00:00Enhancing your IQ can cause a split in your psyche. Here's a look at the McFarland
00:05Toys DC Multiverse the JLA Blue Energy Superman.
00:30Sent to Earth from the dying planet of Krypton as baby Kal-El was found by
00:36farmers Martha and Jonathan Kent and raises their son Clark. As Clark grew up
00:40the radiation from the Earth's yellow sun gave him extraordinary powers which
00:43he kept hidden. Now fully grown he uses his powers to protect his adopted world
00:47as Superman. The man of steel is virtually invulnerable and has powers of
00:51super strength, super speed and flight. He also has enhanced senses including heat
00:56vision, x-ray vision, super hearing and super breath. Before we get a closer look
01:00at Blue Raspberry Superman we're gonna see what the tape measure is gonna tell
01:03us when it comes to figures height. This is though one of two Superman the other
01:07one being the Red Superman which unfortunately goes for crazy stupid
01:10money online. The Platinum Edition version of him is still gonna come
01:13included with the exact same torso piece for Plastic Man. So you're not really
01:17benefiting at least from the standpoint of building Plastic Man but obviously if
01:20you're gonna be getting a Blue Superman the likelihood is you're also gonna want
01:23to be tracking down the Red Superman. I likely would be falling in that same
01:27category. Though the tape measure is still gonna tell us that Blue Energy
01:30Superman is gonna stand at 7 inches in height or the figure is gonna be about
01:3417 and a half centimeters tall. As for comparing him with Supes gonna bring in
01:39of course the one that most people generally have in their collection the
01:41Action Comics Superman. There's though a height difference definitely between the
01:45two. You can now see also really where they've started to perfect I feel the
01:48form for their figures. Superman before from the Action Comics I think was a
01:52little too big big and bulky and looks like he really did skip leg day. The new
01:55proportions though of the newer figures definitely work a little bit better. I
01:58feel like this is also using the exact same body mold for Captain Atom. I'm not
02:03gonna bring in Captain Atom though. What I am gonna do is what I've been doing
02:05lately here. If I happen to have still the original Mattel DC Universe figures
02:09I'm gonna bring those in as well for comparisons. So of course here's what the
02:13Blue Energy Superman looks like though with Mattel's counterpart. And while I
02:16don't have yet the original McFarlane or don't have the McFarlane multiverse
02:19version of the Red Superman I still don't have the red version from Mattel.
02:22And that's what the figure looks like him as well. When we jump over to Suits
02:26accessories you'll notice that he does borrow a few things from the Scarlet
02:29Speedster. I'm waving my finger over here at some speed force effects. Just
02:33before we look at that and the severed stump of Plastic Man the figure comes
02:36also included with the trading card and display stand. I think we'll start things
02:39first talking about his trading card because it's the one thing that kind of
02:42bothers me about this figure. Not that he didn't come included with the trading
02:45card. I'm always glad that they did but it just seems so very generic that they
02:48chose of all things long locked mullet Superman from the return line. In fact I
02:53think this is the exact same card that got packed along with that Superman that
02:56came included with Krypto. Of the back also as well it's a very generic read.
02:59Basically if you were to read this from the top and you go to the very
03:02bottom you basically just get in a nutshell what is Superman's origin story.
03:05It isn't so much though the origin story for Blue Superman. Blue Superman
03:10though in fact actually was trying to use a mind enhancing machine powered by
03:13Kryptonite to increase his intelligence. And the radiation of that end up causing
03:17the split between the Supermans creating then a Blue Superman and a Red Superman.
03:21It doesn't though mention anywhere that on the back of the card. Like I said it's
03:25a very generic read up literally from the moment he leaves the blowing up
03:28Krypton all the way down to basically where he's raised and he's growing up
03:31to becoming Superman. It has really again nothing to do with energy Superman. I
03:34think they could have chose maybe a better card. That's all I'm gonna say
03:38about it. What I am gonna though say is the fact that the character does come
03:41include of course with his display stand. The display stand does still have the DC
03:44logo. It still has the peg. I mean there's nothing really new differently
03:47done here about the display. But it does plug into either one of Supes boots. The
03:51figure also comes included with of course the stump or the torso piece.
