00:00Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:16We begin with the news, stay with us.
00:36Israeli forces continue their operations against Palestinian territory, this time with arrest
00:41and raid in Jammun and Al-Fara camps in the West Bank.
00:45For the third consecutive day, Israeli soldiers carry out illegal raids and also besiege Palestinian
00:51settlers in the south of the occupied city of Tubas.
00:54The Palestinian Prisoners' Society denounced that the Sionist troops kidnapped 14 Palestinian
00:59civilians.
01:00In addition, they denounced the incursion of the Army of Tel Aviv in that territory
01:05which causes food shortages while destroying the infrastructure, affecting the supply of
01:10basic services such as electricity and drinking water in several areas of the city.
01:22The Palestinian government condemned the interference threats of the United States regarding the
01:27appropriation of the Gaza Strip after the displacement of its citizens.
01:32President Mahmoud Abbas assured that they will not allow the violation of the rights
01:36of the Palestinian people who have struggled for decades to achieve the freedom of an independent
01:42state.
01:43Abbas also reaffirmed that the calls of Trump's administration seriously violate international
01:48law and urged the United Nations to take urgent measures to protect citizens.
01:53On the other hand, the Palestinian president welcomed Saudi Arabia's position of defending
01:57an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
02:04The government of China condemns the statements of the President of the United States, Donald
02:08Trump, to take control of the Gaza Strip.
02:11The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Lin Jian, manifested his opposition
02:17to the forced displacement of the Gazan people.
02:19This in view of the declarations of the United States administration that the Palestinians
02:25should settle in the nations of Jordan and Egypt, labelling the Gaza Strip as uninhabitable.
02:31Beijing urges consideration of a ceasefire and post-conflict management in the enclave
02:37in order to establish a political solution in both states.
02:42Also in this context, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also rejected Trump's
02:47proposal to take over the Gaza Strip, arguing that it is the Palestinians who should take
02:53care of their territory.
02:54Let's listen.
02:55The ones who should take care of Gaza are the Palestinians.
03:01They need to receive reparations for everything that was destroyed so they can rebuild their
03:06homes, hospitals and schools and live with dignity.
03:13The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Palestine, Francesca Alvaniz, rejected
03:18President Donald Trump's proposal to take over the Gaza Strip and to settle its people.
03:25Also, the United Nations official called on the international community to take a stand
03:38against the U.S. and also to protect the right of the Palestinian people to live on their
03:44land.
03:45Let's listen to her statements.
03:48Unlawful, immoral and irresponsible.
03:54It's completely irresponsible because it will make the regional crisis even worse.
04:00And I truly hope that people will stay calm, will not panic and will remember that the
04:06international community is made of 193 states.
04:11And this is the time to give the U.S. what it has been looking for, isolation.
04:21For their part, France also reiterated its rejection of any forced displacement of Palestinians
04:27in the Gaza Strip, warning that this was a subject of imbalance in the Middle East.
04:34France is fully opposed to population displacements.
04:38This is a subject of imbalance in the Middle East, obviously, which is contrary to the
04:42two-state solution that we have been advocating for years.
04:48I would add that declarations are probably dangerous for stability and for the peace
04:52process which is underway.
04:56We still have hostages, we have possible destabilization of this territory which has been under fire
05:02for too many years and therefore, we are sticking to our policy which is, no population displacements,
05:11the search for a temporary ceasefire towards a peace process and a two-state solution.
05:20The Lebanese government demanded the total withdrawal of Israeli forces from the occupied
05:24territories and the cessation of Israeli infringements in accordance with the ceasefire agreement.
05:30Joseph Owen, President of Lebanon, called for working for the release of Lebanese prisoners
05:35according to the agreement terms.
05:38In addition, the 5th Armed Forces Brigade carried out debris clearance and road reopening
05:44operations in southern Lebanon.
05:46They also denounced that since the conclusion of this 60-day period for the expulsion of
05:51Israel, this Tel Aviv army intensified its attacks, bombed forests and set fire to houses.
06:02And now we have a short break coming up, but don't go away, we'll be right back.
06:08Welcome back to From the South.
