00:00Welcome to Mediantv, we are heading towards the tropical heat and the marine air that
00:13enter through the windows of a colonial-style house surrounded by palm trees on the first
00:18floor of this plastic art workshop.
00:21A group of artists chose to settle in the coastal city of the Grand Bassam in Côte
00:26d'Ivoire, far from the tumult of Abidjan.
00:28They are painters, photographers, designers or sculptors, and they have chosen to settle
00:33far from the urban disorder and depopulation of Abidjan in the Grand Bassam.
00:38Located an hour from the country's economic capital, this historic city, listed as a
00:43UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts more and more local creatives in search of a more
00:49serene and affordable way of life.
00:50While the artisan village of the Grand Bassam used to be on the verge of disappearance,
00:56a new generation of contemporary artists re-appropriated this emblematic cultural centre and gave it
01:02a new life.
01:03I invite you to listen to Ibrahim Ketouré, painter and founder of the Akan Mandigo Gallery.
01:10For me, there is a difference between the Grand Bassam and Abidjan.
01:15Abidjan is the city, people go there to look for money, it is the agglomeration, the
01:20agglomeration.
01:21Abidjan is the city, people go there to look for money, it is the agglomeration, the agglomeration.

01:45Abidjan is the city, people go there to look for money, it is the agglomeration.
01:47When we do that, generally we are not seen.
01:50It is the one who comes to finance, who hits all the big part.
01:55If there is money, if there are things to be paid, it is them, as they are the big structures,
02:01it is them who take more than even the artist in question.
02:04So we decided to self-finance so as not to have ...
02:09Grand Bassin is inspiring, the community estimates unanimously,
02:13but its cultural appeal is not without the historical district of the city,
02:16where the vegetation dresses the colonial houses in ruins
02:19and makes its way through old windows,
02:22is registered in the World Heritage of UNESCO since 2012.
02:25First capital of the Ivory Coast during the French colonization,
02:29Grand Bassin has also been the first cultural and artistic city of the country
02:33by the wedding of people it has welcomed.
02:36We listen to these artists.
02:38Georges Yao is a painter and founder of the House of Plastic Artists of Grand Bassin
02:43and Kofi Maturin-Tano is a painter at the House of Plastic Artists of Grand Bassin.
02:50The House of Artists is an association that brings together 21 artists.
02:55This association allows us to present the work of each artist,
03:02to have more visibility,
03:05opportunities to sell, to exhibit.
03:10When I was a student at the School of Fine Arts,
03:13I was the head of the delegation, so we came to Bassin.
03:17I understood that it was a touristic city that was really animated,
03:23there were artists, artisans everywhere.
03:26I said to myself, here must be the environment in which I could evolve.
03:31And that's how I had this crush.
03:33So as soon as I finished the fine arts training,
03:36I asked to come and settle here.
03:39The day after the country's independence in 1960,
03:42Grand Bassin became a banner station
03:45before becoming one of the country's first tourist destinations,
03:48both internationally and nationally, with sales opportunities.
03:53In a building open to the play of sunlight,
03:56the House of Plastic Artists thus welcomes several hundred visitors a month
04:00and in Bassin, a majority of artists self-finance themselves,
04:04sometimes by choice, preferring independence
04:07in search of an ever-higher quota.
04:10Let's listen to Paul Acoussi.
04:12He is a sculptor and founder of the Paul Arte gallery.
04:15It's our job, so we're on the side, we're artists from time to time.
04:19If I'm here, I move to another corner.
04:22If I'm not in my studio, I try to go visit a friend
04:27who also makes art like that, to try to find inspiration
04:31through the same sound he's making.
04:33Maybe it also inspires me to see.
04:35And music, to finish,
04:37to tell you about the Jordanian-Palestinian singer Zayn,
04:41new pop star with her powerful melodies.
04:44The Jordanian-Palestinian singer is determined
04:47to make culture and the Arabic language shine
04:50all over the world.
04:52Settled in London for several years,
04:54she was forced to give up her projects to return to Yemen
04:58following the closure of borders in 2020.
05:01Locked up between four walls,
05:03Zayn reconnects with music.
05:05A few years later, here she is at the top of the charts,
05:08pop R&B in Europe and the USA,
05:10and invited to the famous Color Shows,
05:13a Berlin platform that has become a must-see
05:16for emerging artists.
05:18Let's listen to her.
