00:00Live from New Orleans, Super Bowl 59, big game this weekend coming up Philadelphia Eagles
00:04and the Kansas City Chiefs.
00:06Donnie Wrightside, Joe Leeson, how about this, Marshall Newhouse, the big man on campus in
00:10the middle right here.
00:11All right, I love it.
00:12How's it going, guys?
00:13Doing real good.
00:14Great.
00:15Awesome.
00:16Let's get into it here, because 2010, you got a Super Bowl ring right out of the gate.
00:19Now, granted, sometimes you have to work your way into the lineup on a day-to-day basis,
00:23but a champion nonetheless.
00:25Tell me about your rookie year.
00:26Man, it was a blur.
00:28That being my first exposure, you get thrust into a team, you're like, all right, there's
00:31something here.
00:32Yeah.
00:33But people remember, we were a wildcard team, so we had some struggles that year.
00:36We lost some close games, and so I was learning literally how the best in the world, Charles
00:41Woodson, Aaron Rodgers of the world, responding to that adversity, and that made us a better
00:45team.
00:46And then the rest is history.
00:47We get our wildcard spot, and we go on this magical run, and man, it was impressive.
00:51Joe, let me ask you a question, because I like to take things personally.
00:54Were you in Philadelphia in 2010 for that playoff game?
00:57I was not there for the game.
00:59I just got put on IR, so they gave me the week off.
01:02So I was watching it, though, and I could feel the disappointment in the stadium.
01:06That was the Mike Vick Eagles.
01:07I know you guys had a feeling kind of way about that team, and you just ran into a buzzsaw,
01:12man.
01:13That's all it is.
01:14And sometimes teams get hot at the right time, because for me, sitting up there in the stands,
01:16we got close at the end.
01:17Deshaun Jackson just gets tripped up.
01:19The interception ends on the right.
01:20The way you guys go on the magical run.
01:22But I just wanted to say, you broke my heart, Mark.
01:24I'm sorry.
01:25He's a huge Eagle fan.
01:26He's talking about the birds.
01:27I'm sorry.
01:28Let me ask you this in regards to the Super Bowl.
01:30I always talk about preparation, the extra week, and what it means.
01:35How do you feel it can affect a team, especially two veteran teams like this?
01:39They played a couple of years ago.
01:41Do you see that potentially as being a factor for maybe some of the younger guys?
01:46I mean, I think there's enough experience where guys have given them the heads up on
01:49what this will be like.
01:50Because listen, they spent the first week after those championship games.
01:54It's normal.
01:55You're in pads.
01:56You're at the meetings.
01:57You're getting your lifts in.
01:58And then once you get here, they're like, all right, things get a little weird.
01:59You got the media day.
02:01And then you've got media availability.
02:03And they're still doing practice.
02:04But a little more walkthroughs.
02:05Everything's kind of a ramp down, focusing it in.
02:07So I think they're bringing their young guys along.
02:09But these are two veteran-laden crews.
02:11They're probably bored at this point.
02:12They're like, let's just play the game.
02:13I mean, they're ready to go, for sure.
02:15And offensive lineman, right?
02:16When you see Saquon Barkley, what does that mean to have a dynamic running back?
02:21Maybe you're not opening the hole, right?
02:23But you just give him a little seam and he can hit it and take it to the house at any
02:27given time.
02:28That changes everything.
02:29I think the most dynamic guy I've played with, I didn't get a chance to, I was 20, 17 was
02:33when we signed Marshall on and I was with Oakland.
02:36And it just changes the outlook because it wasn't like, you know, you felt like you had
02:39to be Superman before, especially as an offensive line unit.
02:42But you're like, all right, we need to like stalemate and stay on your guys, keep your
02:46feet moving.
02:47He's going to make you right.
02:48And that kind of availability and ability from a guy is incredible from a running back.
02:52And then knowing that they can take it to the house, you're just like, man, we have
02:55home run ability in the backfield.
02:57It's just a different feeling.
02:58Joe and I probably won the play in the NFL.
03:00Obviously, you look at us, we're not going to play there.
03:02But the things I love about it, because we always hear about the 10-time All-Pros.
03:05I stayed in one city for 13 years.
03:07Talk to me about changing cities because like us, like changing schools is hard enough.
03:11Changing professional careers in those different cities.
03:14Listen, I played 11 years, eight different teams and technically signed with nine different
03:19teams when I was here in New Orleans briefly.
03:22I wouldn't recommend it.
