00:00Sure, Superman may look the same, but no. No, he's not the same.
00:04Here's a look at the McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse Action Comics Gold Label Collection Superman.
00:26The Man of Steel is not impervious to harm.
00:28He is weakened and will eventually die if he is exposed to kryptonite, radioactive remnants of his own homeworld.
00:33He has no defense against magic, and his mind will succumb to sufficient sonic assault.
00:36But his real vulnerability is dependence on yellow solar radiation.
00:40Deprived of that, he'll become a mere mortal.
00:42If anything can be said for this krypton, at least he has a cloth cape.
00:45Before we look at that cloth cape and all the things that are connected to it,
00:48taking first, though, the tape measure and see how tall the Gold Label Collection Action Comics Superman actually stands.
00:53This figure I actually found at Walmart, which was a good find.
00:56I mean, I was going there for everything else but action figures.
00:59I just happened to go down the toy aisle, and this one guy was sitting on the shelf calling to me.
01:03Hey, hey, come over here.
01:05I said, wait, what? Are you talking to me?
01:08My daughter says, no, I wasn't talking to you.
01:10Then I realized, though, that Superman was talking to me, and I added this guy to my cart.
01:13My daughter also said, didn't you already have Superman in my collection?
01:16And I just said, shh, quiet.
01:19We don't have to talk about this.
01:21Superman, though, is going to stand at seven inches in height.
01:24In fact, the figure is going to be standing at a little over 17 1⁄2 centimeters tall.
01:28I may have exaggerated that story just a little bit.
01:31The actual words I said to my daughter was, shh, don't tell mom.
01:34Bringing in, though, the other Superman that this mold is somewhat sharing,
01:38here's what the figure looks like with, first, the regular Superman,
01:41which this guy has been released, I think, what, now twice already.
01:44He's also released, was released with the Atomic Skull 2-pack.
01:47This guy on the other side, the Angry Expression Superman, was also, I believe, released in a 2-pack,
01:52maybe with Destroyer.
01:54Similar, though, molds, you can see, like, leg-wise.
01:56Basically, from, like, the waist down is exactly the same.
01:59One thing, though, that the new figure does is it, first of all, gets rid of the plastic capes.
02:03So if you don't like plastic capes, it's been axed altogether.
02:06They have also axed the larger Superman symbol,
02:09which up to this point was molded to his body.
02:11It's not molded, though, anymore, along with his mold returning, also returning his flight stands.
02:15The flight stand consists of two parts,
02:17so if you don't want to have the neck altogether, just leave it off.
02:19You don't have to put it on there.
02:21No one's twisting your arm in order to do that.
02:23If you want to just have it on its own, you can still get use of the DC logo that's featured on the front.
02:27You can also still make full use of the peg that's featured on the front
02:30that can plug into either one of Superman's feet.
02:32With the slots on the back, just don't even look at that.
02:34Don't even look at that.
02:35Just look at this and have your figure displayed that way.
02:38Okay, if you want to look at the back, you can take the adjustable neck.
02:41Now, it's only adjustable here on the top, and this just slides in place.
02:45So these little slots here on the side basically just fits into the canal.
02:48Take a little bit of a push until everything snaps in place.
02:51Now you've got yourself a flight stand.
02:53The flight stand can work two ways.
02:55First of all, this has a hinge so you can move it up and down.
02:57This also does open up.
02:59Now, you can take your Superman figure,
03:01just move his cloth cape out of the way,
03:04and that just plugs around his waist,
03:06providing, of course, I get the plastic cloth cape out of the way.
03:09You can either have him levitating like that,
03:12a little boring, I know,
03:15or what you can also do, too, is you can have Superman pose down like this
03:18and then just bring his flat hands, attach those flat hands, of course,
03:21the ones that are on over there, and just plug those in place.
03:24Now you can have Superman in flight.
03:26You might just end up doing that.
03:28We'll do that a little bit later, though.
03:30Let's just take this and remove it, put it off to the side for at least right now.
03:33The figure does also come included with the trading card.
03:35I really like this trading card.