06:22And as the election campaign in Ecuador draws to a close, Luisa González, the candidate
06:26for the Citizen Revolution, endorses her recommendations for the nation's institutional and social
06:31recovery.
06:32González had campaign closings in Quevedo, Vinces, Ventanas and Barbajo, among other
06:39towns in the province of Los Rios.
06:41Amid the events, the presidential candidate said that if she wins the elections, the first
06:46actions she will take include creating security offices with the judicial authorities, restoring
06:51the country's institutionality and reducing the VAT to 15% by decree.
06:58The candidate has gotten a lot of support on her tours and has declared that Revive
07:02Ecuador will be her government's motto.
07:11We stay in Ecuador, where the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights denounced
07:15the death of another 14-year-old minor and the forced disappearance of 27 people at the
07:20hands of the military.
07:22The victim's father, Milton Rodríguez, informed that his children's only sin was
07:27to run home in fear of the deployment of the public forces in an operation in Guayaquil's
07:34Guasmo neighborhood.
07:35He also said that the minor died from the impact of four shots in different parts of
07:40his torso and in the back of his neck, although the national police are processing the case
07:46at a legitimate use of force and described the minor as a member of a criminal group.
07:52For this reason, the committee denounced gross human rights violations and racism in the
07:58arrest by state agents and in other information we go to Argentina, where the government ordered
08:03the withdrawal of the country from the World Health Organization and affirmed that it will
08:08not allow interventions by foreign organizations that threaten its sovereignty.
08:14President Javier Milley ordered the withdrawal this Wednesday and affirmed that he had already
08:19given instructions to Foreign Minister Gerardo Wertheim to define the definitive exit from
08:25the World Health Organization.
08:27Milley said that the decision comes as a result of the differences with the organization regarding
08:33health management.
08:34The president emphasized that this decision will not affect the country because they do
08:38not receive resources from the World Health Organization and that it will also allow health
08:43policies to be implemented, according to the interests of Argentinians.
08:54In Argentina, the State Workers' Union remains in a state of alert and assembly after the
08:59government's proposal to increase public administration salaries by only 1.5% in January and 1.2%
09:07in February.
09:08According to the Argentine State Workers' Association, the public identity is not improving,
09:14but on the contrary, it is worsening and deepening the crisis of income in the sector.
09:19They also point out that in order to achieve fiscal balance, the pockets of the state employees
09:24and retirees are being robbed.
09:26Meanwhile, they point out that in the next few days, this gap will be accentuated, for
09:32which reason they urge the org to organize a strike to demand salaries in accordance
09:36with the current context.
09:44The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, admitted that the great majority of the commitments
09:48acquired by his administration have not been fulfilled.
09:52On Wednesday morning, it was announced that several officials resigned.
09:55During the live transmission of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, the head of state
10:00expressed his frustration with the lack of execution of his government's programs, qualifying
10:06as fatal the report of non-compliances that 146 out of 195 commitments were not fulfilled.
10:15The president insisted on the need to transform the government apparatus in order to advance
10:20in the changes established in his agenda.
10:23Petro stressed that many of his proposals face bureaucratic obstacles and lack of will
10:28from his own ministers.
10:31But I want to leave my concerns because this is the report of non-compliance and it is
10:39fatal and I say this to the people because I am ashamed.
10:44Out of 195 commitments, 146 have not been fulfilled.
10:50The revolutionary president but not the government and the government does not because individually
10:55they have parallel agendas.
10:58After the presentation of the internal study on the non-fulfillment of his commitments,
11:03President Gustavo Petro wrote in his ex-account,
11:05Yesterday, a study of the number of commitments made to the people and the high percentage
11:10of non-fulfillment in a differential manner in the ministries was presented to the Council
11:16of Ministers.
11:17I decided to expose it to the people in order to obtain the cabinet's response on his non-compliance.
11:24It was preferred to evade the response and launch the cannibalistic and self-destructive
11:30attack that is a historical tradition not only of the left but also of Colombia.
11:35The government will be adjusted according to the level of execution of each ministry.
11:40I want in the remaining time, and after great progress in some matters and little progress
11:45in others, a united and transparent government facing the people and with the people.
11:51I do not want a government with double agendas, but neither do I want a government of a single
11:56color because the people are multicolored.