03:23It was difficult, but I learned how to be adaptive.
03:25I learned how to be resilient.
03:27And listen, not everyone can do what I did.
03:29I had to learn eight different playbooks.
03:32Sometimes on a moment's notice, 2019 specifically, I signed like week two or three with New England.
03:37I signed on a Wednesday on the dotted line, got thrust right into meetings and practice.
03:41I started at right tackle on Sunday.
03:44Then Isaiah Wynn, our left tackle, goes down and flip from right to left in the middle.
03:47There's not a lot of people in the world that can do that.
03:50And then we win the game.
03:51So listen, it's not for everyone, but it made me a stronger player, stronger person having
03:56to go through that.
03:57And I've made a lot of good friends and connections all over the place.
03:59So I'm grateful for my journey.
04:01It was definitely not an easy one, but I'm grateful.
04:03I did want to ask you about the Packers, right?
04:05And what you saw last year with Jordan Love, right?
04:09Huge expectations from that team.
04:11They maybe over exceeded expectations in terms of year one, beat up on Dallas as a six and
04:16a half point underdog, right?
04:18Almost challenged San Francisco.
04:20They were within striking distance.
04:23And then seeing where they were this past year, where they lost to Philadelphia, do
04:27you feel they're close to maybe getting back to the Super Bowl?
04:31Yeah.
04:32So we're staring at Lambeau Field kind of mock-up because they got the draft there.
04:36I went to talk to those guys earlier today and I said, they're close.
04:39Listen, the games they lost were in the division, they were tight.
04:43And I'm saying the thing they need to get over the hump is they either need the guys
04:45in-house or they need to find guys that can close games.
04:49They've got LeFleur and Jordan Love.
04:50They know they've got their quarterback.
04:51They have playmakers, but they need dogs.
04:54They need one or two guys on either side of the ball that when these games, the NFL, the
04:59margins are tight.
05:00The games come down to the last possessions.
05:02You need guys who will close things out, whether that's an elite pass rusher who closes things
05:06out, a receiver who makes just an incredible one-on-one matchup catch, or a running back
05:10who breaks an open field tackle and gets you the first down you need.
05:14You need guys that can close games out.
05:15The best teams have those guys.
05:17Miles Garrett?
05:18He's the type of guy.
05:19We'll see if they have the itch to sign.
05:22Green Bay normally doesn't have that kind of willingness to go sign a big 4-H and trade
05:28for a guy like Miles Garrett.
05:30But listen, there's a lot of Green Bay people that would love the idea of that.
05:33I'm not sure the front office will be on the same page, but the value of that guy is undisputed.
05:38So anybody would be lucky to have a guy like Miles Garrett.
05:39The closers, what they call them, as you said.
05:41I know Jacob said this week, boy, we would like to get one of those big-time number one
05:44wide receivers in town.
05:45We've had a couple of those in Green Bay.
05:47Let's talk Super Bowl.
05:48Big action on Sunday.
05:50Defensive lines, offensive lines.
05:51You're an offensive guy.
05:52What do you see from the trenches this weekend between the two?
05:54Some really big and important matchups.
05:57Specifically, Kansas City's offensive line has been in flux.
06:00They've got Joe Tooney, who's a guard, normally playing a left back.
06:02He's done a great, admirable job.
06:05That's not his primary place, but he's done an incredible job.
06:07And there's a reason they signed D.J. Humphries.
06:09There's a reason they kept Joe out there was a level of comfort that Pat had with him.
06:14But there's going to be a matchup there.
06:15I think the Eagles will be looking to see what they can do.
06:18Since he's made that move, Kansas City's run game has suffered because of it.
06:22We can be objective about that.
06:23And so we'll see how they kind of mitigate that.
06:25We saw in the Buffalo game, they came out through a lot of RPOs.
06:28They are an RPO team, but it's about getting quick passes out that aren't making the
06:33offensive line sit back there and drop in pass protection a bunch.
06:36So I'm looking for that matchup.
06:37We'll see if they can run the ball at all, at least to keep them honest and get some
06:41carries, knowing that Pat's going to still throw the ball to convert third downs.
06:44And on the other side, the Philly offensive line, they're just massive.
06:47I say physics wins at the end of the day.
06:49Yeah, they're all right.
06:50We'll see if Cam Juergens is back to himself.
06:52And that means Landon Dickerson could play his left guard spot.