03:37This is Action Comics Superman.
03:38You can see Clark Kent.
03:39We still don't have a Clark Kent.
03:40You know, you would think by now we could have a Clark Kent.
03:43We have a Hushbody.
03:44I think the Hushbody could probably be either retooled for Commissioner Gordon,
03:47which we also don't really have.
03:48We have Commissioner Gordon that also came packed along with that bat armor piece.
03:52I'm going off on a tangent,
03:54but a Clark Kent certainly would be one I would love to see paired along with Superman.
03:58Clark Kent, though, featured at the back.
04:00Superman featured from the front.
04:02Nice-looking card, though.
04:03On the back, his real name is Kal-El and Clark Kent.
04:07I don't think he goes by Kal-El when he's working at Metropolis.
04:10I mean, that kind of sort of would be a big, dead giveaway.
04:12I mean, obviously, you could just put glasses on the guy, too.
04:14That would be also a big, dead giveaway.
04:15And there's a pretty decent read-up that gives you kind of the nitty-gritty,
04:19the basics of all about Superman.
04:21Now, you can pause and read for yourself.
04:23I've already beaten it to you for that.
04:25I don't know what's tantwied.
04:26I've beaten you to that.
04:28I've already taken the liberty of reading the information that's featured on the back of the card.
04:31You don't have to.
04:32I've already done it for you.
04:33You still want to read it?
04:34Okay, there you go.
04:35Hold up the rest of the line, why don't you?
04:37Okay, let's move it off to the side.
04:39The figure does also come with some swappable hands.
04:41Now, right now, Superman has a closed fist on one side, a gripping hand on the other.
04:45Ideally, I would have liked if the figure could have come with another closed fist.
04:49I mean, just, again, if you want to have him in that stoic pose of having Superman with his arms against his waist.
04:54It kind of looks a little strange that he has a gripping hand then on one side.
04:57And he also doesn't come in with any accessories whatsoever to justify why they even include the gripping hand in the first place.
05:03But let's just say you're somebody who likes to have your Superman in flight.
05:07The figure does come included with two.
05:09Not just one, but two.
05:10Stand there for a second, Superman.
05:12It comes with two flat hands.
05:14The hands themselves, I'm sure we've gotten before.
05:17And it's just a case of obviously just taking a hand that you want to remove and just detach it.
05:21There you go.
05:22Still using pretty long pegs.
05:24And then we'll find a hand that we want to use.
05:26Thumbs still go in whether you're Kryptonian or not.
05:28And that just plugs onto the peg just like that.
05:30And now you've got yourself Superman in a flight pose.
05:34Again, it needs still a flight stand, but the flight stand is just over there.
05:38We'll bring it back for final looks.
05:39And you can just rinse and repeat the same steps.
05:41Just do it over here as well.
05:43So for Superman, there is a fair bit that's been changed to this mold.
05:47And obviously for that I'm going to be bringing back in the original Superman.
05:50I'll tell you the things that I like about this figure.
05:52And I'll tell you the things that I still think the original Action Comics does maybe just a little bit better.
05:56Starting maybe though with the things I like more on this figure is I think I like the blue a little bit better.
06:02Now this blue certainly goes a little more primary.
06:05But I think there's something to be said with the softer blue that they used for this figure.
06:08He also is a lot less shiny.
06:11The new Superman Action Comics with the cloth cape does have a more shinier blue plastic.
06:15I still think I like this blue more.
06:20And I wish the blue could have carried over to this figure.
06:22The trunks, very much similar.
06:24Although the trunks are brighter red on the newer release.
06:27The legs of course carrying over the same coloring of plastic.
06:29It's going to be the same blue as the torso above.
06:31And of course then you've got yourself your legs.
06:33The legs look a little bit more, I want to say like a tomato, ketchup-y red.
06:38As opposed to more like the neutral red that it was before.
06:41I still feel like the colors on this guy are better than the new colors that they used for Superman.
06:47Granted though I know the new Action Comics Superman kind of goes with more primary colors.
06:52But I think the blue on this guy looks a little bit better.