03:55Needing to start our journey when it comes to building Plastic Man. Yes we
03:58still need a head. Yes we still need arms. And of course we need the lower legs. But
04:02of course through the journey there's gonna be some variations to some of
04:05those parts. I'm definitely looking forward to building Plastic Man. One of
04:08my guilty pleasure characters I like from the DC comics. I always was a big
04:12fan of Plastic Man. I thought he was always more entertaining than Mr. Fantastic.
04:15We're gonna move that off to the side though and again we're gonna continue
04:18building that through the next series of what three reviews considering this the
04:22first one that we're looking at. But going back though to Flash's
04:24accessories. These are all things that we've gotten before again with Flash. Of
04:28course before normally these would either have been done in yellow or would
04:31have been done in blue. This time around they're kind of more done in a clear
04:34plastic with a slight drop of blue to it. It's got a little bit of a bluish tint
04:39and it does these basically just clip onto his legs. He also has ones that go
04:43then clip on around his arms and these basically like really soft
04:47plastic. What you'll do though is that you'll get leg pieces and you kind of
04:51can tell too by that fact these are leg pieces by just how open they are. Hey
04:55look I'm looking through glasses. Stop that. The figure also comes included like
05:00I said a slightly smaller version of those. So what you'll do is I mean it
05:03doesn't have to be the case. You can put them anywhere. If you want to have
05:06these up here you could but they're just gonna be staying a little bit looser on
05:09the figure's body. But if you want to have them up there you can have them up
05:11there. I'm not telling you that you have to put them down below. Basically though
05:14these will just clip around his legs just like that. I mean again right away
05:18it doesn't really look so much like something that would belong to Superman.
05:21It looks like right away something that would either belong to Wally West or
05:24Barry Allen. Clip the other one again around his legs. You can certainly skip
05:29through this part. No actually you know what don't skip through this part. We're
05:32not gonna be very long. Then we're gonna of course take the arms. These are
05:35also gonna slide around his forearms like that. I've already done this
05:39obviously at the beginning of this review when we were looking at the
05:41figure in the first looks of the figure before we jumped over to of course the
05:44main review. Once we get to through the meat and potatoes I'm sure once we get
05:47back to the final looks and on to the turntable again I'm sure these
05:51lightning effects will come back into play. Again they don't look so much
05:54something that would belong to Superman. They look a lot more like something that
05:56would belong to Flash. I feel like if anything they probably could have given
05:59him like electricity. Something that would just like a like roots just spiral
06:03around his legs and something similar to his arms as well. I mean obviously they
06:07were just simply using some cost-saving measures of just producing the exact same
06:10mold of something that they already had in their belongings. But again I just
06:13feel like it doesn't fit so much necessarily with Superman. If it's just
06:16as much with Superman as the trading card that comes in play with the
06:18character. Let's remove these right now. We'll just put them off to the side.
06:22Getting though a closer look at Blue Superman. Now I did say that there was a
06:26red version of Superman. It's basically packed along still with Plastic Man's
06:29torso but it's actually the platinum edition for a version of that figure. I
06:32just happened to look online just before I started to hit record. More out of
06:36curiosity because obviously I'm gonna be definitely interested to get a red
06:38version down the road. He's sitting well into $100 probably like a hundred to a
06:42hundred and thirty dollars depending where you're finding him online. He again
06:45is going some stupid stupid money. Head sculpt though for the Blue Energy
06:49Superman does look quite good. Now I I've always had really a kind of a guilty
06:53pledge when it comes to this particular design of Superman. In fact I would
06:56probably rank it pretty high up there. Classic Superman then probably like New
07:0052 and then probably like Blue Energy Superman. Like all those kind of designs
07:03of Superman's very much a different departure from what we're normally
07:06seeing from the Man of Steel. He's very much less steel really. He's basically
07:10comprised of energy. He's got the big emblem there on the front which is very
07:14much different than what we're used to seeing with Superman. More angular. I mean
07:17the S doesn't even complete its journey to the other side here. It's very
07:21different but what's neat about it though is because he doesn't have a cape
07:24though they still put though the emblem on the back of his body as well. That's
07:27in the comics. They've also done that here as well for the figure. They haven't
07:30skimped at all when it comes to the paint, the sculpting, or the details. Again I
07:34really like the head sculpt. Now when we looked at the original one and we're
07:37talking like years and years ago. I'm gonna bring in the original Mattel
07:40version so you guys can see. It's definitely a different approach when it
07:43comes to the colors. I don't think that the colors for this one worked all that
07:46well. By the way this one also did have an energy effect that basically just
07:49clipped onto his torso. There was a little slot in the back that accommodated the
07:53cape and what they did give you was a little energy force effect. Does this
07:57actually come off? I think it comes off. Basically it would plug in place. Maybe
07:59they did actually glue that in there. Anyways this just attached on the back
08:02of his body but I do think like the blues were a little too dark. I like that
08:06they went with much more of an icier blue for this release of him. The face
08:09sculpt I think definitely is an improvement. The hair was okay on the
08:12original release but I think again like McFarlane has made leaps and bounds when
08:16it comes to better looking sculpts and better looking paints. Again while the
08:20likelihood is very high that this body's been used obviously from before and I
08:23keep thinking it's Captain Atom just by the look of the proportions and stuff.
