00:00Now we have with us Ritchie Baccarin, a knife enthusiast for this day, and of course he will share with us about knife sports.
00:10Good morning!
00:11Yes, good morning Sir Ritchie!
00:14Hello Sheila and Paolo, and good morning to all the viewers of PTD Sports.
00:18Yes, let's start with our story, Sir Ritchie, what is knife sports?
00:26Alright, knife sports is a brainchild of a martial arts practitioner, Dr. Sixto Carlos of the Carlos Hermanos Fight Club.
00:36It started in 2018.
00:39Knife sports is a sports tournament based on knife fighting.
00:43It's safe, it's fun, it's easy to play, and anybody can join, whether you are a man or a woman.
00:52Both men and women can join.
00:56So it is played by two players, they're equipped with what we call competition knives as you can see on the video.
01:03And then to win, a competitor must score points against his opponent.
01:07So every hit of our competition knife has a point.
01:13So knife sports was created to be a platform for knife enthusiasts, knife practitioners from different knife schools and disciplines
01:23to test their skills and hone their natural abilities in knife fighting.
01:29In a very controlled, safe, and sports-oriented format.
01:34So knife sports is a sport, not a martial art.
01:38Oh, okay.
01:39But sir, can you tell us when this started here in the Philippines?
01:43Because I've seen this before with military personnel.
01:46It's like a practice or a duel.
01:49When was this established here in the Philippines?
01:55Correct.
01:56As you can see, knife fighting is considered a part of our art forces.
02:01The Philippines is famous for Filipino martial arts and Kali.
02:05In fact, Kali and Filipino martial arts are taught even in armed forces in other countries.
02:11Now, with regards to knife sport, this was established in 2018.
02:16We don't have a sports-based platform where our knife practitioners can practice.
02:23And also, if you're interested in it, it's a little bit scary, right?
02:28It's a little bit scary.
02:31How can I play knife fighting without getting hurt?
02:34And where can I play?
02:35So, based on that, we thought of a way or a platform or competition wherein all of the knife enthusiasts,
02:43all of our players, can play knife fighting.
02:47And even if you don't know how, because that's how knife sports is.
02:51Even if you're not very skilled, you can actually compete in knife sports.
02:56Because the movements are very athletic and natural, as you can see in the video.
03:01You don't have to be an expert knife practitioner to enjoy and compete.
03:08Yes, knife sports are very interesting.
03:11Sir Richie, because I tried the Krav Maga, I tried the Arnis.
03:17The Arnis, they are expanding on the use of knives in the Arnis.
03:24In the Krav Maga, they also use knives, but both are a form of self-defense.
03:29This is my first time to hear that knife sports are really a sport.
03:35Which is a really good thing.
03:37But let's talk about this.
03:38Sir, how did you end up in knife sports?
03:43So, in knife sports, as I said in the beginning, Dr. Sixto Carlos is a brainchild of mine.
03:50And so, we noticed that there are a lot of weapons-based tournaments in the Philippines.
03:56Because we are the home of Filipino martial arts, so Kali and Arnis, right?
04:00And we have a lot of tournaments on that.
04:02But we observed that the organization is not good.
04:06Sometimes, the competition is too long.
04:09Sometimes, you enter the competition in the morning, then you play in the evening.
04:15And then you get eliminated quickly.
04:17So, if you are a competitor, it's a bit hard, right?
04:20And so, Dr. Sixto was also an avid fencer.
04:24So, he observed in fencing tournaments that their competitions are well-structured and organized.
04:30So, what we did was, we adapted the scoring format and how fencing tournaments are organized.
04:36So, fencing being an Olympic sport, it's very scientific.
04:42And their scoring system, it will really show the skill level of the player.
04:48And it's very fast-paced.
04:50So, what happened was, with knife sport as a format, it's faster.
04:54And, for example, if there are 10 players, you will be able to fight all of them.
04:59So, you get to compete many, many times.
05:01And you will be able to fight all the competitors who are joining the competition.
05:06That's how we got into knife sport.
05:10But, Sir Richie, I just want to ask.
05:12Knife sport, right?
05:14When you say knife sport, it's a dangerous sport, right?
05:17And you've mentioned earlier that it is a safe sport.
05:23But, can you tell us what equipment is used here?
05:29Is it a real knife?
05:32No, it's not.
05:34Yes.
05:35We are very safe.
05:36So, first of all, of course, the safety of the players is our priority.
05:41As you can see in the video.
05:42So, the primary equipment is a padded knife.
05:45That is around 14 inches long.
05:48It's padded.
05:49It's soft, but also firm.
