Cloud with patchy rain and drizzle and hill snow affecting southwest England. A few showers along the south coast and drifting in across North Sea coasts. Dry and fine elsewhere with sunshine but a few fog patches which may persist in places. Feeling cold everywhere with temperatures struggling to rise above freezing, and staying below freezing where any fog lingers .- This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 10/01/2025. 00:00Welcome to your latest weather update from the Met Office.
00:03It is slowly turning milder, but for most of us,
00:06it'll still be a cold weekend.
00:08And it's certainly cold out there this afternoon.
00:11The view from space shows some speckles in the North Sea.
00:14There's showers just drifting and clipping the East Coast.
00:17Thicker cloud, though, down to the Southwest.
00:19That is a weather front, and that
00:21is slowly trying to introduce milder air.
00:23But the dominant feature is this large area
00:26of high pressure that's building in across the country.
00:29Keeping things dry, keeping things mostly sunny by day,
00:32but also keeping things pretty chilly.
00:34There's that weather front, though.
00:35It's brought more cloud to the Southwest,
00:37a very different day for southwest England, south world.
00:39A little bit of rain and drizzle here and there.
00:41Maybe a few flakes of snow over the hills as well.
00:44One or two showers along the South Coast.
00:46As I mentioned, those showers just trying to feed in
00:49from the North Sea, clipping easternmost counties
00:51of England, Northeast Scotland.
00:53But many areas dry, fine, and sunny.
00:56But it is cold.
00:57Temperatures struggling to get much of a freezing,
01:00certainly where any fog lingers.
01:01And there are a few fog patches around.
01:03Two or three, the top temperature for most places.
01:06But it is a bit milder in the Southwest.
01:07Later on, could get to eight or nine in the far Southwest.
01:10That blanket of cloud will keep the temperatures up
01:13a little bit overnight across the Southwest.
01:15And the cloud will thicken as the weather front edges
01:17in across Northern Ireland, bringing
01:19a little bit of rain in here.
01:21Again, maybe the odd flake of snow over the hills.
01:24For many areas, though, it's dry.
01:25And the biggest concern tonight perhaps
01:27will be the fog, as well as the tumbling temperatures.
01:30Some dense patches of fog are likely to form
01:32through the night across parts of England and Wales
01:35in particular.
01:36Temperatures, again, are going to be dropping sharply.
01:40Frost forming rapidly this evening.
01:42And by first thing Saturday morning, minus 3, minus 4.
01:45That's in urban areas.
01:46Rural parts could get down to minus 16, minus 17
01:49across where there's snow lying on the ground
01:51through Northern England and Scotland.
01:53Again, though, further west with that cloud,
01:55temperature actually holding up.
01:56So a milder night across Northern Ireland
01:59and West Wales.
02:00But there will be some rain here as well.
02:02So a dull, damp start to Saturday.
02:03That rain, light and patchy, will creep its way
02:06into Western fringes of Scotland,
02:09maybe at times into North Wales, a few spots of rain as well.
02:12But perhaps a drier day in the Southwest of England,
02:15although still pretty cloudy here.
02:17Fog is going to be stubborn, slow to clear.
02:19The Welsh Marches, Northwest England, the Midlands,
02:22East Anglia, patchy in nature, but quite dense
02:25and very stubborn.
02:27And where the fog sticks, temperatures will really struggle.
02:29But for a good part of Eastern England, Eastern Scotland,
02:32it's another dry, bright day.
02:33And actually, it may all cheer up in Northern Ireland.
02:35It'll certainly get a bit milder here as well,
02:37six, seven degrees, maybe a little higher in the Southwest.
02:40Again, many areas though, temperatures struggling,
02:43three or four degrees.
02:43And where that fog does stick,
02:45we probably won't get above freezing.
02:48That fog may thicken up a little bit
02:49during Saturday evening,
02:51but we are going to start to see a bit more of a change
02:53as we head through the second half of the weekend.
02:56The cloud continuing to edge in,
02:57not much in the way of rain on it,
02:59but of course, anything falling out of the sky
03:01could freeze up and make things a little icy
03:03during the weekend.
03:04But behind me, the cloud is starting to thicken once more.
03:08And that is a little bit more of a lively weather front,
03:11starting to push in towards the Northwest during Sunday.
03:14High pressure though, still in control,
03:17still bringing a lot of dry and cold weather
03:19for England and Wales.
03:20Perhaps not quite as sunny on Sunday over the Midlands,
03:23but parts of Eastern England, again,
03:25could have some of that patchy and dense fog.
03:28But the cloud breaking up a little bit for Wales,
03:30Southwest England,
03:30so probably a brighter day here with some sunshine.
03:32Those weather fronts will bring cloud and rain
03:34into the Northwest and a strengthening wind.
03:36But look at where the wind is coming from.
03:38It's coming from the South.
03:39So it will be slowly introducing milder air.
03:42So seven, eight, nine degrees across Northern Britain.
03:45Temperature a little higher on Sunday further South,
03:47but still on the cold side at four or five Celsius.
03:50Even here though, it should turn a bit milder
03:52as we head into next week.
03:54Do keep up to date with the forecast.