06:54And let's see if they can do what they've been doing all year is paving holes for
06:58Saquon. But I imagine Steve Spagnuolo is going to load the box to see how they react
07:03and respond and make Jalen Hurts beat them.
07:06But the offensive line will be key for Philadelphia, for sure.
07:08I'm curious to know, because we've had a lot of discussions on the desk about
07:12personnel, Donnie and I believe it doesn't matter as long as you have Pat Mahomes on
07:17the center, you'll find a way to elevate and win the ballgame.
07:20Do you see that Kansas City maybe has regressed a little bit in regards to having
07:26Tyree kill in that explosive type of offense where they can score in 10 minutes, 10
07:31seconds flat, as opposed to the offense that they have now will play any type of game
07:35that you want? Yeah, I don't think regression is the right word.
07:38They've just changed. They're not that same team.
07:40They don't win the same way.
07:41And that's OK.
07:41And I think a lot of people have given them.
07:43It's weird that we're giving so much criticism to a team that finished 15 and two.
07:47And that's right.
07:48They really wanted to.
07:49But they just figured out different ways to win.
07:51And that means, you know, slowing the game down, making the team make a mistake and
07:54winning by a possession.
07:56And people saw that as a knock.
07:58And all year, I'm telling you, I'm like, these guys, this is intentional.
08:01They know who they are.
08:02They understand where they're good and where they're not.
08:04And they're getting games to the end of the game.
08:06And they're saying, Pat, go win us the game.
08:08And so that's not by accident.
08:10They don't they don't do things by accident.
08:12And so I don't think it's a regression.
08:14It's just him and Andy Reid reinventing themselves.
08:17I give them so much credit because a lot of teams don't have the mental capacity
08:21to be OK with the ego of like, oh, we're not explosive anymore.
08:24What do we do?
08:25They're like, OK, you want to play show?
08:27We're not explosive enough.
08:29We're just going to dig and dunk.
08:30We're going to figure things out.
08:31We're going to expose you in other different ways.
08:33And they have a joy doing it.
08:35We heard the Buffalo guy say Andy Reid came out and things we've never seen before.
08:39It's like, yeah, that's what good teams do is they find ways.
08:41Adaptability. That's what it is.
08:43You played a long time in the NFL.
08:44Now I know you're doing big things now.
08:46Tell the people where we can find your promotions.
08:48What do you got going on out there?
08:49Listen, it's been fun. I'm going to the dark side.
08:51I've been in sports media for a full year this year.
08:53I was doing the NFL show.
08:55You're great for it.
08:55I know.
08:56You're going to take a lot of our jobs.
08:57I've been doing an NFL preview show with Trey Wingo on DraftKings called
09:01Pre Game Power Up.
09:02That's been a lot of fun and hopefully doing more.
09:04I've been calling some games for college and hopefully pro.
09:07Trying to do as much as possible.
09:08It's been fun being close to the game.
09:10This is kind of Radio Rose, the culmination of all that.
09:13But doing stuff for the NFL and a little bit of college as well.
09:16It's been a lot of fun.
09:17So we'll see where that goes.
09:18But that's been my main.
09:19I have to ask you, TCU, we're big college guys.
09:22So Sonny Dykes, you know, you play in the national championship game
09:25a couple of years ago, didn't go your way.
09:27But can Sonny get them back to potentially a college football playoff?
09:31I think he can.
09:32Listen, that first year was just a really weird fever dream of,
09:35you know, they go on that run, but those were mostly not his guys.
09:38Those are Gary Patterson guys.
09:39I think he's they had a struggling year last year,
09:43and he's had to reinvent himself, too, with like,
09:46we got to win with our recruits.
09:47We got to find our way and kind of leave that that former legacy behind.
09:51And I think they're doing that right now.
09:52The transfer portal has helped that.
09:54They've got their signal caller and Josh Hoover, the guy that they trust.
09:57And they've got coordinators on both sides of the ball
10:00that once you get set on their system and they get their kind of recruits in,
10:03I think they're going to be competitive.
10:04It helps being in the Big 12, which is always a wide open, fun league.
10:08I think they're right there in the thick of things every year for the Big 12
10:11and the movement moving forward.
10:12And I believe in Sunday night system. Absolutely. Fantastic.
10:15The guy's versatile. It's Donnie Wright.
10:16Said it's Joe Lisi. We're sitting here.
10:17Super Bowl fifty nine radio.
10:18Thank you so much.
10:19Marshall House for joining us today.
10:21We really appreciate your guys. Absolutely. Thanks.