05:51So, when you slash or stab, you won't get hurt.
05:55And also, the players are required to wear protective equipment.
05:58As you can see in the video.
05:59There is either a fencing mask or the traditional Arnis helmet for head protection.
06:04And then lastly, we have padded gloves for head protection.
06:07And groin guards, of course, so that when there is an accidental hit to the groin,
06:11our players are protected.
06:13So far, no one has been injured by our players.
06:17And everybody, after a tournament, they are very happy because they are very tired.
06:23And they've really enjoyed the competition.
06:26That's good to hear, Sir Richie.
06:28But, is there a type of knife that is used here?
06:32I have a Karambit.
06:34Can you use that, Sir?
06:38So, unfortunately, we only limit the shape of the knife to standardize it,
06:43to be fair to the players.
06:45Because that's one of the things that we try to do.
06:48We try to standardize the system so that it will ultimately be a legitimate mainstream sport.
06:54So, that's our approach.
06:56KnifeSport is not a martial arts system.
06:59It's really a sports-based format based on knife fighting.
07:02So, we will standardize the equipment.
07:05So, every KnifeSport you go to,
07:07it will look different.
07:09The equipment will look different.
07:10Our branding will look different.
07:12Our gameplay will look different.
07:15So, that's really our goal is to standardize the sport
07:18using, of course, the best equipment possible for the sport as well.
07:23For less complicated equipment.
07:27You mentioned earlier, Sir Ritchie, that this sport was patterned from fencing
07:33because it's organized and all that.
07:35You've also mentioned about the format.
07:37But can you tell us more about the format?
07:40And how is the scoring in KnifeSport?
07:45Alright. So, the scoring is very simple.
07:47Like you said, it's very simple and easy to play.
07:49So, you only have 30 seconds to play.
07:52And that's the beauty of our format.
07:54Because in 30 seconds, it's all action.
07:57As you can see in the videos, from 0 seconds to 30 seconds,
08:00it's very playable.
08:02But also, from a spectator point of view,
08:04when you watch it, it's really exciting to watch.
08:08So, that's one thing.
08:12What else?
08:15Not only is it exciting, but…
08:16The scoring system and target on the body.
08:20Don't you have particular points?
08:22For the face? Is the score higher?
08:25Yes, we do.
08:27So, we have 2 points for the head and torso,
08:29and then 1 point for the arms and legs.
08:31So, that's our scoring system.
08:33And then, you only have 30 seconds to play.
08:36And then, within those 30 seconds,
08:38either you score 5 points and the match is over,
08:40or you can run the clock.
08:42And within those 30 seconds, you can also play.
08:46That's why in our video, the two players are very aggressive.
08:49Because it's only 30 seconds, so you really need to be able to score.
08:53But Sir Richie, can you slice the foot so that it won't be able to stand?
08:59Yes, you can.
09:00There are matches where they're all like a 4-all.
09:04And then, the one who will really dive will hit the foot.
09:08And then, the competitor will be surprised.
09:10Hey, he hit the foot.
09:11So, there are instances like that that are surprising.
09:15Because it's also an accepted technique,
09:17that you hit the feet.
09:19That's also doable.
09:23So, for me, I can do it with my shoulders so that it won't be able to stand.
09:26You're amazing with your ideas.
09:29But that's the aggressiveness when it comes to this sport, right?
09:32Sir, for now, let's talk about the community of knife sport.
09:36If I'm not mistaken,
09:37our teammates who are watching right now are not that familiar.
09:42But how is the situation of the community of this sport?
09:47So far, we've organized 19 competitions.
09:50Within those 19 competitions,
09:53we saw that our participants are very diverse and dynamic.
09:58Of course, most of our competitors,
10:01they come from different martial arts backgrounds.
10:04So, you would assume that they're from the army or the cali.
10:08But it's different.
10:09We have Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coaches joining.
10:12We have Olympic wrestling coaches or Olympic wrestling players playing.
10:17Judo, Muay Thai, Boxing.
10:20Because all of those movements, they translate to knife naturally.
10:24So, that's one.
10:25And then, another thing is,
10:27they all come from different walks of life.
10:29We have chefs, we have IT professionals,
10:32we have doctors, we also have soldiers.
10:35So, they're all united by their passion for knife and knife combat.
10:39So, actually, that's one of the things that we want to emphasize.
10:43Whether you are from another school or whatever your background is,
10:47you are welcome to join knife sport.
10:49You can join us.
10:51Are there divisions or categories,
10:54mentioned, Sir Ritchie,
10:56that anyone can join here,
10:59women or men.