08:27You guys can certainly let me know down below in the comments but I do think
08:29this mold works really well for this particular look for Superman. Sculpting
08:33is good again on the face. You can see how well they've painted the eyebrows.
08:36Even the areas around his like the outlining of his eyes work really quite
08:40well too and he's got very very thin looking lips again painted nicely in
08:44blue. I don't see really any paint problems at all. I'm just
08:48spinning the figure around. There are a few areas where you could probably have
08:51said well for the the white. White is always one thing that unless they put
08:54another coat of it there's a few other areas like you probably could see a
08:57little bit of plastic bleed of the blue just underneath here but for the most
09:01part yeah the white looks pretty good on this. It's a little rougher here right
09:04right around here because basically what it looks like is that they've painted
09:07this on first and then they basically just brushed a long streak of white on
09:12the side. So there's sections where it almost looks to like the side here had a
09:15second coat of paint and this one only had just a single coat of paint so they
09:19probably could have done a little bit better there but all in all though it's
09:21a nice looking body for Superman. I think it's generally well painted. Now for the
09:26articulation on this figure if you're pretty much familiar with the DC
09:29multiverse figures and nothing really is different here at all for Superman I
09:32also like the way that they've done the cowl where you can still see the
09:35sculpting of the ear underneath. Anyways for the head head's gonna rotate all the
09:38way around it's on a ball joint the head looks down about that far. Missed it? You
09:43didn't really miss it. It doesn't go that far. It looks up certainly a lot higher
09:46so if you did have yourself a flight stand even though this figure doesn't
09:48come included one you can have Superman though in flight. The head rocks back and
09:52forth and again you can rotate it all the way around. For his arms they rotate
09:56all the way around as well. He still has those socket joints which unfortunately
09:59is a little unruly here. It kind of looks a little out of place having this on
10:04Superman but if not for that really you would see a gap where the shoulders
10:07essentially would be attached on to the torso. So they put these cup joints here
10:11that are not even really joints they're basically just hiding the joint that's
10:14underneath it. They sit a little loose on the figure and again when you are
10:17moving the figure's arms you can kind of really see like this part of the
10:20plastic just sort of flops around on the inside cavity. The arms though again
10:23rotate all the way around you can bring the arms out at 90 degrees no problems
10:27there. The figure does have a swivel in his bicep a double hinge on the elbow
10:31nice good to see that and the hands do rotate all the way around. The figure
10:34doesn't have any other hands I mean obviously we already kind of looked at
10:37the at the beginning of this review all the things that came packed along with
10:39the figure. Extra hands weren't though one of them. Upper torso is gonna be on a
10:43ball joint. The lower abdomen area is also gonna be on a ball joint and again
10:48he does have these softer lower trunks but not soft to the point where I feel
10:51like the figure does have like that unruly figure diaper. I think the body is
10:56generally quite tapered off. This mold works really well again not only for
10:59Superman but I mean if they were to get more mileage out of this mold I don't think
11:02it'd be a bad thing at all. Very muscular in the legs. The legs do split up. They're
11:06arm ratcheted joints after all. Take the legs move forward take the legs move
11:10them back take the legs and rotate them at the top. The figure does also have a
11:14double hinge on the knee and he has the articulation of course where it counts
11:17in the ankles you can also rock it back and forth. The figure has toe
11:20articulation and he also does have holes on the bottoms of his feet so again if
11:25you want to use the display stand you can certainly do that as well. Things I
11:29like about the figure are the color. Things I like about the figure is the
11:32sculpt. Things I'm not as crazy about the figure are just basically the add-on
11:35pieces. Sure it works well to clip these on to Superman so it looks like he's
11:39generating some electricity but at the end of the day I mean to look at these
11:42I mean you know right away like it looks like he's moving this way. The speed
11:45force effects are going this way. It definitely does belong I feel with more
11:48flash. If they did want to use something a little bit different I mean just to
11:52have like electricity wrapping around his arms I think would work a little bit
11:55better than going with these speed force effects even if they're colored a little
11:58bit more appropriately to Superman. I just I don't feel like they belong at
12:01all with the character. I mean they're nice to add on there but the whole time
12:04I'm looking at it I just feel like he's boring over something that belongs to
12:08the Scarlet Speedster. As a side note though I do hope though that the
12:11availability becomes a little easier to track one down of the red Superman
12:15because again like if you are one that loves this suit in the comics everybody
12:18then knows if you're gonna have a blue Superman then you're gonna have to have
12:21a red Superman as well. Moving our attention now to the turntable and the
12:25blue energy Superman. Just went back though and I looked on eBay for what the
12:29prices would be going for the JLA red Superman and they start at around $80.
