00:00The Department of Health continues to encourage the public to follow respiratory etiquette
00:07such as wearing a face mask using a face mask, staying at home if you have a face mask,
00:12a handkerchief, or a handkerchief, and washing your hands frequently using soap and water
00:17as the colder Northeast monsoon continues.
00:22The DOH also emphasized that the monsoon season may result in increased conditions
00:29such as allergy or respiratory infections.
00:33The DOH Influenza-like Illness Surveillance System
00:38has detected 179,227 obvious cases of the disease on December 31, 2024,
00:45which is still 17% lower than the 216,786 cases reported last year.
00:54This decline may lead to better management and management in finding health care
01:01and better health sector preparation.
01:05The ILI is illustrated by red, yellow, and blue.
01:10This is usually due to respiratory viruses such as rhinovirus, enterovirus, influenza A,
01:18respiratory syncytial virus, and adenovirus, which are the top five causes of ILI in the Philippines.
01:27Outside the Philippines, the increase in common acute respiratory infections
01:32including respiratory syncytial virus and human metanumovirus
01:36was reported by the World Health Organization in its Disease Outbreak News on January 7, 2025.
01:45It is expected to increase during the winter in China and other countries in the Northern Hemisphere.
01:53The authorities of China also clarified to the WHO that their health care system
01:59is not affected and there is no emergency declaration or response.
02:04Human metanumovirus or HMPV is not a new disease.
02:09It was discovered in 2001 by Dutch researchers in samples of nasopharyngeal aspirate from children
02:18who have respiratory infections caused by unknown pathogens.
02:23In the Philippines, HMPV is considered a part of Panel 2 for specimens negative for testing in Panel 1
02:31including SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus, and influenza.
02:37HMPV is a part of our influenza-like illness and monitoring of severe acute respiratory illnesses.
02:45HMPV is the sixth positive agent of ILI in the Philippines for 2024.
02:52From January 1 to December 21, 2024, there were only 284 positive samples due to HMPV.
03:02From December 1 to December 21, 2024, there were only 10 positive samples due to HMPV.
03:10HMPV is sometimes seen to have no different clustering or pattern throughout the year.
03:17Most people infected with HMPV will only have symptoms such as cough,
03:25fever, runny nose, and cough.
03:27The rare cases may result in bronchitis or pneumonia,
03:33especially in the elderly and those with immunocompromised individuals.
03:38Those with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or emphysema,
03:44are at a higher risk of developing serious symptoms.
03:49The DOH warns the general public, especially the immunocompromised and elderly,
03:56to be careful by washing their hands frequently, avoiding crowded places if possible,
04:03and eating and drinking water properly.
04:07The DOH urges those at high risk or with complicated symptoms
04:13to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
