00:00The International Holocaust Remembrance Day was held for the millions of victims of the most heinous crime in history.
00:09This is the story of Gav Villegas.
00:14The Embassy of Israel in the Philippines and the Jewish Community
00:18held the International Holocaust Remembrance Day where the memory of the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis and their fellow citizens was held.
00:26The occasion was attended by Education Undersecretary Gina Gonong, Foreign Affairs Deputy Assistant Secretary Marlo Miranda,
00:32Gabriel Quezon-Avancena, one of the descendants of former President Manuel Alquezon, and other members of the Diplomatic Corps.
00:39In his speech, the Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines, Ilan Flos, said that the world should not forget
00:45one of the most heinous crimes in the history of mankind.
00:49The Nazis came horrifyingly close to succeeding.
00:54One third of the Jewish population was annihilated.
00:58Our nation never recovered and we're not close, even today, to this number.
01:04Israel is also responsible for the rise of anti-Semitism beliefs in different parts of the world.
01:10In the latest survey of EDL Global 100 when it comes to anti-Semitism, the Philippines ranked 53rd.
01:18In 2014, only 3% of Filipinos participated in the survey that expressed their anti-Semitic views.
01:25After 10 years, it rose to 42%.
01:29The reason for this is the conflict between Israel and the Hamas group and other terrorist groups.
01:35This is alarming. The Philippines is a country that we are always proud.
01:40Not only that there is no anti-Semitism in the Philippines,
01:44but the Philippines, during the time of President Quezon, has gave safe haven for 1,300 Jewish refugees
01:52wherein no other country opened the gates.
01:55In the speech of Education Undersecretary Gina Gonong,
01:58the followers of Henerson should not forget the lessons from the past.
02:03Today's commemoration is not just about remembering the past.
02:06It's about reaffirming our commitment to an education that will help our youth reject hate,
02:13embrace diversity, and work to create a future where unity triumphs over division.
02:20The candle-lighting ceremony was also held and six candles were lit to symbolize the 6 million Jews who were killed.
02:27A photo exhibit containing photos taken during the Holocaust was also opened.
02:32In 1939, President Quezon allowed the entry of 1,300 Jews in the Philippines from 1937 to 1941.
02:41In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly passed the resolution of January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
02:51Gabo Milde Villegas for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
