DepEd, Special Olympics Pilipinas sign MOU on inclusive sports
The Department of Education and Special Olympics Pilipinas sign a memorandum of understanding that will allow educators to teach inclusive sports and create training programs and competitions for students with learning disabilities. The partnership also makes the Philippines the first ever country in the Asia Pacific Region to be included in Special Olympics Global Coalition for Inclusion. Education Chief Sonny Angara believes that the partnership will allow students to learn the importance of inclusive sports and harnessing them to prevent issues such as bullying. Special Olympics Pilipinas Chairman and National President and former Olympian Gillian 'Akiko' Thomson-Guevara added that while the work ahead was huge, they were hopeful that the partnership with DepEd would be fruitful.

00:20Of course, we know that...
00:23there's...
00:24of course, hanggang ngayon medyo problem parin
00:27How are we going to resolve the issue of inclusion with this partnership right now?
00:34Well, culture yan eh. You have to change the culture.
00:52dahil they don't know better sa totoo lang eh.
00:54Di sila naturuan ng tama.
00:55So, ito, eh, yun ang isang pakay nung MOA natin na turuan sila ng tama at baguin yung kultura.
01:04Include po ba dito sa part issue, especially anti-bullying factors?
01:11Yes, definitely, kasama yan.
01:12Kasi, minsan yung bullying, ano yan eh, produkto ng aggression.
01:17Diba, yung mga hormones ng mga bata, yung problema nila, nilalabas nila.
01:21At the same time, sports can also be the venue for these things.
01:24At maganda sa sports, regulated siya, may referee tayo, may rules siya, diba?
01:29Unlike pag linabas lang yan sa bullying eh, anything goes eh, diba?
01:32Of course, how important is the partnership between, especially with Filipinas and them,
01:37especially with inclusivity and we have heard reports about bullying, uh, bullying in the news right now.
01:43How important is this project?
01:44It's a huge, it's a huge deal for us, especially as you heard, you know, this is the first time, uh, for us in the regional Asia-Pacific region.
01:55So it's, you know, it's, it's a, it's, it's something I believe that we can be very proud of.
02:00And it's just, the programs that we will be able to implement are really, they have great impact.
02:10Uh, unified sports is when you have a typical person playing sports side by side with a person with special needs.
02:19And, you know, I've experienced it and it's, it's how, it, it addresses so many other needs because it, it makes us real, see the other person.
02:33And see there, there's nothing to be afraid of, irregardless of how different they are.
02:39And you learn, we learn how to, I love this, this is a sign from, uh, a message that we have at Special Olympics that when we play side by side, we can learn side by, we can learn together and then eventually we can live side by side.
02:54And that's what we hope to achieve.
02:56Sports is the entry because it's the most natural thing for any kid play, which is not always, um, the opportunity for kids with special needs.
03:05It's, it's not always as accessible for the typical kid than the typical kids.
03:10So that's our entry point.
03:12But beyond that, we have a leadership program also that we will be running in the schools.
03:17So it gives the students typical and neurodivergent opportunities to rise, develop skills and, and, and be leaders in their own way, in their own community.
03:35So, thank you.
04:05You