06:55Now one thing also, the big changes made between the two figures is the fact that the plastic cape is now gone completely.
07:01They have given him now a cloth cape.
07:03And the thing I really like, this might be, is it the first time?
07:06One of the first times, it certainly is the first time Superman I think has gotten a cloth cape.
07:09But we also now have an emblem, the yellow Superman emblem on the back.
07:13It is large, I understand that.
07:15Maybe if it was just a little bit smaller it would have worked a little bit better.
07:18But let's just, let's take the positives here at least.
07:21The fact that the figure has a cloth cape.
07:23The positive that he also has the yellow emblem on the back of his cape as well.
07:26Things that up to this point we really have been asking from McFarlane's team.
07:30The fact we finally get that is a really nice touch.
07:33Now with the cloth cape taking over though, the one thing that they have had to do instead,
07:37is they've sculpted an additional neck piece.
07:39When we got the first Action Comics Superman, the neck really didn't have to go all that far.
07:44Or maybe it did and it's just completely covered over by the plastic.
07:47The new Superman though exposes his neck.
07:50It's one thing though I don't really like about the new James Gunn Superman design,
07:53is that they just completely cover over his neck with a high collar.
07:57I always really like Superman with a bare neck like this,
08:00where the cape really just stuck out the sides.
08:02Now it looks what they've done is they've tucked the fabric cape underneath,
08:05basically the plastic appliance for his neck.
08:08It does look sort of a little choppy here on the side.
08:11You can kind of see there's a little gap right there,
08:13but the cape clearly is tucked in place.
08:15But again, small victories here.
08:18One thing also I don't know if I really love,
08:20is that they've given him a metallic Superman emblem.
08:23Now again, what they've done with the original one,
08:25is they've taken the molded emblem off altogether.
08:27And one of the complaints for this figure was that the emblem was way too big.
08:31It literally just went from shoulder to shoulder,
08:33and it took up so much real estate space in the front of his chest.
08:37This one now doesn't even have it molded.
08:39It's just printed in place.
08:41So like there's no additional texturing to this at all.
08:44It's not certainly raised from his body.
08:46I like that Superman emblems are more flat to his body.
08:49I feel like they don't need to look like they're shields.
08:51Superman isn't going to be taking off his emblem and throwing big plastic...
08:54Oh yeah, he did do that.
08:56He did sort of throw his plastic S at General Zod in Superman.
08:59Anyways, I would have rather preferred if they could have used just primary colors.
09:04Not using like the metallic red.
09:06I mean like the yellow looks like it's just a regular yellow.
09:08Why couldn't they have just used maybe the same red as they used for the trunks down below here?
09:12The shiny S just doesn't evoke for me the look to a classic looking Superman.
09:17I would have again changed the coloring of the blue,
09:19and my personal opinion, I probably would have made the emblem less metallic,
09:24and more again like the coloring of his trunks.
09:26Whether they be again a little bit more of that ketchup color red,
09:29still though I think it would have worked better than the metallic that they've used instead.
09:33Now while looking at the two heads,
09:35you may initially think that they are the exact same to one another.
09:39And I was thinking that too.
09:40Although it does look like there's something different about the face sculpts.
09:44I don't know what it is exactly,
09:46but it certainly does look like his face looks a little lower down,
09:50and I'm sure if anything it's only more an optical illusion.
09:53It also seems like his face is maybe just a little bit smaller than the other.
09:57Whether it's just my own vision or not that's throwing this figure's mold off or not,
10:02I still think though this is one of the best Superman molds we've gotten.
10:05The Superman curl is still there,
10:08although now with the gold label collection,
10:10they've now added a blue tint where the original Superman didn't really have that.
10:14I think the atomic skull, now that I think about this,
10:16isn't the atomic skull of Superman.
10:18The atomic skull I think added some additional blue.
10:20This original Action Comics doesn't have that.
10:23I do think that the coloring is a little bit nicer though on this figure than it is on this one.
10:27He is a little more on the paler side,
10:29but again certainly one of the best Superman head sculpts we still have gotten.
10:32Legs seem to be exactly the same.
