00:00Cue the snow globe. Houston got the assignment after more than three inches of snow fell in the fourth largest city in the country that is more accustomed to Texas heat than an Arctic blast.
00:13I woke up, looked out the window and it was just snow constantly. You know, all the cars were covered, the streets were covered and all that stuff. So, you know, immediately I knew I had to head out here and try sledding.
00:27A coating of the white powder blanketed downtown Houston on Tuesday. A rarity in this part of the country that has a black belt in flooding and tropical weather. But old man winter, not so much.
00:40I went for a run this morning and seeing all the snow pour down and seeing it accumulate over the past few hours has been something magical.
00:48Now, this is definitely what you would call a snow day in Houston. Lots of cheers going on for hours here on Miller Hill. This is not a common occurrence, as you know, one for the history books. And even though this is something they're not used to and they're cold, they're having a great time.
01:04Houston officials say they haven't dealt with a winter storm of this magnitude in over 50 years. An afternoon of sunshine and warmer weather allowed much of the soft powder to melt off, which then turned into a frozen, slushy mess in the pre-dawn hours on Wednesday.
01:21At least two more sub-freezing nights are in the forecast before the big thaw begins. Until then, Houston will continue to weather the cold leftovers of one of the biggest winter storms to hit the Gulf Coast in decades.