12:33I'm seeing some listings for $81, $88, there's one for $85 then it gets really
12:38crazy and stupid well $134.85, $136.21 anybody looking at
12:45similar listings would say that buddy they're not that high. We have to
12:49keep in mind too I'm a Canadian collector so I basically have to take
12:51the US prices and I have to add another third the price so they're a little
12:55lesser for US listings but then they convert over to Canadian. As we though
12:59move back our attention away from eBay because I don't want to be looking at
13:02that that's just way too depressing. What isn't as depressing maybe is the
13:05fact of taking the energy effects that come included with Superman and doubling
13:09things up. They don't have to necessarily attach it on the legs there's nothing
13:12that really says that you're locked in where you have to get this figure you
13:15have to take the energy effects and put them where you think they have to go.
13:19Instead add them on to his arms so the slightly smaller ones I put near the
13:24wrists the wider ones that looked like they went around the legs instead clip
13:28them around his bicep and his shoulders and it kind of gives a pretty decent
13:31effect where it doesn't look like they're deliberately intended to be
13:34speed force effects. I still wish that they would have been done a little bit
13:37different but I guess it's not a bad thing at all the fact that Supes does
13:40come included with them. He does also come included with a pretty generic card.
13:43I thought that's a deal-breaker I mean the cards are only ultimately going to
13:47be going back into my sleeves and to be all honest me once that's in the sleeve
13:50a year from now I'm not gonna be looking at that and thinking yeah that's the
13:53card that came with blue energy Superman. I'm just gonna think it's just a
13:56generic Superman card which it is but it's not a deal-breaker at all. I mean
13:59even if you're one that throws away your cards anyways it's not like you're
14:02buying the figure specifically for the trading card. I certainly don't buy the
14:05figures for the trading cards alone. I buy them because the figures look good.
14:08I gotta say like red Superman looks good. The problem with it though is again like
14:12if you follow the comics and you're really familiar with the way that
14:15Superman was during this period of time you're probably then gonna be interested
14:19to get your hands on the red Superman. Red Superman is the platinum. Red
14:22Superman's the one that's a little harder to come by. Red Superman is the
14:26one that's going for crazier stupider money. What do you guys think of blue
14:30Superman? Let me know down below in the comment section. Do you think that this
14:32was an interesting time for Superman to have this particular look or weren't you
14:36a fan of energy Superman at all? Again I usually call them the blue raspberry and
14:40cherry Superman if you're familiar with ICEs. It's a hot day today. I could
14:44really go with an ICE right about now. If you guys did enjoy this video oh thank
14:49you. Make sure you hit that with a like. If you guys want to stick around for more
14:52because we are gonna be continuing our journey as we build a plastic man. We're
14:56gonna be looking at Aquaman. We're gonna be looking at Jon Stewart. We're also
14:58gonna be looking at a Batman that basically is I feel a repack Batman
15:02which wasn't necessarily belonging in that line in the first place. You can
15:05hear more of my thoughts if you continue on my journey by again hitting that
15:08subscribe, by turning on the bell, by coming back. As always guys thanks for
15:13watching. See you guys next time.