10:34They've also carried over the same sculpting of his arms.
10:36So if you like the shoulders, the biceps, and the forearms on this figure,
10:39you're going to like it on this figure as well.
10:41So enough changes, I feel like it's not just a case that they slapped on a fabric cape.
10:46Even if they just did that alone, I think that this figure would still be worth the pickup.
10:49But the fact that they've now done away with the emblem,
10:51whether you like the metallic look or not,
10:53there's enough change to this figure that I feel like I didn't spend the money
10:57to get a figure that I already have in my collection,
10:59even though essentially I already have that mold four times.
11:01I think it's now the fourth time I have this figure.
11:03There's enough changes here.
11:04I like the blue, I think, a little bit better on the original release.
11:06I certainly would have gone again with more lighter colors of red
11:09and not gone with the metallic.
11:10But from head to toe, it's a vast improvement,
11:13or enough of an improvement, I think, to justify the pickup.
11:16Now for the figure's articulation, going back to his head sculpt here,
11:19head's going to rotate like with the original one all the way around.
11:22The head can look up about that high, and it can also look down.
11:25You can also move it back and forth as well.
11:27The upper torso, yes, is going to be on a ball joint.
11:29The lower torso, also on a ball joint.
11:32The arms rotate all the way around.
11:34In fact, both arms can pull out a T-pose.
11:36Although I noticed with the shoulders on this side,
11:38it's a little bit tighter.
11:40The figure does have also a swivel in the bicep,
11:42whether you choose that arm or you want to choose this arm.
11:44The arm also, unfortunately, only is going to have that single hinge.
11:48Because they are still using the Action Comics arm,
11:51not only are you going to have those rigid marks
11:53that they put on the original articulated elbows,
11:55but also, again, he's only going to have a single hinge in the elbow.
11:58I know some people really like the double hinges.
12:01I mean, I will say, at least for the hinge on the Superman here,
12:04when you bend the arm, at least it gives you a natural elbow shape.
12:08It doesn't look like it's just a big gap.
12:10The hands themselves, they rotate all the way around,
12:12whether you want to use these hands or not.
12:14Let's just get his...
12:15I want to make sure I've got this facing the right way here.
12:17Bring his arm down like that. Here we go.
12:19Legs split out, you still are using softer trunks.
12:21You aren't, I know. McFarlane is.
12:23Using the softer trunks.
12:25These don't seem as soft, though, as some of the other Superman,
12:27or really, for that matter, any Action Comics figures we've looked at before.
12:30It seems like they maybe have used a denser plastic.
12:33Still has a little bit of give,
12:34but it certainly doesn't feel like it's as squishy.
12:37Stop squeezing Superman's crotch.
12:40The legs do split out that far.
12:41You, of course, can take the legs and move forward.
12:43You can move them back.
12:44A little bit of a swivel there on the top of the thigh.
12:46Double hinge, at least. It gets afforded the knees.
12:48You get no articulation here for Superman's boots,
12:50but at least, though, you have articulation here in the ankles.
12:53They move up and down. They rock back and forth.
12:55And, yes, Superman does have still toe articulation.
12:59One of the other things, too, is that you may notice
13:01that the pegs here for Superman's ankles
13:03aren't quite, though, the same color as the top of the boot
13:05and the boot below it,
13:06but still, again, at least they are using a color very close.
13:10Again, it may stand a little bit more.
13:12They've also kind of somewhat done the similar thing here
13:14for his wrists here.
13:16The wrists are also kind of using a little bit lighter
13:18of a color of plastic compared to the rest of his arms.
13:21But other than that,
13:22other than maybe, again, like the coloring of the blue,
13:24maybe not quite, for me, at least,
13:26being as good as the original Superman,
13:28and I still feel like the emblem probably could have been
13:30a little bit better, lighter colors,
13:32going away, really, with the metallic.
13:34The metallic red, I don't think, works as well
13:36for the figure's mold.
13:37But, again, like bringing back the original Superman,
13:39which I know now is the original Superman,
13:41the one that was packed still with Atomic Skull.