11:00But when it comes to the competition itself,
11:02are there divisions that are the same age range or division?
11:06I mean, is there such a thing?
11:10Eventually, we might have to put in weight divisions.
11:14But for now, they're all mixed.
11:16Even the ages, they're mixed.
11:18So, there was actually a joke that,
11:20you can still introduce senior divisions,
11:24for those who are a bit older.
11:27So, we said, yes, you can.
11:29It depends.
11:30Yes, you can.
11:32And there's also a female division.
11:35But what we've observed also is that,
11:39females can fight for the meal.
11:42Because knife is a great equalizer.
11:44Like in our last sport, knife sport 19,
11:46there was one single woman who joined,
11:49and she finished third place,
11:52among 15 competitors.
11:54And the competitors are big, fast, and strong.
11:58But she managed to climb up the ranks,
12:01and then she finished third place.
12:03She's really good.
12:04So, it's possible.
12:06Because it's a knife.
12:08It's a knife. It's an equalizer.
12:10You've mentioned earlier, Sir Richie,
12:12that different people from different schools can join.
12:17Are there any restrictions?
12:21Because when it comes to school,
12:22we know that knife sport,
12:24when you say knife, it's really tough, right?
12:27Yes.
12:28Is there anything like that in schools?
12:31Rebinders or precautions?
12:35Of course, part of our safety protocols as well is,
12:40I think it's the mindset also.
12:43Because we always tell our competitors,
12:47this is not knife fighting.
12:49We're not teaching martial arts.
12:51We're doing this to play.
12:54So, let's enjoy.
12:55So, it means,
12:56when you come into the competition,
12:58no bad vibes, no bad intent.
13:01And we're all here as a community to share the space
13:05so that we can compete,
13:07and then show our techniques,
13:09and then share.
13:10It's really having fun and sharing.
13:12So, within that mindset,
13:14I think we're trying to foster this really safe mindset.
13:18So, we're not really encouraging,
13:21or saying,
13:22let's have a fight,
13:23we're not like that.
13:24So, it's the mindset that we're encouraging for.
13:27And that also hits the safety aspect of it.
13:30Because we're sports,
13:31so we have to have the sportsman-like thinking.
13:36So, it's a sport.
13:38Being a sportsman,
13:39that's what it means.
13:41So, how do you invite,
13:43how do you invite individuals,
13:46or other athletes,
13:47or anyone,
13:49to be interested or try this sport?
13:54I'm glad you asked that,
13:55because we regularly promote our competitions on our Facebook page.
14:01And then, also through our circles,
14:03because weapons practitioners in the Philippines,
14:06they have their common groups on social media.
14:09And that's how we promote our competitions,
14:12and where we invite people,
14:13where we announce our competitions.
14:15And also through your programs,
14:16and thank you very much for inviting us,
14:18we are able to publicize and share our humble sports platform
14:24for everybody to join and participate in.
14:28But Sir Richie,
14:29I just want to ask,
14:30what is your personal goal here at KnifeSport in the Philippines?
14:38So, at first when we started,
14:40we really wanted to make weapons,
14:43to modernize weapons-based competitions.
14:46Because,
14:48the way of the tournaments from before is a bit stuck in the past,
14:54so we wanted to modernize that.
14:56So, we're getting there slowly but surely.
14:59But personally,
15:00it's really to make weapons-based competitions more mainstream,
15:03more acceptable.
15:04Because knifemen are scary, right?
15:06So, there's a stigma against it.
15:09So, we want to sort of break that stigma
15:11and show that knife fighting is also an art.
15:16It shouldn't be treated like something violent that only criminals do.
15:20Because we have a lot of knife aficionados,
15:23a lot of knife appreciators.
15:25So, let's give them a platform where they can express their knife arts
15:29in a safe and fun environment.
15:31True.
15:32Now, Sir,
15:33since you already mentioned that this is your chance,
15:36if you have a message
15:37or you want to bring it to the athletes
15:40or those who are interested in trying this sport,
15:44you may go ahead and invite them in your upcoming events.
15:48Hey, guys!
15:49I'd like to invite everybody,
15:51all the knife players
15:54or any martial artists
15:56who are interested in playing in our competition,
15:59please visit us or find us on Facebook
16:01and message us.
16:03We will be having our next competition next month.
16:06It will be in Metro Manila.
16:07Please stay tuned on our social media channels
16:13for our next competitions.
16:16Thank you so much to our teammates
16:19who want to try a different sport.
16:22This is a must try, a knife sport.
16:25Thank you so much, Mr. Chibakirin.
16:27Yes.
