00:00Welcome to Mediane TV. After 25 years of closure, the chapel of Sorbonne, whose dome symbolizes the prestigious university of the Latin Quarter in Paris and which houses the tomb of Cardinal Richelieu, will be restored to be able to open to the public.
00:25The works, estimated at several million euros, will be financed by the World Monument Fund, an international NGO for the protection of historical sites in peril.
00:35While 11,000 students enter the prestigious university every day, the chapel of Sorbonne has been closed for 25 years. Its dome may be an emblem, something is missing in the architectural and historical coherence of the oldest faculty in Paris.
00:50Fortunately, the curse of the chapel Saint-Ursul-dite-de-la-Sorbonne will soon come to an end. Heavily affected by the 1999 storm, it was closed and repaired until 2008 at the level of its roof and facades to put an end to infiltrations and limit breakage.
01:08But the interior, which has undergone the passage of time, remains to be restored with a net under the dome and humidity spots clearly visible on the ceiling. In the end, the university hopes to revive the chapel with cultural programming.
01:21I invite you to listen to Mathilde Auger, the Executive Director of the World Monument Fund in France.
01:30It's a chapel, as you can see, which is absolutely exceptional. It's a, as I often say, it's really a page in the history of art that we can read.
01:39We are in the 17th century, we have very big names, both in architecture, the king's architecture, Jacques Lemercier, and then of course Philippe de Champagne.
01:49The relationship with the Cardinal de Richelieu, who is very present in the Sorbonne. And then when you come in here, you say to yourself, but what a shame that these works are closed to the general public.
02:02There are very few places that are closed to the public, but this one was particularly, it was really heartbreaking.
02:09It was for us to say to ourselves how we leave in the shadows, in any case in the ignorance of the general public, Parisians and Parisians, tourists, of course, this majesty, this beauty.
02:23And the beautiful has meaning, the beautiful makes sense and the beautiful makes you happy. I think that if we can give a little happiness to the people who will come here, I think we will also win a bet.
02:34So we must first restore, so we must count at least a good year of restoration, and then know how to reopen, and then not just reopen to reopen.
02:45What are we doing there? Is it just a place of visit where we come to admire works? Will it be a place of living culture?
02:51That is to say, we will be able to do concerts, conferences. All this, we will think about it together, and I believe that this is the first step of the reopening.
03:00On January 15, the World Monuments Foundation announced that it was ready to raise funds for the restoration of its interior.
03:09In partnership with the Chancellery of the University and the City of Paris, a cultural project should even be imagined, likely to revive the place.
03:17A new chapter will therefore open for the chapel, rejoices the Chancellery of the University.
03:22The Saint-Ursule-de-la-Sorbonne chapel, closed for almost 25 years, will therefore benefit from this support in order to raise funds and start its restoration in order to make it accessible to the general public again.
03:34Built at the request of Cardinal de Richelieu by Jacques Lemercier between 1634 and 1648, classified as a historical monument since 1887,
03:44it was selected by a jury after being proposed by the Chancellery of the Universities of Paris and the City.
03:50There are real masterpieces, such as the monumental paintings of the medallions of the dome of Philippe de Champagne,
03:57but also the tomb of Cardinal de Richelieu, sculpted by François Girardon in 1694.
04:04First element already restored, as well as a crypt that pays homage to the high school students and teachers martyrs of the Resistance.
04:13I suggest you listen to Karen Taïeb, she is an adjoint of the Paris City Hall in charge of the heritage.
04:19It is one of the most iconic places, the most emblematic of the Latin Quarter.
04:23It is the logo of the Sorbonne itself, of the universities, and in fact no one has set foot there.
04:29And that's still terrible for the heritage.
04:32So we wanted to work on this project of reopening.
04:36Reopening for what? To give this heritage back to Parisians, students, tourists around the world.
04:42Also to be able to tell this story.
04:44This is something that is really important to us at the WMF, to tell stories.
04:48The story of the sites, the story of what surrounds us.
04:51The great needs of restoration concern both the sets.
04:55Today we can't really see them, they are underlined.
04:59And also we are talking about reopening.
05:02Today, technically, concretely, it is not really possible to open the door that leads to the chapel of the Sorbonne,
05:08since it is under a tribune of the organ that is not stable,
05:12which needs to be stabilized in order to be able to do things.
05:15So in fact there are several needs for restoration inside,
05:18but nevertheless the monument itself is relatively simple.
05:22And music to finish.
05:24And the new clip is necessarily a tube by the singer Gims,
05:28who loves to make us dance to very particular sounds.
05:31The rhythm is always very catchy.
05:33The singer once again evokes themes related to love and a woman qualified as a magician.
05:39It must be said that there is an almost fascinating magical side to this clip.
05:43We listen of course to an excerpt.