13:43I've got him, I think, in a bag somewhere
13:45sitting inside my toe.
13:46But, you know, again, like to look at the mold,
13:48yes, they are using the same torso, same arms,
13:50same lower torso, same legs.
13:52Still, though, the fact that he now has a fabric cape
13:55complete with an emblem now, finally, on the back of it.
13:58He has also, again, like the removed raised emblem
14:00on the front of his chest,
14:01which I know some people didn't really like.
14:03I didn't mind it as much.
14:05One thing, though, I didn't really like
14:06was the fact that the emblem,
14:08the Superman's shape,
14:09took up so much space on the front of his chest.
14:12So, of course, they have reduced it.
14:13They've made it more the classic shape
14:14that he has in the comics.
14:16Yeah, you know, there is enough changed here
14:18where I feel like, obviously,
14:20they are using the mold again,
14:21but I don't feel like I'm getting
14:22just the exact carbon copy of Superman before.
14:25Even though this one does stuff
14:26that I still think is a little bit better
14:28than the new Action Comics,
14:29I'm still finally happy to have an Action Comics
14:31that finally has a fabric cape.
14:33I think if you're going to go back to the mold,
14:34well, and dust off a figure
14:35and give him slight new modern tweaks,
14:37the Action Comics Superman is the best one going still.
14:40He doesn't feel too outdated.
14:42I mean, obviously, some of the problems
14:43that plagued this original release of Superman
14:45was the fact he looks still like he's missed leg day.
14:48He's still relegated to only single hinges in his elbows,
14:51all his other comrades,
14:52all now have double hinges on his elbows.
14:54But if you're looking at the rest of Superman, though,
14:56it's got still one of the best head sculpts around.
14:59It still has a broad body,
15:00and it still has the classic trunks.
15:03With Superman, though,
15:04I mean, it's not just a case
15:05that they slapped on a fabric cape.
15:07They have tweaked some of the paint,
15:09whether good, whether bad.
15:10The blue works quite well, though, with the cape.
15:13I still would have preferred the softer blue
15:14that they used with the original Action Comics.
15:16And one of the biggest things going
15:18is the fact that they've now removed
15:19the raised emblem on the front of his chest,
15:21which I know was a big thing
15:22for some of the collectors that didn't like it.
15:25The emblem now being part of his body
15:27and not on top of his body
15:28works a little bit better for a classic-looking Superman.
15:31And again, with the head sculpt,
15:32still one of the best heads we've gotten for Superman.
15:34The fabric cape, though, is the icing on the cake.
15:36It's one of the things that makes this figure,
15:38that it also makes one of the biggest reasons
15:40why you'd want to pick up this figure
15:42if you've already had this mold now
15:43three times already in your collection.
15:45Now, maybe not the original Action Comics,
15:47but certainly the one that was
15:48kind of slightly more tweaked,
15:50that came packed along with Atomic Skull.
15:52For a while, he's been my definitive Superman,
15:55still standing in the forefront of my shelf.
15:57This guy, I feel, is going to be replacing him,
16:00and that one with Atomic Skull
16:01is going to go back in the bag
16:02with all the other Action Comics Superman.
16:04Again, I did find this one at Walmart,
16:06but even if I didn't find this one at Walmart,
16:08I probably still would have sourced one out online,
16:10because, again, it's one of my best favorite Superman molds,
16:13and they've tweaked it enough
16:14so it feels like he's still modern-looking.
16:16He's still modern with the rest of the figures we're getting now.
16:18What do you guys think of this Action Comics Superman?
16:20Enough tweaks made to it that's still worth picking up,
16:23or it's still a mold that you just don't like?
16:25Let me know what you feel of this figure
16:26down below in the comments section.
16:28Also, if you guys did enjoy this video,
16:29you can do it a solid and throw it a like.
16:31You guys want to stick around for more, so?
16:33I hope so.
16:34Hit that subscribe, yeah, turn on the bell, okay?
16:36And certainly, most importantly,
16:37is that you're coming back.
16:38As always, thanks for watching.
16:39See you guys next time.
