00:00PTV Sports is back with us via Zoom with Hayley Garcia, a Filipino gymnast who won a medal in the Philippines and America.
00:11Good morning Hayley and welcome to PTV Sports.
00:14Welcome to PTV Sports Hayley.
00:17Hayley, how are you? How are you this morning?
00:24I'm good.
00:26Hayley, tell us how you started in gymnastics, how you became interested and when did you start really training for you to learn gymnastics?
00:39When I was in Grade 1, I started gymnastics when I was 5 or 6 years old and I was a really hyper kid.
00:51I always ran and jumped so my mom thought that I should join gymnastics and that's the sport that stuck with me until now.
01:03So that's part of it, it's effective when you have a hyper kid.
01:07Yes, gymnastics. You know the one where you jump on the bed?
01:11Yes, that's a good skill set.
01:14Hayley, this year has been very successful for you.
01:17Even your campaign abroad in UOGA and then in Spring Hope and now here in Gab, you won a medal.
01:25How is your experience competing both international and here locally and what are the challenges?
01:32I'm very happy. The only challenge is that my uncle got hurt because I did a short landing on the floor.
01:45But I'm also happy that I was able to do a podium finish.
01:49Was it hard for you competing because I believe you had an uncle sprain during the competition?
02:00My coach took good care of my uncle. He's the coach there.
02:06He's the one who does the therapy for my uncle and he's also the one who tapes my uncle to protect him before I compete.
02:13How did you overcome that? You know that you have an injury but you still pushed through and bagged the medal.
02:23How did that change your mindset?
02:30I just focused on my goal. My goal is to do a podium finish and be safe in the competition.
02:38We thought that in order for me to compete well, we upgraded my skills so that my uncle won't get hurt and I can compete well.
02:54Apart from her successful campaign this year, Hailey also dominated the Batang Pinoy last year of all events.
03:05Hailey, what is your favorite part of all the apparatus in gymnastics?
03:11My favorite part is the bars because I like the feeling of flying and getting back on the bar.
03:24When you do the bars, you look like you're flying.
03:29Is there a flying factor especially when you do the uneven bars?
03:34Or for you, your adrenaline level is really high and it's not for you anymore?
03:39My focus is to compete happily and the adrenaline takes most of it.
03:53Hailey, are you thinking about your future? For example, competing for the national team in big competitions.
04:04Even now, you're competing.
04:07Of course, the biggest partners are the Asian Games, Olympics, Southeast Asian Games.
04:14Are you thinking about your future, joining those kinds of competitions?
04:22Yes, I really want to be able to compete in the Asian Champs and SEA Games this year.
04:27I'm working hard to achieve my goals.
04:32Is there a chance that you'll be able to play in the SEA Games this year?
04:38Yes, if I can join the national team, there's a chance that I'll be able to play in the SEA Games this year.
04:46That's very promising.
04:48You know, Hailey, you're still very young.
04:50Who is your gymnastics idol so far, both international and local? And why?
04:58Rebecca Andrade is my international idol in Brazil because she had three ACL injuries.
05:08I had an ACL injury two years ago, so she was my inspiration while I was recovering.
05:18It's a good thing that she doesn't have a strong heart because for her to be injured,
05:25it's a very serious injury, especially in the world of gymnastics.
05:31Go on, Hailey, you were saying something earlier.
05:34And in the local, of course, Carlos Yulo is my idol.
05:41Of course, partner. Of course, Golden Boy Kaloy is the idol of many, especially our young gymnasts.
05:48And did you notice, partner, that after Kaloy, our local gymnasts are following up
05:53that the world of gymnastics is really expanding internationally, not just here in the local competition.
06:00Hailey, the Olympians who won medals in the Paris Olympics in 2024,
06:08they said that when Heidelin won gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,
06:16it was like an eye-opener for them that a Filipino can win such a medal.
06:23Did Carlos Yulo's victory in the Paris Olympics have the same effect on you?
06:30Even though you were just starting your career.
06:34Yes, it gave me a lot of hope and I was very excited for him.
06:42He was my inspiration and the reason why I wanted to join the national team
06:50and why I wanted to go to the Olympics.
06:53Hailey, after the Gap Challenge Cup, are there other competitions that you are preparing for?
06:59Yes, next week, I have a regional championship and I hope to be able to enter the nationals.
07:11Alright, Hailey, thank you very much and have a good day.