11:58It is the people who are in charge, no one else.
12:09After Petro's statements on the non-compliance of his government, the Minister of Interior,
12:14Juan Fernando Cristo, urged all the heads of the portfolios of Petro's government to
12:19resign so that the head of state can reorganize his administration.
12:23Cristo affirmed that the Colombian president is not satisfied with the result of his cabinet.
12:28Meanwhile, he highlighted his disagreement on the publication of the management report
12:33and assured that Petro must have limits.
12:44In addition, the Minister of Culture, Arts and Knowledge of Colombia, Juan Correa, presented
12:49his resignation by means of a letter expressing the following.
13:19For his part, former Foreign Minister Arbalo Leiva Durán said,
13:49I tried to guide him by means of the mechanism within the rich.
13:54A state of decomposition is in the air.
13:56I'm not inventing anything.
13:58Perhaps the homeland has to overcome this calamity.
14:01I repeat the question I asked before.
14:04Will it be their foretaste of something more profound for which we Colombians must prepare ourselves?
14:10We are heading for a second short break, but don't go away.
14:41Welcome back to From the South.
14:43The Speaker of the Lower House of the Russian Parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, stated that
14:48the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, must be held accountable
14:53for crimes against humanity.
14:55The head of the state, Duma, accused the USAID of financing research on biological weapons,
15:00orchestrating coups d'état in several countries through organizations linked to terrorist networks.
15:06Volodin described the agency as a true criminal network, with a presence in more than 100
15:12countries and an annual budget of between $50 and $60 billion.
15:17The official detail that the agency is currently closed since its liquidation is being reviewed.
15:23If so, those responsible for such crimes will be punished.
15:26In Sweden, authorities reported Tuesday 11 people killed after a shooting at an adult
15:41education centre in Örebro, west of Stockholm.
15:44The Swedish police reported that the number of injured is not yet clear.
15:49However, six people remain in Örebro University Hospital.
15:53Currently, authorities believe that the shooter acted alone and ruled out the possibility
15:58that he is linked to criminal gangs of terrorist organizations.
16:01Students and teachers were housed in other neighbouring schools for hours until the police
16:06were able to secure the scene.
16:18In the Philippines, the House of Representatives impeached Vice President Sara Duterte after
16:23she was charged with corruption.
16:24During a plenary meeting, the decision was made after at least 250 legislators signed
16:30a petition for the official's impeachment.
16:32They also said that Duterte has faced four impeachment complaints from lawmakers and
16:38leftist activities groups on various issues, including the death threat she made against
16:43the nation's president and his wife.
16:45The House of Representatives indicated that a special session could be convened to allow
16:50the signing to bring Duterte to a speedy trial.
16:59China and Pakistan strengthen bilateral strategic cooperation ties with the signing of new agreements
17:05in Beijing.
17:06At the Great People's Palace in the Chinese capital, the leaders of the two countries
17:10signed agreements in areas such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, trade, technology and media.
17:17The Chinese head of state, Xi Jinping, expressed his desire for Islamabad to benefit from the
17:22reforms and high-level opening up being carried out by Beijing.
17:26For his part, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his country's interest
17:31in learning from the experience of the People's Republic, especially in terms of modernisation
17:36and industrialisation, while thanking China for its support for Pakistan's economic
17:41and social development.
17:47This February 5th marks the 58th anniversary of the death of Chilean singer and songwriter
18:09Violeta Parra, symbol of Chilean music for the world.
18:13Violeta Parra had an artistic talent that showed itself in different shades as a radio
18:17artist, folkloric composer, plastic artist and poet.
18:22Her music was able to reach a massive audience thanks to the effective relation that Parra
18:27had with the music industry, becoming an example of a harmonious relationship between art and
18:32industry.
18:33Her life was marked by several trips, both inside and outside of Chile, experiences that
18:39gave her a broad cultural background, becoming a kind of identity from Chile to the world.
18:44On February 1st 1967, Violeta Parra committed suicide.
18:48She suffered depression because of the intensity she put in her work and in the simplest aspects
18:55of her life.
18:56And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief, but remember you can find
19:09this and many other stories on our website at www.telusinenglish.net.
