it's top to bottom. I think you know from the
04:59moment you walk in it's championship. That's the that's the goal you know the
05:05the first thing that you see every day in that team meeting room is you know
05:09like hey we're trying to win a championship. Yeah. You know that's that's
05:13the end goal for everything and I think everybody at that place believes in it
05:17and buys into it. Yeah. I think Coach Reed does a good job of just holding
05:20everybody to that standard every single day. There's not a single day where you
05:24know that that standard is not upheld and I think that is why you know they're
05:28you know a part of this great dynasty and I'm glad I was able to be there for
05:32you know those two years and win those two championships and I think there are
05:36three or four in the last five or six years. I mean there's you know that's a
05:40that's a hell of a run. Yeah. You know I'm just grateful that I was a part of it for
05:44those two years. Yep. Now also we're in New Orleans now. The Super Bowl is here.
05:47You play for the New Orleans Saints. What's the future like for you? Happy
05:50here in town? Quarterback situation obviously not like Aaron Rodgers at that
05:53point or Patrick Mahomes but an organization that certainly needs you
05:56and you got here you made plays. Yeah. People need to make plays. I actually love Derek. Yeah. I
06:02think he's a hell of a player. Yeah. I think he has the arm talent just like
06:06those other two guys that you named even when I even when I was with you know
06:09Buffalo for that short stint you know watching you know Josh play. Yeah. I think
06:14Derek has that same ability. Yeah. You know and I think he hasn't gotten the
06:17credit because he hasn't been on great teams that won a lot of games but you
06:21know just pure arm talent man he throws one of the best balls that I've that I've
06:24caught. Yeah. One of the easiest catches to make. Yeah. And he's such a great guy
06:30a great teammate and you know puts it all out on the line you know and I'm
06:34just excited to see what that future holds you know and obviously I fell in
06:38love with with the city. Yeah. Some of my family's from here. My dad's side of the
06:41family's from New Orleans. Really? Yeah. So you know this is like a second home
06:45for me. There you go. So just even coming here my grandma was super excited about me you
06:50know coming here I got to come to a game this year you know inside of the
06:54Superdome and it was it was amazing and so you know I got a lot of hope that we
06:59can figure something out and you know I can you know find a home for the rest of
07:03my career. There you go making it easy for the quarterback catching deep shots
07:06that's what we're about. Now the Super Bowl is coming. You won't get your third
07:08championship this year but the Eagles and the Chiefs do play. Who are you
07:11thinking in this game? Yeah I mean I'm always gonna always vote for my guys.
07:14Yeah. You know I've built up a lot of great relationships over there and you
07:18know selflessly I'm also rooting for them because then that makes that
07:21dynasty a little more real. Exactly. And I'm a part of that. Yeah. So I think that's a
07:26cool thing and I hope that they can get it done because like I said selfishly
07:29it'll look good on my resume to say I was a part of a dynasty that won two out
07:33of the three championships. Absolutely. Now you're down here obviously it's
07:36Super Bowl weekend. What are we looking forward to in the future for MVS? You got
07:39things going on like in your personal life here you're promoting stuff like
07:42where can we find you? Yeah man I'm you know I'm always doing stuff outside of
07:48sports. I think my biggest thing is fashion. I'm super into fashion. I have a
07:52fashion show that I do every year down in the Tampa Bay area. I have my own
07:56clothing line. Yeah. So I'm super excited about you know what that future looks
07:59like. You know I take a lot of pride in just doing things that find me
08:03interest. Yeah. I think fashion is that that space that I found a home in. You
08:09know even with my fashion show and bringing other NFL players out and you
08:13know some of their brands and you know just having some of those guys walk you
08:16know it's been it's been a truly fun experience. That's great. He's fast. He's
08:21fashionable. He's MVS. Thanks so much for joining us today. Thank you.
